I made a 100 year old sweater on a 30 year old knitting machine | Victorian Cycling sweater

- I set out to recreate a sweater in the Met's collection and learned a lot on the way. The Victorian cycling sweater was an early example of sports wear. A pattern for this sweater was published in The Delineator in 1897. I translated that pattern into a pattern generator and then knit the sweater on my Brother 270.

This was so cool! As someone who loves historical costuming, seeing you break down how the original was made and all was super cool. And you said you’d make the band at the waist wider to make it more of a feature, but I wonder if it’s the way it is for easy of being tucked into a skirt without riding around? Basically, as a channel for the skirt’s waistband if you were to wear it tucked in? If so, I think that could explain why it’s not more of a feature. 🤔
The mic bit at the end was great. I giggled. Very fun ending.
VERY BEAUTIFUL! You are soooo talented! Bravo!
Great job! A suggestion for the next time, whether it is this pattern or another garment. The shoulders carry the weight of the garment and sleeves, using a length of twill tape, your shoulder length, sewn along the seam inside would keep the shoulders from stretching. I like your code pattern approach to patterns.
Not a machine knitter, probably won't ever be, but this was really neat! Gonna take away the tip of reinforcing with crocheting a chain
You are amazing! I love your approach to knitting, I'm not in IT, but your way of processing and sharing information is just what I need ❤️
Oh boy
Iv had a Chunky Knitting Machine for 20 years and I’m going to unbox and set it up tonight. Thank you. Anix
That turned out beautifully. Your arm holes aren’t quite high enough up into your armpits. That’ll give you much more range of motion. You might also want to make the shoulders narrower. The late 1890s with the giant sleeves had a shoulder seam cut pretty far in for modern sensibilities.
Great job!!! You inspiring me to try it too. Love the retro style!
Me and your machine are the same age. Keep it alive please 🙂
Wow! That was amazing. Thanks for sharing your process.
you do awesome work. Great aproach, great outcome. wow
I love that sweater!
absolutely love this!
I just got an awesome sweater maker from the thrift store. I can't wait to use it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Brilliant. Loved this., Love you!
Great work
Cheers

This video made my day! Super cool to see this done
Amazing job!
Gorgeous!
So cool! Well done. Your like an engineer figuring all that out. 👍
I am an engineer.

Lol that explains it! 😆
Excellent job! 🎉 You have my subscription, love old clothes from many different time periods so this appeals greatly!
Love it!
I love your process and progress reoorts.
Beautiful job - well done!
Wow. This is so cool. I only understood about half of it because I'm a hand knitter who's never even seen a knitting machine, but this was so cool.
Thanks for sharing! It was a very challenging project
OMG! I love your videos. I have a blast with your creativity and how you tell us through the process. For one and something years of machine knitting it is GREAT! Well, I also love that it is adapted for "modern humans" HAHAHA
Loved this video! You are entertaining to watch and very creative. thanks
"Not bad"? That's amazing! You are extremely talented. It always blows my mind how professional, symmetrical, and most importantly beautiful everything you make turns out. You make me wanna try crocheting a sweater or start practicing my knitting again, I was never very good at knitting but I love the look of knit, so many types of patterns you can do with knit than can be done with crochet, but the same could be said about crochet and knitting as well. Anyways though beautiful sweater absolutely love it.
Absolutely awesome I wish to learn that machine, just pulled out my addi machine and cab do alot but now it's time to flatbed lol
Oh the final sweater looks soooooooooo good!
Love your videos. Thank you for documenting the process.
You are so welcome!
Amazing that you found the original pattern!!!! 🎉
Hah! Love your approach, your style, and your content. So excited to see more. Machine knitting is incredible and I knew nothing about it. Loving your coding approach too.
This was such an interesting video! I loved the transfer tool microphone bit. I've been really interested in this sweater for a while, so your modernized pattern generator is something I'm really interested in, at some point later when I have time!
That was phenomenal! Can totally see how it replicated the original
It's so cute!!! This turned out really well. I love the overall shape👏
Soo cool! Machine knitting is so baffling to me 😂
But then again, I only know the very very basics of handknitting
On the machine the process of which buttons to push and how and in what way to swap and move the yarn between stitches looks so complex 😅 but also somehow easier or at least faster than hand knitting - so interesting!
The end result is amazing, I love these jumpers!
Menina que talento!
Parabéns 👏👏👏👏😍🇧🇷
maravilhoso trabalho , parabéns!!!!!!!!!
That's stunning!! It's looks like a lot of work. It's well worth the 20 you spent on material. I think I will stick around.
I’m a crocheter and all knitting is voodoo to me, so it seems, while faster on the machine, something like this (which is amazing!) would actually be easier by hand 😂
Thank you for sharing this! I've been eyeing this pattern for a while. Some bloggers had noted that while the Delineator pattern was written for hand knitters the garment in the photograph was definitely machine knit, hence your racking stitch and Bill Gates revelation.
Wow, I didn't think knitting machines were that advanced back then. Can you link me to the blogs that talked about the Met sweater? I'd love to see that discussion!
You did a great job!! Looking forward to the Bill Gates sweater too 😁🎉
Ficou muito linda!👏👏👏👏😍
Thank you so much for identifying the rick rack ribbing! I’m going to hand knit one of these and I’ve been experimenting for a few days trying to reproduce what I see in the Met version. I was getting close but this saves me time & sanity 🙏 🙏 🙏 Happy knitting!
I would love to see your version when it's ready!
That sweater is gorgeous! Could one possibly handknit something using only a pattern made for machine-knitting, do you think?
"These proportions sound ridiculous"
Um... This is the first time I've perfectly fit a size chart since i was a teenager. (Not the size in the original pattern)
It’s giving mrs trenchbull lol 😂 #matilda
❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍
The "easy" answer to revisiting antique patterns with weird measurements is to create a block. It's basically a template of your self. Recreate the design using your block, in plain fabric like an old sheet from good will or something, break it down, take measurements then convert that into knit. If you are used to doing it, you can skip the part of making it in fabric, and just base it off your block.
Woow
👋👍
How long did it take you to make this?
Many hours over the span of about two weeks.
I appreciate that picture of bill gates every time I see it, but I did not expect to see it here
No, you didn’t make the met sweater.the fit is entirely different, the elegance is lost.
You can say you were inspired by the met, but that sweater is the equivalent of an Asian sweater shop knock off.
