"The Jungle" is not America or any city in America. "The Jungle" is L.A. or "Los Angeles" city of angels because there the drugs will take down each new arrival and for the girls they will get the drugs because men want to use them. Axel steps off the bus and sees the craziness of it all right away on the screens on the street and later he is watching over ten screens at the same time while all around him are going for sex and drugs. He is completely on drugs zoneed out while others are working on their game with the opposite sex. The guy getting off the bus at the end represents the next idiot arrival into "The Jungle" of L.A. and he sees Axel singing as if he is making it in L.A. and Axel screaming his head off in a straight jacket of a mental institution as he's also losing his mind as he's been there too long. The guy shakes his head as it's all new to him, but the point is he won't be the same before long and will find it all normal soon enough.
This song was written about Axle’s impression of coming to LA for the first time. He was shocked by the availability of sex , drugs and other vices and the crime. The Jungle is specifically Los Angeles but can be about any fast paced city around the world.
This entire album is the reason why I became a musician. It really changed my life in a huge way. And to see you reacting to this song the way you did really reminds me of those times 😃
In an interview, Axl Rose claimed the lyrics were inspired by an encounter he and a friend had with a homeless man while they were coming out of a bus into New York City. Trying to put a scare into the young runaways, the man yelled at them, "You know where you are? You're in the jungle baby; you're gonna die!" "It was a very telling lyric - just the stark honesty of it," said Slash. "If you lived in Los Angeles - and lived in the trenches, so to speak - you could relate to it."
I always pictured the song as describing Axl coming to Los Angeles from Indiana. Depending on where one goes in Los Angeles, I would imagine one might find the experience similar to what Axl did.
A great way to start off the record, it's like they are saying welcome to our madness you are going to die. I listened to this song a million times I never knew the meaning behind it. I guess they are singing about the world of the 80's and what was going on in that time which makes sense. Love the song, it's awesome!
Live clip from 1992 of GNR performing 'Welcome to the jungle': ua-cam.com/video/0ihXMhcQ6pE/v-deo.html The inspiration of the song came from Axl Rose (vocals) arriving in Los Angeles in the 80's w/ his dream of joining a rock band and becoming a rock star... Axl got off the bus and a homeless guy told him, "Welcome to the jungle, baby! U gonna die!" Axl was born William Bailey, and was raised in a strict Christian household, where he was abused physically and sexually as a minor... He was from the state of Indiana, which was Midwest conservative America and he hated where he was at...He went to church as a child, but his upbringing was difficult... As a result, he was always in trouble w/ Indiana police as a teenager and had been arrested multiple times... Finally, he was kicked out of the house, so he had a friend who went to L.A. to become a rock star... he decided to join him. That friend was Guns guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who also came from a broken home in Indiana and wanted to escape. It took a month for Axl to locate Izzy, living on the streets of L.A. and Hollywood, which were filled w/ drug dealers, hookers, pimps and hustlers... The first band they formed together was Hollywood Rose.... then, the 2 joined the band L.A. Guns and renamed it Guns N' Roses in 1985... Slash joined about a year later after Axl fired founding guitarist Tracii Guns.

I still remember when I saw that song video on MTV back in 1990 it took me by surprise, at the time I was into 70's Hard Rock, not into Metal or anything related at the time and lived that crazy time in 1991-92 when GN'R, Metallica, Nirvana and Pearl Jam taked on the world and changed the music business.
Just love the way you bust a move in this reaction Bisscute! Of my top bands in the late 80's. Welcome to the Jungle is a about the harsh, lawless environment of big city life. More specifically Axl was referring to Los Angeles, California. Where many people migrate to in search of fame and fortune. And that a lot of times you don't get them for free.
Los Angeles was a volatile environment for musicians playing there at the time..they had to sell their own tickets..so battles were fought and losses mounted for those trying to make it..that time is perfectly captured in this vid
There used to be a term to describe cities that is no longer in use: Urban Jungles. GNR actually wrote a few songs about the subject. This was one and two others I can think of were "The Garden" and "Garden of Eden". But, yeah, this one. This was the first song/music video they released. To say this blew everyone away would be an understatement. The album this is off of, Appetite For Destruction, sold 30 MILLION copies and at least half that number is entirely because of this one song alone.
Not a huge Guns fans, but I remember when this came out how different and muscular it sounded, in my opinion remains one of the best sounding rock albums of all time

Lots of them step off the bus or plane from the US Midwest to seek their fortune or a good time in LA, but it can be very scary for them.
the Jungle he is referring to is the Concrete Jungle,..full of predators..back in the day there was a club on Sunset blvd. called the Seven Seas, and the boys used to play there at least once a month..and you couldn't tell the girls from the boys from behind..because they all had an entire can of hairspray in their hair....but I would listen to them sing sunday morning hang over songs in the morning at Bobby's rehearsal studio called Mates...and yes, damn..i'm 60 yrs old now...
He exits the buss in the big city, with a straw in his mouth, sees a woman dressed in a way unusual to him, and the song starts. He's in the jungle (L.A.)
Axl said in an interview that when he first stepped off the bus after arriving in LA, a homeless man looked at him and said.... "Welcome to the jungle, baby... you gonna die" LA is definitely a wild, scary place. lol

A lot of big cities are called the concrete jungle.
it should be the best debut song in the history
the Jungle he is referring to is the Concrete Jungle,..full of predators..back in the day there was a club on Sunset blvd. called the Seven Seas, and the boys used to play there at least once a month..and you couldn't tell the girls from the boys from behind..because they all had an entire can of hairspray in their hair....but I would listen to them sing sunday morning hang over songs in the morning at Bobby's rehearsal studio called Mates...and yes, damn..i'm 60 yrs old now...

Interesting fact about Axl Rose: he has seven nephews but only one shananananana niece
Axl said in an interview that when he first stepped off the bus after arriving in LA, a homeless man looked at him and said.... "Welcome to the jungle, baby... you gonna die" LA is definitely a wild, scary place. lol
