- I'm on a mission to see which of these products kill nutsedge the best. Ortho nutsedge killer, certainty herbicide, or image kills nutsedge. I think the results show that different products may be better for different people with different size lawns and different budgets. Here are the affiliate product link if you are interested:

Sedgehammer is letting me down a little; after 2 applications (in upstate/ Western NY) most of my customers still have nutsedge. I HATE nutsedge.
Solid video--really appreciate the before and after; not too many channels have the patience to show whether things work and just show the application but not the results.

When these seasonal nuts edge grass pops up just breaks your spirits every time… I have the patience to get a stool out and pluck them one by one, but they tend to break off from the top, leaving the roots still in the ground. I did spray image the other day hoping it helps. Now watching your video, I’m going to a local store to pick up a bottle of ortho, in my opinion seems to be the winner with quicker results
Inspired by this video, I sprayed my backyard, which has several small areas of nutsedge, with the Ortho product two days ago. This morning the leaves are turning yellow so they seem to be on their way out. And this is even though it rained 1/8” late yesterday. I was afraid the rain would wash the Ortho off the leaves. But, regardless, I’m impressed so far.

Dang dude. The effort and thoroughness put into this one is top notch. Super detailed, good info! Call me crazy, as I know everyone says not to pick it out by hand, but that's my solution! May come back to bite me in the end, but for this season, pretty much nutsedge free other than the little I've pulled. In the past, I've seen good results with the Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns plus Crabgrass Killer hose end, the orange one. Surprisingly good for 5 bucks. Used to use Bayer, now Bio-Advanced, but those didn't have the active ingredient for nutsedge. Again, well done on this one!

Great video. Home Depot had Image. I bought image. My lawn just has a small area with heavy nutsedge occupation. So hand spraying will do me fine. Thank you!

Question.... since your yard was about 5000 ssquare feet. And the bottle covers 5000 sq ft. Was the your bottle empty at the end of application? Because my front yard is the same footage and after an even spray I still had half the bottle left.. thanks

How were each applications on the grass? I bought the Orthos and used it on areas of my nutsedge growth but it harmed my blue grass as well.

Certainty will take a week before you see any effect. Be patient. Also for our area there is another called Dismiss South. It works well too and doesn't take but about 2 days to see it working.

Can you use sedgehammer on Bermuda seedlings? Most of lawn is 1 inch thick but nutsedge is taking over.

Thanks for this great video. I treated part of my backyard with the Image hose-end nutsedge sprayer and the Bermuda grass got pretty brown. I'm hoping it comes back. I have more in the front yard and will try Ortho, based on your results. It doesn't look like any of the products yellowed your grass. Was it Bermuda?
I used the Image in a sprayer with a surfactant and a dye and it didn't kill anything--yes the doses were correct... then I used Sedgehammer and it worked great... cost more than the other products but did the job without harming the bermuda in the backyard nor the fescue in the fronts.
What about using these products in flowerbeds where Nutsedge has taken over?
The slow acting products like sedge hammer take a while to cause noticeable damage but the slowness give the active ingredient time to work through the system into the roots and get to the actual nut so there is an actual chance the nutsedge won't just come right back like it does with the fast acting products the just burn off the top and have no time to get into the system. Sledgehammer has a real chance that plant doesn't return. The more properly the product is applied the better the chance it is fully into the plants system. Not mowing before or after can make the difference of half the nutlets death to 95% Nutlet death. 0r half of a season vs a full season or 2 full seasons to have zero nutsedge coming back.

Sedgehammer is the best for nutsedge in my experience. I get it on Amazon. Trying image this year just to see how it works.
@Hello it worked well, just took 3 weeks to work. Main benefit to image is it will take care of a lot of other problems in warm season grass whereas sledgehammer only has one use. So it depends on what you need
Three different herbicides that work differently too. The active ingredient in Ortho is sulfentrazone, which gives a faster burndown but may require a second application for a complete kill. Also, sulfentrazone has temperature restrictions, so mind the label and dont even think of using a surfactant with this stuff if you are using a concentrate that isnt a hose end application. The Image is a slower kill, but I have also found that it can damage surrounding turf if used in high temperatures or on even slightly drought stressed turf. Certainty (sulfosulfuron) like all sulfonylurea herbicides (Celsius, Sedgehammer, etc.) take longer to work, but are typically highly effective without having temperature restrictions, and even work faster in hotter temps. Always check your label and respect the application rates.
Also, the active ingredients in the three products you tested will kill more than just nutsedge. All three will kill poa to varying degrees, and sulfentrazone especially makes a great kicker for a 3-way herbicide to increase effectiveness on broadleaf weeds.

Mystery weed could be torpedo grass, another sedge. It has a rhizome like growth habit and tends to come out in bunches. The base of the leaves has a reddish tint and it makes seed clusters similar to nutsedge.
Mystery weed looks like Kyllinga, a variant of nutsedge that I have killed with the Ortho nutsedge product.
Sedge hammer works if you apply it a few times. Just be patient. After a year of a few applications 1-2 months apart there is no more nutsedge in my Bermuda lawn. You also have to be careful if you have lawn service as might bring the nutsedge from other yards.
I have Bermuda lawn too but Sedgehammer never worked for me even with multiple applications
The Image can be had in a hose-end sprayer, too.

It's not that hard to get nutsedge to turn yellow, but it's really, really hard to keep it from coming back.
A true sedge feels like a three sided straw when rolled between your fingers. Pull it out of the ground, roll between fingers near the previous above ground level.
Awesome job man! I’ve used Certainty a few times and you hit it on the head.. takes 2-3 weeks to get the results. But it is good stuff. Celsius is the same way. 👍🏼

@@TheLawnTools Thanks! I went with the Ortho and within 24 hours I could see my nutsedge getting sick. Within 4 days it was clear that it was all dying and my Bermuda turf didn't seem adversely affected. My only complaint with this product is it's impossible to know how much of the product is left since the water from the hose fills the bottle. I basically just had to spray until I thought I'd hit 5,000 sq ft. I'm pretty sure I ran out since the last patch of nutsedge didn't seem to die as fast as the rest.
Also I'm curious about your lawn. It is so short. Is it Tiff Bermuda? I have the run-of-the-mill Bermuda and there is no way I could cut it that short.

I have Tifway 419. However, there is some common Bermuda in my front yard that does pretty well at 0.5”. It’s frustrating 😂

Thanks! Yes, the image and certainty take a while but I think if I would have mowed those areas, the nutsedge may have taken longer to get tall. I’m speculating though. Sometimes you just want to see dead weeds fast 😂👍🏼

Yea pulling won’t make it worse... just really hard to get the nutlets all out so it never comes back. Takes multiple apps to kills all the nutlets with herbicide too I think so if you only have a few there’s no harm in that
I find with nutsedge you have to spray close to the root to kill it off

Sitting in my back yard right now and the only of these sections that seems to have come back is the ortho hose end one. So that one worked faster but doesn’t seem to last as long. Maybe the other spots will come back later in the summer. Only time will tell
How old is your sod at this point ? I have 2 month old Zorra Zoysai and am a bit worried the Orthos is going to kill it.

Nutsedge has been a crazy ongoing battle for me but others have told me that they feel the products that work faster, don’t last as long so you can take that for what it’s worth

Mine is Bermuda. It has taken a lot of ground leveling and TLC to get the grass to this point but I have no special training for grass so anybody can do it if I can.

The Lawn Tools the top dies off pretty easy with SoB but it has a nasty habit of coming back next year because the bulbs survive. Hopefully ya got it though.

If you mow first then test, all three products work faster, better, and smarter. The above ground stems are the problem in this video. Mow and then spray. You are trying to kill the rhizomes, down in the soil. Not the vegetation above ground. You are welcome.

Nutsedge is the scourge of my lawn. Ortho seemed to do the trick, but it keeps raising its ugly head following year, so you gotta stay on it. After nuclear war, nutsedge & roaches will rule.
