@@deelibiot4014 Arca's music is not for the masses. For an ear that doesn't mind chaotic songs and knows a lot of music similar to this... actually, the album is pretty accesible. But I get it, it's too much for you.
I can digest this album in the same way that I can even tolerate (and enjoy) a band like Nails with their heavy aggressive sound and rawness.
Mutant is still her masterpiece. That album is an incredible journey.

The visuals really don't fit the music. Arca is the definition of style over substance. Few cool songs here and there but it's more miss than hit.
Look at this: Arca talked about the kicks being a form of rebellion against oppression.
Kick 1 show us who she is and what she brings
Kick 2 is the take over, where the mutants organize to change the paradigms
Kick 3 is pure fire, burn to the ground to renaissance
Kick 4 is the accomodation and installation of this new future, alienated languages with songs that empower

The lyrics paint an image of child birth too which my poetry professor pointed out to me. While it’s obviously sexual the lines “how could she flip it all upside down” or “she wears her crown” (crowning in pregnancy) or “how could it fit inside a body so petite”. Makes sense that the KiCk series concludes with the birth. Can’t believe he didn’t like that track.

Is it just me or did Joya kinda feel like a tribute to Sophie? With it's synths and ethereal atmosphere, reminds me of some of the cuts off of Oil of Every Pearls. It actually made me cry first listen. So emotional.

Fantastic commentary on the series - thank you. Personally, knowing where Arca is in her transition, the kinda reverse entropy of the whole project (moving towards minimalism as layers of overwhelming texture are gradually stripped away) really synthesises what it has meant for me to start my own medical transition, finding serenity from within the mutation. This made iiiii (5) the most impactful instalment for me by virtue of its culminant nature. But as the whole thing is an undulating constellation this doesn't necessarily make it the 'best' in my mind either - the work isn't so linear. the whole thing is a shattered and reconstituted snapshot of a living being, from the primal kick of a foetus to the final Lazarus reflex of death.
These albums are absolutely incredible, The Kick series just might be one of the greatest achievements in experimental music this decade. Arca is a true visionary.

This album was so freaking good. Arca continues to wow me, I wish them the best!!! They are just as inspirational and close to my heart as SOPHIE was, and I'm so glad they continue to push the boundaries.

You gave them much higher scores than I was expecting lol. Pleasantly surprised though. Me personally, I wouldn’t rate any of the kicks anything lower than a 9. I’ve been a huge Arca fan for a bit so it’s really hard for her to ever make something I don’t love. 3 is my favorite as well, but 4 is my second favorite because of its beauty and softness. It engages me in the same way a Tirzah album would if that makes sense. Colourgrade is another one of my favorites this year and I had it on repeat for a good while. It’s music you don’t have to think too hard about, and I love that type of stuff sometimes. Songs like Witch and Altar are ones I’ve been coming back to often.

Arca's artwork is always a goddamn trip, and adds so much aesthetic to the sound.
As someone who woke up one morning and saw two arca albums, checked their Instagram and see that two more albums were dropping, it felt nearly impossible to be able to deep dive into all of the albums. I'm glad I have a bit of a guideline to what will appeal to me on each album and what I can expect. I'll eventually have to listen to all of them back to back and see what speaks to me most out of all four projects
r/arcamusic has some great analysis of these albums if ur looking for more in-depth but i think this review does a decent job. i love all four of these new albums from arca so much i’ve been listening nonstop

Listening through these albums reminded me a lot of going through Brockhampton's Saturation trilogy the first time. Not musically or anything, just that there's some amazing musical ideas scattered all over the place on these, as with those, and the simple fact that so much work and so many unique sounds and ideas were created in such a short time is incredible. Huge props to Arca for showing love for the craft.
My favorite thing about kick iiiii is that she sampled her own at the time unreleased song estrogen and made the iconic mequetrefe

It was not well received. Beyond the film being bad and boring, it was also called insensitive to the autistic community, for reasons that become obvious if you watch the trailer. Sia defended the movie against its many critics, saying some… horrifying things on Twitter in the process (ie telling an autistic actor “maybe you’re just a bad actor” in response to criticism of casting a neurotypical actress in the role)
Love the reaction and reviews. Kick series and Arca herself will be called a legend and will be an inspiration for the next generations of musicians.
iiiii is probably my favorite of the bunch, at least so far. It grabbed me instantly, but we'll see when I get more time with the others. It's a lot in a very short amount of time. Arca is the shit.

am i the only one that thinks Kick ii was better than Kick iii? iii was more consistent but ii had a lot more tracks that i liked. i really think Rakata-Tiro-Luna Llena was the serve of the century. actually, i wish Arca would've kept up that raggaeton energy all through kick ii

I agree, Prada, Rakata, Tiro and Luna Llena are some of my favorite arca tracks ever. Although from Kick 3 I did enjoy Joya and Incendio quite a bit
love this review anthony but i do not get at all how you think kick ii had no focus. even if you don't understand the lyrics, which obviously tell you about the theme for the album, the style is pretty cohesive? the intro is a bit off, but it foreshadows the second half of the album that is more sinister and experimental, with the first half being reggaeton bangers, and each track transitions into the other pretty incredibly for how stark the difference between the two halves are.

I struggle with this music, I know it’s a messy thing to put out there but I have intrusive thoughts visions and feeling about corrective surgery, I’m scared frankly. My mind is full of scalpel blades and sore wounds. Think I’m getting a bit old.

I have no trouble listening to 100 gecs but Arca’s music pushes insanity to such a degree that i’m left feeling like a clueless boomer. And this is coming from someone who a) is younger than her and b) is a fellow spanish speaking south american
I'm amazed I had to scroll this far down to find a single comment from someone who also doesn't get it. I tried listening to Kick 3 on a few occasions and had to turn it off every time. The songs all just sound the same to me, just some tight syncopated beats with no melody and some rapping that I can't understand because I don't speak much Spanish.
@@drfunkinstein1 Yeah i had the same issues with the album (aside from the not understanding spanish part.) However, i did come to love the album closer “Joya” since that song has pretty clear and enjoyable melodies as well as some beautiful singing. I recommend checking that one out. Lyrically, that track is basically a love song that Arca wrote for their boyfriend, who they consider to be a really special “gem”

I loved all of them. This is easily one of my favourite artists right now. I would only hope to aspire to the level of raw creativity that they had while doing this record in my own personal work. I see the criticisms and respectully disagree.
