  • From 1986 to 1991, I (Ted Tarris, aka Hella-Ted, Heavy Metal Ted, and later on in my Flipside fanzine days, Drunk Ted) had a metal radio show on KSDT which was located on the campus of University Of CA, San Diego. I played album tracks, interviews, demos, and showcased new metal bands at the time like Coroner, Fates Warning, Celtic Frost, Voivod, Testament, Death Angel and hundreds of others. I am forever indebted to Dave Mustaine because the interview he did, gave me the confidence to keep doing this. I've probably interviewed over a hundred bands in the metal and punk scenes, including all those mentioned above (some several times).
This interview with Dave Mustaine was actually my first interview. I was 19 and probably a little buzzed on some beer. So it may not be the most professional (I was such a horrible kiss-ass), but Dave was incredibly generous to sit down with me for over half an hour to share his thoughts at the time. It was recorded after Megadeth played the Adams Avenue Theater in San Diego. March 21st, 1986. The Mentors opened the show.
Much of this is old history now that 37 years has passed, but one of the revelations given (at 19:40) is that Dave says that he heard secondhand from Lars that Metallica was originally thinking of James just being a frontman, Dave playing rhythm, and Kirk on lead guitar. If true, it shows that Metallica was interested in Kirk Hammett when Dave was still in the band. Don't know how true this is, but it's here on tape.
