Feeling that you give tips, tricks, and so-called secrets away, for the simple reason that you want to share, and that you want others to succeed in Bonsai, and not to be discouraged. That is what good people that know what they are doing, want to share with others, from the heart of what they believe in, and do. Thank-you, Mr. Peter Chan! for honouring us with your expertise and wisdom. We very much appreciate you and what you do and share with us.
What a statement "I may be a fool but why not". you have got to love it.
Ah, that's the luxury of having another 300 plants out the back to get it right on!
Peter is on a roll.
They don’t call him the chopper for nothing
Your decision of air layering the tree is the best decision in my opinion. Thanks for the education you provide for me. God bless. Hello from California
Be bold and bite the bullet!! You are no one’s fool - you are amazing. Great video! Many thanks!
I love that Peter has zero hesitation. I need to channel that in my own life.
You made the best choice, scary but bold. Thank you for the vid.
Bonsai is not a short term hobby, it takes a wise and patient mind to look into the future and see the potential. As an impulsive person, I took up Bonsai to retrain this habit, and it sure has helped me a lot.
This year was hard for all, you helped make it nicer, thank you and have a happy new year
Its new year's already where I am
A very fine decision from a very difficult Bonsai. I think it was the correct choice in the end. If it were to remain to grow the inverse taper would take many decades to overcome. Thank you for opening our eyes Peter, as always.
This is so exciting.
Please make sure to give us an update on this project. 💜
I think you made the correct choice there Peter "But what do I know" :-) No it looks great and it will be a fantastic Bonsai.
all the best
Richard.
YES another wonderful video Peter. Bless you for the amazing content 👏🏼
just got some benichidori seeds, seedlings(year or 2 old) and cuttings from a friends tree in their yard. its almost as large as our native eastern US maple at the base. its not even that old of a tree (29 or 30 years old). ive been wanting one for a while. hopefully my seeds, seedlings and cuttings will be as beautiful and vigorous as the parent tree one day. thank you peter for sharing all your trade ticks and tips with us all
Do please share what the air layered maple is doing now 5mths on.
All the air layering created a great trunk
My most respected teacher, and inspiration in the field of bonsai,
Sir, first of all I bow before you.
It is only you who inspired me to
make an effort to put my thoughts
on Bonsai in HINDI for the people
of my country. Sir, Very very rare
persons are here in this world, who,
in this age even, are imparting
the knowledge, the trade secrets
so openly, so vividly . Sir, undoubtedly, you are the real promoter, a real living legend in public sense in our Bonsai
World.
Sincerely yours
Thakur M. S.
,
Thakur ji - I think you have met me in Bhopal some years ago?
Thank you for your kind words.
Sir, once you holified my terrace along with Mr.Dham in Rohini. Asked me the name of a bush which I could not due
anxiety. Your calling S.L.Gupta, yourself
n me as three monkeys🐒🐵🙈 of
Mahatma Gandhi with a bursting
laughter, is still echoing n will be
in my drawing room. Your presence
is the greatest Certificate for me.
Love you so much Peter Chan
I think you made a great call. And we got to see a super thick air layer process.
I hope next year will be a great improvement for you, your family and team.
I agree.... the decision to air layer at that spot will create a lovely bonsai. I hope we will see the results in a future video. But I did get a little confused with the advice to not scrape the cambium. As in a past video, about a year ago, Peter advises to scrape the cambium . Bonsai Shortcut-Air Layering. Please clarify. Does it make a difference on the size of the tree ?
I was looking for this question as well. When I heard Peter say this I had to pause and go the comments. I have always scraped the cambium with my air layers and have had moderate success for being a rookie.
I've seen a lot of gardener swap sphagnum moss with coconut coir.
Sphagnum is almost non-renewable...it's very slowly generated if I'm correct.
Coco coir comes from coconuts and is very renewable and available.
You are no fool Peter, you are a Master Teacher. Thank You!
Amazing sir the way you teach is extraordinary ❤️
Another enjoyable video. Look forward to seeing the air layered tree in the spring.
I hope there will be an update :) all the best to new year to you all
Its now an addiction for me.
I know rite?😂😂😂
So beautiful bonsai❤️❤️❤️
You are no fool to us Peter.
Just fearless!
" Because you have the options...life becomes more interesting..." xx Mr Chan......
I like your final decision. Just makes sense. Can't wait to see its progress.
You are not a fool, you are an excellent teacher. Very good tutorial.
Am I going to have to start counting daily video’s instead of
Just the Sunday weekly uploads?
In all honestly though I am loving this Maple series, thanks so much.
This is just the Christmas/New Year holiday treat for our viewers from us at Herons. Thank Bodhi too for all the work editing them !
Well thanks again, ps there is a company in Wales who grow sustainable sphagnum moss if you do struggle with imports from New Zealand.
@@paullill5604 - Can you kindly email our office and we would like to explore this further. sales@herons.co.uk
That was a satisfying decision! So many options I saw and was waiting to see what he chose. I'd of wemt a bit lower on the AL to plan ahead for a hollow, but still nice!
Yes, best decision, thank you
Great teacher who doesn't ramble on!!
Amazing. You have such vision! Thanks again!
Brilliant!
Two trees from one! Fantastic choice!.....Cant wait to see both, and please video when you seperate the airlayer.....exciting!!
Respected Mr. Peter,
Your Uttering yourself 'fool' depicts how far you are from ego, proud and
selfcenterdness . In fact, you are full
of with inner - beauty. This type of 'fool'
is thousand thousand times better
than a scholar. Mr. Peter, you are
earning love, regard, respect......
We wish you a long healthy & active life..
Thank you Thakur sahib
Beautiful
Awesome... another video...can't wait to see the update on that one..😘.
good bonsai
I think this is the best choice and the beautiful nebari also kan be used for a future bonsai if it sprauts out.
Literally said “yesssss!” When I realised king Chan did a part 4
Great video
Intelligent idea Peter 🙏
I found an update to this tree on "potting on air layerings" posted in September 2021! It's the last tree in that Video. He checked the bag, some roots where there but not enough. He closed it again. I am really curious if he potted it in the meantime. Like for visibility!
Wow that's an impressive maple
The best camera man I have seen. A true treasure
Good eye to see this solution Peter, lovely. Was there ever a follow-up on this tree, please?
A very useful demonstration for me thank you. The lower part of this trunk is somewhat puzzling regarding new growth. I wonder how that will happen when all the energy to going to the top and trying to produce new roots in the months ahead. Fascinating. I love the maple it is a wonderful tree and I always enjoy seeing the many different sizes and colours in your surrounding nursery. Kind regards
Thank you for all your videos 😎 keep them coming
Fantastico diventerà un bellissimo bonsai complimenti
Thanks Peter
I enjoy all the videos!
I've been growing my own sphagnum like moss in my nursery. It works better than baged mosses and no out of pocket expenses. You have shared a lot with me if you want I explain my technique with you for that but privately, you know a very important trad secret.
Sphagnum moss grows around my pond but not enough for all my needs.
Yes, sir, I will give up something to have a tree like that! 😄. Happy New Year, looking forward to more great videos in 2021.
Super
i like the gel iba .clonex type is my go to
Feliz Año Nuevo! Como siempre, todo un instructor: generoso en la transmisión del conocimiento. Muchas gracias Don Peter!
I was of the understanding the cambium needed to be removed for successful air layering so you leave the cambium on Peter?
You have to strike a balance because if you remove all the cambium the air layer wont take. Just take a bit off.
Most interesting last year was the first year I tried some air layering one was successful others failed I took the cambium totally off this year I'll leave some on thanks for your personal reply Peter you're the best
I would air layer right above the truck damage then make two trees. One as a twin truck then maybe broom style from the bottom.
There are many options - just like in life.
Turned out very nice, future updates on this tree will be interesting. I'm a little confused about the airlayering technique: I've been told to remove the cambium completely to avoid the tree healing. It seems to work for me but then again, I've never airlayered a maple. Maybe different species need different methods?
Very interesting video. It would be nice to know, 2 year later, if the layering was succesfull, and maybe have a new video with result. Thank you sir.
Wonder how the tree is doing now. Looks promising
How about using an old ketchup squirt bottle, they sell empty ones, and put your powder in their. Then after wetting the scored bark, you can then shoot the powder on to the scored area from the bottle. Might be an easier way of doing it.
Sir
Namsakar
You didnt forget even small tips from Indian gardeners
Happy new year Peter uncle!
I’m 11minutes in and all I see is that one long shoot he mentioned at the start being the new leader and air layering above, for a desktop sized top and dramatic garden sized base, sweeping towards my right shoulder (short term). Actually cringed when Peter trimmed it. 🙂
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, is there a particular time of the year that might be better for air layering?
Spring is best - Here in Surrey I start my airlayerings in April
This air layering is slightly different to the other videos Peter has done. In the other videos he scraped the white of the trunk heavily with a knife to remove the layer under the bark, Not sure why he didn't do it on this, is it because the tree is so large?
Why would they stop exporting moss? Everyone relies on it for hanging baskets, orchids, etc. It's pretty cheap here in Canada too. I'll have to look into this..
Mannnn very awesome Sir absolutely impressive! But hey, Master Chan can two air layerings be made from that? You know from up hire on the ugly part? So have a total of three Bonsai?
Yes. you can
Pls Help Peter or anyone . After attempting air layer on several trees ( ficus and 2 maples ) I have had no success . The areas got green with algae and never produces roots . I have done it exactly as Peter shows with root hormone plastic bag, sphagnum etc . I have made sure to remove at least an inch and half of bark and cadmium layer all around the trunks so trees did not just ignore the cut. WHAT am I doing wrong ? Thanks
Never give up - Try again in the Spring. I am sure it will be OK next time.
So after you bring the root up , will you cut down the bottom part?
how much is the stump? :)
Very interesting video peter.
I have a question, sorry for my ignorance, could i make two airlyrings at the same time on the same tree? Thank you so much. Stay save. And happy new year
Yes
Hi Mr Chan.any update on this maple?
Can you do grafting?
Can you grow maple in door in a warm climate?
where's a good place online to purchase the trays you use to grow your trees in? I'm looking at milk crates on amazon and I can find things similar to what you use, but I'm curious if there's a cheap source anywhere that I dont know of. Thanks!
These are baskets that Nursery growers use for carrying plants - Ask your local nursery if they can get them for you. If you live near us, I will sell you a few.
@@peterchan3100 unfortunately I'm only near you in spirit! I'm located in new york outside of the city. I'll ask my local nursery about what they have! appreciate the reply and all the knowledge you share :)
I liked the scar i would have air layered the higher leader😢
Hi Peter, any recommendation what spaghnum moss to use for air layerings when the one from New Zealand is not available anymore (which seems to be the case already according to shops)? Moss from Chile and China seems to be not as good...
Alex- i have made airlayers without Sphagnum moss, which is not sustainable
As a medium in the same way peat is so damaging Environmentally.
@@stuartbaines2843 hey stuart. while digging up peat moss is indeed not sustainable (peat moss is aging plant material over many years) spaghnum moss is living material which can be artificially horticultured and farmed in a sustainable manner. E.g. checkout this company in new zealand: besgrow.com/about-us/
Spaghnum moss has excellent attributes for air layerings which are not given with other media/soils (e.g. antifungal effects and massive water holding capacity).
You can use any kind of stringy moss. I sometimes use the moss I rake off the lawn. Its just that the NZ moss is sold in large quantities by our horticultural supplier. Some moss also comes from China but there are also some suppliers in the UK.
Can you not get the moss from Canada?
I am sure moss grows everywhere. I have seen it in Algonquin park - Ontario?
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😛😛😛😛
I wish I could have the cuttings he doesn't use. I know he usually uses them but sometimes he doesn't always have the room.
If you live nearby - you can come and take them for free
Just sell it to them and let them decide 😂
You crack me up I love your videos!
the man's decisions are for 20 years later, I got into bonsai at age 45 and Im in live with it but teallize Im too old to enjoy anything I grow ☹ stay away from this unless your 15 and starting with at least 1000 maple saplings for a healthy variety
While I understand your point I tend to disagree. For me, just training the trees, playing around with different species is very interesting and even therapeutic. As long as you enjoy the process of training the trees, nothing is lost. Perhaps the people who are still here when we are gone will continue working on the trees. Or perhaps not. Either way, doing what you like has its own rewards.
