I do feel that buying any newish bike is basically a write-off of at least a third of the initial purchase price. I like to think that the cost of a 2 week family holiday is about what I lose at the next trade in and it doesn't feel so outrageous. Very much enjoying your content thank you.

One of the problems I've come across looking to buy a cash second hand bike from a private seller is, they want to get top money or above more or less getting back what they paid for it a year or two ago, I have a good look around to see prices of second in dealerships, Auto Trader and compare them to private sellers, you can often get a bike cheaper from a dealer with some warranty, I just keep looking for a bargain bike with all the extra's and a decent price regardless of who's selling it. You have to be prepared to make a loss selling second hand bikes, whether trading in or selling privately, or be stuck with it for a long while.

    • @ontheroadadventure

I Agree, however ours was by far the cheapest available. You have to be realistic if you want to make a sale. People often over value their bikes and want to include the value of extras that they spent, but we all know you never get that money back

I think that during covid all bike prices got inflated new and old. The problem is now that the prices have stayed high, probably due to the fact that people who bought in covid who paid top price still want to get top price back. The other worry when buying used is buying a melon??

I'm in the market for a bike in the £4-7k range (buying outright with cash) and tbh, the prices people want for used is daft. Yes a lot are immaculate, with very low milage. But why would i pay £5k for a 3 year old used one when i can get brand new for £700 more from a dealer, 100% no risk, no accidents, no need to check it over or HPI it, and no messing with payment options.

Following lockdowns people went crazy for bikes cars bicycles and dogs. Now supplies of these are available and people no longer seem desperate to get their hands on them there seems to be an oversupply. My local (100 mile round trip) BMW dealer had a shop full of used bikes, end of lockdown more or less all sold in four or five days. My four year old car, 39k miles sold to a dealer for £300 less than I payed new. Now there’s a fallout with bike and car dealers oversupplied with stock they can’t move, sheds full with bicycles that’ll probably never be used and unfortunately dog shelters filled with unwanted dogs.

I'm in my 50s and after many years and many, many dozens of cars and bikes, I will NEVER darken the doorstep of a dealer again. I would rather get a bank loan and buy a nice bike from a private seller if that's the way I wanted to go.. The warranties are not worth the paper they're written on and once you're out the door, they are not really interested in you or the bike. Last week, I picked up a 30 year old VFR750 for a £1000, absolutely lovely thing, even with 67k on the clock. I'll be prepping it over winter and taking it to Europe in spring. I've had fairly new Tracers, Fazers, Tigers, CBF1000 etc etc.. all great machines but too much money tied up in them and too much depreciation for me.. Even my car is 32 years old and guess what..? I’m one of the elusive second hand buyers, searching at the moment. My personal opinion? People want too much for their bikes, simple as that. If they were priced right, they’d sell. Same with houses, they get listed for, let’s say £200k, they don’t sell, they drop the price, they sit for a while, then they go for £170k, the price they should have been listed for in the first place. I think the other issues is that pcp is becoming really big. Smallish deposite and have a 20 grand bike and as long as you meet service intervals you have the bike for like 3 to 5 years and either buy it outright or go in for another payment plan on the next new thing. Of course unless you buy it at the end, you never fully own it. However for those who just go out every now and again, the service intervals are rarely over 20 000 miles and I bet very rarely hit major ones like the 30k miles for valve clearances. I would keep it and wait for summer and sell on auto trader or take it to bike night and then put a for sale sign on it

Triumph are a good well known premium brand, costing £10 K and upwards new. It`s reasonable to expect to get say £6 K for a 2 or 3 yr old good example, BUT as you point out that sort of money will buy a new 650 Royal Enfield for example. The market has been distorted against the premium brands by relatively cheap imports from India and China. In addition,as I have said, the rider demographic has changed as well, plus winter is no good for sales and on top of all that there has been massive cost of living increases.Another factor is the proliferation of lower speed limits and enforcement cameras,so the once sought after high performance bike is less desireable. I didn't take the chance trying to sell my 800 Tiger privately when I got my nearly new Tiger 1200 last month as there are so many for sale in the market, plus I got what I wanted for it and a good price on the 1200 (good time to buy). Funnily enough the dealer sold my old 800 45 mins after I'd picked up the 1200. During and immediately after covid the market was starved of new bikes, so s/h bikes sold like mad. Until recently my 2015 VSrom 650 was still seemingly worth near what I paid for it, despite me nearly doubling the miles on it. Now there are plenty of new bikes, loads of new models being released...oh and winter is on the doorstep. That said, bargains will always sell and Ewa's Tiger was an absolute bargain. As for new with finance.... that's not an option for everyone, not me that's for sure as a retired person on a budget. I have to buy canny, ex demo bikes or recent s/h. If you buy from a dealer you are still paying 20% VAT new or old. Dealer servicing isn't required for warranty work so I can give it a good service every year, even though service intervals are 8000 miles. The cost of living is a big factor. People have money but worry about paying out a lot of money on someting that has no warranty then having no cash if a big bill comes in. Also new bike prices rose steeply and are now falling due to lack of sales but private prices can be ridiculous. In 2015 you could buy a new MT07 for £5700 (£500 less than RRP) a few weeks ago I saw a 2015 MT07 advertised for £5000 lol. Are you kidding? More used bikes are available now precisely because people bought them on credit a couple years when the finance charges were considerably lower than today and before inflation hit them hard forcing them to sell the bikes. It is a buyers market on used bikes now. When covid first hit it was a sellers market on used bikes because there weren't that many new bikes in inventory.
The only thing new bikes got going for them now is lower financing rates than used bikes. My question who is buying new or used with the high financing rates and inflation still banging on at a higher rate than salaries going up?
Inventory on new bikes is up most everywhere because of high financing rates and inflationary pressures is why dealers are discounting new bikes and waiving setup and freight charges.
The buyer is in the driver's seat on new and used bikes only if you don't need to finance the bikes. Unless you can get a new bike discounted enough to offset the higher financing charges buying new is a mistake because new bike residual worth really drops the first couple of years.
Buying used is smarter and you avoid the steep depreciation , high financing, loss of all the new bike add-ons for a new bike. Whatever you save on a new Chinese bike you'll lose all that and more when you try and sell or trade it later.

Good for ya!!!! Selling a used bike requires patience and discernment to sort out the SCAMMERS. I have owned 90 motorcycles/ scooters so I am acquainted with the GAME. Recently, I have been getting offers from local Harley Davidson Dealers on their 23 and 24 bikes, with rediculous 96 month financing!!! To the naive and uninitiated, this sounds great!!!! Until you do all of the MATH and find that a $20,000 bike cost you $35,000----if you keep it, which you won't and then all of the offers on the Bike won't even pay the loan off. I buy new 99% of the time and pay CASH. Current bike is a 2023 Kawasaki Versys 650LT and the last was a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sport and before that a Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster. Im on my 86th bike now
It will not matter if your selling old or new
It will always come down to
Who wants it and how much there prepared to pay
I live up in Cumbria and they generally buy once and keep it for ever, even if they dont like it
When I lived in the south, you could sell very easy as there was a bigger audience
Ive brought new bikes for £15k and done 7k on the clock and after 6 months and no dealer wants it
But when they sell you it they claim the bikes bulletproof and will go around the clock
    Keep it as a spare

Talking of different bikes when I came back from the north as a retired engineer i got into the “I’ve gotta have a bmw gsa 1200 like long way round” well it was certainly the wrong way round for me. Buy a new bike on pcp, for low monthly repayment, have to get it serviced at the dealer, in 3 years give it back, walk away or start another pcp.
No wonder dealers are smiling so much. And make list prices so high its hard to buy them outright. There aren't many incentives to buy outright. Although i do because i kerp them and usually put miles on them.

Dealer has too many overheads to buy a bike at any sort of pallatable price. Trade in might be slightly better. Bottom line with newish S/H bikes is that NO-one has the savings to spend £10k (say) on a bike - but they CAN afford £200/month for a PCP. The sums don't have to stack up - it's the only way they get a bike.

Motorcycle market is collapsing faster than the car market. Manufacturers are supplementing low interest rate loans to move bikes. With sub 2% interest rates for three years is only about $400 in finance charges on a $13k bike loan. Currently if you put $5000 in a high interest savings account for three years at the current rate of 5%, you’ll make $788. So you better off to take the $5k buying a used bike, take the low interest loan and in three years you be up $388.($788-$400 finance charge)

With me, it depends how you look at it. I've only ever bought 2 brand new bikes, one in the 80s and my last one in 2020..
I never bought a brand new bike to make money. I bought one , for the new feel to the bike and sick of buying a few second hand ones , that wasnt worth the price of the handbook..when I priced my bike, for a 2 year old , it was £1500 cheaper, no contest.
Ive spent even more money on mods and its the best bike I've ever had..
I intend to keep the bike for many years, so its value loss is irrelevant.

I'm convinced that car & bike manufacturers are using PCP finance to artificially inflate list prices. If everyone's buying on PCP, the sticker price is irrelevant to the punter, as you only pay the depreciation due over the term you 'rent' the bike for. When you consider the APR rate some manufacturers charge and the fact that dealers configure the numbers around deposits and monthly payments to suit themselves, not you, (it's called front loading), IMO the whole setup is an absolute racket! It's also illegal for a dealer to talk about 'equity' in a deal, too. There is no equity in a bike finance deal - it's a depreciating item, not an asset, like your house, if you're fortunate enough to own one.
I get that many people use PCPs to ride bikes they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise & if you're happy, that's great, but please go into a deal eyes wide open.

prices soared at a stupid rate and people got used to robbing folk, people don't want to pay scalping prices anymore - that is how i see it. My example based on personal sales, i recently sold a 450mx bike for 2k, same bike everyone else is asking 3.5k - pure scalpers, the thing is i could have held onto it and hoped i would find a fool like these others seem to want to but why? i paid 3.5k 7 years ago, normal to lose 2k or more over that time. Perhaps people selling 2nd hand need a quick assessment of whether they actually want to sell or just have something depreciate under their eyes, 2 very different prospects

It happens often if you bought 5 years old. By the time you had finished it was 10 years old. Often things didn't last 10 years. Even if it did by the time it was paid off it was time to start looking again. I believe they are doing used bikes on a PCP now. It's a bloody never ending treadmill for people who borrowed to purchase.

They want us on that treadmill so make it really hard to refuse the deals

I think PCP and low APR finance on new bikes doesn't help the 2nd hand market. I sold a Harley to a dealer in March for 9k, I'd advertised it at 10k and not a sniff, dealer had it without the Mustang seat which i sold for £450 so was happy, the dealer had it up at 10.5k, he still has it and now its £9950 plus he drove 300 miles to collect it. Now is the worst time to sell.

I think you did well out of that one, The Dealer could be sat on the bike for a long time!

I think it will sell very well, the midsize market is growing, people need affordable motorcycles again

Yes it’s nice food and coffee in bridge cafe. I think now is definitely a buyers market and I think dealers will be open to negotiating right now given stock levels

Triumph are bringing a NEW Tiger out with more BHP and a better TFT dash so the older one's become less desirable unless really cheap......
