- Our look back at the 1966-67 television season and our tribute to the ending of the CBS broadcast network run of Gilligan's Island takes us to this final Gilligan clip today (part 2 tomorrow).
This video clip is from a 1992 interview with Bob Denver, Dawn Wells and Russell Johnson when they appeared on the Faith Daniels talk show on May 4, 1992.
They talk about the show, how they were cast, and the inevitable highs and lows of becoming accidental television legends on a television show that has become iconic.
Note that Bob Denver's two daughters are in the audience... at position 7:08 and 8:17 in this video.

Did you notice that there has never been a comic book series version of Gilligan's Planet? What you don't realize is that I've added one extra character to the Gilligan's Planet storyline. That's the 5 ft. 6 long, straight white blonde hair crystal blue eye black American woman named Teresa Dortch. She's supposed to be Professor Roy Hinckley's roommate. At the same time. Teresa Dortch is Willie Gilligan's boss for a different career.

The actors dropped from the pilot were: John Gabriel (high school teacher, not professor), Kit Smythe (Ginger, but a secretary, not a movie star), and Nancy McCarthy (as Bunny, Ginger's co-worker, played as a dumb blonde).

Their all gone now. Dawn Wells passed away today Dec; 30, 2020 at age 82. She's 54 here and pretty as ever.
That's why I'm watching this now because Dawn passed away today. So very sad.
Tina Louise is still alive btw. So that makes her the last living cast member. I sometimes wished the opposite happened instead.

@@humboldtharry4248 - Interesting true story. Bob Denver went to the producer and demanded their names be added to the song. A difficult feat in those days due to the technology used. They argued, Bob won. and thus the revised ending, "The Professor and Mary Ann..." Dawn Wells states Bob did that on his own volition. Just a super nice guy.

@@jfryza - I know. He insisted on having them added to the song, after the production process was done. Though it was argued about the cost and time involved, he didn't care and said to do it. Very kind gentleman.

The Professor and Mary Ann were added to the theme song for the second season when the entire opening was reproduced for color with the song rewritten and recorded again using a different group of singers. They did not redo the first season’s version which is all that ever included the line “and the rest.” Denver did that out of respect for his colleagues (it had been a contractual complication of casting the first season) and Sherwood Schwartz agreed. Tina reportedly did not like it, but Schwartz told her not to fight it. It’s in his book.

Again, Dawn Wells states that despite rumours to the contrary, she did not have a different contract and did not receive residuals longer than other cast members.
Natalie Schafer who played mrs. Howell left dawn wells some money in her will to take care of natalie's dogs.

Yes, because they got screwed out of millions... no one knew what sitcoms was going to grow into at the time. It's was stupid at times but hugely popular as the years went on but no residual deals was signed by the actors and actresses. Everyone thought when the series ended that it was just going to the banished in the archives never to be seen again.

BTW, it was actor JOHN GABRIEL that was the professor in the unaired pilot. The unaired pilot has been published on DVD since.
GI was a funny show, loved it as a kid when watching it daily in reruns!

I like the Professor's explanation as to why Tina Louise didn't associate with the cast after. They were all typecast after the show. Even Adam West describes how painful that was after Batman. And even the Trek actors took a long time to get out of that shadow.
Could very well be, but it is used as a convenient excuse a lot of time me thinks.
@@GizmoRob176 Its a common thing among top-hit actors getting typecast as the characters they play, even the actors of Hogans Heroes got type casted, notably the main star; Bob Crane. Tho few actors is cool with it and even adapted to it. Alan Hale jr., Aka the skipper, got used to it easily and always wore the sailor cap everywhere he goes even to the point he opened his own sea food restaurant (a place I badly wanted to go to as a fan of the series).

I believe Tom Cipriano a.k.a. captain Janks can easily be seen in the audience. He was a famous prank caller from the Howard Stern show
Less than 6 months later, in Oct. 1992, TBS aired the original pilot, and then people could see John Gabriel as a HS teacher (The Professor) and Kit Smythe & Nancy McCarthy as 2 secretaries. I think all 3 of them are still alive.
Obviously Mary Ann found the Fountain of Youth on that island.
She still is the same today & looked the same in the Gilligan's movies. I thought she was lovely, still is.

Really sad that the show, as popular as it was and still on tv until probably forever since it ended, didn't make them wealthy. Most of them struggled to survive until their deaths. Dawn Wells had to get the public's help to secure a home in a living facility for people living with dementia/Alzheimer's. She luckily got that help and passed not very long after. They could only make money from occasional tv appearances like the few made for tv Gilligan's Island movies or to reunite to talk about Gilligan's Island on occasional talk shows or tv specials, or make a little money at autograph signings, or make a few bucks to appear in a commercial here and there for some obscure business in some small town in any random state. Although the Skipper, Alan Hale Jr. did own a restaurant for a while in Southern California. Tina Louise wanting to distance herself from "Ginger" and the show didn't help her get out of not being cast much afterwards either. So it also was sad to see that she never reunited with the others afterwards, but apparently she also had a feud with Bob Denver and Sherwood Schwartz.
Today, they would've all been millionaires based on current contracts like the cast of Friends, Seinfeld, Big Bang, etc.
Faith Daniels could have Easily played Mary Ann in a remake. Stunning!

Question: What was Gilligan's first name? In a book about the series producer Sherwood Schwartz said 'Willy' was the name he imagined if Gilligan had a first name during the pilot show's conception.. True story! I always thought Gilligan was Bob Denver's first name and pretty sure we all did! Willy Gilligan just sounds really strange to me. Skippers name was 'Jonas Grumby' and the Professor's name was 'Dr. Roy Hinkley'...

I remeber when i saw Elisabeth Montgomery and Barbara Eden i thought i had saw the most lovely and sexiest womens on earth but when i saw Dawn Wells she never stuck out of my head . That was untill i saw Sally Field but even after seing Sally i still had problems leaving Dawn Wells aside cause while Sally was cute like hell shye didn't have the body shape of Dawn Wells . I think thats what made a diffeence between the two . one was extremely cute while the other was extremely sexy

@Alan Brown I have to agree. Never was a big Flying Nun fan. I always thought it was a ridiculous concept.
Gidget, on the other hand, should have lasted more than one season. Fantastic cast with the talents of Don Porter who was a great TV dad and TV brother in law Peter Duel, who I always admired as a kid and teen. Loved his style.
As for the The Flying Nun, not to surprised it only lasted one season.
I never cared much for Eden or Montgomery, but both could look real good with just the right touch, but I saw far too much of them when they just weren't all that appealing. I think the deal with Dawn was, that if you were mature in the first season, Mary Ann wasn't all that appealing, perhaps mostly because she wore pig tails so much, plus they were really trying to not focus on her as the beauty. Remember, Dawn was "and the rest" for the first season along with Russell.
Yvonne Craig, SUSAN OLIVER, Dawn Wells, Sally Field, Pamela Britton, and Shelley Fabares are among the better ones I can think of for the time being. Actually Tuesday Weld was durn good too and yes Jean Byron, Jane Wyatt, and Pat Priest. Sheesh, you can't hardly stop once you start. I think out of that whole lot, as you can tell, my fav would have to be Susan Oliver, but she was never a permanent member of a regular show. She uplifted so many shows though with her beauty as a guest star. I can think of only one tv show actress that outdid her in my view, and that was Caryn Richman, but she wasn't going to even be known by me until she was on The New Gidget and of course that's an entirely different era than our castaway crew.
Actually one thing to look for. Next time you see Gilligan's island, look at Mrs Howell's neck. She was in her sixties in the series and she looks like she has a twenty year old's neck. I've never seen anything like that. She's not one of my favs, but she's an odd Gilligan fact.

Now I'm only guessing, but from what little I watched it, I came across with the notion that every episode was the same (yet it lasted THREE YEARS?????). It's such an oddball concept that even if they tried real hard to make different plots, those elephant ears just dominated everything. I think America got robbed of more Sally somewhere else due to that lame show. It was at least different. Didn't Sally have a gigolo friend all the time on that?
I thought they took care of all of those residual things back in the 30s and 40s with contract the damn shame they should have gotten residuals from every show even if it was like Denver said a nickel per rerun

They would finally get off the island only to find the world reeling from Covid 19 and all just head back to the island.

Typecasting is a horrible thing to happen to anyone. Many actors play many roles perfectly. Even Max Baer Jr. who played Jethro Bodene was typecasted as a bumbling idiot and never found mainstream work again..
George Reeves who played Superman in the 1950's TV series was another victim of typecasting. Before Superman he was in Gone with the Wind and other shows playing various types of characters. After Superman he had trouble finding parts. At the age of 45 he committed suicide.

I just can't believe Dawn Wells still looks so beautiful after 50 years. Ginger (Tina Louise) even in real life is said to have had an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore. But looks like she paid the price because now she looks like death boiled over. Oh, by the way, this video is not the 50th anniversary of the series because Bob Denver passed away back in 2005.
