Timing always lines up such that as another work week winds down, before I leave my desk, I hop into UA-cam. Invariably (thank you, O Mighty UA-cam algorithm!), Eric Haugen's Friday lesson is top of the queue for me. I do not need to scroll past it as it is my favorite decompression chamber between the rushing flow of work items and easing into my weekend. As a guitar and music student, Eric is an absolute top-tier instructor and I always learn from these lessons. As a person, Eric's genuineness, engagement with and enthusiasm for all things music, and kind soul always shine through. Thanks, Eric! 🙏🏽🌟😊
Oh man, the perfect Little Wing solo with all the right bends. Thanks for that one. Every time I learn Hendrix's exact playing it proves yet again: Hendrix was off all the charts. Edit: I went and listened to the isolated track solo and see you added a few release bends but, damn, they actually make it sound better at least when played by us mere mortals.
I've always loved this song, and the phrasings in the guitar work, so I'm thrilled to see it used as the foundation for this week's lesson. And you're gonna go far with this little tag line: "The audience doesn't know what you can't do until you show them." I have a show this weekend and I'm going to let it guide my decisions. (Maybe I'll get it as a tattoo.) Thanks once again, brilliant internet teacher!
That electrified CLICK BAIT title with the lightning bolts really did it for me, Eric ha! 'I Wish I Knew These Phrasing Tips 30 Years Ago' *icon of exacerbated guitar professional*
you just opened up this video with the very song our old band used to play, that was my favourite to show case feeling. Amazing song. Carnival. The guitarist in this band was very special and interesting.
Really nice Man. I love the tone of the Tele at the beginning and I wondered why you would swap to the Strat. Then I heard the Little Wing licks and Wow!
On vibrato, I know that Peter Tork from the Monkees talked about the brief period where Hendrix was their opening act and he asked Jimi about vibrato technique. Hendrix told him to use the weight of the guitar to help. Another point: it's easy to vibrato frantically and sound bad because it's too fast. Slow it down, probably about half the speed that you think you need to do. It can be hard to do in brief/quick notes, but it's worth it. Listen to Danny Kirwan and Peter Green. On playing tastefully, just watch/listen to Chris Stafford. His guitar in Feufollet and Viatones was so incredibly tasteful. He instinctively knew exactly what a song needed melodically, arrangement, production, etc, and could deliver. Effortlessly tasteful on pretty much any instrument. I don't know if there's any one quick video that showcase his playing because he was so understated.
What are the odds that one of the guitarists I most admire in this arena is the one you choose to emulate? Jenn Turner on this whole record is really just a masterclass in tasteful phrasing and melody.
You make great videos! Great camera work and entertaining attitude and informative presentation. Nice that your audio is not clipped too. I hate when videos are published with clipping record channels. Keep up the nice work.
Learning scales is like learning alphabets A-Z. Phrasing is speaking in phrases, sentences, paragraphs (for soloists). To play a scale up and down the fretboard is similar to a kid spelling out A,B,C in order.
Muting bends & vibrato: You didn't mention it but looks like you are also touching high strings with right hand fingers while palm muting lower strings
Just bought Guitar Zen :CAGED.. looking forward to getting started with it.. Once completed is there a practice routine i could follow or a practice routine template or such thing.
Hey Erick your lesson have been a big help, was wondering if you’d ever considered doing a explanation on the licks heard on Lou Reeds song “Coney Island Baby” the songs a simple chord progression but the lead is what brings it to life, and I can seem to find a video explaining the lead playing or even a cover. I’d really appreciate it 🤘🏽
You were doing something at the beginning I see a lot but am not sure how to interpret. When you play the E chord around 1:03, your pinky goes up to the 3rd fret of the 6th string. I think I'm realizing only now that you are not adding in a low G note but just using your pinky to mute the strings below it. Is that right?
How to be a tasteful guitarist secret hack #5: Invite Eric for a coffee. When he leaves, look for his fingerprints. Go home and make a 3D model of his right hand and left hand. Replace your hands with them. Done. Don't forget to check my other secret hacks. // Eric, do you still do guitar lessons? :)
Good one. The audience doesn’t know what you can’t do until you show them. So true.
Thanks Eric 🤙😊
I was “obsessed” with Carnival, probably heard all versions that Natalie sung (and Jen Turner played guitar) MANY times. Thanks Eric!
Agreed😃👍👍
Turner's playing is so tasteful 😎👍👍

Thanks Pj!!
Carnival is such a great song! ♥️

I never knew I needed a phrasing called "Coconut Shrimp" in my playing but, here we are....nice work. Eric.
Now I want coconut shrimp
Thank you Eric, you're my favorite UA-cam Guitar teacher and personality.
New to your channel. Such a relief and treat vs the click bait. Walked away feeling like I actually learned something and enjoyed doing it!
One of the best phrasing lessons I've seen in a while.
These series you do are sooooo helpful! Thank you!
Ahhhhh

This is such an underrated complex song!

I LOVE that you're using Carnival's lead guitar here. Always been a colossal favorite. As are you! :)

Whenever I scroll through YT it looks like Times Square NY - it's just a little too much. (I wish it looked like a library)

Adding that Carnival rhythm part to my repertoire! -an intermediate guitarist that has been feeling stuck but finds inspiration in these videos
This is an exceptionally great session of learning...

Auto save on my guitar lessons playlist (and on TrueFire for good measure). Coconut shrimp rawks!
I love that song, thank you!!!
Was quite literally just 20 min looking for a phrasing video from you…
Thank you Eric!!
Little Wing off of the Jimi Hendrix Experience purple box set is a whole other beast, 3 1/2 minute instrumental
Ooooh I gotta check that out!
Absolute legend.
Thank you for not making a clickbaity title for this video.
Eric - my GOAT! ❤
Grreat vid, Eric.

My main advice is to take the ideas and apply them to chord progressions and songs you already know to open them up!
With a title like that, this video needs more Archer references…
6:57 **PUT ON YOUR VR GOGGLES NOW**
🤣🤣🤣
Omg I love Natalie … and Jen. Imho she sounds like a cross between Gilmour and Hendrix
Toooo gooood thanks Jedi master haugen 🎉🎉🎉😮

Awesome stuff! Thanks. How about, "Jumpstart your tuning in 5 seconds!!!" ;)

Yeah that's just something my pinky likes to do for me - mute the chords!
Beautyful tele, what the teles's type it is?
now I can't get coconut shrimp out of my mind now😅😅
The song: coconut shrimp
Coconut shrimp
Coconut shrimp's so sweet
which strings ?super !
Just Ernie Ball 11s (I don't think strings really matter that much)!
Coconut shrimp made me laugh out loud
tele best !
Extra sauce on top of the cheese. If you haven’t tried it you haven’t eaten pizza 🙃✊🏽✌🏽

Oh no he had to give the gold top back 🫤. That’s a great sounding guitar though.
really? but its tone -!you got one !
Me hearing Eric say "sloppy player": you called sir?
Is my voice made of hands or are my hands made of voice. I scream, for I do not know.
An Archer lesson.
🥥🍤‼
Eric, I hope at least 3 people have told you this week that you have a stupidly impeccable taste in guitars. Good grief, dude.
Small coconuts are offended😂
its all about feeling, touch your guitar like you're touching your girlfriend's hair
you playing wrong !!!
cool.
Thanks!
Thanks so much man!
