    It’s a testimonial to Jerry Lawler’s skills, to be such a good heel and baby face. He could play either, but excel at both.

    I'm old enough to remember Lawler with manager Sam Bass. Remember the car accident. I also remember thinking to myself that Lawler was going to be a superstar. Thank you Jerry for building the house in Memphis.

    The AWA SHOULD have realized the BEST WAY to stay strong once Vince started his assualt was to make their bond with Memphis STRONGER!!! Even though Verne still had a very good roster from 84-86, the AWA's product seemed BLAND in comparison to the other promotions. Memphis would have added needed sizzle, some great creative minds in Jarrett and Lawler, AND more talent to add to the AWA. I'm NOT SAYING they should have merged necessarily. BUT at the same time come across as one huge company on TV.
    In 1988, Verne FINALLY put the belt on Lawler. But AT THAT POINT, Memphis was doing MORE for the AWA than the AWA was doing for Memphis. AWA was going downhill fast in 1988. Due to the fact they had national TV on ESPN, their fall from grace was MORE NOTICEABLE than other territories. IN 1988,Memphis was still very good. And more enjoyable to watch. They just weren't on a national stage.
    But in the mid 80's, AWA still had a loaded roster. Memphis did too. Bringing them TOGETHER to counteract WWF and JCP would have been a great move. Lawler, Savage, and Idol had the IT FACTOR to be AWA World Champ in 1984-1985. Instead of putting that belt on Martel, Verne SHOULD HAVE put the belt on one of those three.
    Because with the national wrestling boom, u had Hogan and Flair as the world champs of the other companies. AWA needed stars in their 30's with charisma and IT factor holding their strap at that point. Bock had the tools in the AWA world. BUT he was in his late 40's and at the end of his career.

      You, Sir, make a veritable LOAD of great points! Too bad that the AWA didn't either acknowledge or push for a full unification of the two Wrestling Organizations. It would've been able, at least for a long time, to withstand the onslaught of the Then-WWF. In our days, we've seen things spiral completely out of control, first with Vince McMahon buying out top competitors from all of the then-known Wrestling Organizations. The AWA and CWA (later known as the USWA, then POWER PRO WRESTLING), weren't the only ones that Vince went after. I know, though, that Hulk Hogan went from the AWA to the Then-WWF, but in his case, that was to be expected, because, as we all know, Hogan is all about them Greenbacks! Anyway-as Vince McMahon continued to buy the premium Wrestlers from all of these companies, the Wrestling Product, as a whole, began to figuratively rot away, as Wrestler after Wrestler got the sniff of the Money from Vince burned into their brain. What was left of the smaller Wrestling Organizations began to crumble under the pressure of not having it's top Wrestlers around anymore, and then, as these smaller Wrestling Organizations began to lose the fans that had long supported them, the Money that they used to get dried up. I still remember reading, within the past 1-2 days, that an event that what used to be the USWA (& this may have happened during their final phase as Power Pro Wrestling), thought that they had a decent enough Wrestling Card, in order to draw Wrestling Fans. What happened? In a Coliseum that was able to seat something like at least 10,000 people, only something like 370+ People even bothered to show up. To me, not only is that embarrassing, but it spelled the proverbial Death Knell for that Wrestling Organization. Now, as I look at what WWE has had happen to them, what with WWE having been turned,at least for the time being, into a Virtual Viewing Affair, and with seeing the viewing on TV being at an all-time low, I can only think that finally, Vince McMahon is getting what he deserves!!!

    I wish territorial promotions like this one could make a comeback. I was happy for Jerry Lawler for winning the AWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1988. The AWA wanted to crown Greg Gagne as their World champion. Sorry Stanley Blackburn and Verne Gagne. But Greg was known to be a tag team wrestler. And he couldn't get out of the shadow of his famous father. Despite the controversy of wrestlers not being paid for the Superclash 3 card they participated in, Jerry Lawler should have remained the AWA champion.

      Verne Gagne was notoriously crooked. He could have kept tge AWA alive for much longer with Lawler as champion.

    What a shame Vince McMahon threw pro-wrestling into the dumpster.
    It was much better when everyone believed in its' authenticity.
    I mean, a real press conference ! Can you imagine such a thing today. Sadly not.

    Great moment, BUT, it was NOT The 10 Pounds Of Gold! The American Wrestling Association was a fine Promotion....but The National Wrestling Alliance will always be the Bench Mark for A World Heavyweight Champion. Even the Great Bruno Sammartino of WWWF Fame and later The WWF and now WWE said that Tradition is important to a sport...and The NWA is the Longest running Tradition in Professional Wrestling....bar none!

      Nothing against Jerry Lawler, but the AWA was a dying promotion by 1988.The AWA championship belt paled in comparison to the NWA or WWF championship.

      In the 80s that belt held itsvon with n.w.a., and better than w.w.f., before it went circus crazy

      @jameschilders7423 2 роки тому

      Sorry, in the 80s the a.w.a. was better than the w.w.f. period, until Vince figured out how to change it to a circus, if had not been for the n.w.a., and local areas, I might have never spent 20 years wrestling in the independent circuit. That's ric, dusty boogie, and all those greats, just to many to name!

      @@jameschilders7423 Even in '88, the AWA title was defended more in a month than the WWF was in the entire year. In a larger area, and internationally as well, unlike the WWF title, which was still defended regionally.
