It's like Squaresoft producing "Final Fantasy" in 1987 and adding "Final" to the title because they did think that would be their last game ever (the company was very close to bankrupcy). And now in 2019 Final Fantasy has 15 main installments, Kingdom Hearts, it assimilated Enix (well, that was back then, when they got too ambitious with the Spirits Within movie),etc.

Ever since Marvel comics were publishing 'superhero' comics, their two best selling comics were Spider-Man and The X-Man. Avengers was Marvel's 4th highest selling comic, but they were pretty much Marvel's B-Team beside the X-Men. Avengers sold well, and to those who were big on Marvel comics, they were highly regarded characters. However, to those outside, The Avengers, including Iron Man and Captain America were relatively unknown. It's the work of the folk at Marvel Studios who have made these under-appreciated characters what they are now, in the sense of their place in popular culture.

In the 1960's Iron Man was marginally popular, but Spidey, the Fantastic Four, and the Hulk were the top sellers. Thor and Silver Surfer also had cult followings in the late 60's and into the early 70's, thanks to trippy stories and art. Then in the mid to late 1970's, the X-Men changed directions and became hugely popular. The Avengers were always changing members, with Cap being the only constant...usually. Iron Man was boring, until they did the "Demon in a Bottle" story line. That was the mid 1980's and it was the first time anyone cared about Iron Man as a character. He was not more popular than Hank Pym or Hawkeye before that. Now, all three are popular thanks to the MCU.

Iron Man, was popular when first released in the 60's, and had varying degrees of popularity over the years. Many argued, his solo comics suffered from poor writing during the down periods FWIW.
However/Either way, he (and tangentially his father) were always written as central/integral parts of Marvel Comics and it's interweaving story line and characters. So, it's only fitting the character kicked off the MCU in it's current form.
So no: Iron Man wasn't a great cross over success to outsiders as Spiderman, Batman or Superman. Nah. However, he was always essential and well known to Marvel Comics, and it's central various story lines.
Thus, his character was straight from Central Casting. I think it (the reception) may just come down to the writing?
Note/Interesting fact: The original Avengers were: Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, and Hulk. CA was actually found and defrosted in the 4th Avengers comic.

MSL525: Iron Man was never written as a central part of the Marvel Universe until Marvel started making movies. They chose him to start with because they felt it would be a more relatable character than some other heroes and easy to do well with modern CGI. As a result, they increased his importance in the comics.
Go back to the 1980's and for a large chunk it wasn't even Tony in the armor. There was no Illuminati back then. Reed Richards was the go-to science guy. Iron Man was just the gadget guy. In fact, he was so unimportant that he didn't even get his own solo book until 1968, long after Tales of Suspense (the book he premiered in) became a Captain America book.

The reason why Marvel is so successful are people like me. Not a comic book fan. Thought that comic book movies were time-fillers at best. Eventually stumbled over a few MCU movies, with no context whatsoever what they were even about. Actually wasn't all that enamoured with Ironman. Somehow saw Captain America at one point. Became interested. Saw The Winter Soldier and became a die-hard "watch even every TV show out there" fan.

As some UA-camr noted, one reason why Marvel is so impressive is because they built the hype and fame by themselves for 10 years. The reason why The Force Awakens was such a big deal is because of what Lucas ended in the 80s. The rest behind Marvel's success is more of what everybody says, it's a connected franchise that takes it's time to build their characters, you always get the feeling that you are watching the same universe, the utterly diverse stories and tones also add uniqueness on each character and their films. Kevin Feige is another factor that makes the MCU perfectly functional.

One more 'superpower' of the makers of the MCU is their casting excellence. They know how to find the *_right_* actors to fit the roles. Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man, Chris Evans for Captain America, and Josh Brolin for the voice & motion capture of Thanos. You can like or dislike any or all the MCU flicks, but I cannot recall the last time I heard something like, "__________ was *_TERRIBLE_* in their role as __________! What was Kevin Feige thinking???" With Captain Marvel, we shall see if Marvel still has their magic touch.

What I find interesting about this is how DC have balls it up. MCU had 5 movies and 4 years before the first Avengers movies, and in that lot was The Hulk, first CA, first Thor and IM2 - none which people generally rate as their best outings, yet all played their part. But what it showed is with just a bit of planning (and these were relatively isolated movies) and not much time (5 years isn’t that long when you consider how long they need to start planning production), it was all there on a platter for DC. It’s just mind blowing how they have gone about it

It is pretty amazing that Marvel got better as they went. You are right that most of those Phase 1 movies aren't Marvel's best. Only Iron Man 1 really holds up now.
I wonder about DC having "arguably stronger, richer characters than marvel started with" DC has the big 3 of Supes, Bats, and WW. Plus GL and Flash are pretty good too. But it seems to fall off after that. Marvel isn't as top heavy. Spidey and now Iron Man are up there, but their depth seems better. By the time you get to Marvel's 6th best characters like maybe a Hulk or Capt America, DC is throwing Cyborg or Aquaman at you.

As a 2000s kid, my parents were more Star Trek, Star Gate, Star Wars, anything with "Star" in the name, than Marvel.
Still, since Iron Man, our house has slowly become cluttered with posters, figures, and old drawings from grade school of our beloved characters. I've had the opportunity to grow up with Tony Stark and the crew, always anxiously waiting for the next news on our Avengers as the months ticked by. Maybe they've hacked my brain, but just the sight of our characters triggers warm fuzzy feelings in me- like a part of my own childhood and coming of age story will never die. Without realizing it, Marvel's story has been so heavily wrapped around my own life that I can't imagine what my life would be like without it.
Even though I've long since come to the realization that superheroes aren't defending our universe from aliens and malicious villains, it all still feels so real to me. Over the past decade, I've seen so many characters grow and change like real people (because, in my mind, they kind of are) and have lived in their world through the big screen.
Because of how much time Marvel has spent on crafting and developing this cinematic universe, we get the chance of seeing a not too far off alternate reality.

I agree with the others that DC could do them again. Fox proved that. Sony did the Spider-Man origin story twice already. ...Though maybe Sony proved the public tires of the same story done too soon.
The problem with The Dark Knight Returns is that it's based on the silly idea of Batman and Superman fighting. There really is no way to make that work. It fails the logic test almost immediately. The only way to do it is to portray Superman as a complete moron. ....Which is what they did in BvS and is one of the reasons it was bad.
So if they tried it again the same problem would happen again. Superman would again have to be an idiot because Batman walked into the room and has to win.

On the other hand, the issue with Death of Superman is that you would probably need to have 3-4 movies before for people to get attached to Superman and hence, give his demise a very strong emotional impact. If Robert Downey Jr. would have been playing Superman all this time, this would be about the right time to do something like that. However, good luck with a) WB/DC having that sort of patience and b) even if they do, not shitting the bed during such a long period of time.

Those who scoff or roll their eyes at the mention of the MCU... I get it. Superheroes aren't for everyone. But it's an achievement. Ten years of consistently good movies culminating in arguably the greatest and most ambitious action movie ever made, and all of this started with a B-list character, a director no one knew and a lead actor no one wanted to work with. This movie series was arguably a little repetitive at first, but films like Winter Soldier, Guardians 2, Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Infinity War not only exceeded all expectations, but made me hungry for more MCU films. This franchise continues to excite fans, and is bringing an end to the first chapter of the MCU. What will happen next? What new stories will be told? What new heroes will get standalone films and what old heroes will get sequels? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure; Fans want more.
You know who I envy? Kids growing up now. They can watch all the MCU films, front to back, and see this massive story unfold in a matter of hours while we had to wait a decade.

And now, 10+ years after bankruptcy, the MCU is one of the most successful if not the most successful franchises in history. There's the other thing... Even when a movie is less than stellar, that is to say good but not great and not as lucrative (like The Dark World and Iron Man 3... both of which I enjoyed btw), it still plays into building the world. The Dark World gives of the Aether aka The Reality Stone and Iron Man 3 gives us good insight into Tony's mind. Marvel DOES plan ahead, and they DO seed their next movies (the two post credit scenes hint at age of ultron and kinda a lead up to civil war or at least a possible future for bucky). The thing is, if you miss the clues, you can still enjoy the movie. But you also don't want to skip or miss the hints or the clues...but you also don't want to miss the world-building or the character development. I was skeptical about GotG, but I knew I needed to see it so I could understand when they finally were in a crossover or something like an infinity stone turned up. And it stays fairly mostly consistent in the universe.

      @3Rayfire 5 років тому +4

Also Iron Man 3 is a prime example of character focus. Tony had a realistic reaction to the events of The Avengers, and had to deal with that throughout the film. That plays into what happens in Age of Ultron and his decisions in Civil War. It's an easily traced line a-b-c-d-e-f-g without skipping any points or beats. We get to see the guy "Who successfully privatized world peace" transform into the guy who would sign the Sokovia Accords.

    • @vadalia3860
      @vadalia3860 5 років тому

I'm personally hoping they use the Flash for some sort of time travel reboot (I'm pretty sure they've explored alternate timelines with the TV Flash) In-universe they could just keep the current Flash because he's the one causing the timeline change (out-of-universe reason being that he seems to be well liked) and current Wonder Woman because she existed as this version prior to whatever point in time they make the change at (out-of-universe reason being she's the DCEU's greatest success right now) Change absolutely everything else. I'm not huge on time travel/alternate universe plots but this is the only way I can see to undo the damage Snyder, Whedon, and the WB have caused to this universe. It should be obvious you're in the wrong timeline when Ant-Man and the Wasp, a D-list sequel, makes only 35 million dollars less worldwide than Justice League, the DCEU's version of the Avengers.

As far as results for these two unverses, this is what I see:
With Marvel, if they have a bad movie, it is maybe medicre or below average at worst but more than likely is just bland or average, but NOTterrible or bad. And when Marvel DOES hit the mark, they do REALLY well, not the best, that goes to the Nolan-verse with the Dark Knight triology, but still, the MCU at its best is REALLY good.
The DCEU at its worst is HORRIBLE. And so far, at its best, its only slightly above average at most, if not just ok.

Interestingly, the MonsterVerse (Legendary's shared universe featuring Godzilla, King Kong, and Toho monsters) looks like it's on the right track for being successful. The MonsterVerse was built on the financial success of the Godzilla remake in 2014, which was a box office success and received warm reception. The follow up movie was Kong Skull Island, which didn't reference any of the other monsters or the idea of a larger universe except for one story driven reference and a post-credit scene that showed that all these monsters exist in the same universe. Legendary is also working for a specific goal, taking their time to build up to a Godzilla vs Kong event in 2020.

Evryone forgets the Kaijus. Even the original series and It's reboots, and reboots apart from the first films, and the cross overs (mostly labeled as Godzilla films since he was the star attraction.) Not as huge a success as the MCU but they made a lot of films. As for the new American made series. I'm glad they are learning from their mistakes getting rid of what didn't work and trying to make them more interesting. The monster designs are great and people wanted to see more of them, and it looks like that'll be the case. They just need to treat the monsters as the stars and find human stories that are foils for that.

      Huh!?
The first Blade was an excellent movie and made $131 mil US at the box office. The first XMen-two years later-did $157 million. So, I guess that was a "moderate" success as well (SMH)?
Blade II in 2002, made $157 mil US. X2 (in 2003) did $214 million.
So again, where's the big difference? You can sure say Blade showed them the way.
Keep in mind: The fact the XMen movies had bigger budgets, with more well known characters than Blade, makes your comments (and Blades performance) even more incredulous.
Even the hokey Blade 3 (Trinity) in 2004 made a decent $129 mil vs X3's $234 mil in 2006.
So, yes a credible argument can be made that Blade jump-started the current Marvel-Comic movie Renaissance, indeed!

@@yoursonisold8743 I ment in the modern age. Turds like The Phantom and Batman and Robin had kinda given superhero films a bad rep because they were too cheesey and didn't have a very high level of production quality. I'm not saying Blade had a huge budget because quite clearly it didn't but it took the source material seriously and didn't make it too cheesey which it easily could have (see Buffy 92 for an example of that). I think Blade restored some of the faith in superhero films that had been lost by the aforementioned turds and others over the years. I'm not saying X-Men and Spider-Man wouldn't have happened without Blade but there's the possibility that superhero films wouldn't be as popular as they are now if the day walker hadn't hit the screen in 98.

My beloved Disney has fallen from grace. My bloodline helped make it what it was and now they have lost their way. Sure, their animated features are for the most part good but none will have the craftsmanship and timing of those early films. CG should be Pixar's thing but now Feature Animation is using it. The sad thing is it isn't consistent on their strength in stories, sometimes it is Pixar and sometimes it is Feature Animation that has the better film. But then we have Lucasfilm and the live action division, talk about a very troubled bunch. We have a shell of a franchise that is pretty aimless and films that have either no integrity, are mediocre, or serve no purpose other than to make money. Marvel is the most consistent storytelling juggernaut Disney has right now and it is telling.

Disney is not interested in making quality animated Marvel stories (a few Spiderman series, one Dr. Strange direct to DVD release, and perhaps the old 90's X-Men tv show, not withstanding.) Unlike DC which puts a tonne of effort into *crafting great stories,* sharp writing, quality animation, and perfect voice casting,. The Marvel animated universe exists *_only_* to sell toys. It feels as lifeless as the plastic action-figures it is designed to push. A good business model but at the expense of storytelling excellence.

DC in particular have wasted entire story lines & villans like Lex, Zod, Doomsday and the Batman Vs Superman and Death of Superman Storylines which deserved a better treatment
No one is saying that they can't make creative changes as Marvel has done it a lot but it works because it builds on the source material and adds Marvels own spin, not let's cram as many stories or characters into one film and hope it works
You hit the nail on the head by saying Marvel created two good stand alone films first hinting at more if it worked and continue to make good stand alone films first and the tie ins make sense, DC and others are the opposite
Marvel I'd pay to watch in the cinema, DC I can wait for digital or Blue-ray/DVD and am not too fussed about seeing

i am absolutely obsessed with the MCU. and the thing is, i was too young to go to the cinema to see iron man when it came out, or even Avengers in 2012... but still i have watched every single MCU movie, and a fair share of their TV shows as well. I grew up with Batman - bc my mom loved him and i was entirely too young to watch those movies too (i swear the joker gave me nightmares for a month) - and i loved him. Batman is still my favorite DC hero. But the DCEU takes itself seriously in a way that the MCU never did. Hawkeye said it best "None of this makes sense." the marvel movies mostly just feel so much lighter and for me are so much more fun to watch...
i still love the dark knight trilogy tho. its great.

Marvel deserves the praise it is getting at the moment. Infinity War is now my favorite superhero film of all time along with Watchmen. Going to watch it again tomorrow. I will have to disagree with you on the DCEU. Man Of Steel, Batman v Superman ultimate edition and Wonder Woman were awesome. Some of the best comic book movies ever made. Many fans loved those movies. Only Suicide Squad and Justice League were terrible. WB is the main problem. They are responsible for rushing things and ruining Suicide Squad and Justice League with reshoots. They should've just released Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League which fans are still asking for.

Definitely agree with you with WB being the main issue here. They don't know what they're doing and shouldn't be in charge of such a big franchise. The reason Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy worked so well was because Nolan wouldn't allow studio interference.
I can't speak on the Ultimate Editions, as I've not gotten around to them -- Sadly, most who didn't like the movie won't go back to watch the 'better' version. The theatrical will always be the movie that people judge and compare to -- which is why the better version should always be released theatrically. WB really screwed the pooch.

Always been a Marvel a fan cuz they were the underdogs. DC has a lot just hasn't been looking the same quality. One thing from dis video is movie wise they've taken known & obscure characters n make it work. Once again I'm a Marvel fan so erybody n the movies ain't new to me.

I agree with you to a degree, had they gone for just Snyder as director for SS and JL, they would've at least ensured their MoS and BvS fans' enthusiasm (WW was doing well either way). But the suits didn't want Snyder numbers, they demanded *Marvel* numbers at any cost and ruined what audience trust they'd begun garnering.

I still think Batman vs superman would have worked much better if it DID use Christopher Nolan Batman, and had tried to work more with that instead of just saying "screw it" and rebooting batman.

If they would have kept to Bales Batman and even Routh's Superman into a bigger DCU franchise, it would have been as big as what Marvel is now, both were contracted to do a crossover movie anyways, shame we never got it.

The Marvel universe was successful, because of the effort they put into the characterisation and character arcs of these "B list" superheroes. They were blank canvasses because a lot of people just didn't know anything about them, so the movie makers could fill that gap meaningfully. And that's what people want to see, interesting adventures of appealing fictional individuals. That's why Star Wars is currently failing. Because they do zero to make the characters they use believable or likeable and the character arcs are all over the place.

There was a time that I thought every superhero movie is exactly the same.
MCU kept surprising me and each time I thought, 'this can't get any better' only to be proven wrong.
I literally grew to love these characters like they're my friends, especially Tony and Thor.
Now I find it extrely hard to say goodbye.

*I love that more people are becoming Marvellites.*
It was always this way. DC had its comic universe first. Marvel were brash upstarts with their more character-based, relatable, and flawed characters... but they stole the crown for a reason. Now we've seen it's the same with movies. History repeats itself.
