But he turns over the pages in the middle of the book instead of the edge. Damn this guy really teaches a new lesson in how to not treat your board games in almost any of his videos.
Minor correction: The first mine must be placed on the underlined "1" spot, later tents need to be placed next to existing tents (you are digging the mine from the entrance). I am looking forward to see if anyone around here wants to play campaign or character mode...
This game sounds really fun, but if I understand correctly what it comes down to in the end is having the most points? I like the story aspect and the character development, but would prefer other winning conditions and maybe even something with co-op? I've looked into Gloomhaven and 7th Continent, though they are a bit more pricey. Can anyone suggest some other games that includes these aspects. Also if I had to pick between Gloomhaven or 7th Continent to play with my fiance which one would you say is better and why? Thanks.
I liked Above and Below but I think there aren't too many others in my gaming group that liked it. I really hope that won't put too many people off from this game because it looks much more solid. (plus I did back it too)
I'm wondering what Zee thinks of this, I remember him saying he wanted Tales of Arabian Knights to be dethroned. Would love to hear his thoughts on the game.
It seems like a mix between a boardgame and a roleplaying game. These kind of games are very hard to design properly. Thx for the review Tom, funny sound FX btw!
Kurga ZIno best to watch a play through. After watching one I quickly realised each player only does a few mini paragraph stories in a game. So most of the game is a mash of Euro mechanics. Nothing wrong with that but worth knowing that this isn't anywhere like a n rpg. It's a very thematic Euro with strong story elements added. So not for everyone.
Kurga ZIno There are 4 different ways/types to play in this game. The storytelling or character mode is really fun, takes a long time but so much fun. Or you can just play it like a "regular" game etc. I think it's a neat and fun game for new players, family, gamegroups etc. Tom doesn't always make good reviews of games. Look at other persons/channels doing a review of this game, I do this most time of a game I didn't get or thought was really confusing when he explains it..... :-) look at other channels, I think it's a really fun game!
I feel like I'm the complete opposite to Tom. I didn't like the lack of adventuring/ story telling is Near and Far, I liked that it was more relevant and focused to what you were doing, but I didn't like that it capped out and I couldn't go on as many adventures as I wanted. Can't decide if I prefer this or above and below.
Can anyone comment on the amount of interaction in the game? From what I've seen, it seems mostly indirect, like going to a city space someone else wanted to go, taking a party member someone else wanted, making it harder to use certain roads etc. Am I missing something? I haven't played the game. I quite like what I see but low interaction would probably keep me from buying this.
I got Carson City bc I like the dueling mechanic, which also reminded me of Cyclades (& Jamaica). I didn't know this game would utilize the same combat mechanism! Cool.
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me, And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired, And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells, And run my stick along the public railings, And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick the flowers in other people's gardens, And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat, And eat three pounds of sausages at a go, Or only bread and pickle for a week, And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry, And pay our rent and not swear in the street, And set a good example for the children. We will have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practise a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised, When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple! Jenny Joseph
Yeah, for instance it does not have the "item slot" complexity of A&B, and the arcade mode makes it easier to play without using the book, just simple missions from a deck.
I love the fact that you use a Kiwi bird to carry your stuff. Poor little guy, I bet he struggles with anything heavier than a somewhat full wallet. That said, games looks gorgeous and also seems to play wonderfully. Wish I had backed this, hope my LGBS backed it so I can buy it from them.
He likes the game so much, he won't even hit the box firmly with the gavel. That's enough of a recommendation for me.
But he turns over the pages in the middle of the book instead of the edge. Damn this guy really teaches a new lesson in how to not treat your board games in almost any of his videos.
I am about 8 plays into my KS edition. I love it. It may end up being one of my top 10 games of all time because of how much pure fun it provides.
I love the multiple boards with character stories. It looks like a bit of a legacy game and I like it!
Minor correction: The first mine must be placed on the underlined "1" spot, later tents need to be placed next to existing tents (you are digging the mine from the entrance). I am looking forward to see if anyone around here wants to play campaign or character mode...
"Players will start with a dog
(or if you're foolish enough, a cat...)"
Well said.
Gahhhh. Making me want this game, Tom. Wasn't impressed by Above and Below like everyone else, but like the look of this one.
So between these two, N&F is a better choice you think?
Near and then Far....love the comedy

I know I’m 5 years late, but have you tried gloomhaven yet haha? So good! But it is HEAVY.
Phew, that was a relief I backed it on KS and it looked like a winner but there's always a shred of doubt there.
I didn't back on KS bc we have A&B and we think it's only OK so I was hesitant. I guess I should have. But I did back RRG upcoming Empires II.
Dave Dogge Me too, just got it in the mail as well, can't wait for the chance to sit down and play!

Thank you for the information Rik. :)

Thank you Lonewolf, I'll check some reviews/playthrough about the character mode, if I can find any.

Will it play well with 2 players only? Thoughts?

haha "shut the oldest door" , good one Tom :)
this game is new to me. I was on the fence about purchasing, thanks to this I did!!!
So he didn't add it to his collection? ...
I got Carson City bc I like the dueling mechanic, which also reminded me of Cyclades (& Jamaica). I didn't know this game would utilize the same combat mechanism! Cool.
Nice cartoon sound effects. 😃👍 Reminded me of Scooby-Doo or The Flintstones.

Should I play the campaign or the character version first? Is one version superior to the other?

I backed it on KS, but haven't had time to play it yet. LOVE A&B though so wasn't too worried. Was surprised Tom like it so much.
At the end of the video, what's the name of the game on the left of Tom, in the same shelf of Onitama? Thanks
It looks like a dice tower, not a game
Too complicated for my age group... :(
Between 3rd and 6th grade elementary, but in South Korea.
Wow, there are a lot of rules! Much more complex than Above & Below.
Not so. The game is really easy once you get going. While there are quite a few components, the game is no more complex than Above and Below.
Yeah, for instance it does not have the "item slot" complexity of A&B, and the arcade mode makes it easier to play without using the book, just simple missions from a deck.
Is this a good two player game
Yeah I enjoy playing it with my girlfriend

Thank goodness! I was worried that I was going to have to call the Animal Cruelty hotline for a minute there.
Reviews by Grover!
Saw Rodney's game and the how to play video.. I already had the "first" game, this one is a no-brainer.. :D Thanks Tom!!
haAA GOOD JOKE. xD
NEVER enough silliness!
That was awesome.
funny, I didn't care for the sound effects, but the joke was needed & I got it the 1st time.
In the Sesame-streets episode about near and far they used a similar sound effect, so it was that effect that got me laughing.
I always thought of that Grover gag everytime I saw this title, sot hanks for doing that. Really made me laugh.
Haha! Great into. :) Grover rules.

Far, near, wherever you are. ;)
i love you always and forever. near and far closer together
Hey, I really like the new music on the component drop. Sounds good.
Just not a fan of these story games. Blah.
"Yea, but is it good?"
Dzy yeah not really clear whether he liked the game or not. Maybe if he'd said "I love it" another 70 times or so....
I don't think he was objective enough.
Mine and my wife's current favorite game! She's killing me in our campaign tho! Great review Tom!
How does it play 2 player?
And me. I need to up my game.
Tom you all should do a live play through of this game. It looks like fun.
Just got my copy in the mail today!
Wish I backed this instead of Above & Below. I jumped on that, & didn't pick this up bc I had the aforementioned game.
Jake Kamps Same here. I was worried there was too much roll-to-resolve for my tastes, also.
