After going through so much shit in his childhood and younger years... Dave really pulled himself together. Not only is he a great musician, but he is a great dad, husband, and human being.
You don't know them that way. And frankly, peeking into Dave's marriage is kinda creepy. Just because he's famous doesn't mean his private life is your business.

Most people would just fade away after been ousted from a band like Metallica. But Dave Mustaine is not just another musician. By sheer willpower and mental strenght Dave was able to form a band to rival and to some be even better than his former band. Dave Mustaine is a King among men.
This interview and the Kirk Hammett interview are two of the best interviews I've ever seen. From the photos to the "un-typical" stories, these interviews are actually interesting! Nice job Gibson.
It's a great series, no doubt! The Bob Rock one was pretty insightful also. Really liked Iommi's too. There's a real attention to detail and focus on going deeper and avoiding too much ground covered in previous interviews
Andrew Joseph, you so got it right. I’m currently watching Dave’s and viewed Kirk Hammett’s one boot too long back. I agree with you when it comes to interesting.
I met Dave at Download Festival 2005. He is a really nice man. I remember it was after the gig and I was sweaty after the pit and I told him 'sorry I'm sweaty i've been in the pit' and he grabbed my shoulder and pulled me in for a photo. Cool guy.
I have to say this is probably the best interview I have ever heard Dave give. He´s older, more mature, a liiiiitle bit more modest and probably a bit wiser too. Great stuff!
Dave is royalty amongst the metal elites. His chops are fantastic and his legacy will be remembered long after UA-cam becomes the equivalent of the phonograph. Thanks Dave, and Gibson, for this video.
1st time I saw Megadeth live I was 19 at Freeman Coliseum here in San Antonio, TX. It was a small venue not many peeps showed up, about 400. The front rows that were normally reserved were empty so I strolled up and got to watch Dave shred at a distance of about 6 feet away. His live solo's changed my life for the better. 🤘🤘
When Dave said he wanted his music to make people feel liberated is a perfect analogy. The Megadeth shows I've seen through the years demonstrates that perfectly, as most fans are feeling it from their toenails to the ends of their hair. To sum it up... Dave's is a legacy of liberation. Bravo.

What I like about this video is listening to Dave voice. He just wins battle with cancer and seeing him in this condition makes me happy. Too many rock star haven't survive their substance abuse and seeing Dave, not only alive, but still making heavy music is just incredible.
Dave and Bruce Dickinson man. Both beating oral/throat type cancers at an older age, and then both still proceeding to make, not the best albums of their careers, but albums with some absolute banger songs that harken back to their heyday and would've fit in just fine on some of their greatest records is monumental. And then both still touring and putting on killer shows.
@@twiggsherman3641 its really not a negative comment at all. its great to love urself and the way the dude put it seams totally on that positive side, hmm. granted dave is also funny the way he does go over that love into an egoic way of self praise, so his comment makes even more sense cuz so. it ain't too bad of a thing to have besides you won't see all sides to everything..
Dave, after all these years, is still my hero because he presents as a man, with his frailty, his flaws, but with a relentless drive to go forward, like pulled by an invisible force. He is a mere man and a legend as well. Long live Dave Mustaine.
Dave mustaine is an absolute soldier of a man, a great guitarist. He gets flack for his singing but has such an interesting sense of melody on songs, his voice works perfectly on songs like peace sells, tornado of souls, in my darkest hour, sweatin bullets and so on
I agree. The Countdown to Extinction album is still one of my favorites. Hangar 18 is still probably my favorite. Holy Wars; SoD main stream? Yeah, somewhat. A good listen through? F×$kin A Right. I love it. Louder Than Life...For real, let's go!
I’m glad Mustaine chose not to talk bad about his former band mates rather than address their conflicts. Those topics have already been broadly answered by Mustaine, and those involved, in other interviews. The series is focused primarily on allowing these guitar players to talk about their life and careers in the context of now, not a full scope biography. All those involved in Megadeth played a part in making the band what it is today.
So many people hate on Dave and ive never got it ...he writes with his heart and god damn you cannot take away his genius ..he is the riff master general and allways will be ,first time i heard wake up dead 33 years ago it gave me goosebumps...good on ya Dave.
Okay, okay I like Megadeath a lot I even like Dave and think this interview is awesome. However you never “got” why people hate Dave Mustang. Dudes been know for acting like a dickhead for a lonnnnng time. Looks like he has pulled himself up here and let alot of that go but anyone can at least understand why people hate Dave. Once again not saying I do but I totally understand why people do.
Nobody has meant more to me musically than Dave Mustaine. His music saw me through a tough adolescence, inspired me to pick up the guitar and write songs. This was epic. Thank you Gibson!
Saw Megadeth a few weeks ago and i've been a big fan of Dave and Megadeth but seeing them live and seeing Dave rock out and not miss a note..plus sing my mind was blown. I'm glad he got the fame he deserves. This man is a genius in his own respect.
Back in the mid 90s a friend of mine had a neck thru epiphone V with the explorer headstock on it and a Kahler Trem. It was a metallica black finish and for years I've tried to find out what model it was but haven't had much luck. Always liked the look of it.
Right? Though Poland is still on of the best players to ever be in a "thrash metal " band. But Dragons Kiss was my favorite guitar album at the time. Both Becker and Martys solos albums but Dragons Kiss really spoke to me most stylistically he was like the next level of all the phrygian melodic minor type stuff i lived and breathed. And i was saying at the time man if these guys got into a proper top tier thrash band it would be insane, it would change the game immeasurably. Well Megadeth happened to be my favorite all around band at the time so when he joined them i knew it was probably going to be historical foot note in metal.
@@michals5737 huh? he's one the best to ever do it. one of the most original in the genre of rock/metal by far. the best of the best. in the class of the greatest of the greats. i would base that on Dragons Kiss and Scenes alone. Let alone his work in Megadeth.
@@chickenbeek he has made few brilliant solos on the rust in peace album but thats not enough to call him 'one of the best' he has not done anything relevant after breaking up with megadeth, did not pursue any kind of successful solo career also, his songwriting credits were actually quite low in megadeth
The literal peak example of it. He had nothing and he knew that people in his situation end up dead at an early age. He kept pushing, finding motivation, and in the end he found happiness.
@@Lightwarriorwisdom777 Sadly tis true. Countdown to Extinction and Risk are great albums. They have “hooks” which is the word most thrash purists call “sellout,”.

I didn't expect to watch the whole piece in one go, but just couldn't pause it. Great storyteller with an interesting lifestory. So happy he overcame cancer and all the other challenges - takes a helluva character.
Dave seems like such a nice, level headed and personable guy. He's really been through a lot and he's grown so much, and has so many stories to tell. I can tell he'll make a fantastic grand dad! Wish I could give him a hug. Great interview!
I've never seen a live concert clip or on the spot, not planned like this, video where I would ever think of Dave as being "nice" but if he is now, then good for him
I just have to say… this man is an example of resilience, persistence and a total metal icon through and trough. Came out of nothing with talent, hardworking and because of that we admire and love him. Thank you, Dave for all your service and beautiful music throughout all of our lives.
Same here! Back in the day, I really loved Anthrax and Metallica, and for some reason Slayer and Megadeth slipped by the wayside. @@tonym3308 I think you will find my friend, Venom(we are not worthy) created their own brand of metal and they called it Black Metal. It was a lot more bossy than thrash and sounded more like a teutonic blast.
This is Smithsonian level quality doc on Dave. Hopefully, this will be around for decades in some form. Dave is a lynch pin to a big evolution in music form. It's the same vibe as watching something on Tony Alva and realizing what he did for skateboarding.
Gotta admire Mustaine - he is the same as he was when i first heard him way back when... rough, brutal and honest. Some people change over time and become douchbags. It is good to listen to people that know who they are and remain the same - he is a total legend.
I didn't expect this but I was nailed to my chair eyes to the screen start to finish. Haven't happened to me for decades. P.s. For me Dave is the best metal rhythm guitarist ever. There is no other guitarist able to play such complicated riffs while singing. Not even James.
@@henrywalton5967 Heard 3 live songs out of curiosity. No. No complexity while he is singing. Also not actually singing like Mustaine does (or at least tries to). Mustaine sings on top of complex time signatures without his voice just following/flowing with the guitar but keeping its own time signature or pace. Its very very hard to make your brain work with 2 different time signatures at the same time especially when you add technical complexity to the mix. Not impossible of course, there are street musicians who can play 3 instruments at the same time. But it is very rare. DiSanto plays basic fast riffs (actually easier to sing along) and follows the guitar pace with his voice. Similar to what Mille Petrozza of Kreator does... but even then Petrozza plays some more complex riffs while he sings. No. No-one (in metal) is even close to the level of Mustaine.
@@granthooper2329 I know that. I just said what he is best at. The best at metal rhythm guitar. I still love his solos but there is none like him at rhythm guitar.

Cool guy.
Lucky. That’s so very cool.
I have to say this is probably the best interview I have ever heard Dave give. He´s older, more mature, a liiiiitle bit more modest and probably a bit wiser too. Great stuff!
Yeah, good on Gibson for just keeping it quiet and focused on Dave for as long as needed to tell these stories. Just fantastic.
Bravo.
Gibson knockin’ it out of the park with their roster lately. These “Icon” films are kickass and very well done. Oh, and Dave’s not bad either. 🤘🏻

P.s. For me Dave is the best metal rhythm guitarist ever. There is no other guitarist able to play such complicated riffs while singing. Not even James.
Honestly I felt the same way until I saw videos of David DiSanto playing in Vektor. Very complex and fast riffs whilst singing.
