During the summer of 2017, large schools of menhaden showed up here on Cape Cod. Schools of thousands of menhaden could be seen just offshore many of Cape Cod's beaches.
On this particular day I was working on my new house, which my wife and I had just purchased and were renovating. A call from a friend came in during the early afternoon, informing me that huge striped bass were feeding on menhaden off one of the Cape's beaches.
I hustled to ready my kayak and drove as quickly (and safely!) as I could to where my friend had reported the action. Instantly I saw the menhaden schools and could see they were being attacked by not just huge striped bass, but huge bluefish and gigantic seals as well.
I had only been fly fishing for a few months, so my casting technique was pretty rough!
I hooked 3 monster striped bass, with two of the fish bending the hooks on my fly and escaping. Fortunately one of the largest of the trip, a beautiful 46 inch striper, did not come unbuttoned and I was able to successful land, revive and release her.
Plus at the 31 minute mark in the video I receive a phone call from my loving wife Lauren. Watch until the end and LMK if you can relate!!! LOL
Back in 2017 I published a much shorter version of this video which you can access here ( • Fly Fishing Cape Cod f... ). Today I thought it'd be cool to share the full 34 minute video from the trip. What an experience it was!
I hope you enjoy ✌🏻

00:10 - shot of the fly I'm using
00:41 - seal sighting!

My arms were burning and I was shaking with you. Nice camera work 👍Typical wife conversation 😂
Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, very typical convo! LOL
this whole video start to finish is absolutely priceless
LOL, that was definitely a memorable trip. Thanks for watching!
I’m so jealous ! Phenomenal video and you played that fish so well . What a cow !
Thanks for watching! It was definitely a day I will never forget. I hope that fish is still swimming around out there somewhere. By now he'd probably be over 50 pounds.
I am from the other side of the country, the Pacific Northwest. YT just suggested this video. I was just back at Cape Cod and was lucky enough to catch two, my first Stripers on a fly from a boat that my wife and I chartered. I got them on a 6 wt and on a fly that works in my home waters (we don't have Stripers here but we do have several species we can fish for in saltwater). I did not measure them but I estimate they were 26" or so. The next day I got two from the beach (Atlantic side). These were about 18" or so, also on a fly and the same 6 wt but a smaller version of the same pattern. I can definitely see why they got their reputation. I'm so lucky my wife is totally supportive of my fishing but we are also in a different phase of life. We've been retired for five years. Tight lines! I'll be back!
That's great! Thank you for sharing your story. Awesome comment! I am glad you had such a nice experience here on the Cape. Feel free to check out my website too myfishingcapecod.com if you want to "keep in touch" with the Cape while you're on the west coast. The fish will be waiting for your return! 🎣
Such an epic catch… Nice touch on the fly too
2:40-Seal-'hello"
LOL! Yup!
Looks like a blast!!! Congrats on a beast!!!
Thanks Cody, tons of fun!
So Awesome. Great videos as always.
Pumped you enjoyed that one Lonell, thanks for tuning-in!
Awesome Fish! The end with your girlfriend/wife is what we all go through as fisherman... lol
LOL, yes I know you and many others can relate to the phone call at the end! Love it!
Watching this is like an updated version of the classic; "The Old Man and the Sea"
by Hemingway.. "The Young Man and the Sea" .... Keep your hand on the grip! Quickest way to snap your rod is to try to put more presure by reaching above the grip. Always try to pull big fish off balance, by pulling them to the side, when they adjust, then pull them to the other side, you could even work that cow to the beach. Please Be Well, and Stay Strong
PS. There are plenty of How to fight, and land big fish on the fly. BTW- That cow had to be around 44 pounds. GO YOU!!!
Great tips William! Thank you! I'm sure you're not only helping me improve my fly fishing skills, but you're also helping anyone else who might read this comment. Tight lines and please keep in touch!
@@MyFishingCapeCod Good Sir, you are graciously kind!
After WW II my father worked as a caretaker of a local beach Here in The Forgotten Borough of NYC. I was conceived, and raised in the house on that beach. I spent the earliest years of my life as the feral prince of Midland Beach, with a ruby spaniel freely roaming that beach. When my mother wanted to know where I was, she’d wisely call “Debbie” and the cocker would pick up her head and bark a reply. More than likely my mother would find me asleep in an old 16’ wooden skiff my father kept on the side of the house. Being the son, of a son, of a fisherman, fishing is in my D.N.A.
I have been beached for the last dozen years taking care of my folks in these final years. With their passing, I decided to pick the fly rod and head for the beach.
“By three methods we may learn wisdom:
First, by reflection, which is noblest;
Second, by imitation, which is easiest;
and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”
Confucius
At almost 70 to update myself, method 2 is my only realistic choice. So, I took myself back to school @ You Tube University!
That is where I found you!
Orvis has a very good series on “Long Rods”, and “Salt Water.”
Please Be Well, and Stay Strong, I am looking forward to your future uploads!

You have more courage than I do. I don't think I'm taking my yak in the ocean these days with all the big sharks on the cape....
Yes there are definitely tons of huge great whites around, and I do think about them while out there on the kayak and when snorkeling.
Man... I gotta do some kayak fishing with you! Great video
Glad you enjoyed that vid! I got lucky that day in the kayak. Hopefully the pogie schools will return this year! 🙏🏻
Wow that's awesome!! I starting fishing off fly rod, for trout, Largemouth bass, but I want to try out fly fishing, for stripers soon.
Go for it! I hope you catch a big one. Keep me posted!
Great catch bro!
Thanks man!
That back cast strike was nice
I'll definitely never forget that one! Thanks for watching 🎣
Bro that was awesome...what kind of fly rod were you using ?
It was nuts! The rod is a Sage 9 weight, 990-4, 9 foot, #9 line www.themightyfish.com/products/copy-of-sage-x-4-piece-fly-rod?variant=12358822953073. LMK if you have any other questions. 🎣
Awesome catch! What GoPro stick are you using?
Right now I'm using this selfie stick amzn.to/2E7cgJj ✌🏻
What pound leader? Can you drop your rod/tig
I was using 20 pound leader with a 9 weight Sage Motive rod. LMK if I can help answer anything else. 👍🏻
Hey, I’m from Eastham, just got kayak this year, where do you go? Thx
Nice! Eastham is a great place for kayak fishing. Wellfleet Bay is one of y favorite areas.
Nice, Phlip Wilson would be proud. Heading there next year for stripes, around end of July first week of August. Hopefully fishing for them is good around the Cape somewhere. Ill be bringing all types of tackle, including fly gear. Looking for some local knowledge to get introduced to some scaley critters. Any help would be appreciated. Great fish brother.
Sounds like you have a great trip planned Vern! Late July/August is a great time for striper fishing here on Cape. Usually the canal, Cape Cod Bay, and the Outer Cape will have some nice bass at that time of the year. We have a great community with lots of helpful resources over at myfishingcapecod.com which you might want to check out. LMK! Tight lines 🎣
The part of your fly line that gives it strength is the mono or braided core, not the polymer float or sink coating. Don’t worry about that for strength unless it gets to the core. Nice fish. I catch Stripers on the fly in freshwater in Texas.
Good to know. Thank you!
What fly were you using? And where were you fishing in cape cod?
Hey Noah 👋Supporting members of My Fishing Cape Cod, can learn more details about this adventure over on my website 👉🏻myfishingcapecod.com/46in-striper-fly-rod/ ✌🏻
Wow!!
That was a good one. Wife seems cool also.
Thanks for watching Drew, and yes, the wife is a keeper!
2:43 the seal like YOO!
Yeah I thought the seal was going to take a bite out of the striper, but thankfully he kept his distance!
This is like Moby Dick novel, on video version. Well done, sir!
What fly were you using?
Here's a link to the exact fly I was using 👍myfishingcapecod.com/wp-content/uploads/pogie-fly.jpeg
Seal population has skyrocketed in the cape and eating a lot of stripers and attracting a lot of sharks
Yes for sure, there are great whites all over the place these days!
Most striped bass over 25 lbs are female. Great catch
Thanks for the comment! It was an awesome experience and a great fish. Tight lines 🎣😎✌🏻
@@MyFishingCapeCod I just mentioned it so your viewers and anyone who would potentially keep a bigger fish (when legal) will know that the bigger ones are female.
Like top fish parabéns
Obrigado amigo!
2:41 the seal wants a snack
Yeah! He was feeding well on those pogies.
I’ve only ever caught a striper on a fly rod one and it was only like five pounds lol
Keep at it! I'm sure you'll eventually get a bigger one 👍🏻
what a battle 👏
One I will not soon forget! Thanks for watching 😎
Nice fish
Thanks Ben! Tight lines!
Nice fish! However, it is highly unlikely that fish survived after you released it. It was kept out of the water FAR too long in the interest of making a video. Past 15 seconds out of the water survival is at best only 50%. That fish was far greater than 15 seconds.
When can I start fishing for holdovers in 2020?
There's some out there, I caught one back on January 30th. They are few and far between though! Be safe if you give it a try and keep us posted!
@@MyFishingCapeCod thank you!!! New to yak fishing
@@MyFishingCapeCod what kind of pole would u use? I have a 2 person fishing kayak...obviously striper fishing.. not sure what type of pole would fit best
Congratulations on your cow bass with the fly rod . Being a pro photographer for 45 years you need a lengthy toutorial on your presentation.. There are quite a few sequences that are lacking in your video story telling.. The overhead camera s--..I don’t wish to dwell on this issue but there is much room for improvement.. Good luck !!
Roger that. Thank you for the criticism, lol.
I apologize if I seem to have come on too coarse.. Just the way I was trying to enjoy the video..You had a great moment to share with us and it kept on going downhill especially at the end..You handled that space in time quite well..
Way to fight and on the fly in a yak and shooting a vid!! I just started fly fishing with my yak in Lake Mead. Pretty cool man
It was definitely an awesome experience, one that I will probably never be able to repeat! Good luck this season fly fishing Lake Mead. What kind of fish do you catch up there?
Stripper mostly but also am/ lg mouth. Stock bows below Hoover Dam
Not keeping them?
Not this one, it was released, but I have kept them before.
@@MyFishingCapeCod right on, looks like fun
Time for a 10 wt ;)
Yep, that would of been helpful. Could of used some more backbone in the rod!
I hope you aren't doing this where the white sharks are.
Hopefully fishing in buzzards bay ,much safer their
Awesome job though ryan, life is great
Life is great! Well said. And yes I try to avoid the great whites, but they do frequent some of the areas I fish. With that said, you'll never catch me kayak fishing around Monomoy or along the Outer Beach!
Exactly why I'm single!
LOL!!!
