I worked for a company where a new employee died in a car accident the night before. And they announced that he died during our morning meeting there were people pretending to be distraught. The manager then said that his position is open and if they want to recommend anyone to send a resume over...like the dude died, and with the same announcement of his death they announced his job posting. That showed me that I'm nothing to these people, just a number.

The prevailing wisdom is to "never badmouth your previous company". Those people know that if they keep it real, then the next employer will see those messages and think they are "not a team player" and it'll hurt their career. This is what makes LinkedIn so bad. No one is honest, because honesty hurts your career.

I had a friend in college who was the queen of kissing arse. She was always bombarding professors (and friends) with flattery and praise. When I watched her, I knew the only way she could be more pathetic was if she actually knelt down and planted a wet one on their trousers. She's the kind of person who would write this rubbish after being laid off.
Thanks to her, I can tell you exactly why people write these absurd things. They want to look good to anyone checking out their profile when they apply for a new job. They want to make it clear to hiring managers that they'll kiss arse, wash bosses car, lay down and be used as a rug, whatever it takes to be emploied.
It's all fear. People like her are taught that life is all about hissing the right arses. They're taught that the way to rise to the top is to lay down and get walked all over. It's 100% incorrect, for someone who wants to get high in life. On the other hand, it's going to ensure that she always has a job, because there will always be managers in search of a new and better doormat.
People, please don't be like my friend. The more people who cower like her, who lick the shoe that is kicking them in the teeth, the more companies and managers will think it's ok to walk on people and kick them around. People like her teach bad bosses that they can abuse and use people, because there are people like her out there who will be grateful for the "opportunity" to be overworked and underpaid.

I was in a cult-like organization from the age of 11 until the age of 40 when I finally decided to leave, and, well, these kinds of Linkedin posts seem 'uncomfortably' similar to the cult dynamic. Especially since these 'laid off' employees seem reluctant to express typical emotions one experiences when being laid off; fear, confusion, anger, being a few of them. They all sound like they can't wait to move on to another 'amazing' company, amazing like one they just got laid off from, and are praising like it was a Utopian corporate paradise.

After 6 months in, the corporation decided it needed to save money, so it slashed over like 500 jobs across the board. She was fired from this cut. No looking at the people in those positions, just flat out a clearance sale. 2 Decades of her life gone working for a company that didn't even bother to see if she existed. Also talk about bad timing too. Had she not been promoted, she still would of been with us today. I guess its a good thing for her sake. I'll be honest, they do actually take care of employees pretty good and pay pretty decent for my first job outside of the military with the main thing being they're paying for my whole bachelors in IT for software development. Aside though, I know when its time to leave it was just a job and I needed more than they could any longer provide. Love the content bro!

It's more than being afraid of burning bridges and saving face. It's something people do to get their next job.
If you walk into an interview and say that the reason you left your last job is because you were "let go", it'll be a red flag for them and you'll lose a huge amount of points. Then, if they ask you about why you were let go and you dare being honest and call their bullshit, they'll discard you immediately. Remember the canon of interviewing: "never talk bad about your last company". Even if they were terrible, even if they treated you like shit, stole from you, fired you in the most humiliating way possible, that's simply something you cannot tell. (HR psychology is absolute garbage and that's why we're all here, aren't we?)
Those kissass posts are all about easing the blow for their possible next employer.

i joined this company few years ago. A collogue of mine has been working for 35 years in the company and he is retiring did not save much unfortunately. The boss of the company sold this company recently and donated about 40 million to school she graduated, and did not give any thing, i repeat any thing to this old man, other than the salary he was paid. I find this utterly disgusting. Why would a school which took tuition for education, get 40 million in donation, but a worker of her company who worked almost all his life get nothing. i find this insane, unjust, appalling and lost faith in humanity.

I randomly came across your comment and it reminded me of an old man I was helping my wife negotiate a salary with a few years ago. His new business was a "startup". But, he'd been part of a $300 million buyout of a family-owned business (I'm guessing he got about of 4th of it). He acted insulted when we didn't take his first offer. He actually said to me "We've employed a lot of people. People loved working for us. They almost never left us."
It took a lot of self-control for me to not say "dude, they may not have left you, but you sold them out to a private equity company that very quickly bankrupted the company and laid them all off."
Two years into the startup that had met every expected milestone, "his heart just wasn't in it" anymore. He let my wife go with no severance. Not one penny of cushion for two years of hard work. We were fine because I'm self-employed and can just work a little harder. But I've always regretted not pointing out how he'd sold out all of his employees.

I think the size of the company is very relevant on technique/approach. I think that there should be a bracket of courtesy when it comes to doing this step, but I DO agree a lot of people go overboard with it - perhaps because they want a backup plan in case shit goes down.

Due to their error, I was removed from the contract and eventually let go. I had a legal case if I wanted and the leadership ghosted me after a few weeks trying to get things rectified. It was at that point I realized that company loyalty is bullshit. Remember, don't work for free, these are 40 hour work weeks, don't feel guilty taking sick leave or vacation, if your job is deliverable based, recognize your freedom, and realize that you're just an asset to them, nothing more.

Ok, I don't normally ever disagree with you, but here's one thing I disagree with you on (based on experience): In some countries, it's a custom to bring in food and beverages on your last day/birthday. For instance, I lived in Estonia for three years, and I noticed this custom occurring with all the companies I worked for. I'm a little surprised you didn't come across this custom when you lived in Finland (as Estonia and Finland share a lot of culture). My apologies if you did know about it and just simply disagree with it. I have to admit I did find it a little weird when I came across it, but it's kinda nice in a way. I think it only really works if everyone does it though, cause if only some people do it, it would kinda suck. Anyways, excellent content as always Josh.

It may not work at all with HR people and headhunters, since they face this for years. However, people just have this brainwashed way of showing they are being fired not because of their inability or laziness... Guess it is some weird way of telling the world "It was not my fault" + not telling negative points towards ex-colleagues, since they might reappear somewhere else.
My mom had big troubles finding a new job after a layoff, since in every interview she stated and complained about the layoff and that is something HR does not want to hear... Until she just stopped and then was super successful.

I spent 7 years at Qwest Communications as a Senior Internet Engineer where I configured, troubleshot, provisioned and tested internet circuits, customer routers, Qwest edge routers, etc. We easily worked 60 hours a week. I remember coming in one day at 6:30AM and not getting a chance to take a bathroom break till 5:30 that evening. So twice a year I hosted a party....one in the Spring and one at Christmas. Now, my wife would invite her colleagues too, and of course we would invite friends and family, so one Xmas I counted upwards of 65 people crammed into our 1600 square foot house and we had a great time. My wife and I provided everything...food, drink, soda...everything. A couple years after leaving Qwest I realized that I was in touch with only two of the dozens of coworkers from the old days. I also realized that over all those years, not a single one of my coworkers ever invited my wife and I over to their place, out to dinner, etc. That's when I truly grew up. I realized that the people you work with are just that....people you work with. Despite spending 9 or more hours a day with them, they are not your friends. They are your co-workers. Nothing more, nothing less. So now when I go into a new work environment, I don't go in expecting to make any REAL friends. Yes, I'm friendly, approachable, easy to get along with, responsive to the needs of others, etc., but I keep in mind that they are NOT my friends. And I'm fine with that. I don't even make an effort to remember people's names anymore. More often than not, I've completely forgotten them within a few weeks of moving on to the next gig. One more thing...about burning bridges. Yes, for many years that was a real concern of mine. "Don't burn a bridge"...make sure you exit gracefully, you never know if you'll need to fall back on the old company for work. So I was basically a floor mat most of my career. I put up with shit from people whose knuckles dragged on the ground when they walked, because I didn't want to burn any bridges. The only time I ever went back to a former employer for rehire is when things were really dire. My wife had been transferred down to Houston and so of course I went with her. However, the labor market in Houston is more blue-collar, oil-and-gas industrial, so there's not so much need for IT types like me. After TWO years of unemployment, I finally reached out to my old employer back in Virginia. I had a stellar reputation as a project manager with my former employer, having rolled out two applications during the three years I was employed there. During my employment, I regularly worked 50-60 hours a week, came in at night to work with the night shift, came in one weekends...I even worked through TWO Thanksgivings and Xmases. So in desperation, I reached out to them hoping that they might have some work for me....I figured if they did, I could move back up with family in the area and resume bringing in some money. The reaction I received utterly shocked me. Word got back to me that my former coworkers were running me down, wondering why I was so screwed up and couldn't figure out what I wanted to do (?!?!?!?!). As if any of these people were qualified at psychoanalysis. These miserable excuses for human being were basically rejoicing in the misery and desperation of someone who had had the courage to break free of the company. What depraved assholes! So the lesson I learned from that experience was NEVER GO BACK! BURN YOUR BRIDGES WHEN YOU LEAVE so you will never experience the same humiliation I did because, in the end, 99% of all people SUCK and they are just looking for someone to shit on to make themselves feel better in their own twisted, demented minds.

I leave every job behind. They got 6-12 months of me, thats it. Eg: I'm hired based off my resume that says 10 yrs experience. Their raise after 1 yr is less than $1/hr increase. I leave, pass out resumes with 11 yrs experience, i'm hired immediately with whatever I ask. More than $1/hr increase. Leaving a job behind is always worth more than any raise, because no ones sees your experience if you're employed. Everyone sees your experience when you're unemployed. You always end a job with more experience than when you started. So advertise it, and show that you're a competition to be dealt with. Then you will see yourself evolve into the solopreneur/freelancer/contractor you're suppose to be.
