      Silly as it might sound, the shifters on all my Trucks come out of the floor connected to a MANUAL TRANSMISSION. As of last week, Three of my 2014 Ram 4500's surpassed the 500,000 mile mark each. And only replaced the clutch in each once.

    Been considering buying a new Ram 3500 with the gas motor and the 8 speed transmission. That rotary knob shifter just seems really happy to me. It couldn't have been any more happy if they had anodized it pink, and put a rainbow logo on it.

      Its one of those things that people "love or hate". Seems everyone has a opinion on that one thing about these trucks lol. Over time I get use to it expect for that rare moment when I think I am changing the radio channel with the shifter knob.

  • @cujoedaman

    Dodge: Builds fully electronic shifter. Puts in mechanical "shifter" anyway.
    So why not just stick with a standard shifter?
    Also, 8 speed?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому +4

      Trans is made by another company (ZF).....it had pretty much because the most common trans (by numbers) on the market. They designed it.....we have to make everything work with it which means shifter as well. Everything in the trans is electronically controlled so a shifter with cable would serve no purpose. Plus being electronic with the shifter knob....if someone does something stupid, it can place the truck in park to prevent them from getting hurt. It has alot of benefits and really no issues with it.....but no shifter handle is hard to get use to for sure even for me. I get in about 10-15 cars a day that has that set up and I dont even think about it. 8 speed......the more gears then more we can work on the fuel economy. Every little helps. Make sure to subscribe and enjoy the weekend.

    1 - More electronic shit WE DON'T NEED
    2 - The gear selector dial is in the same place as the transfer case dial on the F-150. Excellent choice, Dodge. This Ford owner accidentally moved the dial to PARK while moving when attempting to disengage 4WD. The good news is the electronics are smart enough to prevent me from buggering the transmission.
    I do like the newer Dodges and the 8 speed tranny works well. However I'd much prefer the gear stick be a lever.

    Just out of curiosity, would just anyone be able to do the mechanical override, or are there any security features that prevent anyone but the key holder from doing so? There’s been a lot of stolen rams that are being towed off and stripped for their parts in my area over the last few years

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому

      Only way to prevent someone else from doing it is the doors being locked. Which if they want open....they will get it opened. One thing to remember that on all trucks....not just this version, anyone can crawl underneath the truck and take the shifter cable loose and move the linkage by hand. So there are other and easier ways for them to do that which you wouldnt be able to prevent as well. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

    Ironically ram is the only brand making trucks with manual transmission's, to me that stupid knob is a dealbreaker, I just can't go over it. Even a Prius have a real shifter, shame on "fiatsler"

    • @wojtekspc
      @wojtekspc 5 років тому

      What r u smoking? Almost every new vehicle has the same thing, it not maybe a knob but unless it's manual they are all connected by electric wire not linkage and especially a prius

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому

      The bad news is that Ram is phasing out the manual trans as well :( . Like the other viewer commented all fully electronic transmissions will be using a knob or a "joystick" that looks like a handle but using wires and no cables. Its something I dont like but am forced to face as I work on them. My Durango has it and for the most part I dont notice it once I put it in Drive. Seems we are along for the ride with what ever the engineers come up with no matter the brand or the vehicle. Maybe if enough fuse is made they might change things but personally I dont see that happening.

    Yes I like the video. Thank you. I have a 14 Ram truck and often thot about just that. If the battery dies, then what? The truck is jammed up in Park. I've heard similar comments from others regarding this issue too. At least Chrysler knew this shortcoming and did build in a remedy. My dealer sure never told me about it.

  • @JT-un7dc
    @JT-un7dc 5 років тому +4

    I was driving one of these last month while my truck was in the body shop. Not a fan of all these electronic transmissions. That rotary knob takes some getting used to. I still prefer a column shifter or a manual.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому

      I can understand. I only have it in my wifes Durango but all the cars we work on all day do have it. I have gotten use to it. To be honest....how many times do we really shift an automatic......3 maybe 4 times each time we drive it maybe. I personally like something to put me hands on while I'm driving a car.....in a truck it makes no real difference to me personally. Its different....I will give you that lol

I'm about to buy a 2017 Ram 1500 regular cab/short bed with ~ 31K miles and this automatic transmission shifter "knob", and until I came across your video I had NO idea this would ever be a problem. Thanks! Now, I have a question. The truck I'm about to buy needs the weather striping replaced on both upper corners on the lock side (not the hing side), but during inspection, it appears the paint has been rubbed off - in the corners only of the door jamb, not on the door corners themselves - apparently due to abrasion. I've never seen this before but am a bit concerned this may be a warning to future issues. Any ideas/suggestions on this? Thanks again for your video!

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Takes all of 5 seconds at the most to do it. This isn’t so that you can move the shifter and go into other gears like on all of our other cars we have....this is strictly for park. For the most part you will most likely need to use if you do....5 seconds tops. I don’t make them.....I just work on them.
