Is it really worth spending hundreds of dollars on aftermarket tail lights for your GR86 or BRZ? Aftermarket options have been starting to pop up lately with new unique designs, but are any of them actually better than the stock tail lights with some slight modifications? An aftermarket version of the stock taillights that retain the red portion while adding sequential turn signals would be perfect imo

Nothing will beat the previous gen Valenti taillights. The new gen taillight design, both stock and aftermarket, is so limited because of the rudimentary shape Toyota/Subaru went with.
The Valenti Revos were 👌 it's the one I'm currently running on my FRS
I was saying the same thing also. Something about those Valenti lights that I just love.
I'm still sticking with the stock tail lights, I really do think they look and flow the best with the body style of the GR86. I have added your overlays though and will say that they have elevated the look 100%!!
We haven't seen the overlays on your channel yet. We'd love to see how they turn out, as we're debating what to do on our builds.
The bird noises in the background make the overlay install that much more chill!

Stock taillights with dark glossy tint overlays for me. Hoping there's something fresh that comes to market or an affordable clear lens option for the OEM style. Clears aren't for everyone but I think it'd look amazing with overlays on my steel grey GR86.
Kevin, great video! Looking only at the stickers, Dark smoke with the red turn signals and reverse tail light is my favorite. Light smoke is my least favorite. I went with the dark smoke on the OEM orange side makers for now while I spend the dollars on the performance mods. LED is the only way to go. I replaced all the lights except for the headlights. For map lights, I went with red, I don't need to be blinded at night. For side doors, I went with GR86 lights.

I don’t have a GR86 (VB WRX owner) however we have the same issue. I don’t know of any options for tail lights right now. I did purchase overlays, dark smoke, and it looks so much better. It’s a cheap upgrade until we have options and then can make a decision on what to replace OEM with.
Those stock lights look pretty good. I like that the aftermarket ones you own have more depth to the look. If there was like an oem+ look that gave the stock ones more depth without being too busy. It would be perfect.
Yeah you're bang on for me. Gloss fully smoked on the standard taillights and the matte fully smoked for the bumper. Just waiting for my car delivery then will be getting my order on! 🖤👌
It's beautiful. I have a GT86, based in South Africa. I initially wanted to purchase the ISR Performance Dual exhaust then the AWE Touring like you previously had but duties and shipping was too crazy. So we "Fused" between the Tomei and the AWE. Except, we used 4 101mm tips to keep the TRD look with the TRD rear bumper spoiler. I wish I could show U pics but it came out absolutely amazing. It sounds similar to your Tomei setup.
I'm waiting for the right aftermarket tails, but until then the stock with overlays look best imo. Also really love the new stealth/Matt reverse overlay, that one's a must buy!
Had an FRS and miss it tons was looking at a GR86. I really loved the valenti tailights that got produced with the older Gen but curious to see if they’re gonna come out with one kinda similar for these guys. Really love the Aem Tuners 4th brake light reminds me of the matching one for the old gens and kinda want to see what they look like with the stock tailights I would think they’d flow nicely!

This is the only aftermarket option I'd get, but probably not for a while because of the price. Might grab the lighter smoke overlays in the meantime
Overlays just came in and installed them today, made the car look a lot better for just a couple of dollars compared to a whole new taillight

The stock reverse lights are placed way too low to do much good and they are weak anyway, so the LED upgrade is certainly worth doing, even without overlays. I'm pretty sure those overlays would be illegal in my country, though. Also, the interior lights are supposed to be dull; it's a safety issue. So be aware that road visibility can be severely marred by having bright cabin bulbs at night, especially in the wet, and especially when your eyes are dark-adapted.
I went with the stealth reverse light, red turn signal and dark smoke reflector overlay. Red on red, black on black. huge improvement imo

Overlays for sure. Don't like any aftermarket options yet better than stock.
I like both the light smoke and the dark smoke. Yes, the amber was different, but to me, it wasn't as nice as the other two.
trd makes spoiler for taillights on top the rear stock tails with overlays
Honestly I had the smoked HRS tails in my cart and was seconds from pulling the trigger but decided against it because I really just dig the look of the original lights with the dark smoke decals. I'd be paying primarily for the startup animation and the sequential signals. The HRS lights do look decent but kind of just decent. Like they aren't exactly wow-ing me. Not for the price. Waiting for better options.

I do, just didn't have it wired up since I've been switching tail lights on and off.
I'd die for a set of OEM style tail lights but in that solid flat LED style that BMW uses.

Can you try out the Noble TAS Smoked Sequential Tail Lights? I like the light up middle bar but im sure on the tail light design itself
A lot of the after market tail lights look very nice when the running lights are on, but when the running lights are off you see only the brake light activate and their brake lights look bad
I know I’ve said this before but I really hope they come out with an all red lense/housing version of these tail lights. Not a fan of smoked or clear housing
I really like the OLM scythe in smoke and red and the OLM F1 in smoke and red. I just put a deposit down on a 2023 premium mt and these will be the first replacements once it arrives.
In my opinion, those are the worst looking option available because the turn signal looks like little sperm 😅

I'm waiting on the ones from 78Works that release in June-ish, they'll be expensive but there's not many good options for this gen. I def miss my previous gen brz w/ smoked Valentis.
I'd get the overlays over after market tail lights. Used to have clear valenti when I used to have the brz. Nothing wrong with them but I think OEM looks great on the 2nd gen.

The detail about the different shape is a big thing. This is also why I disliked subispeed headlights for the WRX, because they bulge out and are a different shape.

Kev, you can't act like the Suma Performance Tail lights don't exist. It's one of the best for the 2nd gen 86 in my opinion. Even tho it doesn't have the indents that match the trunk shape, it is barely noticeable. It's the only one with a continuous "swoosh" like the Valentis on the Gen 1

For example, with the backup lights and the turn signals, leaving one side stock and one side upgraded. Or one side stock and one side with the overlay at the same time would be a way better illustration of the difference in Lumens, right?
As for aftermarket, nothing looks very good vs stock. The 1st gen yes, those terrible 2000-style Altezza style lights were terrible.
Love the yellow, and yeah would look great on white. You should add them to your shop.

I spent $900 just to get clear oem tailights, so I think $500 for a clear taillight that actually look cool is definitely worth it.

Do you have a kit for the brake lights?
I do not, as the lens of the brake light is too complex for a precut overlay. It'd need to be professionally wrapped.
Honestly stock is best so far. I've yet to see any good looking aftermarket tail lights.

The overlays on your blinkers actually help the car, for some reason the dash indicators start going really fast but the blinkers are not actually flashing. With overlays it fixes the problem. I believe I read it was something to do with the sun's glare causing the hyperblinking.
