  • Quick repair video of an Apple MacBook Pro with a faulty hard drive cable.
    For this model there are several options. Replace the hard drive cable or install the hard drive or SSD in place of the optical drive by using a 9.5mm HDD/SSD caddy.

    I'm glad I found this information that led me to this video. This happened to me last night, and I thought it was my new SSD I got in January.

    I’ve tried all options still no joy, changed hard drive, ribbon cable for HDD, used optical drive caddy for new HDD, even reset EFI by holding combinations is there anything else I can try?

      Drive could be empty itself. Press Option-Command-R upon computer startup to load Internet recovery and check if the drive is visible in recovery console.

      Place electrical tape on the cable as well as the aluminum case it touches. The aluminum case causes abrasion when it touches the cable which happens to be a known issue. I tried this on mine and it works fine now! No need to purchase a new cable....hope this helps

    I have a 2012 mid year MacBook Pro and it gets a spinning beach ball a lot and I have to reboot. The reboot takes forever. Last summer it would not boot so I went to internet recovery and it showed my hard drive as full but it’s nowhere near full. However I could exit utilities and re-enter and later have the hard drive appear showing lots of free space. When I reboot I often get a flashing circle with a line that alternates with a flashing Apple symbol. Eventually it locks on the Apple symbol and has a progress bar that takes forever. Eventually it gives me the login screen. Yesterday I had the spinning beach ball and I rebooted and it would not boot. It was giving me the circle with a line on some boot-ups or a question mark folder on other boot-ups but neither were flashing on the screen. They were solid. I went to internet recovery and it was showing a full hard drive again but after exiting and entering multiple times I was able to have my hard drive show up with lots of free space. I was able to select it as start up disk and restart and then I got my computer to slowly boot back to the login screen. Could this possibly be the hard drive cable? I have ordered one to try. The computer works fine but after some time it often gives the spinning beach ball that comes and goes. Eventually it becomes so slow that I have to power it down. This computer is garbage. I paid almost $2000 for it and it does not get heavy use and has over 500GB of free hard drive space and acts this way? I expected a lot more for the price and I don’t think I will ever buy another Apple laptop based on this experience. Also, last summer when I first had this issue I noticed the cooling fan was always running loudly and the laptop would get quite hot even with the fan going constantly. Since then I don’t hear the cooling fan and it does not ever get hot. I’m not sure what the deal is with that. At the time I removed some malware stuff after scanning it so I was thinking that had been causing the issue for me but I’m not sure.

      Did you every replace the SATA cable?

    • @newfie-dean5803
      @newfie-dean5803 5 років тому

      Jay Found yes I replaced it almost 2 weeks ago now, and the computer is now working perfectly. No more spinning beach ball or issues with start-up, etc. I ordered it on amazon and replaced it myself in about 30-40 mins. Simple job.

      You simply need the new HHD cable . The new cable will allow for faster transfer rates.

    How did you remove the two smaller screws holding the cord into place? Mine won't even budge a little bit
    What size screwdriver are you using?

    • @ComputerCaveman
      @ComputerCaveman  6 років тому

      Hi, as far as I remember Phillips #00 is the tool for the job. In your case if the screw is stuck I recommend using a 00 screwdriver with a bigger handle so you could apply pressure downwards and carefully torque you way out. Be careful not to damage the screw's head. If no precise tools are available you could ask somebody with glasses if they have one of those little glasses screwdriver key chains. I once used one of those and it worked like a charm.

    I have this issue, am hoping its the cable. rather than the drive. Plus, how important is the Led cable? :) I think I might have broke that connection removing the drive

    • @ComputerCaveman
      @ComputerCaveman  7 років тому

      Hi, I don't think the led connection is that important, but you can never be sure when it comes to Apple products. Let me know what happened :)

      I figured it out and fixed it. I fitted the cable and it booted up straight away. Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it.

    hi, can you help me with this? my macbook pro is retina version, i bought the cable Flexible HD , but i doesn't change, because you say is doesn't work ... please help me (Model No: A1278 year 2010)

    • @ComputerCaveman
      @ComputerCaveman  7 років тому

      Hi, there is no retina display prior 2012 if I am not mistaken. In retinas SSD assembly is completely different so this video is not applicable.
      In your case you should remove the back cover remove the hard drive and figure out what the part number on the cable is and then order the exact replacement one. I think there are two different cables. That said before ordering you should make sure that the problem is the cable itself. By changing the hard drive or trying if the old is recognized on another computer.
