I don't know if anyone else has brought this up but Jonathan is the prefect kind of comedic side character. Yes he cracks jokes & can be the cause of some of their problems BUT he is also physically capable of fighting, is willing to fight, goes on archeological digs, & is able to both read & speak Ancient Egyptian!
As a kid, I remember laughing out loud over and over when he remarked about wanting to learn how to make shrunken heads and everyone else giving him the look.
Jonathan is hands down my favorite character in this series. For a character that could've been a 1 joke character,hes stepped to help Rick/Evie/The Medjai Leader and his Nephew Alex. Ill never forget the ending to Mummy Returns. "Its a bird,a stork." "I KNOW THAT ONE!!!"
@@BetterWithBob for years.....I always considered Izzy the Pilot as a jerk at the end of the movie when he's like "half that diamond is mine" But then I remembered how his Dirigible Crashed in a Pgmy zombie filled Jungle and he was left alone as Rick and Eve and rest needed to save Alex. This dude used goddamn Trees to make his thing fly and he swoops into save all of our favorite Characters. Yes izzy...half of that diamond is his.
The scene where he runs into a mob of mind controlled people chanting "imothep" and without missing a beat immediatly start mimicking then was his crowning moment of awesome for me.
I love Jonathan because he's just Beni, but with a redeeming quality. He is greedy and cowardly, but he loves his sister and will still set aside his own survival for her because he's a decent human being.
My fave scene ever! Is on the sequel when he tells the kid “if you see someone running out screaming…don’t worry, it’s just ME” 😂 the self loathing is pitch humour
Years ago, I came across a comment about The Mummy and it has stuck with me ever since. Towards the end when the trio were trying to escape the collapse of Hamunaptra, their characters were tested one last time. And if the three of them were not together, they all would have failed. The character tests happened in rapid succession so it's easy to miss. Jonathan slipped and dropped the book in the tar pit and Evelyn stopped to admonish her brother. But she was quickly dragged away by the two men before falling rocks could have crushed her. The same thing happens with Jonathan, he saw all the gold in the treasure room and just had to stop to try and take some loot. But again, he was dragged away by Eve and Rick. Then Rick, his test came in the form of Benny. Rick still tried to save Benny despite the latter's continual harmful actions towards Rick. One last time, the two saved the one in peril. They really needed each other to survive the ordeal. Benny, in contrast, was alone in his greed and ambition. Thus, Hamunaptra successfully claimed him. It's those little details that make The Mummy truly the best movie.
Stephen Sommers is one of those directors who knows EXACTLY what to do with a huge budget. He uses every penny to its greatest extent. I really hope he gets a chance to do another big budget blockbuster some day.
I hope not. His movies got worse as his budgets grew. I enjoy Deep Rising just as much as The Mummy, but then he succumbed to George Lucas Syndrome (overuse of bad CGI to ramp up the spectacle, with no one telling him that something is a bad idea), which grew worse and worse with each movie.
The part on the ship where the bullet holes keep getting closer to Rick as he's focused on reloading his revolvers and then Evie moves his head one more time so he doesn't getting shot is just pure gold. This film is a 12/10 any day of the week.
I absolutely love this and the second movie for how they depicted the two leads' relationship. The romance was truly central to the story and its themes, and showed romance doesn't have to slow down action but can motivate it.
I saw this movie in the theater with my dad when it came out. My dad passed away very suddenly about a year and a half later and even though it wasn't the last film I saw with my dad, it occupies a very special place in my heart.
The Mummy is my "I would watch this on TV if it was on" movie. I love this movie so much, I wouldn't miss one minute of it. This film is a terrific swash-buckling horror adventure movie I would never get tired of. A manly hero, a classy dame, a comedic sidekick, an evil villain all together in this wonderfully constructed story. I remember people keep saying this is an Indiana Jones Rip-Off, and I wasn't into Indiana Jones until I watched the Mummy. And I have a full appreciation for Indy after the Mummy. And at 10:13, what you said about not being afraid of romance in movies. I miss romance in action movies like the Mummy. Today's action movies of 2023 are afraid of romance, as if it has no place in modern day story-telling. Hell, almost every action movie I've seen doesn't even show people "kissing" as much. I feel like Hollywood today sees romance as a weakness to men and women. Not to me, it doesn't. There is strength in two people loving each other and Rick and Evie's relationship are a great example of it, especially in the sequel. Hollywood needs romance back into the action genre.
The article did say that there is possibly a fear of alienating male audiences because romance is seen as 'girly' but I'd say it's another casualty in the pop feminist bad faith takes we had to suffer in the 2010s trying to claim Disney movies were 'problematic' because of princesses falling in love. Disney does dominate much of the media that's created, and they're the only company that's always emphasised creating things for girls and women, so the effect is that they're trying to avoid backlash for advertising romance to young girls, since in the 2000s and 2010s people kept going off on the supposed negative messages it sent.
Evie is one of my earliest Crushes. Rachel was absolutely one of the most beautiful women in the world at the time. Brendan Fraser is one of the most underrated actors of our time. Vosloo, Fehr, and Avari are all brilliant
When I was stuck in the hospital for nearly two days waiting for labor to kick off, I definitely wasn’t complaining when the first and second movies were playing on tv. They are both movies I will never get tired of watching and can’t recommend enough. Also, Stephen Sommers is a local celebrity since he’s from St. Joesph, MN. There is a small section of the county museum with a permanent display about him and his accomplishments.
Fun Fact: Prue’s and Maggy Murphy’s darklighter from Season 2 of Charmed is the same actor who plays the high priest Imhotep in The Mummy around that time. He does a great job in both The Mummy, Charmed and his role a few years later in the show 24. (Murphy’s Luck is the title of the Charmed Season 2 ep)

I'm glad you've seen it now. It is one of many underrated films that, just like The Mummy or Peter Pan, does a great job weaving a lot of elements together for a joyous film experience. Saw this last night and my 15 yr old daughter thought she was super cool. No need for being a smart arse, no MMA moves….just bravery, skill and courage. She’s great.
I absolutely adore this series! I watched the third one today for the first time. While it lacks that charm the first 2 display, it's still action packed and chock full of fun adventure!
I commented this on another video but i like to this and Van Helsing are set in the same universe due to having the same director/writer and producer, sharing some actors between tnem and having a similar tone and style to them.
One thing I like about stories like this is the question, "how could they have potentially made him immortal?" Well, much like Rome, I imagine the Egyptians couldn't foresee their empire ever ending. They knew they would always be there, and only a fool would dare to resurrect such a monstrous creature. But time proved them the fools, and their worst nightmare came to pass beyond their ability to prevent it.
As a teen I couldn't get enough of this movie. And because of it I developed a massive crush on Arnold Vosloo and realized that I have a thing for monsters.
The actors just nail the comedy, the threat feels well threatening yet its fun. And even a great heroins that uises smarts and wittyness and is amazing. Also breandon frasier seems to have gotten with doom patrol back into horror, good. I miss good but charming flawed but great adventure movie genre with a fair amout of cheesiness. Also weiss and frasier are so good playing each other off. Also i like people who can be goofy but badass. Through i think he was better in gods and monsters where he did well playy of two legends. Oh yeah and imhotep actors plays a great detestabke yet tragic villain in love. Who makes a good foil too?! Johnathan is fun too, also how the regiseur actually listened to recommendation to make it as least orientalist as possible.
It probably helps that he was a fan of the 1932 original, which is very progressive for its time, and even has a scene where the male lead is told off that they're not treasure thieves, so it's very aware of the implications of what they're doing
I was obsessed with this film when it first came out. I know the majority of the dialogue word for word. It’s just an Incredible film that blends horror, action, romance and comedy perfectly. The sequels were shit, but this film is in my eyes as near perfect as a film gets, if only for its accessibility.
Seeing this as a kid in the cinema it was amazing and opened my mind to archeology and egypt and my fascination with history , absolutely love this movie!10/10
I wish Stephen Sommers would make movies again. I always loved his style. You can sense the passion he has for filmmaking in all this work. I don't know how you feel about Deep Rising, but if you're a fan of it like I am, I'd love to see a video on that one too. It's a criminally underrated monster movie and some of Sommers' best stuff.
This is a movie I always go back to watch since 1999. I was eleven years old, and it's something that generally all of my friends and family enjoy watching (except for my grandparents, but they're prudes so it comes with the territory).
For me, The Mummy and Sleepy Hollow were the last fun action horrors. Both movies have a joy for spooky set pieces, gross gore and just enough stakes to make you care for the characters. They're fun, silly and interesting.
Yeah personally I think all of Stephen Sommers movies are perfect, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing and even GI Joe Rise of Cobra I think are perfect movies to me personally I constantly go back to watch these four movies and I always love them even more when I finish watching them
My all time favourite movie ever also the sequel. I think I was 7 or 8 when I watched this when it came out on vhs and i was completely scared when I watched it, but rewatching it I found it hilariously funny.
It has everything I love and enjoy. I have been obsessed with The mummy 1999 since i saw it on vhs in 1999. its been a 10 from me since day one. I quote it all the time too
Honestly its just a really fun movie, with the added benefits of competent writing, characters and set pieces. Just a traditional 90's styled blockbuster, I still throw this movie on every now and then. Plus, Indiana Jones is very nostalgic to me and this certainly gives me Indy vibes.
Not to forget how awesome it is that they tried to base the movie (albeit loosely) on Egyptian mythology and making every set look so damn atmospheric yet believable, and those props... Just looks at the books for example, they made the key so it would actually unlock them! They don't make them like this anymore, great video on a perfect movie.
Well said! I completely agree. As a mystical adventure the Mummy is as perfect as can be. There are very few movies I personally, utilizing both subjective love and trying to apply objective analysis, find perfect (as in when even the flaws make the final result better). There is almost always something that takes away from a movie reaching that perfection status. Beside the Mummy, it would be the Matrix, Robocop, Princess Mononoke, OG Ghost in the Shell and Fury Road. Nothing else gets to that all wrapped up together perfection both in terms of technical, objective mastery and being completely to my taste. Add to it my two perfect trilogies that are perfect specifically as trilogies -- the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes reboot. And there you get the magic when excellence in filmmaking meets your personal tastes, which does not happen often, but when it does... fireworks!

The Mummy is definitely 10’s, 10’s across the board. I love this movie. Sfx still holds up. When I was a kid, The chemistry between brendon and Rachel really made me think they were together in real life. Lol. I wish they didn’t mess it up on the 3rd film when they recasted Rachel. Like why?!
Though I was solidly in my mid-late teens when this came out, BFra, Vosloo, and Fehr really helped solidify my s*xuality. Hell, even Rachel Weisz had her alluring moments. While I agree that this movie needs no defending, it's still a treat each time I get to see someone give it the love it deserves.
Great movie, and John Hannah went on to play an amazing character on my favorite show of all time, STARZ's Spartacus: Blood and Sand, where he absolutely destroyed that role. Amazing actor.

The Mummy was like watching a Weird Tales series come to life, which, indeed it was. The line "kill the bad guy, rescue the damsel in distress, save the world" summed it up rather perfectly. With its Indiana Jones inspiration, I would even argue there's a fair amount of Conan the Barbarian/Cimmerian infulance as well, and it's not so much campy as I would call stylised. I really do think the humor and action style of The Mummy was the blueprint of the feel and style of what the MCU would become. Some of the action and jokes are verbatim to eachother. And besides, when everyone wonders why so many Millenniuals are bisexul, look no further than growing up with The Mummy. Who could ever choose between Brendon Fraiser and Rachel Wiess?
If you've read any of the Cthulhu Mythos or Conan stories then you've read Weird Tales, both H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard were regular contributors. What's great about the Weird Tales style is that it can fit anything from Swords and Sorcery to Ray Gun Gothic.

I was obsessed with this film when it first came out. I know the majority of the dialogue word for word. It’s just an Incredible film that blends horror, action, romance and comedy perfectly. The sequels were shit, but this film is in my eyes as near perfect as a film gets, if only for its accessibility.

I wish Stephen Sommers would make movies again. I always loved his style. You can sense the passion he has for filmmaking in all this work. I don't know how you feel about Deep Rising, but if you're a fan of it like I am, I'd love to see a video on that one too. It's a criminally underrated monster movie and some of Sommers' best stuff.

This is a movie I always go back to watch since 1999. I was eleven years old, and it's something that generally all of my friends and family enjoy watching (except for my grandparents, but they're prudes so it comes with the territory).
For me, The Mummy and Sleepy Hollow were the last fun action horrors. Both movies have a joy for spooky set pieces, gross gore and just enough stakes to make you care for the characters. They're fun, silly and interesting.
Yeah personally I think all of Stephen Sommers movies are perfect, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing and even GI Joe Rise of Cobra I think are perfect movies to me personally I constantly go back to watch these four movies and I always love them even more when I finish watching them
My all time favourite movie ever also the sequel. I think I was 7 or 8 when I watched this when it came out on vhs and i was completely scared when I watched it, but rewatching it I found it hilariously funny.

I think this should've been done with all of the Universal Horror flicks. Reimagined as a different genre.

Honestly its just a really fun movie, with the added benefits of competent writing, characters and set pieces. Just a traditional 90's styled blockbuster, I still throw this movie on every now and then. Plus, Indiana Jones is very nostalgic to me and this certainly gives me Indy vibes.

Not to forget how awesome it is that they tried to base the movie (albeit loosely) on Egyptian mythology and making every set look so damn atmospheric yet believable, and those props... Just looks at the books for example, they made the key so it would actually unlock them! They don't make them like this anymore, great video on a perfect movie.

Well said! I completely agree. As a mystical adventure the Mummy is as perfect as can be. There are very few movies I personally, utilizing both subjective love and trying to apply objective analysis, find perfect (as in when even the flaws make the final result better). There is almost always something that takes away from a movie reaching that perfection status. Beside the Mummy, it would be the Matrix, Robocop, Princess Mononoke, OG Ghost in the Shell and Fury Road. Nothing else gets to that all wrapped up together perfection both in terms of technical, objective mastery and being completely to my taste. Add to it my two perfect trilogies that are perfect specifically as trilogies -- the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes reboot. And there you get the magic when excellence in filmmaking meets your personal tastes, which does not happen often, but when it does... fireworks!

The Mummy is definitely 10’s, 10’s across the board. I love this movie. Sfx still holds up. When I was a kid, The chemistry between brendon and Rachel really made me think they were together in real life. Lol. I wish they didn’t mess it up on the 3rd film when they recasted Rachel. Like why?!
Though I was solidly in my mid-late teens when this came out, BFra, Vosloo, and Fehr really helped solidify my s*xuality. Hell, even Rachel Weisz had her alluring moments. While I agree that this movie needs no defending, it's still a treat each time I get to see someone give it the love it deserves.
Great movie, and John Hannah went on to play an amazing character on my favorite show of all time, STARZ's Spartacus: Blood and Sand, where he absolutely destroyed that role. Amazing actor.

The Mummy was like watching a Weird Tales series come to life, which, indeed it was. The line "kill the bad guy, rescue the damsel in distress, save the world" summed it up rather perfectly. With its Indiana Jones inspiration, I would even argue there's a fair amount of Conan the Barbarian/Cimmerian infulance as well, and it's not so much campy as I would call stylised. I really do think the humor and action style of The Mummy was the blueprint of the feel and style of what the MCU would become. Some of the action and jokes are verbatim to eachother.
And besides, when everyone wonders why so many Millenniuals are bisexul, look no further than growing up with The Mummy. Who could ever choose between Brendon Fraiser and Rachel Wiess?

If you've read any of the Cthulhu Mythos or Conan stories then you've read Weird Tales, both H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard were regular contributors. What's great about the Weird Tales style is that it can fit anything from Swords and Sorcery to Ray Gun Gothic.

Absolutely agree with your thoughts on a perfect movie, not just perfect, but a good movie. Good means so many different things but for me is how much I enjoyed it. I don’t want to feel I’m writing an essay on this later as the themes mean more than the story. I’ve been so bored watching so many best film Oscar winners and my favourite films haven’t even received an Oscar nom in any category….
