8:55 the "Flint," thanks a lot buddy, helped a lot.
Oh yeah the Flint is great!
Also, I just picked up Fender's new Tre - Verb Pedal. It's their version of the Flint. I gotta say, I like it even more - the reverb is glassier, and the trem is smoother.
As an owner of Strymon gear myself it is good to see someone that uses Deco and Flint. Both very capable pedals.
Yeah! Their gear is so versatile - they pack so many sounds and features into attractive little devices :-D
I just got the Deco, it's an unbelievably great pedal. You can't make it sound bad on any kind of setting. I actually enjoy it for the flanger effects.
Yeah!
It's fun at the front of the chain or the end - it's a real swiss army knife of a device!
Eric, I’m gonna finally pull the trigger on a Deco. You got any clue if there’s a difference between version 1 and 2? They should be paying you money at this point, man.
This video totally sold me on the deco. All the demos I’ve seen are over complicated, this quick blurb was perfect and all I needed!
I bought one mainly because of his rhythm guitar video
That fuzzface sounds amazzz!
+Mimic Thanks! NOS germanium FTW!
Love all of your videos. If you plug into the other output of the Deco, flip the mini switch down your delay will have two repeats. I had it a year and a half before I figured this one out. A long delay with two repeats is as much as I'd ever need in full rocker mode. Another reason why this pedal is so amazing. You probably already knew this I'm sure. Cheers, JV
OMG I didn't know this! So cool! Thanks for the tip!
Eric hit the tremolo and busted out the CCR, I smiled so biggg
Yeah! I love CCR - that band could groove for days, and Fogerty's writing and guitar playing is really special.
Thanks Eric, you are a tonemeister! great ears. love the bit on over tuning. You ROCK
Thanks Dave! Yeah - overtuning is a modern epidemic!
Another great video. Thanks for the James Williamson capo lesson at the end!
dude i love this channel
Thanks man!
Great video! The most unusual use I've seen for the Loop Station is by Scott Henderson who uses his before a gig to make sure his levels are right with the band. He gets the loop going then goes out into the audience to see how it sounds, then make adjustments accordingly.
That's a great idea!
I always hate it when I start a gig with my settings wrong, and have to tweak them as I go :-D
4:28 - 4:35
Probably the best tuner pedal review ever
"Overtuning" will soon be added to the DSM-5. It ruins gig momentum!
There should be a note on tuners that says "only use if your ears tell you that your out of tune." :-)
I have an Old Marshall Blues Breaker that I swear is better than any other booster pedal I have heard. I also have what I consider the holy grail of distortion pedals, which I got for $20 at a garage sale in the early 80’s, an original Boss DS-1. I later found out it was one of the first Boss DS-1 pedals made in Dec of 1978. I always wondered why it sounded unlike any other DS-1 I have ever heard, even other silver screw ones. I don’t care for Boss pedals and the new ones suck but, if you can find one of the originals, beg, borrow, or steal to get it! Love the vids, keep em’ coming!
Now I have gear-acquisition-syndrome!
I love those old bluesbreaker pedals, but never really gave much attention to the DS-1. My buddy Brian is a Boss collector, though. I bet he has one I can play with!
Hey I love the pedalboard, I wish you continued success in your music!!
Thanks again, Angel!
Just got the Deco
today. Version 2 sounds great!
That FuzzFace seems to be watching me. It has a face and has fuzz, finally truth in advertising.
That Swamp Raaawk tremolo sounded, real swamp sweet. Thanks for sharing.
That's the main reason I use the fuzzface! It makes me happy to see my smiling friend down there :)
This has pretty much sold me on the Deco. I play in a sort of country-folk/soul band and already own the Flint. I could pretty much make my pedal board the size of a shoe with just Flinty and that Deco!
Exactly!
I've recently replaced the Timmy with the Strymon Favorite switch. Now I have my rhythm sound and lead sound both coming from the Deco!
Oh man that's a great idea! So if you disengage the favourite switch it goes back to the physical settings on the pedal?
Yup! It takes some head scratching to program, but it works like a charm!
definitely trying that out. thanks for the tip!
@@EricHaugenGuitar could you share this head scratching program process? interested in getting a minimal set-up, and this would be great!
jst got the deco, after watching this im more excited fornits arrival. That fuzz face WOW!
You won't be disappointed!
The Deco is good at so many things: greasy edge-of-breakup tone, slapback, chorus, flange, or as a light tape compressor that catches transients and round them off!
Fuzz is cool too! Perfect for searing Hendrix leads!
Great sounding board and that fuzz face sounds so good...
Thanks man!
I love the fuzz+delay combo - so epic!
Terrific board and explanation thereof. Your shiz is really together.
Thanks Rob!
Eric, I have always loved the tones you come up with for your instructional videos. I think at a minimum, I need a Strymon Deco. I've been looking into picking up a Princeton or a Deluxe Reverb. It seems like the Deco would put just the perfect amount of hair on that clean Fender tone.
I think you're absolutely correct!
A Strymon Deco combined with a Princeton would be perfect! If you played louder gigs, you might want the Deluxe Reverb. But for 90% of the time, the Princeton is aces. It's the #1 amp I recommend my students to get as their first tube amp :-)
Just talking about it makes me want one!
@@EricHaugenGuitar
Thanks, Eric. I'm not playing out anymore, so the Princeton is probably plenty of amp for me in my basement. Now the question is 65 Reissue or 68 Custom (which has more of a Bassman tone stack and breaks up earlier). It might be wise to go with the cleaner 65 and let the pedals give it grit. Decisions, decisions.
Nice little sneak-in of "Couldn't I Just Tell You?" Todd is God!
Good ears!
I love Todd!
Me too! We have similar tastes. Keep up the good work!
One of my many fav Todd songs - riff sounds perfect with the deco. Can you give us some Todd or Utopia?
I was just about to post that, too! Great song by the mighty Todd Rungren. Eric, that would be a nice instructional video!
good idea! great video, Eric
The Deco sounds magnificent!
Any experience, using its modulation side before a cranked amp?
Oh yeah the Deco is one my all time faves!
I've never really tested it out on an amp past halfway, but it sounded pretty good through my tweed pro at like 5 :-)
For someone who only has a loop, this is an education.
It's a slippery slope, my friend!
I'm picking up a malekko ekko based on this vid. Was about to go with tc flashback but I like how non-pristine this sounds. Licks don't get lost in the mix while playing.
+The Hester Show Cool! I love that the Malekko has a mod control and a buffer/true bypass switch! And yeah, I too like dirty delays! I like it when the delay sits well behind the primary note attack - I've never been great at layering delays and doing all that cool Edge stuff.
FuzzFace is amazing! I just fish it wasn’t so big, it takes up a lot of space that I could use for other pedals.
There are the same fuzz face but in mini version plus led and DC in.
Awesome board
Well done Sir, keep it simple!
+Me Myself Thanks! I've since simplified even further - I removed the Timmy once I figured out how to use the deco's favorite switch.
Good call, Eric. Weirdly, I think I really enjoyed the sound of the Deco as a boost MORE than the Timmy. Good to see that your ears agreed enough to take the Timmy off the board ...
Just checked out the Hotone Xtomp any opinions? It seems you could get away with using two of these or perhaps even just one for you entire board or would the Eventide H9 be a better choice?
+Me Myself I haven't gotten to play with either of those yet, but you're right - they'd probably pretty good options! Only downside of multi-effects pedals is it can be a bit of a bear to edit your presets, especially on the fly. But the simplicity of having one pedal to rule them all is tempting!
+amandio silveira yeah! I love the Timmy, but there's something so spongy and rounded about the deco overdrive that's really unique!
So, Deco into Flint. I've been using the opposite. My thinking being, the tape effects would be added after the guitar signal chain. I tried Deco into Flint at first but found the reverb to be to prominent. I'm will try that order again with reduced reverb settings. Thanks for making me think (rethink).
It's so RARE to hear someone talk about tech and STILL be a gd MUSICIAN!!!
Thanks so much, Johannes!
Anytime. You got some tasty sounds.
Great sounding guitar
Thanks Frank! That CIJ tele is my most reliable and versatile guitar!
@@EricHaugenGuitar you're welcome. I was wondering how hot the pickups are on the guitar and are you using fuzz and overdrive together
Vintage output! Generally, I like low output single coil pickups - more vocal.
And also I almost never stack overdrives or fuzzes, too many variables for me to tweak :-)
Pedal goals🥰
Lil' rectangles of joy!
This made me NEED a deco haha!
I use mine all the time!
It's the most amp-like overdrive I've ever heard!
This made me BUY a deco (and a flint)
by the way, I bought that tuner -- less than $90 on Amazon
Perfect.... might have to get a Strymon...like both of them really Those two cover a LOT of bases
People don't quite know how good the "tape saturation" side of the deco is! Strymon doesn't market it as the greatest organic overdrive ever - but it is.
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yeah definitely under the radar for what it does If I get one I might hit you up for some sample settings
I have the same shoes 😮
Hi, Eric. Amazing video! Never heard of the Timmy before but it really sounds great!!
One quick question, which patch cables would you recommend for connecting your pedals?
I’m not loyal to any brand particularly - I distrust all my cables equally :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar Lmao. I totally get it. Happy holidays, Eric!
Awesome sounds with miminal setup! is that the classic 1 size pedaltrain?
Thanks my fellow Eric! Yup, it's the classic 1.
I've since gotten even more minimal - the fuzzface and looper are off the board. Maybe they'll come back, I'm nut sure yet :-)
hella old school Haugenomics learnin some pedals
I like the Tenacious D-like lyrics of his jam at the end with the Looper.
Jack Black is a very important lyrical influence for my songcraft :-)
strymon guys told me to put Deco at the end of the signal chain..... any thoughts on sequence of effects?
Love your sound man? Was surprised you don't even have a compressor, as I run compression most of the time. In a live context do you use your Timmy to keep your levels good between lead and soloing.
Follow up: I've heard deco has nice "natural compression," do you find that in using it as an always on pedal? I want a deco!
Thanks Anthony!
I really love the Deco. It's great as an always on crunch, or if I use it with a hollowbody, I lower the saturation into compression levels, and it balances the guitar nicely. It's not the same as a dyna comp or anything, but it works pretty well.
Hi Erik ! where can I put my TC MINI TUNER 3 ( buffer option) on my pedalboards with Ge Fuzz, Old VOX Wah and 2 OD pedals please ? Thanks a lot..French fan here 🇫🇷
I'd go:
Wah - Fuzz - OD - OD - tuner
Should sound amazing!
@@EricHaugenGuitar , Thanks a lot Eric !!!!
Dammit.. now I really want a deco.
It really is the smoothest, squishiest, and most enjoyable overdrive pedal. Every other overdrive hits much harder, the deco is somehow “pillowy”
Hey Eric, do you mess with the secondary EQ functions on the Deco, the bass and treble cut at all?
Not yet!
I bought a "favorite" switch from saturn guitarworks.com and programmed that to be a boost tone. Now I don't even use the Timmy. I have my Deco set for light crunch, and then click the "favorite" switch for solos :-D
Nice! I use the Fav switch as well! Thanks for the reply!
Hello Eric,
Great thanks for this video of your pedalboard.
In your opinion, what is the best place for the Strymon Deco: before the preamp section of the guitar amp (due to the tape saturation) or in the effects loop of this one (due to the effects modulation and tape delay)?
I've never used an effects loop in my life! I'm dumb and just front-load everything :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar Haha! Thanks for your reply Eric. I was sure of it. Given your guitar gear, I was expecting this answer. 😆
Right so I have a question. Is the Deco best placed in the signal chain before reverb? I've read elsewhere it's a good idea to have the Deco as the last pedal in the chain?
The deco can go either place!
After the reverb it'll act more like a studio compressor, so I wouldn't drive it too hard. Reverb hitting distortion can get real noisy.
@@EricHaugenGuitar Ah ok makes sense. Cheers
You put the overdrive before the tuner?
For the Deco, what is your "Type" switch set on in the middle? Looks like "Sum."
Yup, sum.
I can't really hear too much difference as I change postions :-D
Eric, what amp are you using here? The fuzz sounds awesome. I recently got a Fender Tonemaster deluxe reverb and overdrives sound great with it, but my Germainum fuzz just doesn’t sound good.
Try input 2! Or some folks installed the firmware update that darkens input one.
Deluxe Reverbs have a special "bright" cap on channel 1 that makes some fuzzes too fizzy.
Nice. What's that descending arpeggiated progression around 7:40. It sounds so familiar but I can't place it!
Ah yes Todd Rundgren's "Couldn't I Tell You." I meant to do a lesson on that one and haven't gotten around to it yet!
Awesome, thanks! I spun that double disc in vinyl way back when. What a great tune...that memory made my day!
I see things have moved on since I bought my Zoom 505 in 1997
How can I make my fuzz face mini cool like yours?
I wouldn't bother! Even after the mods it sounds more or less the same as stock :-)
Can you use strymon deco slapback without overdriving?
You can! However, it's not my favorite delay - I prefer my malekko ekko 616 dark analog delay for slaps and tails.
The Deco's delay side sounds a tiny be too digital for me
Hey Eric, any updates in this board?
The deco and the delay stay on no matter what - everything else is subject to change. If you’re a Instagram person - I’m on there and post silly things as well gear updates. @erichaugen_guitar
Hey Eric, great demo and nice board, how come the jacks are opposite way around on the fuzz face?
Weird, right? That's the way they were on vintage fuzzfaces, so that's how they do 'em on the vintage re-issues.
¯\(ツ)/¯
So the Mustang you use, without pedals, lacks sustain, which pedal do you use to provide the sustain to that plinky sounding Mustang?
Any light overdrive will do the trick but I love my deco!
@@EricHaugenGuitar The reason I ask id love the tone of Strats and Teles but I have been blessed with Hobbit hands do they can be difficult to play , I have a Duosonic that is easier to play but I don't like it's tone and sustain
I need a #2 guitar as #1 needs rest. She ain't getting younger and age is showing on frets and finish. Almost got a 72 Tele Deluxe RI but I already have a 72 Custom RI. Decided I need variety instead. Just waiting for the right specimen to appear. Could be a Casino, could be a Mustang, maybe a Jazzmaster - whatever bonds with me. #3 May very well be another Tele of some kind but that is way down the road. Love your collection. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yes! I always endorse the decision to get more guitars! YOLO
That's a tough choice between a Casino (can be hit or miss, but the good ones are GREAT), a Mustang (short scale takes some getting used to), and a Jazzmaster (possibly the most comfortable guitar to play ever).
I think it really depends on what's available in your area. You never know unless you can sit with a guitar and actually play it. Online demos are ok, but getting a guitar is like getting a dog - you want to meet it first :-)
So what are these all attached to? I didn't want to scroll down to find out if someone had already asked this question . The pedal board is ... ? and yes I am just discovering this 5 years later. Sorry Eric. I am 60 and slow.
Hi Phil!
The board itself is a pedal train classic and the amp is a tweed pro clone - good stuff!
And you're a Plate guy as well. Haha *awesome*
Srsly tho without a Phase 90 that board is incomplete ;)
Not fair... I didn't even want a Deco before this..
It's become a huge part of my sound! It's just the perfect crunch :-D
Truly epic fuzz tone. Do you ever run it in to the Timmy for even more juice? I have a similar setup with a Keeley 30ms instead of the Deco. Intrigued about the Flint now...
Yeah! I sometimes use the Timmy as an EQ for the fuzz, since it doesn’t have one ☝️
The Flint is pretty great, as is Fenders new Tre-verb pedal - which is just their version of the same thing
Marc Meyer in NC.?
Yup! Marc's the man!
So you use a separate amp for the RC Looper?
In some of my earlier vids you'll see me do that, but usually not - it makes things too complicated :-)
I'm not a fan of DSP at all...especially on your "thru tone"...but boy, that Deco Saturation really sounds nice in the video!
I hear ya - in an ideal world, I'd crank my tweed up to 7-8 and sound amazing all the time. Unfortunately, the smaller venues that I typically play don't allow this sort of thing :-) I was quite surprised at how round and squishy the deco saturation turned out to be! I A/B ed it against all my other overdrive pedals and it actually sounded the most natural. This has led me to the conclusion that modeling technology has improved over the years and gotten frighteningly realistic!
Why the tuner after gain stage?
Mainly just because the fuzzface is so big and needs to go early in the chain :-)
That reverb pops out like a drunk uncle at a wedding
lmao
I have watched this video way too many times.
Thanks for single handedly upping the view counter!
Here I am again.... I picked up a Deco yesterday. The cost was HIGH but I haven't stopped playing with it. Almost done building my basic pedalboard. Lack fuzz and reverb(Fender Blues Deluxe on-board is unusable) leaning towards a Hall of Fame and either DOD Carcosa or EQD Erupter. Thanks for the inspiration. No longer need my Flashback x4 Delay but it gives me a Looper and fun stereo wet/wetter delay mixes.
Congrats! Welcome to the party!
I actually really like the Fender Blues Deluxe Reverb - it's tube driven with a nice long pan, so you might not need a verb pedal unless you want really really dreamy sounds.
I used to have a hall of fame and liked it a lot, but I bet the DOD is pretty good too. In general, I find that the bar for pedal quality is so high right now that you can get good sounds out of almost anything :-)
Combine fuzz and delay for epic
Indeed! One of my favorite sounds!
no wah?
I've got a Vox Clyde Wah from the '90s, it's just not on my board at the moment :-) No room!
"see if these lyrics fit with mah song.."
