  • Time to embark on the Harry Potter journey and WOW Prisoner of Azkaban was wild!!!
Badd Medicine here and its Harry Potter reaction time! Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their third year of study, where they delve into the mystery surrounding an escaped prisoner who poses a dangerous threat to the young wizard. What a movie this one was for Harry Potter and crew! Definitely a step up from the first two movies. The tone in this one is a game changer for us. Sirius Black was a very interesting character. Gary Oldman was great! The logo's of WB are also fun to watch as they keep getting darker. Folks, we are hooked and ready for more! LET'S GO POTTER!!!!

In the books practically every divination prediction made comes true.
'One of the class will leave us forever.' -> Hermione drops Divination.
Harry pretends he sees a Hippogriff flying away in the crystal ball and not with its head cut off as Trewlawney would expect -> Harry & Hermione save Buckbeak.
At Christmas Trewlawney is scared to join 12 people at the table 'for when 13 dine, the rise to rise is the first to die'. But Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew already made 13 and Dumbledore rose to greet Trewlawney -> Out of the 13 Dumbledore dies first.

That's why I sometimes love the changes they add to the movies. Like it was Harry who discovered Peter in Marauder's map and told Lupin about it instead of Lupin finding about it himself. As it would get easier to explain to Harry the situation as Harry himself has seen the dot labelled Peter Pettegrew roaming the halls of Hogward's. Something they don't really tell you in the movies is that Remus absolutely was NOT helping Sirius into the castle. He 100% believed that he was guilty and had betrayed the Potters. On the evening of Buckbeak's execution, professor Lupin was watching the map because he was certain that Harry, Ron, and Hermione would sneak out to visit Hagrid before the execution and he wanted to make sure they were safe. He saw 3 dots labeled for Harry, Ron, and Hermione enter Hagrid's hut, then about 15 minutes later, saw them exit, accompanied by a fourth dot labeled Peter Pettigrew, because Ron now had Scabbers. He couldn't believe his eyes, he thought "the map must have been malfunctioning". But then he saw another dot Labeled Sirius black charge towards the group of four and drag away the dots labeled Ronald Weasley and Peter Pettigrew, so he rushed out to the Shrieking shack. What he saw on the map, and a quick exchange of words with Sirius, confirmed to him that Sirius was innocent after all, and that he had been set up.

They never properly explain this in the movies:
Remus became a werewolf when he was a kid. Attacked by other werewolf - Fernir Greyback. Dumbledore decided to give him a chance and allowed him to study at Hogwarts. He made Woomping Willow to protect the entrance to The Shriecking Shack where Lupin would hide during his transformations (because of the noise he would make then, people started believing that the shack in hounted).
The Marauders' were a group made of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Petiegrew and James Potter. Their strong friendship began in their first year at Hogwarts. Sirius and James met on the train and had been inseparable ever since and the two met Remus and Peter afterwards. After couple years they realised what Lupin is. They decided that they want to help him during his transformations by becoming animagi and spending them with him. By their fifth year, all had secretly become unregistered Animagi. James Potter's Animagus form was a shining red stag (Prongs), Sirius Black's was a shaggy black dog (Padfoot), and Peter Pettigrew's was a fat grey rat (Wormtail).

It might not be necessary for this movie, but it is sort of important for later. For example, in the Order of the Phoenix movie, Harry says to Snape "He has Padfoot at the place where it's hidden", which ends up being the reason that the Order can come and help them. But if you didn't read the books, that line makes no sense.
Also, knowing that the Marauder's Map was made by them would have given a little bit more weight and explained in this movie why Lupin was so convinced that the map wasn't lying about Peter Pettigrew: because both of them were involved in it's making.

Some details are not enough explained in the movie and are in the book - the Marauder Map was actually made by Lupin, Sirius Black, James Potter (Harry's father) and Peter Pettigrew.
Their nicknames were Moony (Lupin, oc), Wormtail (Pettigrew), Padfoot (Sirius), and Prongs (James) because the group needed to be able to stay with Lupin when he transformed, so they all teched themselves to turn into animals.
That's why the patronus of Harry takes the form of a deer, his father could transform in one.

@@BaddMedicine She's absolutely right. Sirius, James and Peter wanted to keep Lupin company during his transformations. It's very much elaborated upon in the book that James and Sirius were as close as two boys can be. Sirius Black comes from one of the most ancient pureblood families that hates muggle borns. But Sirius was different and got sorted into Gryffindor, and his family despised him for it. So the Potter family took Sirius in to live with them, and that's where Sirius lived during the summer breaks away from school. So, Harry and Sirius having this new relationship is EXTREMELY important for Harry, because Sirius wasn't just a friend of his dad. The man is as close to blood to Harry as one can get, without being blood.

Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban after seeing Scabbers (Peter Pettigrew) in a Daily Prophet article of the paper Cornelius Fudge gave him in late July 1993, recognising him as his traitorous former friend. By 31 July, Black took advantage of his extreme weight loss to slip through his cell door in his Animagus dog form (which was unregistered, thus the Ministry did not take preparations against) while the Dementors were bringing in his food and swam across the North Sea to find Pettigrew. Black was able to maintain his sanity due to his knowledge of his innocence, a non-happy thought that the Dementors could not take. It was only this that allowed him to maintain his powers to transform, and what made the escape possible.

At one point when practicing the patronus with lupin Harry thought this to himself:
“Any second now, he might hear his mother again… but he shouldn’t think that, or he would hear her again, and he didn’t want to… or did he?”
Also in the book he heard both of his parents last words:
Lily’s - “‘Not Harry! Not Harry! Please- I’ll do anything-‘“
James’ - “‘Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off-‘“
“Terrible though it was to hear his parents’ last moments replayed inside his head, these were the only times Harry had heard their voices since he was a very small child. But he’d never be able to produce a proper Patronus if he half wanted to hear his parents again…”

I appreciate that Oak is willing to see what’s next without automatically writing something off and assuming he won’t enjoy it just because the first experience(s) wasn’t really his thing.
I think the “new” Dumbledore will grow on you. D2’s portrayal became my favorite as the movies progressed and I honestly can’t imagine Richard Harris (D1) playing some of the future scenes. I love the gravitas Michael Gambon brought to the role.
The next movie has a scene people whine about a lot where Dumbledore is agitated and loud with Harry after his name comes out of the Goblet (I know you’ve already posted GoF on Patreon which is the only reason I’d mention a potential spoiler). The book says, “…Dumbledore asks calmly,” and people use this as a reason to crap on D2 which is absolutely ridiculous. In that one question and the way he asks it they convey about half a chapter or more of half a dozen other characters sharing their outrage/worry/concern. It was a brilliant choice by the writer, director, actor, whoever it was that chose it. We instantly understand that chill Dumbledore is unsettled by this and we (and Harry) know it’s a BIG DEAL without being blatantly told. It does nothing to permanently alter how we view Dumbledore throughout the remaining movies unless you’re pissed off that the movie doesn’t exactly match the books. 🙄
Oak is right that Dumbledore is letting Harry stretch his wings but is always there in the background guiding him and giving life lessons. It’s important to remember though, too, that Dumbledore is Headmaster of a busy school not to mention all his other endeavors. He’s not their home room teacher. Principals rarely have this close of a relationship with students.

This legit is my favourite Harry Potter movie from the film series.
The best quality of this movie was the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. We never got such a creative film making style from any of the other films in this series. Prisoner of Azkaban really stands out from all the others.
One of my favorite decisions that Alfonso made was to change the way students wore their uniforms. He made it more casual and realistic for us to relate to it.
There were many scenes in which the trio wear casual attires, unlike the first two films, in which all students wore the uniform In the same way in almost every scene, sometimes even at night time scenes. I like that they changed the geographical location of Hagrids hut too. I was so impressed on how Alfonso places so many beautiful insert shots between each scene, like the camera pasing through the glass of the clock tower, the shot where a bright red flower freezes and shrivels as a dementor passes near it, the camera moving through the mirror to the other side in the scene of Lupin teaching the spell "Ridikulus", The inclution of the sound effect of a running rat, when Harry is looking to encounter Peter Pettigrew as shown by the Marauder's map.
But my most favorite idea of all, was how Alfonso establishes the passage of time and the changing of seasons, with the shot of the Whomping Willow changing its appearance after each season. It's brilliant how he chose to do that, because the willow turns out to be an integral part of the story as it becomes the the location of Sirius Black's encounter, his revelation and the mind blowing plot twist.
The only shot that I'm not much of a fan, is the freeze frame shot of Harry's face at the end.
But honestly, I just love this film.

The laws are that you can’t intentionally do magic outside of school if you are underage, and he had an uncontrollable emotional response- millions of kids his age and younger have probably done similar with the rise in extreme emotion so it would make sense that the laws put in place would make that distinction and decide not to charge him for it. And, even if it was an issue, the worst they would probably do is expel him from Hogwarts, I doubt that they would send a kid younger than 17 to Azkaban. Maybe their version of a mental institution but not to prison.

    • @aliciakaras4067

The accidental magic 100% should have gotten him expelled, and probably would have any other year. He got a warning notice and nearly was expelled for Dobby's magic a year earlier, and they couldn't prove Harry had even been the one to do the magic. Fudge knew that Sirius Black was out for Harry, though, and the safest place for him to go was Hogwarts, so he couldn't expel him. If the public found out Fudge was responsible for expelling Harry and Sirius Black found and killed him, he'd have the PR blowback of the century and probably lose his job.
The lumos spell... total movie-only plothole, but I'd buy John's explanation.

    • @pieceofgosa
      @pieceofgosa 2 роки тому

@@dylancole1910 the laws do not make that distinction & the only reason Harry wasn't severely reprimanded was the direct intervention of the Minister for Magic. Harry received an official warning the previous year after Dobby (not even Harry) cast a hover charm at the Dursley's. As for expulsion from Hogwarts, that's not up to the ministry & even if Harry had been arrested & sent to Azkaban, Dumbledore would be under no obligation to expel him.

The marauders map was created by a group of friends that actually consisted of Remus Lupin (moony) Peter pettigrew (wormtail) sirius black (padfoot) James potter (prongs). The nicknames they gave each other after each (minus remus) becoming an animagus to help remus’s transformations as a werewolf because they could accompany him as animals. You saw Peter and Sirius’s animagus forms and James’s was a stag which is the same as Harry’s patronus (also why he thought he saw his father when he saw the stag patronus)

The world in HP3 feels so much richer and more magical than any other HP film because of his incredible creative vision of it. Oh, they didn't leave out just a little but A LOT. Little interactions that tie everything together in the end, like Hermione always being tired and short-tempered throughout that year, because of attending so many classes, and that her getting the time turner at all was a big exception because she is such a model student. (The whole story about the Marauders, but that was already mentioned...) And it only gets worse with the next movies, because the books got more and more complex and big. They are basically mystery thrillers, not just young adult books. The next book is my absolute favourite (Rowling was at her absolute peak there) but sadly the movie doesn't do it justice for me, because I just know what all is missing and how they changed characters to make them more cinematically appealing. The fate of one, who has read the books first. :) But I am sure you will enjoy the whole series. I can only recommend reading the books too, they are just awesome! :D A true phenomenon of our time.

The Shrieking Shack was an abandoned house in Hogsmeade. For many years, villagers thought it was haunted because they often heard screams coming from inside, and Albus Dumbledore encouraged the rumour, as he was the one who commissioned it, due to Remus Lupin's Lycanthropy. The secret passageway could be seen on the Marauder's Map, which was at the possession of Remus, Sirius, Pettigrew and James-as it's been mentioned in other comments. The Shrieking Shack was only used so that Remus Lupin would have a place for his monthly transformations into a werewolf in secret and in safety. The yells and shouts heard by the villagers were really Lupin biting and scratching himself due to lack of humans to infect. The Whomping Willow was planted the same year that Remus Lupin arrived at Hogwarts as a student. The tree can be frozen by pushing a knot on its base. During the Marauders time at Hogwarts, a transformed Peter Pettigrew, whose Animagus form was a rat, would slip in and push the knot so they could go in. This was one of the best info I had read in the books, and I wish this story would be more clear in the movie too. Prizoner of Azkaban is my second fav film of the series, after the Goblet of Fire. Can't wait to watch your reaction to that 😂 Keep goinggggg!!!!

Sirius Black, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew learned to be animagi to accompany Lupin while Lupin is a werewolf to make the transformation less worse. Dumbledore had planted the whomping willow and put in a secret entrance to the shrieking shack so that when Lupin was studying at Hogwarts, he could have used the shack during full moons.

I gotta say I love how in the first 2 movies it’s a classic „happy ending“- story like in the end our protagonists win and everything ends up being good all conflict is resolved.
Even in Prisoner of Azkaban there’s still hope, in the end we kinda get some sort of happy ending but you also realize that not always every aspect of the story can end well for the protagonists.
Sometimes the world‘s just unfair- in this case with Lupin getting fired and having to leave the school in the end, Peter Pettigrew getting away and also Sirius not getting redemption from officials which resolves in Harry and him not being able to be together and Sirius having to live in hiding basically or else he’ll be executed.
By the fourth movie however, there’s no hope
left anymore. No happy ending but instead cruel reality.

Honestly my favorite book from the series when I was little, and probably my top 2 for the movies. It's the book/movie that makes the whole franchise take a massive dive into morality, intrigue, emotion, and lessons. You see how the series is not just about the mystical magic of growing up.

In the book, muggle authorities were also notified by the Ministry, Black being "armed with a muggle wand called a gun." 😂 Also Harry is extremely edgy, Snape is absolutely unmerciful to Harry, at a scale way beyond how the movie portrays them, because they'd become unlikable characters to some people because of how edgy they could be at times.

Knowing in advance how much Oak grows to love this series, I knew that this movie would be where his enthusiasm picked up. This is by far my favourite HP movie (though it is a close race) and it was so fun getting to watch you guys react to all the twists and turns and red herrings. It reminded me of 9 year old me watching my dad react for the first time. ❤

This was the best physical and temperamental depiction of harry in all 8 movies.. perhaps 4 too... They combed his hair and did away with much of his sass and mischief in the later movies
