Sorry guys, something I missed in my research - Underworld was originally planned as one long script but then got split into two, so Evolution is basically the second half of what was first written.
I was just about to say that, but then realized that you commented it yourself lol. I think if movies worked the way they do today, the first two entries of Underworld might've worked better as one 2.5-3 hour long script (that's essentially the length of all the Marvel movies and stuff) instead of 2 standalone movies, but it was so much less common for movies to be more than 2 hours in the 2000s.
Just the structure and stuff. The first movie was great. The second movie was good (in my opinion), but there was quite a bit of "filler," and I think that most of the second movie could've essentially been the "third act" of a longer movie, with some of the scenes put back in the "second act" (before/during the final act of the first movie) to set up the finale with Selene and Marcus.... Does any of that make sense? Lol
I think Evolution is the movie that closed out the storyline of the 1st Underworld. It’s completed Selene’s life story from the past with Viktor, that connected to the present with Marcus and her future is free from her purposes and just havign Michael with her.
@@BetterWithBob i watched it so many times and i think Evolution is Greater for me. The storyline is more savage, sexy, guns blazing, and it was her freedom evolution from Viktor’s malicious plan. So good 😛😋😋🤌🙈🍑💕
I agree, they needed more interesting secondary characters and probably not kill Marcus and William so quickly. Rise of the Lycans is really good. And I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about Awakening and Blood Wars! You already nailed what happened to Michael. I mean, his fate in Awakening and Blood Wars was innevitable after what they did with him in Evolution. And Blood Wars having some little connections to Viktor and Amelia was a nice touch but not enough.
They could make another prequel or a prequel series about the hunt for William. Markus, Viktor and Amelia in the 1200s. I am sure many people would love that. That opening is the best part of the movie.
So, I'm a fan of the Underworld franchise. I've watched the first three movies at the cinema and this one in particular I watched with my girlfriend at the time, which would later also become the mother of my only son, so I have a few good memories relating to this movie and the franchise as whole. Earlier today I watched your video on the first movie and I wanna say thank you for these video essays. I'm really looking forward to your analysis of the third movie, because I also didn't like it at the time and totally changed my opinion about it when I rewatched it a couple of years ago.
The Underworld movies are a classic example of what I keep seeing which is a kind of upper-mid tier franchise that could have been actually really good with some foundational and structural changes. A little edit here and there, a little re-write, slightly different directing, and it'd be great. I can take the movies for what they are, but I'm always watching movies like these like a teacher grading homework and making notes, than truly getting lost in them and enjoying it fully.
@@BetterWithBob in the Dawnguard DLC of Skyrim it lets you become a vampire lord which has the batlike wings and face similar to Marcus. Can't play it without choosing vampire still lol
For me, the one thing that held this movie back from being truly great (or, as great as a movie like this could be) was it needed a stronger arc for Michael. Because he just made a major life change at the end of the first movie and it's like he's partially unfazed by it. Not to mention the bad guys of the movie are his ancestors, so you'd think he'd feel something about that. But there was just a little too much focus on Selene. But it's still a fun movie for me.
She was probably slaughtered by Markus along with the rest of the vampire civilians. (Ironically the coven's Death Dealers were fighting the Lycans on the far side of the city, meaning that Markus mostly killed the Vampires who'd let themselves go soft. The Death Dealer army would have had to scramble for safe houses and finish clearing out the tunnels to make them safe as a shelter from the sun once they realised that the mansion was gone).
Rise of the Lycan's is the best of all movies, and pretty tightly contained, too. A shame they never changed the flash back scene in the first to match up that one. But first one was held back by budget, they did a good job with it anyways.
Thats a good idea, having craven bent on having a revenge against slene and that playing into sending people after herand bubling to the finale, could be fun, and probably what the movie needed. He can still bie killed by marcus but at the end. Oh and michaels struggle and having lycans tricked by craven to attack them to become allies through michael dealing with whom e he has become would have been just good minor notes helping.
I saw Evolution before I saw the first one. Im a Blade man lol. Underworld Evolution is my favorite out of the entire franchise. The action....enough said. It wasn't over done it was just enough.
Underworld Evolution is without a doubt not only the best Underworld sequel. But the best Underworld movie period. It's everything a sequel should be. It built upon the greatest of the first one and made it even better. Just like what Terminator 2 Judgement Day did for The Terminator. This is the only Underworld sequel where we see Scott Speedman coming back as Michael Corvin and exploring his Hybrid power. Like getting impaled through the heart and a few hours later. He just comes back to life and just jumps from a helicopter and shoves hand clean through a Werewolf and just pulls back. Then he grabbed and ripped the top half of the head of William Corvinus the first and most powerful Werewolf ever with his bare hands. Who is also ironically Michael's ancient Grand Uncle. It's also where we get see where Michael Corvin and Selene give in to their romantic feelings for each other. Also this the one where Selene becomes the first Vampire who can stand in the sunlight. Just like a Human. This movie also gave us a the true reason why Victor killed her family. Not just because he was a vampire and he wanted to feed on humans. But he wanted to prevent Marcus from freeing William. I love that. A villian killing people for a reason you can understand but not 100% agree with. Unlike future villians who just kill for the sake of killing. Like Marius killing Michael. Even Marcus had a good reason for killing Michael. Because he was the only thing between him and Selene. Such awesome stuff. I'm still pissed 😡 off that other movies especially Underworld Blood Wars just shoved Michael to the side. Did not go further exploring his powers and his relationship with Selene. Because they are favourite fictional couple. This is why I pray 🙏 3 times a day for an Underworld 6 with Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale back as Michael Corvin and Selene. Giving their characters the happy ending they deserve. Like getting married and being a family with their daughter Eve Corvin. Michael becomes the new leader of the Lycans. Michael can still be alive. Because if you can come back to life after being impaled through the heart. Then a cut to the throat should be no problem. Plus Scott Speedman said he would love to come back if it's a big and important role. Anyway. Underworld Evolution definitely worked. Because not only is it my favourite Underworld movie. As a matter of fact I had to more 3 copies each for both of them. Because I kept watching and I couldn't get enough. So yeah Underworld Evolution for me gets a 10/10, 5/5 and a A+. I absolutely love it.
I love your video. Could you make videos like "why season 3 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a perfect season" or "why season 6 of Charmed doesn't work" . In short, videos like the one you did on season 2.
I still gave the video a like, but I can't say I agree with most of your criticisms, although I get where you're coming from. For me, this one is the best in the franchise. The action scenes are better, it furthers the lore in a really cool way, we meet some cool new characters, it explores more of Selene's past, and the story overall was better paced. And I also would very much love to see a director's cut if it exists.
Viktor is one of Bill Nighy's best performances (not to say the best movie he was in) and the prolog to Evolution is one of the best scenes of that performance. "What's this ruckus!?" is one of those lines that has stood out in my brain since the first time I heard it. Even out of context, the tone and cadence is immediately commanding and ominous. And it's really too bad he's playing against Borlly in that scene. I take that example as a microcosm for all of Underworld. Some of the best stand out moments in all of cinema, with a lot of flaws along the way.

@@BetterWithBob it sure is it had so potential and im still mad 😠 that Michael was killed off in future installments after hyping him up and also unpopular opinion the actor should of been replaced i think how this movie franchisees dead off.
We wanted more good story with the hybrid lycan form and how strong they can grow also why didn't the big werewolf and his father become hybrids like Michael if they where taking eve covin blood which should be at its purest form or they need to be bitten blood directly is more purer than a bite.

This film is the perfect ending to the trilogy. Nothing wrong with this film. Yes, it did work. Awakening was a major disappointment and Blood Wars killed of Michael so I will never forgibe that. I pretend that Awakening and Blood Wars do mot exist.
I think most fans would agree with you lol
Yes and no love the movie regardless.🙏🪬🧿💙😊
It's a mixed bag lol
@@BetterWithBob it sure is it had so potential and im still mad 😠 that Michael was killed off in future installments after hyping him up and also unpopular opinion the actor should of been replaced i think how this movie franchisees dead off.
@@Jaymako0829 Yeah it seems to be that Scott Speedman wanted to leave and possibly they thought David and Selene could carry it
We wanted more good story with the hybrid lycan form and how strong they can grow also why didn't the big werewolf and his father become hybrids like Michael if they where taking eve covin blood which should be at its purest form or they need to be bitten blood directly is more purer than a bite.
