Stewart takes good care of himself. He’s almost 70 and healthy as a horse.
Not only was Neil an absolute incredible drummer, he was a magnificent human being. Ridiculously intelligent and a wonderful husband and father. He went through hell losing his first wife and daughter yet found the strength to come back from that and found love again. A massive loss.
When you have someone epic on your show like Stewart Copeland, you just let the man talk.

I wasn't so surprised by Jeff Porcaro's passing; he indulged pretty enthusiastically and not only played in Steely Dan and Toto but was a fabulous session player who contributed to many pop hits(I thought he was TOO perfect, kind of) and burned his candle at both ends AND the middle.
Taylor Hawkins was more of a shock, but not after I heard about the Coroner's report. He was "Young at Heart," but he was 50 and had abused the party favors in the past, and he did NOT have a young heart. The wife of his friend Roger Taylor(of Queen) called him "Sunshine in human form," which is how I like to think of him. I'm shocked but I really feel for his family and Dave Grohl, who was an especially close buddy.
Stuart is right, it does seem like it's open season on the "Great Ones." And there's more of them, these of the classic generation of Rockers, who are doubtless being looked at by Father Time every day, these days. Those entertainers, who have been described as "Seat-of-your-pants Shamans," and replacing Religion in Modern Life, have a place in our lives because their music is(and has been) SO important to us. I wish them all Good Fortune and Good Health - and ALL of you reading this, too.

I'm a Rush fan, and like every other Rush fan, had no idea Neil was ill, and therefore no time to prepare the incredibly jarring news of his death. For Foo Fighter fans it was the same gut punch. So, I want to share something with Foo Fighter fans.
You might worry about your ability to feel the joy in their music, and maybe wonder if it is permanently gone for you. I worried about that when Neil died, that the soundtrack of my life might never bring me joy again. I didn't listen to Rush for a few weeks after Neil died, and I was careful not to push it. I chose my "first song back" carefully, and I don't remember anymore but I think it was "How it is" or maybe "Ghost Rider". But I could only listen to studio versions at that time. The joy was still there. It was buried under a mountain of sadness for sure, but it was still there. Live recordings were too much for me at the time. Too direct. No studio buffer, it was listening directly to that which was lost. It then took a bit longer for me to watch a live performance. I'm not trying to map out a blueprint for anybody, I just want to share this very simple and important message: the joy you found in Foo Fighter music is still there. It is burdened by sadness right now, but the joy is still there, waiting for you whenever you're ready. Hang in there, Foo fans.

I still find myself sitting in my car with a knot in my throat listening to some FF music playing on the radio.
Neil's death hit me like a ton of bricks, but I had read about his battle, so I was kind of aware. But as you and Copeland say, that gut punch of a sudden death, the disbelief, the vain hope that it's all a lie, that's just too much to take in.

@@Frontdesk99 I remember reading about it in Rolling Stone mag, that he was wheelchair bound. So even when he tried to keep it on the low, the news were out there for some time .
@@Frontdesk99 Forgive me. ATTENTION ALL PRETEND "RUSH FANS", WHO WEREN'T AWARE THAT NEIL PEART WAS ILL. Frontdesk99 was aware that Neil had a Gioblastoma tumor that was slowly killing him starting about 18 months after Rush's last tour ended. Only BIG Rush fans, such as Frontdesk99, were intimately aware of his condition.
Having been born in the late 60s and grown up with Rush, it's still hard for me to get used to this world without Neil in it. RIP Professor.

I'm 54 years old. Ringo, Bonham, and Peart are my drumming idols. But, Stewart is right. Taylor was so full of energy and life in general. One of the ultimate fanboys. He was always smiling. What a loss to all the young drummers that idolized him.
He was also a major drug user.

It‘s not tragic. It‘s drug abuse with fatal repercussions. Not the first, not the last, but it was his own call.

My heart and my soul when I was a kid was all rush and Neil Pier started playing drums because of him but to find out that Stewart Copeland was one of his influences in 1980 I jumped on that Stewart Copeland boat and never looked back since

as a big RUSH fan its nice to hear stories ,Copeland was there ,you can see he misses him like us fans do . Neil passing hit me hard like the music stopped ,for me its taking awhile to get back into music again ,and rock out feeling old .

Everyone is a product of their influences but Taylor seemed to be that and more so. He never put limits on himself and he enjoyed being able to play so many styles. He was like a jukebox because he emulated all of his heroes. Beyond hitting things in patterns, what hurts the most about him leaving was the joy he brought to his bands, his fans, and obviously his family. He oozed camaraderie with every musician past and present.

As a fellow drummer the thing I loved about Taylor the most was he was just one of us living the dream. He even had his own cover band just for the sheer fun of it! Clearly did it for the love not the money. RIP T!
Yes! I loved how he paid homage to classic songs and didn't let his stardom determine the shows he played.
You can tell he really liked sharing his love of rock with others. I've seen videos of him doing little drum sessions with schoolkids, and apparently he did some charity work with the Midnight Mission to help the homeless. He was an unpretentious and charitable soul.
He was so grounded and humble, he called his band "The Coattail Riders", a nod at cashing in on his mentor/friend Dave Grohl's success. I loved Taylor and his playing, and still cannot believe he is gone. As a singing drummer, Dave and Taylor felt like kin that I idolized.

It is not a curse. Each drummer died for a different reason. All of them were great accomplished drummers loved by their fans. Great that Stewart is still going strong.

Taylor was humble and just your regular guy. He never let his ego get in the way. His lust for life and energy was amazing. Just shocking. His short time here was full of living life to the fullest. If only he could see how much he was loved.

Neil's passing was right up there with John Bonham's passing for me. Taylor seemed like a good spirit and was rapidly progressing in becoming one of the greats and just like that he's gone. I hope his wife and family are doing well he was liked by many. Thank you Stewart for your insight it's always a pleasure as you bring clarity to the situation.
lol he really wasn't that good.. Taylor was a pretty unremarkable drummer. He was good, sure. Did he do anything that changed drumming the way the others you named did? Hell no lmao. He played in a pop band.
I would consider him a good drummer but only for Rock. Therecsre so many great drummers like for jazz thatscthe category where i will pick the best drummer. Like Dave weckl, Vinnie Collauta, Manu Katche and Jeff Porcaro these are the ones that are great drummers.

@@davidrice3337 Well it's really about the impact that John and Neil had on my life as someone that learned a great deal from both. The key word here is "impact" in terms of their level of play and respect for their style and knowledge.
@@michaelcruz7704 I like everyone you mention and would add Steve Gadd, Danny Carey, both Portnoy and Mangini, and so many more that were a little more advanced than Taylor but with all do respect he did grow a great deal while playing with the Foos and was admired by many.
I don't think these talented people realize at all just how dear they are to their casual or crazy fans. Their circle of influence is vast and I really wish we all realized just how important we all are and the shock and sadness that happens when you are gone.
We need to tell them more while they are here!
That was great. I love Stewart. Between the insanity of our current world and the rapid loss of the guys that we came of age with, it's "another humiliating kick in the crotch."

Stewart is absolutely right...while we remember those who have passed let us also see those still here like Phil Collins. Like him or not for his songs as a drummer he was one of the best. It would be very wrong to guess but clearly his health is not good. stay safe all x
Neil's passing hit me hard, very hard. He did live a wonderful, talented life, even though he had a whole in his Bubba heart from the losses of his wife and daughter.

Glad to see this on UA-cam. Huge FF fan and Police fan. I can't absorb what has happened with Taylor. It makes me cry and I can't even get past my hallway of framed Foo Fighters artwork by Dave Klok. It's too much. And Dave---man, on every single level it's a gut punch. A total gut punch with every thought or memory. This is going to be tougher than anything he's been through. If people like me, a Foo lover from THE start are struggling with Taylor's passing, I can only imagine and pray for Allision, David and the huge Foo Family. Thanks Stewart for saying what I along with millions of others are feeling still two weeks and two days later. Can't get over it, He's too big to just say, Oh well.......

I thought the same thing, open season on drummers! It seems like being a drummer in a band should get hazardous pay. The Beach Boys, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, and of course,The Who. It seems like it has always been open season on drummers.
my two cents (as a drummer) would say the physical abuse / pain and stamina it takes to play the drums - especially at a professional level - can lead to some bad self medicating and or performance enhancers.. you are literally a human shock absorber if you think about it.

My drummer friend was crushed about Charlie and we talked a lot. Then Taylor passed and I found that so Devastating. All respects to Taylors loved ones. So sorry for your loss of your friend. I have been Studying drumming (still beginner level). Had only recently fallen in love with the Foos and Taylor, after reading Daves book and watching many vids. I LOVE their new album. RIP🎶🥁

I definitely recommend finding a great teacher, as I did not learn the fundamentals when I was young and thus had some bad habits to try to undo... orlandodrummer is an incredible teacher on YT u might check out, he crushes. rock on.

As sad as I and so many fans are about Taylor's shocking sudden passing, and with all due respect (which is huge!) Can't help but reflect on the Spinal Tap concept that rock drummers have a legacy of untimely demise. They might not just explode on stage, but of all the noteworthy drummer deaths in the past 50 years almost no one had any idea that Taylor Hawkins, an extremely youthful energetic force, would be joining that club. Yeah, Stewart, watch your back. The drummer demon still comes around. Let's hope the FFs keep it strong with RIPs for those souls who have left the stage.
I've been saying the same thing. I cried over Neil Peart, and was sad about Charlie, now Taylor is beyond tragic. Such a warm hearted, energetic, talented guy. Rip.

Cool interview. I know The Police had a huge impact on Rush and Neil especially. You can definitely hear the influence of their music in the early 80's Rush albums.

When we don't remember peoples names sometimes it's called age....The one thing I love about Stewart is you can't keep this energizer bunny down the man who reinvented how to play drums, very inspiring even at his age he is still a WAYOUT cause that's where the fun is WAYOUT WAYOUT !!!!

I'm 63, & i often forget people's names....that I usually know with no problem. it especially happens when I'm trying too hard to think of the person's name. same thing goes with playing an instrument; if u try too hard to play something.....that's when the mistakes come.
sorry to bring up the Studio 666 movie....but it REALLY gives me the creeps, especially after what has happened to Taylor. he was the one in the trailer, that mocked their was anything strange or evil going on...& then, Grohl kills him with a cymbal of all things. I get a bad vibe from Grohl in the last few years or so....I didn't get that at all with Taylor Hawkins. He did, look really tired...or strung out in some of the recent pictures though.....but, not evil in any way. I play drums, bass & Pedal Steel Guitar. I stopped playing drums professionally because of health problems related to age....it's such a physically demanding instrument. I still play for my own pleasure....& jam with others though.
I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks....since the late 70's....not stage fright really, that doesn't bother me very much that people are watching me play. I have panic attacks anywhere...I could be sitting at home. I do medicate myself, via Valium Rx's from my doctor...& don't even have them.....as long as I take my 2 Valium a day, thank God. sometimes a THC gummy too. stopped drinking in 93.
sorry for the long winded comment here.....but don't get involved in satanic crap...& it is that, crap. I was heavily involved in the occult in the late 70's & most of the 80's...thankfully I turned away from it...& have been a Christian since the late 80's. I had some REALLY intense "warnings"...so I rebuked any involvement in the occult, witchcraft, etc.
Man, I wish Taylor was still alive & playing his butt off. Taylor's death seems the most unfair in the last few years. I'm still in shock over this. I wasn't surprised, when Ginger died. I knew SOMETHING was not right with Neil....because he just stopped playing his chosen instrument. Charlie Watts was old...so I wasn't surprised...but I'm always shocked when anyone dies.
I hope & I pray that Stewart is with us for a long time to come. Stewart has been one of my favorite drummers since the 80's. Such a tasteful & awesome drummer!! Love his style of playing. Neil was my drum hero as well.

I'm also a drummer, 56, I play in my bedroom, no bands since the late 90s, you're right too much responsibility, I also have anxiety and panic disorder, I take Xanax ,1 mg 4× a day. I can't sleep without it, power nap yes not real sleeping

Oh, what state are you in? I'm sick of AZ...& their BS about benzos being SO bad for you. I will be moving back east. The antidepressants gave me terrible side effects...so, it's BS. Valium saved me from not having a life...& it didn't give me dementia, etc. It's CONTROL from the damn government. I have a friend in SC that has NO problems getting them from his PCP...& a friend in CT. No problem getting them. Xanax in their case too. Xanax actually gives me blackouts....so I take Valium. It works the best for me. Yeah, I cant fall asleep without my Valium.
What did Geezer say? Very curious. He was awesome in his day!! I played in a pickup band, & the bass player...& older guy, said his daughter is married to Geezer Butler.

There is a video of Taylor Hawkins playing at Toronto Canada with the Foo Fighters. It was Taylor's birthday. He started his drum solo then took a side tour. Then Geddy and Alex came on stage! Then they played YYZ with Taylor. You could tell that this was the BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER! Look it up!

Very well spoken Stewart. I want to tell you before you go (hopefully not for a long time!!) what an inspiration you have been to me with all your musical accomplishments and unique drumming style. Also the energy and fearlessness which you pursue the many different musical projects you involve yourself with. The Rhythmatist to start!!!!!
Copeland is a very underrated drummer. In high school (shortly after Bonham died), the debate was Peart vs. Copeland.
The only thing with which I disagree is the idea that it's even possible for Taylor to have not known how much he meant to people. I feel like, even while he was here, nobody was shy about expressing how much we appreciated him. RIP TH

Truly a humble and amazing man, we have had some incredible guitarist with us as well. working on a clipp from Noel Hogan from the Cranberries as we speak, would love input from other guitarist on what is most moving in his interview.
@@DystopiaTonight I think this is up there - when Stuart talks about the losses of some inspirational drummers it’s really sobering - I’ve never seen quite the reaction on social media to Taylors passing - felt even more impactful than the loss of some other great musicians in recent years in terms of attention and we have lost far to many great musicians - the legacy that these people leave is just unbelievable

I have the absolute love/admiration for, in my opinion the most incredible and intelligent drummer thus far, maybe of all times to come as well, so having said that, I would VERY, VERY much like to hear ALEX, GEDDY and Stewart Copeland record ANYTHING together, I sense I'm not alone
Taylor Hawkins great drummer who will definitely be missed. I remember when Taylor was interviewed by Rhythm he wanted less to talk about himself and more about his love of other drummers especially Roger Taylor and years later he was given the chance to edit Rhythm and who did he choose to interview Rufus Taylor, Roger’s son. They say never meet your heroes but I met DH Peligro and hung out with him one night and a nicer geezer you couldn’t meet.
Taylor loved Stewart Copeland as much as I do, and my room was plastered in Police posters.
We all need to appreciate the worlds greatest drummers - and none more so than the unique and incomparable talent of Stewart Copeland

Steve Jordan is an absolute beast. Most people never listen to the 2 live Blues Brothers albums which he absolutely destroys on..
In the stages of grief, I am still mad at Taylor for putting himself in that position.

I am surprised he was left on his own, in Colombia of all places, to get into so much trouble. Damn shame.

I think it’s quite possible that the other people in his room were doing the hard drugs (supposedly) found in his room, he may not have used them. Not sure I’d believe any reporter who could be a paid off puppet of B*g Ph*rma. It definitely could be myocarditis from the jab. Lots of people worldwide, athletes especially, are being injured with heart issues, blood clots, & strokes. & many have passed away.
We still don't know what caused it tho, he had drugs in his system yes, but they may have not been lethal doses, taking antidepressants for his mental could've been taking the painkillers due to the fact that's he's 50, a drummer, and traveling all around the world, that shit takes a toll on your body, he may have taken a light dose just to cope with the pain but his heart gave out. I'd have a hard time believing he was doing drugs to get high and od'd under those circumstances

Drumming is not the recipefor longevity it seems most of the greats gone too soon. Heres wishing good health to Stuart with Neils passing he is now the greatest rock drummer still living and as such a world treasure RIP Neil and Taylor whenever I hear thunder I'll know you guys are up there doing your thing.

My friend had tickets to an upcoming show.
I had never been.
But was enjoying how the Foo was doing so much old music. And the videos of new music.
My son plays bass.
I had shared recently the books.
I just read Dave's Mom Cradle to Stage. Loved it. So relate to it with so much.
I will miss seeing Taylor play. He was so talented.
I remember the sadness of Jon Lennon.
But this so sad to me because he was so full of life.
His kids and wife. I pray they have peace. Its hard.
So thankful for all the music we can listen to for the memories.

Only saw Stewart play once about 20 years ago in Vancouver with Oysterhead - he was simply incredible even way up in the balcony.
As for Taylor -still in shock, he was just bursting with energy and childlike wonder. Really wish I would have seen him play live.. fck, an unfortunate reminder hard drugs are undefeated.
