Once more, this one looks like the price has increased since filming (in the UK at least). I wouldn't spend more than about £60 on this piece guys Product Link: www.loruswatches.com/Watch/RM369FX9 Other colourways: bit.ly/LorusSquareBlack Other Lorus video mentioned: ua-cam.com/video/pDLbDIStuBQ/v-deo.html
It’s been two years, but where can I buy it? I really want a Monaco Homage in my collection and this seems pretty good compared to the Chinese knock offs.
I'm a second generation Watchmaker. My dad was never a watch collector or even a watch enthusiast. It was always what put food on the table. Even today, he has maybe 2-3 personal watches. I'm 37, and have been doing watch work for only 6 or 7 years. And only recently started to collect and be interested in them last working on them in the last 2-3 years. I've found the amount of fanboy-ism/snobbery in the watch world to be extremely annoying. I usually try to educate where I can, but for the most part stick to myself where I can. That said, I'd own this Lorus myself, although the size may sway me more than anything.
FACTS. Everything I love will always be slightly too big for me. But only by a LITTLE. And I think that drives me more crazy than it would if a watch didn't fit at all
Vintage mechanicals are our friends. I got a beautiful 1960s Vostok Komandirski with black dial and gold finish (an officers' model?). It's like 36mm. Cost me £35. My watch-skeptical kids complimented me on it and think it looks really sharp.
Nice to see a Monaco homage. Unfortunately think you're right, the price is a little bit of a grey point! I'd probably opt for another option. Great unbiased review as always!
The key measurement may be surface area. For a circular watch to have the same area as a 38mm square watch, it would need a diameter of just under 43mm. Sounds like that's the sort of presence this watch has.
Agreed. People buy the XL sizes of the Cartier Tank online, it gets home, and they find it looks gaudy and totally inappropriate for such an elegant piece!
If you love this Monaco inspired look you should have a look at the Lorus RT351GX9. In my opinion the round case look nicer. The only downside is that the one with the round case is also a bigger watch.
Well, if it has a round case, it's not Monaco inspired, is it ? It certanly looks nice and might wear better but i'd say it's just another vintage inspired watch.
FWIW: I have a LORUS watch for over 40 years... Got it as a B-day present when I was 14. Wore it through high school It sat neglected for a long time but I recently popped a fresh battery in it and it's keeping pretty much perfect time. I actually decided to put a new NATO on it too, and it's a tasty little dive watch that looks a bit like a cross between a Sea Dweller and a Blancpain.
Hey Ben, I recently stumbled upon your channel and am loving the content! I'm planning on purchasing my first watch and am looking towards the Tissot Everytime Medium 38mm. What are your thoughts on this watch and do you have any alternatives in the same price range? Thanks
Thank you for sharing your take on this Cool watch Ben. If you find you’re unable to wear it, this Lorus fan will be happy to take it off your hands for £5 more than you paid for it. 🧐
Hi Ben. Thank you for the video. I would like to politely disagree with you. That watch in my view, fits your wrist just fine. Pause the video at 2:58. The watch design is very much that of some the racing chronograph's from the 1970's. Racing chronographs are traditionally larger in size for increased legabilty so that the chronograph can be read at a glance while racing a car. The watch has lighter colour sub dials which are also there to aid legabilty, and are a reflection of the watches racing status. With this in mind, being a racing chronograph, it should be slightly larger than your normal watches. If you were to make it smaller, then being a racing chronograph - in my view it would look wrong on your wrist.
Hallo Ben, I absolutely love this size and design. The quartz movement is cheap, but very reliable. I think it's Cool. I just don't get the Nato, for it is a homage to the Rally original. A good leather would make it shine! Maybe a white dial?
A Tag Heuer Monaco homage I really like the look of is the Tissot Quadrato chronograph. They don't make it any more but they do pop up on ebay occasionally
I just bought a 'Megir' off Amazon which is another budget Monaco homage and looks good online (it arrives in a day or two), but if I had seen this first I might have gone for it, it looks great. For me with these square dials somehow the bulkiness is part of the look, I don't mind it but it means you have to be a little selective in which occassions you're wearing it for - I vote COOL
This watch is always sold out or marked up (blue dial) . I haven't been able to get my hands on one. For under 100 it's by far one of the better Monaco homages out there. Can't hate on the watch that much especially for the price. Can't expect any part of it to be even close to what the actual real version is.
I have ordered this watch and should be getting it soon. I prefer a 40+ mm watch, and did take into account the square shape despite its listed dimensions, so I am glad your review says it wears like a 40+ mm watch. I plan on putting a perforated black leather strap on it when I get it.
Put it on a rally leather perforated type strap and would look far better .... Might also look ok on a person nylon straight through. I'd go for the black face option ... Not bad though for the price.
I like it! The fact it’s square obviously gives it a different eye catching look. I’ve got a square Tissot chronograph one silver with white dial & love it! The fact it’s 100m is a bonus. Cool👍🏻😎
Think of a round watch as a square watch without the corners, when you are considering buying a square watch and sizes. I became aware of this with Nomos Tetras being 29mm wide, but seeming much bigger.
The real difference in shape with the Monaco is the thickness. The case in the Heuer is thinner, with the glass adding the 2 mm needed by the hands. Fortunately I don't need this Lorus 'cause I have the real Monaco, but it's really cool
I think you should give the Orient Kamasu a shot, definitely a great watch currently around $300. And the one with the red dial is one that you can mix and match with your wardrobe.
I can't find this watch anywhere. I have however seen very close replicas of the Monaco, that are automatic on Ali Express for about £50 and I'm tempted to buy one and see what they're like. Since I don't have about £4000 to splash out on the real deal
I like it because from a distance, looks like one of my favorite watches that donned the wrist of Steve McQueen, who just so happens to be among the coolest celebrity who ever lived.
I think that it looks really good on your wrist. Yes, it's not a small watch but it doesn't look too big Personally I don't like the crono's hand at the 6 o' clock and the seconds hand in the center I like the opposite but I think that's a cool watch
It would fall into the Cool category in my opinion. A great budget piece, would be fun to have. Just wish you would have given us a glimpse of the lume (and with some other watches as well). I know lume is not an important part for watches like this, but would still like it to be included in the review. Other than that, a great review. :)
Great video, but one thing I keep getting confused about is that when you look at watches with NATO straps, you say that the 2 layers under the watch add to the bulk, but i don’t see why there would be 2 layers? Am I the one wearing my NATOs wrong? I always put the flappy bit around my wrist before pulling the long end through the keeper on the end of it, leaving one layer under the watch itself. This includes a Wenger with the exact same leather NATO as the one you looked at. Am I doing it wrong?
Technically, the strap go thru both lug, then thru that flappy bit. So the dial will not move around, or stay in that small area. I wear it like you do tho lol
Why does it "drop off" in your opinion if I may ask? Just from looking at it I really like the style of the watch and actually even think about ordering it.
Surface is key for the overall impression of the size: Square watch: 42x42 is about 17.6 cm2. Surface of a circle with diameter 42 (pi times the radius squared) is about 13.8 cm2. That is a difference of almost 4 cm2. To put it in another way: A circle watch with surface 17.6 cm2 would measure a diameter of 4,6 cm.
Or to put this same thought another way: A square with side dimension of "s" will have the same area as a circle whose diameter is s*√(4/π), or about 1.1284 times bigger. This could easily be approximated by multiplying by 9/8. In the video, the square was 38. This gives the same area as a circle with diameter of 38*1.1284=42.9
I think this one is uncool for me. The square design just seems too bulky. On another note, I recently got one of the Pagani Design chronographs from your "watch this before you buy a vincero" video. I think they might have improved their watch since you made the video as it now boasts 100m water resistance on the case back (although I still don't think I'll ever swim with it). The second hand on the subdial also is hitting all the marks on mine.
The price is up fairly substantially here in the US. Like all Lorus watches, I like the way it looks, but when it comes down to the details it falls down. I don't mind how big it is, but for the price I'd want a sapphire crystal. (It was on the border when you got it, but for what it costs now, I'd definitely want one.) Also, in general terms I am down on quartz watches (having it all set when you pick it up after not having worn it for a month is great, but having to replace the battery every few years is often more trouble than it's worth) and won't buy one that costs over $50 USD unless its solar, so as attractive as this (and most other Lorus watches) is (are), it's out for me. (lar!) So for me, this falls somewhere in the "uncool" category.
My one year old made the same discovery the other day and was able to put the square shape in the shape sorter box. Different shapes have different sizes... Go figure!
UNCOOL in many ways. I like quartz pieces BUT when the second hand misses the second increment markers, it's a no no for me. Then there is the size. measuring diagonally is the correct way to measure the width of any watch. This one is far too wide at plus 50mm. The lugs are set far too low. Somewhere in the centre, or even better, just higher than centre is perfect. There will be a smooth transition from the crystal to the straps. Then there is the chronograph pushers. Also way too low, very off putting. Finally there is the shape. Not a fan of square watches even if it is a homage. The original Tag Monaco is also an ugly watch to me but it is made much better. I own a somewhat square shaped Seiko watch from 1979 which I consider a much better shape. Cheers for the review.
I personally have a casio AQ-230A (its both analog and digital, funky looking but also really cool and good size as well). I also have a seiko SUP880 (its a solar powered quartz but very good looking)
Cool. I have a soft spot for non-round watches: squares, rectangles, ovals, and so on. ;-} What would make it cold? Mecaquartz chronograph movement timing at least six hours--and I'd be willing to pay another fifty quid for that.
sadly, lorus go with a 3 subdial chronograph movement, but opticly aims to be a two subdial chronograph. that is a bit inconsistent. and makes the the minute subdials looks way out of place. also, but thats in a lot of chronographes on this pricerange: i realy dont like chronographes, with a big secondhand and the chronograph hand is on a subdial. the 1/20 subdial is also probably useless, regarding the reaction time of pushing a trigger (it can looks cool, if proper implemented like in a lot of Timex chronographes in the same pricerange). The overal look is ok. ben, you NEED a "meh" category between uncool and cool ;) because, as you said, this watch is "meh", not cool, but also not uncool, just.. meh
Not a bad looking watch but the square shape is deceiving....I noticed that when trying on a Monaco. The microbrand, EMG, makes a Monaco homage as well that looks decent.
A chronograph without minute markers? Not a fan, I realise they opted for it for aesthetic reasons but it isn't for me. I notice the price seems to have gone up. Uncool I'm afraid, although very close to cool
They could have made more of an effort inc. sapphire, price is low for what they could have gone with in spec and design. Colours just a big fail but i'm not adverse to dark blue... it's just not right for that massive square coupled with more of same blue on strap.
Once more, this one looks like the price has increased since filming (in the UK at least). I wouldn't spend more than about £60 on this piece guys

They could have made more of an effort inc. sapphire, price is low for what they could have gone with in spec and design. Colours just a big fail but i'm not adverse to dark blue... it's just not right for that massive square coupled with more of same blue on strap.
look The Orvis SQ Chronograph
Careful there Heisenberg
I like the looks, but the dimension is troublesome. I'd go with uncool for this one (sorry Lorus!)
Maybe it would've been a great piece if it was made by their bigger brother, Seiko.
I actually like this watch for what it is, but can I find one anywhere.......nope!
It does look huge. But I like it! 😎 cool
I gues its hip to be square?
