  • I have a few weeds in the lawn that I would like to take care of in advance of our fall overseeding. To accomplish this, I'm going to be using Tenacity for general broadleaf weeds and clover that I have. I also have a nutsedge problem in a few areas. In this video, I'll show you how to apply and share the results I had with the applications.

Great video! I have been using sedgehammer+ myself in my Bermudagrass. Works great!

If you dig up purple nutsedge you may find a nut at the end of each root. They start out very small. When you pull on up the nuts stay in the ground. ..A new group of plants.

weird, the sedgehammer + I used didnt do anything to my yellow nutsedge, about 2 weeks later.

I just did a lawn renovation. Seeed came up good but a ton of sedge came up with it. I can’t wait to nuke it, but I think I’ll have to wait till next spring. I’m afraid of putting sedgehammer on turf grass seedlings because it’ll have to be a blanket spray.

The nutsedge you see at the surface will die off soon once winter hits (assuming you live in cool season climate). The roots (nutlets) below the ground will likely survive and pop up next season. Try the sedgehammer then.

@@TheLawngineer that’s reassuring. Thanks. And yes, northeast Ohio, the ground will freeze.

Here’s what the makers of Sedgehammer say on their website:
“CAN I USE SEDGEHAMMER ON A NEW LAWN?
It is recommended that the grass be allowed to establish a good root system prior to applying SedgeHammer. If overseeding, wait a minimum of two weeks before applying. If sodding or reseeding allow at least 4 weeks before an application.”
I would imagine, they mean when you are in the growing season. Not sure where you are located, but if sod was just laid and it’s too cold to grow. I would hold off until it starts to grow and establishes that root system.

@@TheLawngineer thanks a lot for replying, I am from India and it’s moderate cold out here, my SOD is zoysia matrella it’s slow grower, so I think I should wait atleast 4 weeks before applying anything!

Could you have put sedgehammer and tenacity in the same tank and used both simultaneously?

    • @TheLawngineer

That’s a good question. Maybe one I need to experiment with to find the answer. I suppose you could mix up a small batch to test compatibility (make sure it doesn’t coagulate) then spray a small area to see if it works.

Spot spraying Tenacity a fan tip will create larger white grass areas that spray more.good grass than the single weed.
I switched to the cone nozzle tip and adjusted it to a very tight small circle to spot spray the weed and much less good grass was sprayed,
like 70% of the fan tip spray hits good.grass .
The fan tip in this vidlr clearly shows where Tenacity caused squares amd rectangular shapes of bleaching damage to the good grass surrounding the single weed, a tight stream or tight cone saves wasted product, saves turf stress, saves money and looks better.
The white lasts 2 weeks or more and a second and third application will extend white spots to nearly half the season.
UA-cam turfgrass channels love the fan tip, but its not logical for spot spraying. That one change was big for the lawn. I remember dormant grass during winter with white squares from fan tip sprays that didn't grow out before dormancy.

Thanks for sharing this with me! I’ll give it a try the next time I spot spray. I’ve upgraded to TeeJet nozzles. If you have a recommendation on a cone TeeJet, let me know. I really appreciate the feedback! You are absolutely correct about most UA-camrs using the fan tip. That’s where I learned it from! I never thought of changing it!

Milorganite used to have an online testimonial submission process. Check out their website, they still might do it. After submitting the testimonial, they would send a gift. T-shirts, Hats, rain gauge, and other swag. One time, it was a surprise. Another time, you had a choice. They would switch it up.
