No doubt about it, the DeLorean became world-famous by the "Back to the Future" films. I am not a sports car guy, but I am a huge fan of the movies. It is fascinating that a car that ceased production in 1982 still lives on.

I have been aware of your company for quite a while now, but this is the first time I have seen this film, which is brilliant. I live in Belfast about 1 mile from the original factory site and can tell you that John Delorean was a much loved and respected man in this part of the world. I first saw the car as young child at the Belfast Motorshowin the early 1980s and was blown away by it. It's so great to see that you have embraced all that was great about DeLorean and are keeping this very special car alive, so thank you from a fan in Belfast.

That's like before the 60's where there were almost zero regulations with automobiles. As time progressed new emission laws started to popup, and a lot of engines in this time frame were heavily restricted to meet those standards. Took a bit to create engines that made decent performance at these standards.

DMC Houston's website goes in to further detail. It looks like it was regulation rather than lack of parts or interest that stopped new production. The EPA requires newly manufactured cars to meet the emissions standards in effect when the car was built, regardless of the age of the design. This means that a new DeLorean must meet 21st century emissions standards. The junky engine the DeLorean originally came with and DMC has on hand does not meet current regulations. As of 2017 DMC was trying to source new engines that would pass muster.

Not much of an argument there. Besides, apart from Back to the Future, the main thing DeLoreans were known for were faulty door hinges and anemic performance.
My father almost bought a DeLorean at one point. He decided against it after a test drive.
The DMC12 is a below-average car, but it's not terrible. It just needs work... a lot of work.

If I had one of these my next move would definitely be a retro fit. Redesign the doors, engine braking system and interior...On the outside it would look like the original but underneath the veneer it would be very modern - the lights would be LED.
In my opinion a retro fit like this is true to film that inspired so many people's nostalgia for the car. You may not be able to add a 'Mr Fusion' but you could certainly had a hydrogen or electric engine today.

I found jokes written in caulk by the Irish factory workers on the sheetmetal underneath the plastic vent just behind the driver's door on my 1981 DeLorean. Mostly comments from them about "Detroit Spinners" and other Anti-American car comments. There's also writing from the factory workers inside the roof of the doors hidden by the headliners. I left them there. You can't see them with the trim in place. It's their little secret that I found in 1996 when I bought the car. I still own it today.

The engine is called the PRV V6.
Which stands for 'Peugeot / Renault / Volvo'.
It was a joint project between all three car companies, and was first used by all three brands in various models from '75 or '76 onward.
The PRV V6 has also been used in lots of other cars, mainly sports coupes, (inlcuding the DeLorean, of course) by other much smaller brands over
    the decades.
Sometimes with a turbo, sometimes even with a twin turbo, (which Renault did on its own Renault 25 Biturbo and then the
later Renault Safrane Biturbo in the '90s).
While one of the more memorable sports coupes/brands that's used it was the Alpine brand rear-engined fibreglass-bodied coupes, (sometimes referred to as the 'Renault Alpine'. Arguably the closest French equivalent to a Lotus but with the engine layout of a Porsche 911) which finally got the engine as standard from about '84 through to the mid '90s, with the option of turbo.
*[Side-note: after about a 20 year absence, Alpine has been recently revived as a brand - but has changed to a mid-engined layout, no more 'plus 2' rear seats, more compact size, and a smaller but boosted engine. Aimed to compete with the Porsche Cayman, Alfa Romeo 4C, Lotus Elise, etc).
While due to Peugeot buying out Citroen in around '76, Citroen also got the PRV V6, eventually, in the top spec models of it's upper size cars, (starting
with the XM from '89, then the Xantia, C5, C6, etc).
The DeLorean really needed a turbo, (or supercharger) as either standard or option right from the start.
Due in no small part to its heavy stainless steel body, (but at least that keeps the body panels rust-free!!!).
It's crazy they don't now offer the option of an upgraded DeLorean, (as suggested above) with the performance it should have to go with the looks,
rather than just selling it 'as it was' when new way back in the early '80s.

Uneven firing, noisey, 170 cubic inches of leaks, bad cams, blown head gaskets and bad timing chains held together by tiny corroded bolts. . Maybe ok for a collector, or a trailer queen, not something you would want to take on Holiday.

Would be nice if they (GMC? If they still own the rights to the design) redesigned the engine and other parts to make them good cars manufactured at a reasonable price whilst still maintaining the original aesthetic. Basically, fix the internal problems and leave the external features alone. Then they could sell them for a reasonable price in the mass market.

They were supposed to release this in 2017 but the national highway traffic safety committee block them. Early 2019 they supposed to come out with a revised version regarding the new laws the new one should have 300 to 400 horsepower and cost about $100,000

they still have enough doors alone for 500 more cars before theyd have to make new ones seing as they make 30 odd cars a year at a gues thats over 15 years from now before theyd even have to build new doors, at a gues if they did keep building new cars and keep fixing old ones they would propobly use the stock in a little over 10 years. and like p12 said they have all the BP they need to build new ones.

I adore this car and it's history but 130 horsepower V6 is embarrassing. Modern 4 cylinders have more HP than that. Regardless I would love to own one.

    • @mightress
      @mightress 7 років тому +25

TheAaronmcmahon11 lose american emission restriction crap: 150 hp. Use european injection complete (volvo/renault) 185 hp. Add renault cams: 225 hp. Buy alpineV6 heads: 300 hp. All off the shelf and not expensive parts. These blocks are solid as a rock and if you tune further the stock crank will hold easily with 500hp. Engine is good, american laws made it suck big time.
