Horse hair is actually very good hair for brushes 😂 I'm an Equestrian and I ride horses. And since my father has his own painting company his brushes are horse hair. *no horses were injured in the making of the brushes*
Please take this with a grain of salt because i don’t have too much experience with sumi but when I swing the traditional Japanese brush, I usually wet the brush first so the weird hard parts go away(???) Also the loop on the end of the brush is used to hang the brush when drying so it can keep its shape. The last thing is the thin brush (like the one you got) is used to write names and to do art.
it’s super cute how you talk about the poor horses hair😂 usually if a horses tail gets past it’s fetlocks we have to trim it so they won’t trip on it... that wouldn’t be good... I’ll have to look into how you could donate horse hair to art companies or something! How cool would that be?!
Sumie brushes are covered in wax to protect them, you have to wash the tip before using them, you almost destroyed it hahahahahaha. As a sumie and shuimohua student, it totally made me cringe 😂😂 not your fault anyways, they should have included some kind of explanation. Love your videos and everything you do ❤ that cat is GORGEOUS

Sagwa! One of my favorite shows when I was a kid.. and no lie, watching you test the brush made me think of Sagwa before you mentioned it. 😁 Love this video!
I used to take Japanese in school for about 6 years, and my teacher taught us how to use the ink and calligraphy brushes. It's really interesting, to learn the different techniquees used to make different strokes, they teach children by using strokes to create shapes into pictures if that makes sense. So like the long, boxy strokes we would learn by painting bamboo stems, and the feather or leaf-shaped strokes we would paint the leaves, and we would learn the little approstrophe-like strokes by painting flowers. It was really fun! Some people dedicate an enormous amount of time and discipline to learning traditional calligraphy, and a lot of emphasis is placed on stroke order, or what order to place each line. I know that was a bit of a rant, but this was awesome to see a box being dedicated to it!
Turtlie actually 了 is one of the hardest chinese characters to explain what it means/how it’s used. It can be used to indicate that something happened in the past, but it can also be used after adjectives for emphasis and after verbs to mean different things, not just past tense. For example 吃饭了 doesn’t mean “already ate” but instead it means something along the lines of “let’s eat/come eat”. 了 is a pretty ubiquitous character.
6:37 I like that you did the price breakdown of the individual items. I've said it before, but maybe on another video, these boxes should have a link or information of the products they are sending. I remember the vellum problem I saw in a few art box videos ( people were using the wrong side). Isnt the point of these art boxes to expand peoples artistic use? Give them a few tips, don't just throw items in a box and mail them off. I should probably be telling this to the art companies, and not my fav youtuber artist. Love the show.

Sagwa the Chinese Cat just unearthed my deepest childhood memories and now I'm crying ??? no one in my family even remembers Sagwa but I'd watch that show every day, I even had it taped on vhs tapes so I could see my favorite episodes over and over again the drawing is amazing, you're such an inspiration (esp the way you draw cats??? like oh my god theyre precious beans) keep up ur amazing work!!!
Having met and taken a short group lesson from someone who studied sumi-e from a master, it was so cool to see how the tools were used by someone who didn't know. I've admired the traditional beauty of this art, but I have to say I love what you came up with just as much!
With these kind of pens..being calm and patient and mainly confident can help the drawing give by smoothly. Just go with the flow and everything can turn out great! 😊👍🏼
Why no one washes the brush before useing😂😭😭😭 Thats why its crappy . Cuz you dont wash it. Cuz that brush its with a layer of cornstarch so it stays stiff

I love Sumi painting! It definitely takes a lot of practice and such. Bamboo painting is really fun. And you add water to make different saturations of color. Like a gradient of grays/blacks

Your drawing kinda reminds me of a book that I had as a kid. It was about a cat that was white and then knocked over a little pot of ink and got it all over itself. It was a take on how the first Siamese cat was created. I love your art by the way. The style is very cartoon like but still realistic and I like how you successfully took those two things and made them work together.

i love using ink and horse hair brushes! it reminds me of when my grandma helped me to write in mandarin with ink when i was little. ahhhh memories.
