    Back in the day Jerry Lawler was a well respected wrestler. Memphis Wrestling in the day was as good as any wrestling you ever seen. And i miss it.

    Worked or not, when you put in all the time that these guys and gals put in, it's pretty rewarding when you realize the promoter and people in charge of story line's value you enough to make you the #1 performer. All the struggles you go through trying to get a break in the business, all the political bullshit you have to deal, the miles, aches and pains, paying your dues, etc. Jerry was the heart and soul of Tennessee pro wrestling in that era and it was well deserved for him to get that AWA championship.

    Absolute Gentleman JERRY LAWLER was a great wrestler per excellence. His tenacity and nearly impossible win in this match bring out the desire for success in true professional wrestling, giving in all. Lessons learnt.

    Lawler was the man in Memphis wrestling. In the wwf/wwe they made him a joke. He never won a title or a big match. Wrestling hasn't been good since about '95.

    When I watched Lawler and Lance Russell, Bill Dundee they were with the NWA whats he doing in the AWA that was the North East the Macho man was on the AWA ?

      Sometime during the 80’s, the CWA either broke away from the NWA or was dropped. They ended up becoming part of the AWA. I remember Lawler wrestling Nick Bockwinkle for the AWA World title. Hogan left the AWA for the WWF because Verne wouldn’t take the title off Bockwinkle for him to be the AWA World Champion.

    • @ericthomas917

      Lawler wrestled the NWA champion and the AWA champion a lot. One time AWA champion Nick Bockwinkel beat Lawler for the Southern belt (which was the top challenger for the AWA and NWA titles in Memphis) and then said he was gonna face Ric Flair for the NWA belt, not put the AWA belt up at all, and move the match from Memphis to California because he didn't want to wrestle Flair in Memphis. The match didn't happen.

    I'm confused though....
    Lawler won the belt before in 1979, so i think this is his second reign.
    I'm not sure though.

    That belt wasn't worth much in 1988. The AWA was pretty much dead at this point

      Shawn Kinser ... Sadly your right. I always thought AWA should have merged with the NWA and had a unification match with him and Flair.
      That would have been great.

      This was an attempt to put AWA back in the big picture. Lawler had everything it took but the machine was WWF at the time. Hennig would take off to WWF just a few months later.

    So how does this work ? How do you when a word tittle in a fake fight?

    • @stevemtc1
      @stevemtc1 5 років тому +2

      Shane Marbry it’s All about promotional fun who gets the push but there’s a lot that goes into decisions who and wind the matches how for how long. It’s not a fake fight so much because inside the ring that’s only 10 % of the industry. It takes talent if you don’t not only to sell tickets but in the booking. You have to be able for twenty thirty minutes throw a 275 pound man around and make it look good
