    I know this video is going on 2 years old but I had to post this. With the aid of the info given here I changed the fluid on my 2016 Ram 1500 with the 8 speed transmission. I am 69 years old and after 50 years of construction work my shoulders are worn out . The worse part of changing fluid was putting the bolts/screws into the new pan. I probably watched every channel on changing fluid but I sure liked this one the best. It's been about 500 miles since the change and I just pulled my 4000 pound travel trailer with the vehicle mentioned above from an elevation of 1200 feet to 7400 feet in a couple hours here in Arizona. At times the tach was up to 5K rpm but all went well and tranny shifted as smooth as silk. Thank you!

      No worries Ray glad it helped. I would recommend using a tiny little impact gun to snug the bolts up but these damn plastic pans... scary hahahah. Cheers.

    I bought a 19 Ram 1500 with the hp70. I was looking around for the transmission dipstick and noticed, to my disbelief, there is none. I do all my own oil change and service. So this video definitely clears up some questions I was afraid to ask the dealer. But $1500 bucks for that service? Yeah they can honk on Bobo

    Thanks for the practical demonstration with the checklist of how to do the transmission fluid / filter change. I love your sense of humour. Use a wrench and read a thermometer. One observation on the temperature from C to F. A little trick to remember. 20 C = 68 F. 30 C = 86 F. (10 degree rise from 20 to 30 - - reverse the F numbers - 68 F 86 F). 40 C = 104 F.

      @@GilbertGardens I replaced the plastic pan with a PPE aluminum pan. It went pretty easy. I used Valvoline Maxlife Multivehicle atf. I got about 4.5 to 5 qts out and due to the larger pan used 7 qts to fill. I raised the rear to level the trans. Next fluid change should only be $100 including trans filter. I did notice smoother shifting once I changed fluid. I was definitely overdue.

    Thanks for the video - very well done, as are all your others. I purchased my fluid through Amsoil (who were very helpful) and an aluminum finned pan, a bit larger than the original & with a replaceable filter from an Alta supplier (believe they're called Cdn Diesel). Took my 2014 eco diesel (150k kms) to my mechanic who did the change & installed the new pan. He talked about having to change the torque converter fluid separately which I was surprised to hear. When I was younger I would have done this myself, and your videos make it very tempting - but in my late 60's I find it generally works out best to watch my mechanic, who is happy to use my provided supplies and charge me labour. Thanks again for your videos which I find all most informative & enjoyable.

    Great video! Good talking, not much just looking at something we can't see. I especially like that you take off the fill bolt so we know we can refill it. I have some advice to better service the transmission. Shifting to reverse backflushes the filter. So shift to reverse for 5 seconds to backflush the solids out of the filter, but not too long because you want the solids in the pan. Drain the fluid from the plug bolt and fill with new. Start the truck and run in forward for 20 seconds and then reverse for 5 seconds. Drain the transmission fluid again. Now, after much of the solids are removed, install the new pan. Fill the transmission, empty, and refill. Some people use the Lucas transmission additive. I have never seen a negative about it. I have read where the Valvoline ATF meets manufacturer recommendations. At $6 a quart that saves a lot of money over $17 for Amsoil. I remember when Amsoil started. They had a booth at the Texas State Fair. There were two devices with gears and a crank to show how Amsoil would make its way to the top gear. i knew this test was bogus so I reversed the direction of the crank for the other oil and it made it to the top as well. Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc are not worth the extra money. Shell T6 for diesels and Mobil 1 for gas cars is the way I go.

    Nice video. Been thinking about this myself. I've got a bigger gut than you so it's going to have to go up in the air at least a foot or so. Anyway, couple months ago I had it at the dealer for some other work and asked them to "just check the fluid. Just take a small sample on paper towel and look at the color." After the service, I was given the statement "The technician doesn't recommend changing the fluid. Everything looks fine. It's filled for life. " spiel. When I pointed out the obvious that "lifetime" isn't defined and my warranty was due to run out in about 11k miles, she just gave me the I know what your are saying but I can't say anything else look. I really like her but her hands are tied.
    Anyway, even ZF doesn't recommend "lifetime" but that only make the transmissions. FCA warranties them.

    • @GilbertGardens
      @GilbertGardens  5 років тому

      yeah most techs have not done this service. Sure for us in Canada its lifetime fluid...upto 100,000 KM once the warranty is done and the transmission fails your out several 1000's. FCA can say what they want but at the end of the day wouldn't you trust the people who MADE the transmission? This exact transmission is in rolls Royce and high-end BMWs. its a VERY good transmission. BMW and rollys Royce don't say lifetime warranty. they say 80-120K. Not sure why budget FCA would recommend otherwise.

Lately though there seems to more and more videos/info about people using other fluids with no problems. The guy at great canadian oil says there pump out - pump in machine will fully change all the fluid (even in the torque converter). The downside however is it has to be done simultaneously so there is no chance to remove the pan in between. So I guess its a choice of changing all the fluid (for $225 ca) but not changing magnets and filter... or changing half the fluid but getting a chance to inspect/change the magnets and filter. However since this is the way ZF wants it done it's the way I will do it. Even if I do it on jack stands. I'm going to begin shortly here, I have a 3 liter pressure bleeder that I can use so maybe I will have to do three at a time or the initial fill followed by the technical procedure followed by whatever the heck I guess it takes after that.

      @@GilbertGardens I'm a stickler for the instructions. Especially if it's only done once in awhile. Then there's no regrets or open questions. I really dislike the lack of engineering that goes into scheduled maintenance like this. There should be an easy way to do this in a garage with a transmission filler neck and dipstick. Like anyone, I hate how cheap things have gotten and how hard they're working to privatize simple scheduled maintenance. A person should be able to Simply hook up to an inlet and Outlet to exchange fluid. It should be a 20 minute job.

      The ZF trans uses a combination double pass oil-to-air cooler located in the top of the AC condenser, you should make sure you recheck the level after the cooler valve has had a chance to cycle fluid on a new fill to ensure the levels are still correct.
