  • Today I show you how to add GPS Geo Tag your images on most OM System/Olympus cameras. There are two methods - one is done in real-time on the OM-1 and the other can be done on most Olympus cameras afterward.

    Method 2 seems better all round: Method 1 is useless in wildlife photography as the subject will disappear while waiting for connection; Method 2 allows adding data to as many (Olympus) cameras as you have with you. Updating the images in the camera can take a few minutes to complete. Thank you for this clear description.

      @@RobTrek I prefer using method 2 as I mostly bring with me more than one camera. Then after the shoot I can sync every camera to the OI. Share GPS log.
      I wish they could make OI. Share to save more than one camera and let me select the connected one. One the other side, the QR-code initiation only takes seconds.

    This was a good tutorial, my OM-1 even with firmware 1.6 still has the problems I originally encountered, which is, whenever I exit the connected screen using the menu it always disconnects, then requires me to re-connect with the camera if I want to use OM-share. Not sure why, it's just completely annoying.
    Olympus really needs to open their API so someone can write a proper application, they put very little effort into their own.

    Rob, two things. I'm having a problem connecting either my EM-1 MK III or my OM-1 with my phone. BT works okay but the network function doesn't want to connect. Second, you stated that the phone (OI Share) syncs to the time on the camera. I have no idea because I haven't been able to connect but, it seems it would be more accurate to sync the camera with the phone time as that is 'network' time and very accurate.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому

      Sorry for the confusion on how time syncs. The camera will sync to the phone's time when connected through the app, not the other way around. As for connecting to your phone's wifi, there are so many variables it will be hard to answer remotely. Your best bet is to visit mu-43.com forums and see if anyone there can help. It's a great community. Let me know what phone you have and I'll see if I can come up with some ideas. It has to be an android as I'm not familiar with apple products.

    Are there any settings in the camera, say EM1.3 that I need to change to get the time to sync with the phone? I changed time zones once an just turned on the app. I could use the camera remotely but later when I checked the time on the camera was different to the phone. I could not get this feature to work for some reason. Could you do a tutorial on this one day.

    Rob, great video, very informative; how does geo-tagging affect battery life?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому

      Everyone's use case will be different, so it's a purely academic exercise. Bluetooth standards recommend 1 watt, but it can be as low as 10 milliwatt. Assuming 1 watt and a fully charged battery that is 2280milliamp, I get 2.280 x 7.2v = 16.4 watts. 1/16.4 = 6%. So I'm totally guessing, but it will reduce battery life by 6%. It's more likely to be less than that. Maybe another viewer can chime in with real world numbers. There are just too many variables for me to figure it out.

    I sometimes use two cameras when I’m traveling to avoid having to switch lenses all the time. It seems I have to deregister one camera in order to register and then geotag with another camera. Is that indeed the case? There’s no way to avoid that?

    i recently purchased an OM-5 and used it for the first time on a trip in Bryce Canyon, UT. i setup IO.Share on my iphone and synched the cameras according to your instructions while i was out there, and then turned off the wifi and bluetooth on my OM-5 just before the photo walk so i could just collect the geotags on my phone, and had planned to synch them later via method 2. once I got back to CA (a different time zone) and tried method 2 to add the geotags, the process seems to fail each time right at the end saying "there are no photos to geotag" even though i can see the photos and the location in the IO.Share app. the current time settings currently match on my phone and camera, but no dice. am i missing a step? do i need to adjust my phone and camera to match the time zone in which the photos were taken?

    Dear Rob, I have a question that am hoping you would be kind to help me with..
    I have been having the EM 10 M2 for few years and I have been looking to upgrade for some time. One of the camera that I have shortlisted is the EM 5 M3 which is within my budget buying used from a camera shop. I thought of moving to Fuji (probably because of the jpeg hype) but the tele zoom lens coverage in MFT is unmatched in APSC...
    I see that most of the review are positive and still is a good buy even in 2023..
    Apart from asking you if you find it a great upgrade from EM10 M2 I also wanted to check with you regarding the jpeg IQ performance in EM 5 M3. One thing I don't want to do is to spend a lot of time editing photos, I am hoping that images SOOC is perfectly fine to share with the better processor and sensor.
    Appreciate your thoughts and guidance in this.

    • @RobTrek

      I find the em10.2 images are a bit warmer than the em5.3, especially with the kit lens. The em5.3 is more accurate, but it’s very subtle. I’d upgrade to the em1.2 rather than the em5.3 if it’s within your budget. It’s basically the same camera but with more features and much better battery life. As for Fuji jpg hype, I bought an xt-30. It’s definitely interesting and I know many love it, but didn’t keep my attention for very long. Its very subjective, but the novelty wore off for me.

    Method 2 applied at download would be more convenient, so on PC or Msc. The fly in my ointment is that I use custom software (I wrote it) to download the images. Bulk tagging anything untagged would work, I have all my images in Pictures/2023 etc.
    But it's always recording the location of the phone, not of the camera. If I set up an M1 II to do images for a timelapse, then leave it and wander off and set up another M1 II for another timelapse perhaps not nearby, once tagged the EXIF data will say the two cameras were in the same place.
    Perhaps "Near Perth" is close enough in practice, but I would be move comfortable with more precise information in each image.
    Possibly not relevant here, but I have even more Lumix cameras, and I have used four at a time. If I want 300 shots at 5 seconds apart (ten seconds video to US broadcast standards), that's a long time doing nothing between sequences, while the lighting changes.
    I think every modern camera likely to be used for wildlife or landscapes needs GPS and a bulb timer so I can do my 300 shots with a three seconds exposure and five seconds interval without requiring external accessories. Preferably with its high resolution mode.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому +1

      You might be able to modify your custom software to add gps coordinates that you can grab from google maps. As an alternate, I used ExifTool and ExifToolGui to write in bulk gps coordinates. So what you could do is take one picture, use the app to write the coordinates to that image, setup the intervalometer, then move to your next location and repeat. After your intervals are done, use the exiftool to bulk write all the images with the gps coordinates from that first image.

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer Рік тому

      @@RobTrek That's an interesting idea. My custom software is a bash script, I can attach as many memory card readers and cameras as I have USB ports, and it finds all of them and imports all of the images in one go.
      I am not going to change the script to fiddle with EXIF data (I don't think ExifTool supports raw file), and I do not favour changing raw files at all, but I probably could do a pass with a separate program, sort the cameras by brand, model, serial number and for each the image timestamp. Timestamp differences would show whether images are part of a timestamp. If there is GPS data to be found or supplied, it could be written to an XMP file. I think.
      I bought a nice new laptop at the beginning of the year, it has four USB ports. Two of them are USB 2.0. Not apparent in-store, they're not colour coded.
      I wondered why it took around an hour for the card from my S1R.

    The fatal flaw with the OM-Share solution is that you can only pair one camera at a time. Also if you have the bluetooth remote shutter you can't pair the phone with camera. My solution is to use Geotag Photos Pro to create the geotracks and then geocode on the computer. LR can do this but since I use Bridge/ACR I have to use a different app. Capture One geocodes I think but I know Houdah Geo does and will display your photos on a Google Earth map. Geotag Photos automatically saves the tracks to the cloud for you. I suppose I could just use the geotracks from OM-Share if I could figure out how to get the files.
