Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎 UPDATE: I just released a new DRUM LESSON PACK! -> bit.ly/CobusLessons. 5 lessons, 90 minutes, for 27 bucks. It will make you better at tuning drums, mixing drums, I'll show you my practice routine, my worst habits as a self-taught drummer, and teach you one of my favourite linear licks. Thanks for being here!
These cymbals look great and sound pretty damm cool too. Dark reso bell, tons of low freq wash and super "pingy". Fast swing or slow wash riding... awesome. Well done Team Sabian.
Love the sound of the 24-inch HH Pandora and 22-inch HH Pandora stack that you made! If I had more room on my kit to accommodate that setup, I definitely would!
They are in a couple musical stores near me.. & I have hit them.. I recommend the same. Wish I had a set up made entirely of this cymbal line. Also really appreciate this cat's proper grammar. Kudos.
"Sabian just ripped off Meinl!" Sure, let's pretend for a moment that Sabian wasn't rolling out hand hammered, unlathed and unfinished cymbals 20 years ago, before any other company.....ok back to reality. Meinls Ghost ride, unlathed unfinished bell with a fully lathed bow is a ripoff of Sabians raw bell dry rides, their trash crash is a copy of the ozone crash. Are they an awesome cymbal company? Absolutely, they make top tier pies that can stand against anything, but don't think for a second that Sabian is stealing their ideas when it's the other way around.
Im not saying they don't have the right to it but I just look at it this way. Tons of people will probably buy these because Sabian, I get it. They see the market and they know whats selling. But you're doing a disservice to the drum community By going at it like that. Idk, just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Especially calling them Big and Ugly. Like, Really? Respect the cymbals Sabian. These extra dry, dark, pure, and sand Meinl Byzance models are some of the greatest works of art in the game. Of course, Just my opinion.
ehucke But Sabian didn't steal anything, they've been doing these kinds of rides long before Meinl ever started the Extra Dry/Sand Series. HH Leopard Ride, Jack Dejohnette Signature, HH Duo Ride, Will Calhoun Signature etc. They were the first company to make production cymbals this way. This series is unique in the sense that this is a group of cymbals with varying production production methods, but rolled out across 4 different cymbal lines (AA, HH, XS20, HHX) instead of just one like the Byzance series is.
SoulControllerAve - "Sabian...hand hammered, unlathed and unfinished cymbals 20 years ago, before any other company." Assuming you're just speaking of modern companies, and not including Zildjian/K Zildjian Istanbul, I'd put Istanbul (pre-split) ahead of Sabian. Anyway I generally agree with your comment, just wanted to clarify that Sabian wasn't the first to do this.
I can see many comments comparing the new Big and Ugly line to Meinl Byzance series such as the Extra Dry, or Vintage Pure, etc. I would agree that there are similarities, but they are certainly not "ripoffs". I don't think there should be a debate about which brand or series is better, as it all comes down to taste in the end. I may be a Meinl guy at heart but I personally love the sound of the Big and Ugly series and think it is great that Sabian is experimenting with these kinds of characteristics in cymbals! They add so much personality, making each individual cymbal unique in its own right. Thanks for the video, Cobus!
not to mention Sabian made this kind of cymbal 30 years ago so if anyone is ripping off anyone else it's Meinl ripping off Sabian. Pretty sure that back when Sabian made the awesome first generation unlathed DeJonettes Meinl was still known as a cheap budget crap cymbal that nobody wanted.
I like these complete cymbal reviews. That means all the additional info too. I would like more attention time per cymbal and info about the use mics added, but those are just details. Very useful for us cymbal shoppers, keep it up👍
I love what you did with those pandoras! You should try using it as a real high-hat once. I've heard someone do that on another channel... Sounded amazing, but they used two 16(?) inch crashes. loved your review btw
cobus, dude, i know you're probably not even going to see this but, you just have no freaking clue of how big a influence you are in some lives. you just don't know, trust me. I also just want to thank you for what you, unknowingly or not, contributed to my life and my personal experience. i just hope i yet get a chance to talk to you, to able to let you have a glimpse of the revolutions you make in some people's minds. "cheer up emo kid", you're the man. :)
Thanks for sharing. Nice playing and nice cymbals. My only criticism - and it's mostly based on personal preference - is that it seems like you really have to lay into them to get any volume. I understand these are "drier" cymbals so this makes sense...
I don't get people complaining that another brand's already done this. Isn't it that kind of competition that provokes innovation and new products in the market at all? A brand is a brand, but it's ultimately about the drums, and in that about the music.
Lmfao you obviously need to reread what you posted! These are big, fat, beefy, and raw with no lathing. Keropes are meant to have a more "vintage" sound and are hand crafted and lathed as to sound so (meaning thin sounding).
I think the original commenter meant the fact that they named the cymbals just "cymbal" instead of "crash cymbal"/"ride cymbal" etc was copying the concept of Keropes
Cornelius Low Yes thank you, that is what I meant. They copied the qualitie that there is no specific type of cymbal from the Kerope line, and somewhat copied the appearance of the Meinl Byzance line
Ummm having no title for the cymbal isn't a Kerope thing, that's just how cymbals originally were.... On top of the fact this series is about diverse cymbals, which is why they have no title. The reason that old Turkish cymbals didn't was because there were no names at the time. They were just all cymbals.
You are correct Matt, but I think there aren't many companies who thought of using the old naming system again other than the old old Zildjian. Interesting topic though.
not to be too stuffy or get away from the drumming aspect, but you asked about english. technically, you do not want to end a sentence with a preposition (at, on, of, about, etc.) - "in" in this instance. you corrected yourself well - "wherein i used these cymbals". you could also move the preposition to the front "in which i used these cymbals". but back to drumming - nicely done. i don't know how long you've been playing, but you're obviously a good student of the drums. nice playing, nice mixing. i tried some of these in the store, and they seemed a little bit choked for my tastes, but definitely a unique line and will add to your "vocabulary" - as you so eloquently put it.
Incredibly nice cymbals. Not not sure about dynamic range, though. They’re very quiet, sorta quiet, or quiet, which I enjoy but their range is pretty limited.
Personally, I think these almost sound like two of the exact same cymbal are stacked on each other. It's like they WANT to be the extra dry series from meinl, but they're just heavy and cheap sounding
No, I meant they are making cymbals that you can do alot more with them, like the Omni cymbals. Instead of needing more and more cymbals, they are making them in a way that one cymbal can do the role pf several, for their versatality
***** Yeah, I also agree, I am getting the Monarch, and I really like it... it's vintage, but sounds like it got a little injection of modern sound. But it isn't anywhere near of the sound of a HHX Omni specially, but the AAX is madness as well
Cobusss can you ppleaseee make a drum cover of i dont care by apocalyptica and adam gontier, please there is no good decent cover on youtube, and youre the best
People are beating up on sabian for "copying" but if you think about it its just like cars. Youve got the ford f150 and you have the toyota tundra similar overall but just made by a different brand. I dont think its that bad. I think they should be rename big and sexy cause those are some good looking cymbals
Meinl is not the only cymbal company to feature unlathed/unhammered or any combination of cymbals in their lineup. Cymbal sound trends change like a pendulum, like any other cultural thing happening in the world today. IMO Sabian is filling a gap in their lineup with these cymbals. They have tons of options and sound profiles but the "dark, dry" sound profile was one that until now was clearly lacking with Sabian. I am more inclined to believe this as the reason for B&U as opposed to some "competition" for dark, dry cymbals on the market. So no, they sound nothing like Meinls. They sound like Sabians.
I mean, I'm sure these are good depending on the player, but I always felt that that the idea of cymbals was to have a cutting sort of feel. They sound good, but I definitely would not play them all in one set up, maybe just one, they don't seem to have a huge range of dynamics. What people forget is that dynamics doesn't mean play quiet, but to have a good range from quiet to loud, and these don't seem to go very loud. I can imagine them being good for a small bassa nova, samba, or jazz gig, but for the majority of players, especially in rock drumming, they seem very limited to what they can do.
when you're a salesman and you gotta sale something, you better be sure you believe in your product. because you're about to make people believe it's not just good it's nearly perfect. this review of cymbals, in my opinion, clearly does not present to people a brilliant brand new series of versatile cymbals. it's just an unconvincing effort to make people buy something they don't need THEY ARE AMAZING THEY"RE INCREDIBLE (screaming internally) OH MA GAWD BUY THEM QUICK PLEASE OR THEY WILL KILL MY FAMILY
Scott Bainbridge I can understand that, but the manner in which they were built is a technique that's been around since before menial was even a company. You have to remember this is a Turkish company, as is menial. But the zildjians have been doing this a lot longer than menial. Correct me if I'm wrong haha.
Guys. No matter how we look at it, every company and every business will always be expanding ideas... AT THE SAME TIME, copy them. And in the long run, many of those companies will create an innovation of that copied idea. Man kind has always been this way since the beginning of time. Stop being so crabby by saying, "Ohh, "company a" just a ripped off from "company b"!!! The truth of the matter is...you yourselves might be doing the same. Whether its in our classes, schools, businesses, jobs, groups, churches, etc. Look on the brighter side.... These cymbals sound great. And there are others that sound just as great. Stay positive, you ninnies! LOLOL
Hi Cobus so dose that mean?, if i have a Green Which Drum set?, & A Pearl Drum set,? with pro tone skin's, on my Pearl drum set, will they still sound good, & please let me know Cobus which is Better?, & with Remo Drum skins, on my Green Which drum set?, dose that mean, i don't have the real thing, because i'm happy with my drum set, the way it is, if it wasn't for drum's, i don't think i would have much of life, because Drum's are Super Awesome????????????, Thank's Againg Cobus.
Great review. I love how genuine you always come across as, never like you wanna sell us stuff or just be famous. Never lose that :) Btw, just for the sake of mild interest, "that I used them in" is ending the sentence with a preposition (in, of, on etc.), which is actually technically correct, but often considered poor grammatical form and "in which I used them" would be advised by more pretentious grammar nerds. lmfao, thanks for proving to me that you're still in middle school. making comments about vaginas is so mature. go back to playing your 4/4 shitty Korn music.
Dude, seriously hipster shit describes it perfectly. I personally can't stand these unfinished, ultra dry, shit-stain-looking cymbals. How anyone can call them musical is beyond me.
Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎

I thought he'd switch to Meinl for a second haha!
Love the sound of the 24-inch HH Pandora and 22-inch HH Pandora stack that you made! If I had more room on my kit to accommodate that setup, I definitely would!
Matt Thompson worlds most expensive stack
They are in a couple musical stores near me.. & I have hit them.. I recommend the same. Wish I had a set up made entirely of this cymbal line. Also really appreciate this cat's proper grammar. Kudos.

ehucke you're not making any sense
yeah every cymbal company should have a more trashy variety but i have to agree that meinl perfected it first
SoulControllerAve - "Sabian...hand hammered, unlathed and unfinished cymbals 20 years ago, before any other company." Finally! I was waiting for your videos
I love what you did with those pandoras! You should try using it as a real high-hat once. I've heard someone do that on another channel... Sounded amazing, but they used two 16(?) inch crashes. loved your review btw
That sound of the Apollo is sooo nice 👌👍
Keep up the great work, you're an inspiration!
You should do a review/tour sorta thing for your main kit, with both cymbals and drums.
Great video! Thanks for making it
Watching drumming in 60 fps is an experience.
cobus, dude, i know you're probably not even going to see this but, you just have no freaking clue of how big a influence you are in some lives. you just don't know, trust me. What are those hihats? They sound amazing!!!
They're Sabian 14" Artisan Hi-Hats.
Thanks for sharing. Nice playing and nice cymbals. My only criticism - and it's mostly based on personal preference - is that it seems like you really have to lay into them to get any volume. I understand these are "drier" cymbals so this makes sense...

Wait, someone gives COBUS lessons?
"The Cobus Method" is his dvd series i believe
competition, that's what they are, but good for drummers since its does for a broader sound choice alongside Zildjian, Meinl, etc. good review anyway!
I kno this is a pretty old video but where is the love for the Monarch? That's my favorite cymbal in my opinion
:O cobus getting lessons. whos the teacher someone from DW? cause if so thats pretty incredible
Sabain just took Zildjian's K Kerope series and Meinl's Byzance series and made these cymbals. Still pretty cool though
Lmfao you obviously need to reread what you posted! These are big, fat, beefy, and raw with no lathing. Keropes are meant to have a more "vintage" sound and are hand crafted and lathed as to sound so (meaning thin sounding).

Something drier than meinls ... My search is over. I can now die a happy man
the Phoenix rides are my favourite. Especially if you can find the really light ones, like 2200 grams or less.
Cobus you are amazing, one of the best
not to be too stuffy or get away from the drumming aspect, but you asked about english. technically, you do not want to end a sentence with a preposition (at, on, of, about, etc.) - "in" in this instance. you corrected yourself well - "wherein i used these cymbals". you could also move the preposition to the front "in which i used these cymbals". but back to drumming - nicely done. i don't know how long you've been playing, but you're obviously a good student of the drums. nice playing, nice mixing. i tried some of these in the store, and they seemed a little bit choked for my tastes, but definitely a unique line and will add to your "vocabulary" - as you so eloquently put it.
At least he can speak 2 languages. We as Afrikaans speakers struggle with it.
English
Incredibly nice cymbals. Not not sure about dynamic range, though. They’re very quiet, sorta quiet, or quiet, which I enjoy but their range is pretty limited.
Sick grooves at 2:38, man.
Meinl does it better, and calls their cymbals beautiful instead of ugly. Boom.
Personally, I think these almost sound like two of the exact same cymbal are stacked on each other. It's like they WANT to be the extra dry series from meinl, but they're just heavy and cheap sounding
I don't see any ugly cymbals around...! Does a thing like that even exist?
Sabian seems that now everytime they make a cymbal, they do it with the concept of doing more with less... I like that :)
No, I meant they are making cymbals that you can do alot more with them, like the Omni cymbals. Instead of needing more and more cymbals, they are making them in a way that one cymbal can do the role pf several, for their versatality

i hope i spelt "pandora" right ;)
Cobusss can you ppleaseee make a drum cover of i dont care by apocalyptica and adam gontier, please there is no good decent cover on youtube, and youre the best
New Promark sticks? What model are they? What happened with the signatures?
People are beating up on sabian for "copying" but if you think about it its just like cars. Youve got the ford f150 and you have the toyota tundra similar overall but just made by a different brand. I dont think its that bad. I think they should be rename big and sexy cause those are some good looking cymbals
wow, Cobus was really ahead, today's trend loves fat- thicc toned cymbals
i'm glad you're willing to joke about their looks! they sound awesome, but the look of them has me scratching my head! haha
This cymbals are so dry that makes me go thirsty
don't worry, buddy. your english is noticeably better than most native english speakers.
Meinl is not the only cymbal company to feature unlathed/unhammered or any combination of cymbals in their lineup. Cymbal sound trends change like a pendulum, like any other cultural thing happening in the world today. IMO Sabian is filling a gap in their lineup with these cymbals. So no, they sound nothing like Meinls. They sound like Sabians.
Lol id have too much fun with these. Big and ugly cymbals are so unique
I agree...much like how I'd have too much fun playin' with you. No offense, just an honest observation hon.
I mean, I'm sure these are good depending on the player, but I always felt that that the idea of cymbals was to have a cutting sort of feel. Yea i agree the one that sounded awesome too me was that ride. definitely gunna look into it
So basically you can crash on all of them, yet still ride on them..sick bro
Can't wait to play sabian
OMG that 60 fps hurts my face.
What kind of hats are you playing in this vid?
keep that apollo or king for your main ride, that apollo is great for ride.
Awesome, Cobus!
did they let you keep the cymbal?
when you're a salesman and you gotta sale something, you better be sure you believe in your product. because you're about to make people believe it's not just good it's nearly perfect.
this review of cymbals, in my opinion, clearly does not present to people a brilliant brand new series of versatile cymbals. it's just an unconvincing effort to make people buy something they don't need
THEY ARE AMAZING THEY"RE INCREDIBLE
(screaming internally) OH MA GAWD BUY THEM QUICK PLEASE OR THEY WILL KILL MY FAMILY
Oh wow. Thank you Cobus.
Hated pretty much every one of those I heard. Kit sounded great though!
Those are really big, indeed.
you just started lessons a few years ago...
Yeah I threw butter in there, I know its kinda weird but just go with.
so funny that they really named them "ugly"... XD
Sorry Cobus but they are basically Meinls
How so?
Because they're basically copies of the meinl byzance extra dry series
camposmarco27 ohhhh. so that's where I've seen those before.
mtxrules
Apart from sizes they look and sound identical to meinl byzance extra dry series.
Scott Bainbridge I can understand that, but the manner in which they were built is a technique that's been around since before menial was even a company. You have to remember this is a Turkish company, as is menial. But the zildjians have been doing this a lot longer than menial. Correct me if I'm wrong haha.
That is one expensive stack/pair of hats haha!
Did Sabian pay him for this?
yay~ more videos!
I see what they were going for. Still, I'd take Meinl or Hammerax before these.
Nice CamBra
The cymbals look strange not ugly
Guys. No matter how we look at it, every company and every business will always be expanding ideas... AT THE SAME TIME, copy them. And in the long run, many of those companies will create an innovation of that copied idea.

These cymbals sound great. And there are others that sound just as great. Stay positive, you ninnies! LOLOL
drumming in 60 fps.....holy crap
cool
***** rad
***** please do covers and series again, idk I miss it I guess :) Great vid as always tho :D
+Cobus Potgieter ( ͡°╭͜ʖ╮͡° )
I wish i get one of this
What mark of battery is it?
these cymbals don't cater to his sound and its really obvious he doesn't really like them.
I hope you can play in the dark cuz those are too ugly to bang with the lights on. Gee! Lolz
they may be big and ugly but DAMN do they sound good!
They look awesome, from what I heard they are pretty impressive!
Daym thats some big ass cymbals!!
Hey cobus, this comment is abit out of the blue but how did you work your way up to being so popular in drumming on youtube?
you can literally watch all of his career path in his youtube channel
Sound a lot like the Instanbul Turk series, just lighter.
Cobus better be glad he's a good drummer. Cause he's no sells man lol
This is an excellent sound. I just dont see These symbols fitting Cobus style of drumming.
Cobus, don't let down the 2nd commenters too! :)
Wow they sound awesome
not ugly they sound superb!
What's the dynamic range? between bleh and meh?
Great review. I love how genuine you always come across as, never like you wanna sell us stuff or just be famous. Never lose that :)
Btw, just for the sake of mild interest, "that I used them in" is ending the sentence with a preposition (in, of, on etc.), which is actually technically correct, but often considered poor grammatical form and "in which I used them" would be advised by more pretentious grammar nerds. Only elitist (and even more pretentious) douchebags who know less on the subject than they'll want you to think will tell you it's categorically wrong.
Who gives a single actual shit
@@GlazeonthewickeR you, apparently.
What hats are those?
But that ride sounds awesome
Getting a sabian artist to review sabian cymbals is a bit biased no?
What is that hi-hat stand it's wiggeling all over the place
I see the South African is forming a twang in the accent.....taking a page out of Charleze Therons book my ou maat...;-)
he just sound like South African boy.. XD
Meinl everywhere.
hmm. the cymbals looks like meinl, but always love sabian...
and meinl's look like sabian Jack dejonettes from the 80's. what's your point?
their face...
Great video from a guy who can play cymbals which are much more ugly than big 🤣🤣 cannot imagin these ones in a band with loud guitars...
When I first started drumming, my first cymbals were cheap DX brand. Even those sounded better than any of this overpriced hipster shit.
djent is totally a genre Sand up the vag again? Poor baby.
Less cool than playing 4/4 all day is using the word fag in a holier than thou tone. And yes this is a holier than thou tone.
lmfao, thanks for proving to me that you're still in middle school. making comments about vaginas is so mature. go back to playing your 4/4 shitty Korn music.
Dude, seriously hipster shit describes it perfectly. I personally can't stand these unfinished, ultra dry, shit-stain-looking cymbals. How anyone can call them musical is beyond me.
Nathan Scott because some people enjoy how they sound and look. your definition of "musical" does not rule supreme over anyone else's.
Cobus make a cover of uptown funk - mark ronson ft. bruno mars
i have those dws
that is relic
Cobus. Are you South African? Cause Potgieter is not a common USA name haha
Yes, he is.
