Cosmic Dark Matter actually... I did that in a phone interview. They wanted to know if I knew Client Server. I said of course, you have clients & you serve them.
Five years ago I was invited to job interview at this gaming company. CEO showed me their lovely building, fancy offices, the ping pong table (of course), tvs, kitchen, lazy bags, studios, chairs, lounges for "friendly time" etc. There was a talk about how developers stay late and how great times they have, and similar sh*t. Most developers were under 30, I was 42 at the time, single mom, without alimony, paying for all sh*t. When I asked for salary, it was, I kid you not, 300$ per month! Yes, in my country that is actually possible salary for developers, but even for Serbia, that is extremely small developers salary. I was like "I can't survive on that". But the ping pong table, lazy bags, friendly time... Dude, I am over 40, single mom, I don't effing want to have any friendly time with those kids at the office. I want to do the work in working hours, go home and effing live on salary. Neither of which I can. Needless to say, I found another job.

I have never really hanged out with "friends" either after I left on good terms either. Some did stay on social media afterwards but not long after they either removed me or became a ghost "friend" so they didn't really value me as a person just using me for their gain. There have been a few rare true friendships while the rest were just being fake to make it look like they were being a team player.

You make an extremely valid point about them wasting all that money on offices when they could definitely save millions of dollars just investing in computers for their employees and letting them work from home! (Hell even give them an initial budget for a home office. You know a desk, computer chair, speakers and other office supplies.) those savings could result in a huge wage increase for the employees and way more productivity from your employees. Especially if they are parents who don’t need to worry about childcare and can work around their own timeline thus creating higher quality work because they are relaxed and do it when the ideas strike instead of forcing things and not having stressful interruptions from bosses and coworkers. A good example. Your Stuck on a development problem or trying to fix a bug you found in the system and your really stressed. You decide to take a little break and take your dogo for a walk and get some fresh air then boom like a cramp letting go you think of the idea you need to fix the problem.
When have you worked for a business that Genuinely cared about its employees? I once worked for a family business, I wasn't part of the "actual" family so that was a thing for sure.
I once had a bestie at work. Initially we hated each other's guts but after about 2 years when her closest work friends left the org, we somehow became very close friends, even outside of work. I am a quiet introvert and she's a talkative extrovert so we were very unalike. Still, we were pretty much together 90%of the time while at work, and sat next to each other in the office. Bcos of her personality, she got into arguments with people at work every now and again, though nothing seemingly detrimental. One day, for some reason both of us still dont know to this day, we each received a letter from HR letting us know it was our last day. Same day, same time, out of nowhere. Though our organization had douchebags for bosses, I am almost certain that if I wasn't her bestie, I wouldn't have been fired, or at least not alongside her. 2 years after us getting fired and I now living in a different country, we are still very close friends to this day, now family friends. We've been through a lot together and I am grateful for our friendship. BUT, that experience definitely thought me to never have a close friend at work.
I've been denied an interview because I didn't have 7+ years experience in Angular 2+.....When I told them that if you find any of those candidates, they are liars because Angular 2 came out in Sept 2016, they said they would look into it.... Never got back to me

I know that you have some things against having to go to the workplace and would rather work from home, and in a past video of yours you said that something along the lines of "only those that want to work on location are those that want to talk to other people and does no work". I consider that to be a quite narrow view, because I have the priviliege to work from home almost everyday at my current job but I still go and work at location, mainly because I don't want my home to be a place where I work and should only be a place of resting for me. My other reasons is that I have a hard time concentrating if I work at home or sit at a café. Anyway, that's my oppinion. Cya on the next video.

Having a friend in the workplace is a real blessing. It is nice to have a person who can give you a second opinion regarding complex decisions. It is just good practice to have a good, approachable relation with all colleagues and get to know them as people. The truth is the most important thing. If you know the truth on a certain situation/ project/ customer you can make the right decisions for everyone involved. These things are really basic, every time someone tries to 'promote' them, they will screw up. It is a lot like trying to explain a joke. A good company culture is not promoted, it is shown. Lead by example and embrace the strengths in your behavior, not in LinkedIn philosophy. It is great to have a nice office you come to and bring your visitors to. No need to overdo it, but a company has to have a building people can come to - it shows the company to the outside. I agree some people go over the top here. If things feel artificial or fake, the situation is worse than you think.
I one time got a book from the CEO of the company. I told him I read it all and got the job. 😂What a terrible job that was. It worked as my first dev job though

Trust me in corporate business there are no “friends” there’s friendly colleagues but they aren’t your friends. It’s not like your life depends on each other like a fire fighter or police officer or you work in construction and you’re from the sane neighborhood but no trust me the ones you think that are your friends will cut your throat in a heart beat if they can excel in their position or make themselves known to the boss. So when you arrive at the office and they want to “talk” to you that means one of your so called friends has narced on you and you’ll find yourself fighting off BS hyped up lies they’ve told about you.

Office is definitely not a good place for friendship. There are conflict of interest and politics and sociopath to deal with. Church or meet up or interest group is a much better environment to make friends.
Actually, the hackathon part, if students are involved, can be a reward to many people with teaching skills or other of some sort. It's nice to see students challenging themselves to create a new product. Many hackathons are used as recruitment events. For instance, I got into the entrepreneurship due to such an event. They can be literally life-changing.
Hey Josh, what do you think of the idea that these corporate novelty and luxury set ups are an attempt to control the job prospects of employees at an internal level. Where not only are they controlling your social life by trying to keep you in office 24/7, but also purposefully distracting and undermining staff for the sake of maintaining a less skilled and therefor less demanding employee base. It’s likely that using this model in a work environment which is even slightly competitive, will in its initial processes make those who are likely to excel stand out instantly for quick promotions in a fast growing company. While in the later stages and serialization of a company, will highlight the hardworkers who may at some point and time be demanding raises for their elevated proficiency and should therefore be fired so the standard mediocrity of much larger companies can be maintained?
You can be sad for leaving some coworkers and you may miss something from a job that you leave. That doesn’t mean you’re regretting your decision or that you don’t feel happy about getting more pay or growing your career by changing to another company.

Work is the worst place to make friends. Church is second.
On the "find the developer" bit, I figured it was the guy on our left, waaaay in the back at the computers, actually trying to get some work done. 😂
I think there are more devs there. They are the ones that are not smiling.
You make an adorable old man, Josh.
My dream job is either working from home, or somewhere I don’t have to see anyone all day.

I need to develop an AR program that will make all cubicles look like closed-space offices. Also virtual ping pong tables will be lit.

"Asshole pills" LOL! Great vid Josh! :D
It's nice to see grandfather and grandson have same personality.
You can be sad for leaving some coworkers and you may miss something from a job that you leave. That doesn’t mean you’re regretting your decision or that you don’t feel happy about getting more pay or growing your career by changing to another company.
