I moved to Florida two years ago because my whole family moved here. I didn’t want to be far away from them for health reasons. The heat is unbearable in the summer. I never thought I’d say this but sometimes I miss shoveling snow. I miss the changes in seasons.

I miss the Florida of my youth. I miss the Miami Beach that was so relaxed and affordable. Yes, it was the retirement capital of the country but that is why it was great.

Sarasota, Venice, Bradenton, Palmetto, Parrish were very pleasant and delightful towns. Things began to change in the mid to late 90's with new development east of I-75. Super popular Lakewood Ranch outpaced their development plan by 2 decades with single family homes. Now there are endless multi-family apartment projects popping up all over too. But, there have not been any major road infrastructure improvements to handle the massive increase in vehicle traffic and what is yet to come. So the area is mired in Miami like traffic. This definitely has very negatively impacted the quality of life. Plus the home prices have skyrocketed. So yeah, it's not the Florida I knew coming up and definitely not where we plan to spend our retirement regretfully. Shedding a tear for what's been lost!

My wife and I live in WNY. We come down every year for a month or two. Usually to Sanabel, but that still isn't rebuilt yet. We rented this past March in St, Augustine. Different weather on the Atlantic side for sure. I could never live in Florida, too hot for too long and the traffic is crazy. We get a couple snowstorms, but no hurricanes, no tornados, rarely a severe thunderstorm, never more than two inches of rain, house is paid for. See you in March.🙂

I've lived in Fl for 43 years. Moved from S Fl to C Fl, lived in Ormond Beach for 35 years until traffic, noise, and people became unbearable. 13 months ago I moved to a N Fl. rural panhandle town. I'm happy to be where people say hello to each other, etc...
I love it here, it's like C Fl used to be, but much colder in the winter.
The other reason I moved here is, so I can actually leave if there is an evacuation. I'm 15 mins from 75 and then another 10 mins to 10, and I'm out of Fl. There are so many people here now that it will be impossible to get out of S Fl. C Fl.

This is a very realistic and honest view of life in Florida. I had so many wonderful vacations in Florida in the ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90,s, but never want to go there again and taint those great memories. Not having income tax is not worth paying $6,000 for homeowners insurance. I’ve heard property taxes are absolutely crazy, as well.

  • @dougparson4407

Old Florida was Great and why we wanted to live herr and could afford to live down here. New Florida Sucks. The weather and no state income tax are the best reasons to stay however property taxes have gotten to high. Some of the florida laws Desantis has out into place helps us want to stay here. A nice 3br house near the gulf coast will cost me around $900k now. I can buy a similar home in Indiana for $150k and my homeowners insurance will be 1/3rd the cost compared to Florida. Retired people can live in the midwest cheap and travel to Asia or South America for the winter and vacation much cheaper than a winter vacation in Florida. People have a lot of options these days !!

All great points. I purchased in Venice a little over 3 yrs ago and since then this small area has transformed significantly. Manasota, Blind Pass, Englewood, and Stump Pass beaches were all easy to visit and park. Now…, you’re lucky to find a parking spot at times! That said, most visiting the beaches are vacationing. So, most of the beach population is transient and not full timers. But, the beautiful thing is…., spring here starts in December and runs through April! You can be outside every day during those very grey and cold months up north. So…, it’s all worth it for me!😀

Very well presented and accurate. I first lived in St Pete in 1968, Sarasota in 1972 and Orlando in 1989. Worked in Michigan until 2018. Was planing to return to Florida but the value proposition in Florida is gone. We visit Florida a couple times per year but Michigan is so much better when you compare health care, ease of travel and overall a lower cost of living. But it snows in the winter. Can't have it both ways

We moved out of state from Daytona after 54 years. Final straw was when insurance company emailed that they went under 10 days after I mailed the one year premium. All the reasons you listed are very real. The changes in lifestyle were so gradual I didn't realize that my errands were planned around time of year and day. It took weeks of waiting through 3 light changes just to get over the bridge for me to decide it's time to maybe move to Ocala but the struggle to find insurance by raising the deductible did it.

    Lisa,
I was planning to move full time to FL. My son is in Pt.St.Lacey and I lived in Palm Beach Gardens. The reason I never could stay all the time was due to it being so hard to make a living in my field. So for the last 50 years I would drive back and forth between so Fl and NY, NJ, and PA with the plan of staying in FL when I was ready for retirement. As for now that plan is scraped. I am very disappointed economics has created a barrier.

    Traffic is bad everywhere.
It is not the expense of the homes in FLA, they are expensive everywhere near the water. The problem is the taxes and insurance, it puts pressure on home owner fees by increasing the master insurance for the community. Car insurance is very expensive in Florida and property insurance is hard to get. Our Villa near Anna Maria is going on the market this week and we are buying in coastal Delaware. We love it in FL but too expensive.
    FL Taxes $5500 HOA $835 Ins $3800 Car Ins 750 a month

Moved to Palm Coast last fall. Home prices here are still pretty reasonable if you're not by the beach or on a canal. $325,000 to $425,000. Plus it's not a tourism hot spot so it's mostly locals all the time. Daytona to the south and St. Augustine to the North gets those. Love it here. Only time traffic is kind of heavy is when school gets out to about 6PM. I think there are still mellow places in Florida if you do a little homework. But it is growing fast - new construction everywhere (and transplants like me are driving it).

0:03 Oh, if you could have been here when Palm Coast didn't have hardly any traffic. Those were the good days. It used to a hidden gem, but not anymore. It used to have nice people here,, but the people who have migrated here have came with bad attitudes and aggressive behavior that we aren't used to. We will be selling our home soon because of the very issue Lisa spoke about. It's sad what's happening to Florida.

    • @jeffmorse645

@@jay-lamont I hope you find a place more to your liking. I've never noticed the people not being nice. I've seen a couple of "Karens" go off in stores at the employees. But all the people I've dealt with in businesses, doctor's offices, having things done on my home, etc... have been pretty nice. Knock on wood, I haven't had any bad situations driving around here either the six months I've been here. I will say this, regardless where you move it will change. That's inevitable. Nothing stays the same and I've found that the best way to avoid frustration or resentment is to try to adapt and roll with the punches.

I used to live on East Coast of Florida In the late 80's Its not the same anymore! I moved to north port last July from Connecticut and ive had it. My home tax has doubled from 2023 even with Homestead Exception and home and car insurance cost twice as much as Connecticut. Sure no State income tax but these costs zero that out and lets not talk about the right wing politics and banning books and taking a woman's rights away! Too Fascist for me.

And then of course you have all the migrant workers and West Palm Beach and up here in Stuart and all over Florida. It’s become so on affordable but the whole world is crappy at the moment because of, the Democrat frame of mind.

This story is everywhere.. nationwide!! Name a place and you will find a large population that thought the grass was greener in Utah, Idaho, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Carolinas, Georgia, or Tennessee as a start .go to Florida and find the place flooded w people who think, act, talk and spend money like the place they came from.. there is no such place!! Ask anyone from Denver, Austin or Nashville!! Florida is not laid back because it was everyone's goal to make the entire state look like a rap video shot in Miami!! And all that..less government is great sounds great until the government is planning for traffic, flooding, insurance crisis, wildfires and skyrocketing taxes and crumbling infrastructure as everyone from New York and Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey trips over themselves to get to the rare bagel place!! Florida is an absolute disaster..all the chill, redneck outdoors stuff is gone top to bottom, the government is even allowing the Keys and the Everglades to be over developmed. Governor who is against jobs, education, tourism and his own economy!! And a guy who is single handledly trying to kill Florida farming and ranching!! Get out or don't go..
