  • Pedal off to the 1890's with me, because today we're making some Belle Epoque/ late Victorian cycling clothes!
    With new innovations in bicycle technology happening towards the end of the Victorian era, cycling sky rocketed as a popular past time. When you combine a the latest hobby with the Victorian's love for having an outfit for every occasion, you get cycling fashion. And let's be real. Aren't puff sleeves just divine?

    A tip for the future, from years of dying experience - ALWAYS, ALWAYS dye before making the item. For the exact reason you just experienced. You never know how many times it will need to go through the process to achieve the effect you want.
    If you do have to dye an existing item, don't do it in the washer. Do it by hand in the tub. You will have much more control over the amount of agitation the seams will endure.
    That said, the color you achieved was really nice. If you don't point out the parts you aren't happy with no one else will ever notice them.

      Dyeing the whole of the fabric has the added benefit that if it gets blotchy or uneven, you can just cut around those parts. I've never once achieved a completely even result but it's usually not a problem if it's not on the finished garment!

    I love the final result! Very sweet and practical at the same time. Like some other viewers, I was perplexed when you didn't dye the fabric before making the outfit. If nothing else, it's a whole lot easier to iron a flat piece of fabric than those puffy sleeves.

    That striped blouse gives me Victorian Beetlejuice vibes!
    I'd suggest dying fabric before making. I'm sure I've seen other makers recommending to do it in that order for several reasons, as well, so I think seams on delicate fabrics falling apart could be added to that list. That was pretty devastating! 😩

    Despite the mishaps I think flat lining the linen gave it a wonderful drape and structure!

    The men of that era would have passed out from your cuteness!!! ❤ Just beautiful! My grandfather told me when he was a boy, they would wait at crosswalks when it had rained so they could get a glimpse at the ladies ankles when they lifted their dresses to walk through some water on the sides of the streets! 😂😂 That was almost pornographic for them! 😮 Had they seen you twirl that skirt like that back then…😂😂 Just too cute!

    what an utter nightmare! I feel so bad for you for how the fabric came apart . . .
    the finished garent looks so so adorable and great and suits you and i start to share your faible for those sleeves, but making this must have been hell! Thanks for shareing it though, I am definitly paranoig when working with lose weaves now!
    I am kind of in awe that you still finished it and how you managed to save it!

  • @theplussizecostumer

    I'm so sorry you had this issue. The outfit looks okay and I agree with your grade of C- for it. If I may suggest? Next time you want to dye a fabric, do it Before you make the garment. That way the worst thing that can happen is that all the fabric shrinks and not the whole garment.

    • @thesewloartist
      @thesewloartist  2 роки тому +1

      I know it really sucked! I don’t think that would have fixed it though 🤔 I obviously pre-wash everything so it didn’t really “shrink.” I think I would have just been postponing the inevitable. If it didn’t fall apart on the third dye bath, it would have fallen apart on the third wash instead 😓

    You are so cute. No matter what happens you stay positive. It turned out great. Don’t beat yourself up. I do have one question? I thought some of the clothing was a bit longer during those times. I have my great grandmothers brown denim riding skirt that buttons down the front and when unbuttoned it becomes a riding pants. It comes just above the ankle.
