- Time to embark on the Harry Potter journey with Chamber of Secrets!
Badd Medicine here and its Harry Potter reaction time! Here we are with Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets. Not a bad one a step up from the first. It's starting to have those dark tones to it. The second instalment of boy wizard Harry Potter's adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, based on the novel by JK Rowling. A mysterious elf tells Harry to expect trouble during his second year at Hogwarts, but nothing can prepare him for trees that fight back, flying cars, spiders that talk and deadly warnings written in blood on the walls of the school. Pretty interesting for their 2nd movie. We are really looking forward to Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban!

You do miss a lot of detail from the books so keep it in mind as a series to begin reading to your son when he's old enough.
Remember, Harry has spent years being told he was "broken", that something was wrong with him. That type of thinking is hard to shake. Even being able to trust adults was entirely new to him.

Especially when he’s now being told that talking to snakes is a trait of Salazar Slytherin and that hearing disembodied voices isn’t a good sign. In the book I believe he also already has Riddle’s diary at this point, so he has an object he knows he shouldn’t have as well.

@@O_Ciel_Phant0mhive Also, he was hearing voices that nobody else could hear. Harry does not want the judgment of other people thinking that he is potentially crazy. Especially when he couldn't prove where the voice was coming from.

If it didn't remind me of my abusive, narcissistic mother, it would be funny.
So Jason Isaac originally auditioned for Gildiroy Lockhart, but didn't get the role. So they asked him to read for Lucious Malfoy, he was so salty about not getting cast as the character he wanted that he in turn proved he was perfect for the role he got. He now loves his role and always talks fondly of the time he spent on the movies.
He was also really proud of his improved "kicking Dobby" at the end. He kicked nothing and the director thought he might have slipped and called a cut to make sure he was alright and he explained "No that was on purpose, I was kicking Dobby." People should be proud when they just knock villain roles out of the park. Tom Felton also did an outstanding job being insufferable as Draco (I would say more but that would stray into big spoilers).

And it seems like Lucius' actor did a lot of improvisation too. For exemple in Dumbledore's office, the line to Harry is said to be an improvisation and Harry's answer too and the kick to Dobby when he's leaving Dumbledore's office is an addition from him. They went with it when adding CGI.
Just to add: at the end when Harry said: 'Don't worry, I will be' to Lucius.. Daniel just made that up, it's not on the script. 😁
Also at the end when Hagrid was getting the standing ovation, its not really an improved moment but a slight mistake, I think it was Crabbe who starts to stand up at that moment and Malfoy grabs him to keep him from standing. That wasnt in the script, Crabbe made a mistake but the director liked it and decided to keep it in.
I love that fact, because it shows how good Tom Felton is, as an actor. Also because it's just so brilliant and perfectly timed.
I think the films were really designed to grow with kids. The later you get into the films, the harder lessons they're learning.

Muggles’ eyes tend to glaze over and not really notice magic. The book touches on it a bit, saying that their minds ignore things they can’t make sense of.
I thought that there were also charms on some spots, like platform 9 3/4, that would cause muggles to look away at just the right time and they just wouldn't see anything strange or magical happening.
@@ronweber1402 I could be wrong but I think they mention in the books that there are always wizards on the platform, so if a muggle does notice, they end up erasing that memory.

Being muggle born doesn't make you a non 'magician'.
Hermione is my favorite and she's amazing, but the movies overplay her skills/knowledge. In the books, Ron usually explains social/cultural Wizarding World facts that Harry and Hermione wouldn't have a way of knowing (like Hermione doesn't know what a mudblood is in the books and doesn't know hearing voices isn't normal in the WW). Ron is also more likely to keep his head in dangerous situation while Hermione is more prone to panic. Many of his best lines and actions are given to Hermione.
Ron would be a better wizard if he had a wand that chose him, but his is actually a hand-me-down. But he's reasonably good anyway.
The movies don't mention that Salazar Slytherin felt muggle-borns were a threat because the school was founded far away from muggles due to their persecution of wizards (burning them at the stake). He certainly went overboard, but his actions were rooted in a desire to protect the magical community.

@@S_047 Ron is still a g in the movies but no where near where he should be compared to the books. Unfortunately movie followed stereotypes. Brave main character, the smart know it all friend and then the loyal but comedic friend. When in the books Ron was a lot more than that, as the previous guy said, Ron was also well versed in wizarding culture and was also calm and intelligent.
Not only is Ron’s wand a hand-me-down but it has a unicorn hair core known for loosing power over time and not working well for anyone but the original owner so he was screwed over pretty hard for the first couple years at Hogwarts.
Honestly, the same could be said about GInny as well. One of my favorite lines in the Chamber of Secrets book is when they're on the train home and Ron asks her what she had seen Percy doing that made him cut her off when she tried telling him (Ron) and Harry the morning before she went into the Chamber that she was sure she was the one who had been petrifying people. Ginny snickers and tells them that she caught Percy and his girlfriend (Ravenclaw Prefect Penelope Clearwater) snogging (making out) in an empty classroom. Ginny in the books has such a dynamic personality that it's a shame what the movies did in watering down her character.

It’s the same thing as in the first movie, they let you think the one thing, and then the plottwist comes.
Not every kids movie is the same, that’s why I like Harry Potter that much!

Also, Hagrid blindly loves all creatures terrifying, so much so that he couldn’t imagine any of them hurting anyone. It’s a theme throughout the books of Hagrid introducing dangerous creatures to the students and him thinking they’re “cute” while everyone else is terrified. You get a glimpse of that when he has the dragon in the first movie and says, “Bless him, he knows his mummy!” This is the excerpt from the book right after Ron/Harry escape the spiders:
"Follow the spiders," said Ron weakly, wiping his mouth on his sleeve. “I’ll never forgive Hagrid. Were lucky to be alive.”
"I bet he thought Aragog wouldn't hurt friends of his,”
said Harry.
"That's exactly Hagrid's problem!" said Ron, thumping the wall
of the cabin. "He always thinks monsters aren't as bad as they're made out, and look where it’s gotten him! A cell in Azkaban!”

I read the Harry Potter series three times already but everyone keeps putting notes in that I completely forget I'm going to have to go a fourth time around

The trouble is Hagrid is a half giant, so he's stronger, bigger and tougher than anyone else, but he forgets this fact and naturally assumes where something would be 'cute' and 'non threatening' to HIM, it would be that same to other people.

About trusting the teachers. Think about this: How was Harry experience with adults? The Dursleys. He grew up in a very abusive home, being mistreated every single day by the adults that was suppose to take care of him. In my opinion, it just make sense that he is not very trustful about adults.
When McGonagall say she'll be sending letters to their families, I often wondered about the reaction from the Dursleys. How would they even contact Hogwarts back? I only thought about that in some detail because movie reactions allow one to contemplate a scene without getting carried away by the ongoing film.
@@terrylandess6072 Something interesting I just put together watching this reaction is that at the end of the first movie, Hagrid tells Harry to threaten Dudley with a pair of pig ears and Harry says "But we're not allowed to do magic outside of school" and Hagrid says "But your cousin doesn't know that" which I think would imply that Mr. and Mrs. Dursley probably don't either. Then in this movie Professor McGonagall says she's going to write their families and I imagine she probably mentions in the letter that he broke the rule of performing magic outside of school which would let them know that's a rule and that he's just getting a warning this time. And that ties in with a line Mr. Dursley says to Harry in the next one as Harry is coming down the stairs near the beginning of the movie (trying to be super vague so there's no spoilers) so I thought that was a cool little detail that seemed to carry through.
Harry says the Dursleys will be happy he's getting detention.
@@crystalrose_pa I'm pretty sure that in the book, Harry receives a letter with a warning from the Ministry of Magic about the spell Dobby cast, and Vernon reads the letter before handing it to Harry. He's furious that Harry's threatened them with magic when he's not really allowed, so that's how they know.

I'm not gonna lie....when I first saw the basilisk in this movie, I had the same reaction Ron had with Aragog.
FUN FACT: The reason Ron is so fearful of spiders is explained in the book. When Ron was a toddler, Fred and George turned his teddy bear into a spider.
Eh, it isn't really something that needs explaining. Arachnophobia is a thing many people suffer from and it is reasonable to assume wizards would be included in "a lot of people." Certainly doesn't help living in a world where you know some spiders can grow to the size of people and larger.

@@greyscalesx phobias are intense, and irrational fears or aversions to specific situations/objects/animals etc. No phobias are common in terms of numbers but out of the spectrum of phobias, Arachnophobia IS a pretty common one for people to suffer from. I agree though that not everyone who considers themselves to have Arachnophobia actually does have it….many (like me) just have a normal fear of spiders
The older I get, the more I love how offended for Hermione Hagrid gets. Just the way he says "He did not!" you can tell how much he cares for his little friends.
Before I got to the end of The Deathly Hallows, I heard an idea that Harry would name a daughter “Ruby” because of Rubeus Hagrid. I know it doesn’t happen, but I think it’s an adorable idea

Malfoy saying, "I didn't know you could read," to Harry/Goyle was a well placed improvisation. One of my favorite lines in this whole movie though!
Another great improv was at the end of the movie. Jason Isaacs improved the line about Harry always being around "to save the day." To which Dan replied with his own improvised, "Don't worry. I will be."

@@kavyapant5506 Yeah it is in an interview/behind the scenes bit with him where he talks about that moment specifically.
Something I really enjoy is seeing The Oak going from "yeah the first movie kinda sucked tbh" to full-blown Harry Potter fan after the final movie. I know this because I've seen some of their more recent reacts that took place after their Harry Potter marathon, and can see he has a Gryffindor scarf hung over his chair and other Harry Potter related merchandise scattered across his end of the table.
I love being able to see the transformation happen before my very eyes lol

There is a pretty good theory on why Salazar built the chamber in the first place, since it doesn't make much sense if he did all that work just to potentially kill a couple of students in a few hundred years. The clue is in the name "secrets" and that he put an animal (snake) that only he could talk with and had a lifespan of many hundreds of years. The theory is that he told the basilisk many of his secrets (forbidden magic etc.) in the hopes that an heir (someone else who can speak parseltongue) will find it and be able to learn his secrets from the snake. If Voldie learnt any of these secrets from the basilisk is unsaid but it could explain how he was able to become so powerful and knew about many forbidden magics, but the basilisk wasn't intended to ever leave its chamber.
There is also: look Salazar may have been an elitist prick but he was a founder of the school just like the other 3. Pretty sure if he was such a dick that he wanted to kill non-purebloods the other three would have picked up on it and not made the school with him in the fist place. Parseltongue is incredibly rare so your theory is probably pretty close to the truth of why the camber exists in the first place.

But I kinda feel like he will have the same opinion about every movies for they are not that great compared to the books...and even the books are not amazing unless you've grown up with them. lord of the rings on the other hand is a book and movie that will go through the ages much better.

Fun fact: Richard Harris (Dumbledore's actor) actually thought Fawkes the Phoenix was a real bird and no one ever told him the truth, which is that Fawkes was an animatronic puppet (they even had the puppet react to Richard to make it even more real to him)
Oher puppets were Aragog (who was based off a wolf spider, only bigger) and the basilisk (which was mostly CGI but the close up shots of Harry swinging his sword on top statue, the basilisk head there was completely animatronic)
You'll be amazed at how many of the mythical creatures through out these films have puppets (even the ones that were mostly CGI had some form of physical representation, so the actors had something to react to)
I just hoped Richard Harris wouldve lived long enough for all the movies. Perfect fit and a lovely person at heart
I was thinking the same thing about fawkes when they were reacting to the scene. So funny he thought it was real.
They had a troll for the first movie, too, but because it was too big for the doors they only used the legs and put someone in a green suit in it to make the kids react to someone. One troll leg is seen in the 5th movie in the house of the order of phoenix, used as an umbrella-holder
I love the scene where Malfoy first calls Hermione a mudblood. What a perfect way to introduce kids to the disgusting (but important) ideas of bigotry and discrimination.
Hermione explains how hurtful it is, but before the kids in the audience can get too deep into their feelings BOOM! Ron Weasley burps a slug up and the kiddos can laugh and scream EEEWWWWW instead to break up the heaviness.
Then Hagrid at the end grabs Hermione's hand and says the only thing anyone should take away from a situation like that... "Don't you think on it for one minute!"

@@pasaniusventris4113 honestly, I preferred the way movie portrayed it. By this time they're at their second year, which means that Hermione had probably heard the term before, even discussed it with other students with muggle families or half blood families and learnt its negative connotation. That's why she knew. It's more realistic. Kids can be mean too, even within the magical community.
Just listening to The Oak's opinion at the beginning and thinking to myself, "You're going to get sucked in, mate"...Can't wait to see it 🙂

That made me smile too....especially when he said that children's movies were so obvious. I had to smile and think "Just wait". I have to admit that I like Oak's reactions the best because I know that he will enjoy it by the last movie but he's honest that it's not his thing right now. This is one of my favorite reactor groups to Harry Potter. Also love Veggie Gamer.

Rewatching these reactions from the beginning and hearing oak saying he wouldn't be watching these again by himself and knowing now how much of a potterhead he became in the end puts a smile on my face
Fun Fact about the Skele-Grow potion Harry drinks to re grow his bones. An ancestor of Harry’s actually invented that potion hence why Harry is well off with money in his vault
That and sleek-easy’s hair potion.
It was his grandfather, Fleamont Potter, and Harry himself was named after Fleamont's father Henry, nicknamed Harry, who was a popular member of the Wizengamot that advocated for helping muggles during World War II which led to the Potter family being excluded from the Sacred 28 list of pureblood families.
In the books, entering into the 9 & 3/4 barrier was done a little more covertly. They mention that muggles don’t see much, which I think means that as people we often explain away things that don’t make sense. Like if you saw someone disappear into a solid wall, you might think it was a trick of the light or maybe you imagined it. Even Harry and the Dursleys in the first book explain away a lot of the magical things he does before he knows he can do magic. He was once running from bullies and somehow ended up on top of the school roof, not realizing how he got there. His explanation to himself was that “the wind must have caught him mid-jump”. 😂 There was another time when aunt Petunia was trying to put one of Dudley’s huge sweaters on Harry and the harder she pushed it down on top of his head, it got smaller and smaller until it could have fit a hand puppet. Aunt Petunia then says it must have shrunk in the wash.
Right. Also, if I remember correctly, in Book 1, Harry tries to observe other wizard-suspicious individuals entering platform 9 3/4, but at the last minute, something always keeps obstructing his vision. A couple of tourists walk through in front of him, or something.
I guess it's possible that there is some kind of security enchantment placed on the barrier, which makes sure people who do not know its secret keep looking away at the last moment.
And if muggles where to ever get close enough to see Hogwarts it would look like ruins or they would suddenly remember that they have an appointment or something of that nature

"Follow the spiders" in the books, it was always pointed out that Hagrid's pets are dangerous. But he never sees them that way. Look at Fluffy, his dragon he named Norbert and now Aragog. And many more 😉😉😉. He never saw his pets as dangerous. He believes that they will never hurt other people because they never hurt him. He's one of the most endearing characters because of this.
You recognized Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy. The actor playing Lockhart is also a well-known British actor & director, Kenneth Branagh. He’s done everything from Shakespeare to action. He directed Thor and won an Oscar for screenwriting Belfast. Too many other things to list… including a personal life that landed him in the tabloids now and then.

It was hard for me at first to grasp that was him.as the bad guy in Wild Wild West with will smith and directed the first Thor movie

The spider eating hagrid’s friends thing isn’t really a character inconsistency moreso as it’s just a factor of it being sloppily translated from the books to the film. In the books, it is STRONGLY implied that Hagrid is a bit naive when it comes to creatures. That is, he believes that pretty much all creatures are pure and innocent when they’re very clearly not.
Animals tend to respect Hagrid, but it’s mostly out of submission / intimidation than of actual respect. Remember that Hargrid is a giant so it’s a bit intimidating for the animals when they see him, so they submit to Hagrid out of fear which Hagrid misinterprets as them “being his friend”
The spiders respect Hagrid though.

He is naturally good with animals...and a bit naive. Animals don't fear him which is what allows them to trust him and he earns their respect. He also knows how to deal with aggressive behavior in animals. It isn't fear but trust that bonds Hagrid with animals.
I mean in this specific instance he raised Aragog from hatchling all the way to this point and even returned to taking care of him after he was let out of Azkaban (the first time) instead of abandoning him. it makes sense that Hagrid would think Aragog wouldn't harm them after they told him that he sent them. Aragog is just kind of a dick as it happens. He even says Hagrid has never sent people to him before so it isn't like he should be thinking Hagrid sent him people for the purposes of eating.

But perhaps, but you’re applying humanistic attributes to a creature that’s completely alien to ours. We love our pets because we see ourselves in them. We can safely assume that the more domesticated animals more than probably share the same sentiments towards us……but that’s because they are…..well, domesticated. Arragog is likely not even legal to own as a pet and certainly not considered “domesticated”. Therefore, we must abandon all human reasoning and consider the reality that arrogag is an arachnid and will ultimately behave as such.
The sad reality with Arachnids is that they don’t have any concept of loyalty or familiarity to them. Indeed, the very concept of “family” and “friendship” is completely foreign to them. A spider’s first meal is literally their own mother. It’s therefore completely reasonable to conclude that Aragog will absolutely sacrifice Harry and Ron despite Hagrid’s intentions.
The question isn’t “Why did Aragog try to sacrifice Ron and Harry”. It’s “Why didn’t Aragog try to sacrifice Hagrid in the first place?”
Fun fact: Jason Isaac's (Lucius Malfoy) sarcastic "let us hope that Mr Potter will always be around to save the day" line and Harry's sassy "don't worry, I will be" were both improvised!
The "I didn't know you could read" was ad-libbed when Felton forgot the scripted line. The director liked it and kept it instead of reshooting.
I would love to know what Malfoy was supposed to say, though. The ad-lib seems perfect for the character.

All of the skeletons were rats skeletons. The first two were directed by Chris Columbus who also directed home alone that’s why they have a kiddish feeling to them. The next movie has a different director and a new Dumbldore because the actor passed away, so they have a different actor for the rest of the movies.
When the books came out, most bookstores had midnight parties where they had live owls, all kinds of food, and everyone dressed up and tons of food. This happened when every book came out. With the movies, people lined up for hours and we’re also dressed up. We had all the candies from the movies and you could go online and answer questions to be sorted. You also got your own wand from Ollivanders. It was an epic time! All the kids and many adults got back into reading. These books single handily got children loving to read again!
Hagrid has a blind spot when it comes to what he considers "fascinating" creatures. He doesn't understand that just because these creatures like him it doesn't mean they won't harm someone else.
So glad the Oak has the feeling that how many things I'm missing from the books because yes, A LOT. And actually the farther you go down into the series the more you will miss because the books just get heavier and heavier. Well the movies are quite fun and entertaining by their own rights, much better than most fantasy movies(cuz they tend to go terribly wrong), but I guess most people will probably agree that books are more recommended.

The books are way more immersive and detailed- plus you use your imagination a lot more and then you get excited to see how events/characters will then look on the screen compared to your expectations!!! Definitely always books 1st. I am ofc speaking purely from my perspective as I'd read the the 1st 4 books by the time the 1st movie was released. Just my opinion!!
A thing to note is that the movies do tend to over sell hermione's actions and bravery and undersell Ron's like they're both pretty equal partners to Harry, Hermoine just happens to have more knowledge but they give her way more spells than she actually has in the books

The Oak mentioned something about being a Visual person, and asking about what he's missing in the movies. The small bit of detail that I love about these movies is that the warner bros signs when starting each movie gets darker and darker and more decrepit as the movies progress, while each movie seems to get dark in its story telling as well. I always loved that small bit they added to it.

On adults and trust...
Harry has grown up with adults either abusing him or letting him down. For years, he's learned to survive by becoming as invisible as he can. Adults do not help him. And now, he's in a different world. There might be people here he can trust (there are). But how does he come to terms with that change in such a short period of time? What's worse - events give Harry cause to question himself (re: parseltongue). So not only does he have to overcome a learned behavior in trusting adults, he's worrying that he might alienate people who have opened a new world to him.
On trusting Hagrid...
Hagrid himself is a monster. Or at least, some view him as one. If you watch how assholes treat him and some of the backstory we've glimpsed over the past few movies, we learn that people misjudge him on his heritage. Hangrid also has a love for animals. Combine that love with a willingness to overlook the dangerous side of things due to his own experience... and well... Hagrid tends to be very trusting of creatures that one might not otherwise trust. Or at least, Hagrid isn't the best judge of dangers magical creatures present.
Hagrid was right - the spiders gave the boys very important information. But Hagrid... being Hagrid... badly misjudged the peril involved. It's just how he is.
On kid stories...
Our culture does a disservice trying to sanitize everything we deem for kids. Not that we shouldn't have different kinds of stories. But sometimes, uncomfortable elements can be part of kids stories. Just as they always have been. If you look at classic tales from origional sources, you'll find either some really disturbing subjects... or history. Sometimes its elements that give kids a way of dealing with a world they're growing up in. And sometimes there are things that a kid just doesn't pick up on until later when they've come to understand or realize elements they've experienced growing up. Ever watch Bugs Bunny as a kid and then as an adult and wowed at some of the jokes that went over your head? Darkness is out there in the world and a stories like Harry Potter presents can provide ways of dealing with it.
On book depth...
The first couple of movies were fairly complete as the books were shorter. But each successive book get thicker. Even if there wasn't that whole creative interpretation and medium translation thing going on... the movies simply have to cut material.

Aye, guys! This is a perfect series for you fellas to react to. As everyone’s stated, it does get better. Having Oak as the antagonist makes it all so much sweeter. All the more enjoyable, watching him become invested. Now Oak, I’m a fellow adult & adore the films & books. The books created a global effect, turning kids who never read into voracious readers, so, there’s that. Also, you mention how dark some of this is for kids, but remember Grimm’s Fairy Tales? Pretty dark. I don’t believe that I’m giving any spoilers by saying that the next movie is the beginning of where the darkness & depth is introduced. It’s directed by Alfonso Cuaron, an amazing director, so it’s not an accident that this one is a favorite to many.

I like how Oak "Nah, those childish movies, I`m not impressed, I`m cool big adult". And than he total in it, smiles and screams, and obviously have fun while watching 😁
So in muggle world, they don't know anything about magic existing. When wizards go through magic entrances built into the muggle world, there's charms and spells to deter muggles from either accidentally using them as well or seeing them being used. In the books, wizards explain that muggles don't really pay attention to anything around them, especially magic, so it's like they're invisible to muggles when doing magical things.
I hear this question a lot from everyone: "Why didn't they trust adults?" but I think it's important that you remember throughout the series that though everything is magical and sort of unreal, these are still kids, you know? And then ask yourselves how and what where you thinking when you were their age? I bet you didn't tell adults anything ;D most of us being kids were afraid of being punished or misunderstood if we wanted help from our parents or teachers so we didn't say anything. Some of us didn't tell adults things only because of our bringing, because we didn't know better or didn't have someone to be a father figure to us. Or sometimes it was just a little bit more interesting to have the feeling of a secret adventure that you're going on. So I think it's very normal and very humane that none of these children said anything about what's going on. And I think in some kind of way it was a writer's way of telling that sometimes you need to put your trust in elders if you want to avoid danger. Though most of the kids just don't and that's just how the kids are.
Just as an lore point house elves are not bound by the same magical restraints as wizards. They can do things wizards can't and by pass restrictions that would stump wizards as strong as Dumbledore. It's kind of like birds vs people. Birds can travel where people can't simply because they can do things people can't.
That's how dobby made it in to the dursley home.
It's actually a big plot point in layer books.
Dumbledore can go to the dursley home as well though. Anyone who can apparate but Voldemort can go there. They can do it by floo powder as well, as the weasleys do in the book.
An important thing to remember about Harry not telling the adults anything is that he is abused and telling adults things in the past has, at best, been ignored or gotten him into unjust punishments. So, while most of the adults at Howarts are safe to tell things to, he isn't just going to come right out and say it because it's so deeply engrained to mistrust adults.
I love rewatching these reactions. I love how Appleton Oak goes from hating his life being forced to watch Harry Potter to being the biggest Harry Potter fan on the panel. Love you guys.

I started watching your Harry Potter reactions starting from the Prisoner of Azkaban, and going back and seeing the Oak's reactions to the first movies is hilarious knowing that he'll become Harry Potter's biggest fan, even going home and watching fan theories by the end. Really enjoying these reactions.
I'm loving watching three big dudes react to this franchise. I was late myself on the HP train, but loved the books/movies as soon as I began my reading/watching journey. As you'll notice, the CGI noticeably improves as more movies are made. Also, with each passing film, the story will get darker and more grown up naturally as the kids age and conflicts become more serious. There are very few movie franchises where I can see myself enjoying SO many movies outside of the MCU, but this was a wonderfully put together franchise.
The movies get soooooooo much better as they go on. In production value, acting, storytelling, direction.
The movies really grow with the main actors.
I've always had this last in my list of HP movies. 3 has always been first place so I cannot wait for that!
Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite as well. It's so tightly written and so well-directed.

@@BaddMedicine The brave things Hermoine was shown to have done in Prisoner of Azkaban, were actually done by Ron in the book. And that will be theme for the rest of the movie series. Movies took Ron's work in the Books and gave it to Hermoine in the movies, downplaying Ron and boosting Hermoine to be the lead hero going forward.
I was a huge fan of the books. But Order of the Phoenix bored me with the exception of the climax. The movie cut out most of the boring parts and the story flowed better, in my opinion. However, that's the only Potter movie I thought was better than the book.
My favourite part of the book never made it on-screen. Really loved the ghost party that Near-Headless Nick invited Harry to. Basially, Nick wanted to impress a hunting group of ghosts who were all in a little club that required you to be headless. Since Nicks decapitation was messed up, he isnt fully headless as a ghost and therefore cant join. The whole part was just Harry having to sit around these ghosts surrounded by rotten food. Ghosts prefer rotten food because the scent is strong enough that they can almost smell it. After a while Harry rlly regretted his choice to go there instead of to the Halloween feast in the great hall.

This one is my personal favourite, cause its the last time we see whole cast wear weird Wizard clothes and proper Hogwarts student attire. Especially the feel of the castle in this one is the strongest for me, as later movies either use more open areas or just don't happen at Hogwarts as much as they used to. Which I mean is fine, but later movies don't give me the same vibe books did.
There has been always something magical for me about all the theatrics of the first two movies. And the iconic soundtrack, than unfortunately changes and evolves in later parts. I miss those quirky and fun notes and melodies tbh.
I actually never really understood why most people picked the third one as their favourite. But then again I also don't understand the love people gave to Sirius as character. But maybe that's just their nostalgia and different taste for esthetics, I guess? Or it is just my purism about proper adaptations coming out. I feel like later movies got gradually americanised or more Hollywood like. The atmosphere, costumes, locations - everything became more modernised and "muggle"ised. Missing the spark, smoke and weirdness of original parts.
In the books the story takes place in the 90s (1rs two movies kind of respect that esthetic) but in the movies they wear 2000s clothes by the last 5 or 6 movies obviously to attract more audience I guess. But that always bothered me. They kind of killed the spark as you said.
I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan ever since the first books came out but I understand if some people don't really like it 🙂. But watching you guys react while watching it sure is a lot of fun! 😁

Effects are waaaaay better. I love the first 2 cause it's the introduction to the characters, some plot development which will make sense in the future. "do the muggles notice that?"
There's a few throwaway comments in the books like "oh they never notice anything (that doesn't fit into their world-view)/(because they're dumb)" and there are a few spells that are mentioned like the "notice-me-not" spell - the entry to the "leaky cauldron" for example is clearly and easy to see for wizards and witches, but muggles just..never seem to notice it.
It's also always incredibly busy at major London stations and people tend to very much mind their own business - I'll let you deduce from that what you will :)

In the next movie there is a pretty big thing that muggles just don't notice lol. It comes up far more frequently as the series progresses. The answer is obvious: magic. The car's "invisibility booster" is one such thing that prevents muggles from noticing blatant magic. Many magical creatures inherently have properties that make them difficult for a muggle to notice (unless they are looking for them).
As the saying goes "People see what they expect to see" so people that don't expect to see magic, don't, unless it directly effects them forcing them to notice.
Very fair assessments from the guys. It's very young adult in the audience age range, even in the books. It does a pretty good job talking about life lessons, but they don't hit everyone in exact relatability. For me, I like the world and the idea of the magics of this universe over the actual characters and their very specific story. Still very excited to see you go through the journey as I do believe one does well to watch these movies with an open mind at least once.

I asked my mom if she ever saw the HP movies in theaters, cause she is a 39 y/o woman and absolutely obsessed with the series, she said, "No, but I remember walking out of a big super mall that was connected to a theater and seeing a crowd of people dressed in yellow and red by the entrance of the theater."
The basilisk is one of my favorite movie monsters. That scene where he has Harry cornered in the drain is still terrifying to this day. Excellent use of practical effects there. CGI would not have had the same weight
Also, about Harry not trusting the teachers, please remember we was raised by the Dursley’s with a lot of abuse. Trusting adults is extremely hard for Harry and will take some time.. He is an orphan used to surviving on his one.

In the book the Riddle Diary was handled over a longer period of time. Harry found out who it belonged to and Ron recognized the name because he had to clean the trophy room for detention and saw that fifty years before Riddle had received an award. So they realized he was at the school when the chamber was opened before, so that is why Harry ended up asking him about the Chamber. In the movie it was just a bit too convenient that Harry just straight up asked about the Chamber with little hope it would work out, the extended cut of the movie included the trophy room conversation. Actually gotten to where I only watch the extended now because it covers so many little plot holes that shouldn't have been in the final version. it gets worse as the books get longer and the movies have to stay the same length, it's why the last movie is split into 2 movies.
They also cut out a lot more of the mystery stuff in the movie, like in the book Percy and Ginny had been acting strangely through the whole book. Turned out that Percy just had a secret girlfriend at the school, Ginny caught them in the act and Percy was just trying to get her to keep it secret, which led to some suspicious behavior. His gf was the girl that was with Hermione when she got petrified. and this also led to some more behavior from Percy that made it look like he was the one opening the chamber.
Can't wait to see what your thoughts will be after the Prizoner of Azkaban. I bet until you finish this movie journey, you'll see the whole series with a different eye. The deep life meanings these stories give us, are precious, no matter if you're a kid or an adult.
You're so lucky to be able to experience this with fresh eyes. I wish I could erase my memory just to rewatch for the first time again. Each film gets better, darker, funnier, more detailed, more complex and entertaining.

One of my favourite things in the series, which you see from the beginning, is that our three heroes are not perfect. Harry doesn't ask for help, Ron can be insensitive, and Hermione can be a know it all. It makes them much more relatable!

The first two books are quite short. The second film adapts nearly the entire book, and it's the longest of all 8 films for it. Book 3 is longer, but it's only really with book 4 do they suddenly become 400+ page behemoths. Those are when the films really start to lose a *lot* in their adaptations.
I was so excited watching your reactions to this! It gets darker as they go in plot, characters and directing styles. I think that gradual change is what really pulls me to the movies. You’ll notice not only does the plot get darker but the environment gets more gloomy as the movies go by. The books are much more detailed with a bunch of interesting characters we don’t get to see in the movies & backstories we dont get to hear.

Awesome reaction! I can’t wait to be able to watch full reactions once my finances are situated. When it comes to whether the adults (like Dumbledore) knowing about what’s going on, it’ll all make sense at the end. Once you’ve completed the series, a lot of “missing” plot holes can be explained and it’ll click. It’s the best realizations, I promise. Also as a child who can relate to Harry as far as home life (although his was way more calm than mine), we learn to handle things on our own. We become so used to being on our own, learning on our own, everything on our own basically so it can be hard to trust an adult for help. He at least has his friends.

This book was my introduction to the harry potter series. I was in second grade.
I was never allowed to watch Harry Potter when I was younger because of my previous religion. Anything with wizardry was strictly forbidden, but when the movies went viral on TikTok during quarantine I thought i would give them a watch. I got obsessed!! Proud Gryffindor right here!!
It keeps getting said "kids movie," but the books were renowned by all ages. It was the first series of books that was loved by everyone. When the first book came out, I was a flooring installer. I came across many adults addicted to it. The most memorable was an elderly couple in their late 70s sitting at the kitchen table reading their own copy the whole day I was there. The books were in the Independent Reader section - so early teens.

What made Harry Potter books and movies special is that most of us grew up with the characters. When we started reading the first book we were children (8 years old in my case) and when the books continued we began to grow along with the characters in the books. As the movies/books progress, everything gets darker because the characters begin to understand the depth and darkness that surrounds the villain of the story. The darkness can be seen from the third film but it is definitely installed when death appears as an element for the first time in The Goblet Of Fire. A kind of Easter Egg, the dark progress of the films can be seen right at the beginning. The production company logo will gradually turn black . I love your reactions, hi from Spain guys 😊
Here’s how I interpreted it: at this point in his life, Harry has a deep mistrust in adults in general because of the Dursleys. I don’t think Harry trusts any of the teachers, especially Snape because of how badly snape treats him, which was a lot worse in the books than the movies. Chamber of secrets isn’t my favorite movie of the series but I think y’all will enjoy #3.
I remember being frustrated by Harry not telling people things right away, but it's also key to remember that he's grown up in an emotionally and physically abusive home and been gaslighted about how he was treated. He was also told he was strange, there was something wrong with him, and that basically everything he did was wrong. That instills thought patterns and behaviors that are very difficult to shake. The people he would need to tell are authority figures who have, for the large majority, been negative people in his life until this point.
Harry Potter was definitely a teen series but for those of us that read it in our teens we absolutely loved it and still love it in adulthood
I appreciate how, despite the oak not really “getting it”, he catches onto all of the subtle dark aspects of the early movies.
I have to say I'm impressed that when Harry and Ron are blocked out fromt Platform 9 3/4 that Mason's immediate thought was "I bet it was Dobby". I never even considered that when I first saw the film. Smart man.
Always love the reactions! Just a heads up, each movie is each year at Hogwarts and are one summer apart, so here they are 12 years old and in the next movie they'll be 13. Also, Muggles dont know about the wizarding world unless their child gets invited into a wizarding school (like Hermione's parents). And at the gateway pillar that they have to run into, I believe there is some magic that covers them doing that.
in the books muggles are able to see them, but they have to make themselves look inconspicuous and blend in with the crowd, very few muggles know about wizards (harry's aunt and uncle for example) and if the general public was aware there could very well be a war for power

Muggles (Non-magic folk) don't really notice magical stuff happening in their presence because they don't expect it. They only notice if they focus hard enough. At least that's what I remember from the books. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The second book/movie is generally the least favorite of the series so if you liked this I think you will really get excited with the next ones.. This one has more world building and character building that will be important for the next ones. Also there are usually aurors (enforcers for the ministry of magic) at 9 3/4 to make sure things go smoothly, doing the “Obliviate” spell on muggles when they do see something.. I think the oak will loose is muggle ways in the 4th movie 😂 That’s my prediction
