I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Born in Fort Worth Texas, drummer Taylor Hawkins was the youngest of three siblings having a mother and father who seemed like polar opposites. According to Rolling Stone he would describe his father as and i quote “stony coldness, typical of a Seventies man,”, while mother was and i quote full of love, sweetness, and tenderness, and the total opposite of my dad.” His mother encouraged Taylor to become a musician.
His family would relocate to Laguna beach when he was 5 years old. Hawkins would tell the BBC that at the age of 10 he had a neighbour who had an old drum kit and a few beat up guitars and by this point in his life he didn’t excel at anything including academics and sports. Hawkins would admit that he initially wanted to play guitar but it seemed like too much work to him and his neighbour encouraged him to try the drums. After observing Hawkins play he would tell him and i quote “you’re a drummer.’
In December of 1995 Grohl would meet hawkins for the first time at the KROQ almost acoustic christmas concert where both foo fighters and alanis morisette were on the bill. Grohl would recall meeting hawkins for the first time saying ‘we got along like brothers from the second we met. We were best friends from that moment with taylor hawkins adding in the book ‘this is a call “i was this little dork playing in this back up band and the first thing that struck me was that dave was really nice and fun to hang out with. I’d met some other people from big bands musicians i’d looked up to and when i met them the vibe was oh you’re not important. Hawkins who was a huge fan of nirvana and foo fighters first record noticed a camaraderie and likeness between himself and grohl as they smoked together and talked about their favourite music. They would reconnect the summer of 1996 when they played some shows together in europe.Hawkins would admit that alanis morissette predicted he would join foo fighters at the time telling the Daily Mirror “We met the Foo Fighters when I was still playing with her, and she said, 'Dave [Grohl]’s gonna ask you to join them someday.' She called it a year before it happened."
The following year in 1997, Grohl was now without a drummer. He would call up hawkins to see if he knew any good drummers. Keep in mind foo fighters were still an up and coming band and were nowhere near as popular as they are today . Grohl would recall that conversation with hawkins “he said ‘f*** yeah i’ll do it. I reminded him we weren’t selling out stadiums like alanis and he said ‘i don’t care man i just want to be in a f***** rock band. To Hawkins alanis was a solo act and he wanted to play more hard rock music. The move surprised Grohl who told entertainment weekly I thought he would never leave Alanis’ band. At the time, they were packing stadiums around the world. And what, he’s going to jump in our red Dodge van and play the f**** Viper Room again?”
The on-boarding process for Hawkins wasn’t smooth though. The first day of rehearsals guitarist Pat Smear announced he was quitting the band telling Grohl and company they should consider being a three piece. The band was in a tough spot having already booked a tour and having their second album to promote.. For Smear he was tired of life on the road and was eldest band member. The band managed to talk smear to stay in the band for another six months until they found a replacement which they did in Grohl’s old scream bandmate Franz Stahl. ’ Taylor’s first show with foo fighters would happen on april 19, 1997 at a secret gig in santa monica at the alligator lounge. The band would spend the next year and a half on the road.
The band would get off the road in 1998 and Grohl gave some insights into where the band’s third record could go in the book this is a call “now i’m looking forward to our next record more than i ever have been. For a while i was thinking. God what are we gonna do for our next record. Taylor plays piano and guitar and writes songs and sings. Nate writes stuff. It’s just gonna be the frea
Favourite Foo Fighters album and song? For me it's The Colour and Shape, but favourite song is from their third record, Aurora.
@@michaelmichaels138 Oooh No! I just burned a joint a cpl minutes ago!
Am i gonna die?!?
Great song. "Aurora" is named after Aurora Ave in Seattle. Kurt Cobain used to go to a motel on Aurora to shoot up. Though that's not what the song is about. One of my favorite songs is "Stacked Actors" 🍻
Favorite song is The Pretender, The Colour and Shape is undoubtedly their best album.
Everlong and Learning To Fly.
While Colour And The Shape is the legendary Foo Fighters album I think that their best album is Echoes, Silence, Patience, And Grace. I’ve been a fan of the Foos literally since the first album, but I wasn’t a hardcore fan until Echoes. I never thought of them really as very capable musicians until then. They were just fun. Echoes, Silence, Patience, And Grace changed all of that for me. That album was a masterpiece. All of the songs are crafted so well. It was no longer punk rock dynamics. It wasn’t just about the energy. The songs would build up progressively with layers of instrumentation. There was a real fine art to it. And after all of that I see a change in the Foo Fighters with no longer writing a bunch of songs, but writing a whole album. Every album from Echoes and after is written more as a complete album.
The drummer who lost his singer, and the singer who lost his drummer 😪😪 God bless Dave, and R.I.P Taylor
RIP musical angels of the earth
That says it all.
You're a fool.
Dave is the head of Foo but Taylor was the heart. The first tribute show was beautiful and seeing his son play like his dad got me in the feels.
The tribute show was amazing. Especially Taylor's son performing My Hero
It's so sad, he was such a badass of a drummer
can't agree more sad he is gone
And he seemed like mostly a positive type of guy. We needed more of that.
I loved watching him play the drums...he was always SO into it!! I would get amped up just watching him play...you could FEEL his energy!
He will be greatly missed...😢
Foo Fighters wasn't Foo Fighters without Taylor: the first record is pretty much Dave Grohls' demos recorded all by himself and "The Colour and the Shape" has Dave's caveman pounding style of drumming from his Nirvana days all over it.
Foo Fighters stepped out of grunge's shadows on their next album. Aside from the drums, Taylor brought a sense of humility on a group dynamic where Dave was always at the top of hierarchy.
Now my personal opinion is that Taylor is a more complex drummer than Dave and he was soon to leave a bigger mark outside the band, musically speaking. And without Taylor, Foo Fighters is just Dave Grohl's solo career/project like Probot.
Unfortunately, Taylor's gone too soon.
You know what I've come to hate the term grunge, I listened to nevermind for the first time in 20 years yesterday that shits just straight up rock n roll they're the only band from that era I can listen to and actually feel good afterward which is why I stopped listening to AIC Soundgarden and all that lot because it just bummed me out.
I actually loved the first Foo fighters album and couldn't really get into the newer stuff.
@@whatwouldroddypiperdo2092 I think aic is the best band to come out of Seattle and Layne was one of the best frontmen ever, he's tied for first with Ronnie James Dio.
@@jbsully2864 Don't get it twisted, Layne was an amazing singer, AIC were a great band I still love their music my point is simply everytime I listen to them I wanna fucking hang myself lmfao
The first album was the best and none have compared to it since imo. That first one was perfection, like Foxy Shazam's "Welcome to the Church of R&R", or The Darkness' "Permission to Land." All killer, no filler.
He was a very bright spot in life. His smile lit up wherever he was.
Through thick and thin, Dave and Taylor were a match made in heaven.
Taylor was such a likeable guy. He complimented Dave Grohl, they both had such star quality.
They looked alike in some ways, enough to look like biological brothers, rather than spiritual & musical brothers alone.
I feel so bad for Dave --- he's had to bury two famous bandmates from drug addiction
@@twistoffate4791 It was kind of like a Neanderthal look. With no disrespect of coures.
@@fredwerza3478 they still haven't given a cause of death...just because a person has drugs in their system that doesn't mean that's what killed them...if they thought it was an overdose they would have listed that as cause of death...RIP Taylor.
Kurt, Taylor, then he loses his Mom for Christ's sake. Dave knows pain, and I feel for him.
OMG i didn't know about his mom...my heart is. Broken for him
We ALL know pain. It's part of being human.
And lots of us know that feeling but then all that pain under the eye of the intire world? I don't think i could deal with that factor
I’m pretty sure his mom is still alive and that it was a hoax
his mom didn't pass away
Love how Dave said you couldn't find a better drummer when he himself is a drummer any band would love to have. One of the must level handed ppl. In music
Amazing, badass, unforgettable drummer! I like Foo Fighters, but it's hard to think about the band without Taylor Hawkins.
rip Taylor Hawkins what a good drummer he was
I hope to God Dave is well… I have a lot of friends that have passed this way as well, i felt bad watching the show. When he did times like these, Taylor’s son can really play well too
Clot shot got him we all know.
I will never stop missing him. His passion inspired me so much and I can't believe he's gone...
Such a sad end, thanks for the time you gave us 🌎 RIP Taylor 💔👊🏼
Thank you again Taylor, you were a beast on the kit! Keep smashing those skins up there dude!! Peace 🤙🏼
One of my favorite bands of all time. I had goosebumps through most of this video, knowing how it ended. My heart breaks for Taylor's family.
Amazing drummer.. seeing the Foos live is awesome show.. Hawkins drumming made me wanna pick up a pair of drum 🥁 sticks.. RIP Taylor Hawkins
Taylor Hawkins is one of my biggest inspirations as a drummer, I want to play like he did with all that energy and nuance but with my own twists, with this tattoo on my shoulder I plan to honour him and remember him every time I play, he is a legend now and forever. Rest in Piece Taylor
Great video.
Dave must feel cursed. Losing two friends who were also awesome musicians and band mates. It's not his fault. But I know he has to feel like it sometimes
He wasn’t friends with Kurt
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 wtf are you talking about? He talked endlessly about how much Kurt's death affected him. They absolutely were friends.
Imagine how Pat Smear feels. Before he was in Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Pat played guitar in The Germs. Their lead singer also committed suicide.
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 he lived with Kurt .
@@samod7550 Imagine if he told the media “well we were estranged by that point and when he died it was a thousand pond weight off my shoulders and a relief, wasn’t sad”. Not saying that’s how he feels but its very narrow and limited insofar as acceptability in what he could say. Imagine the backlash if he said anything else. It’s cute how you believe whatever a public figures tells you to believe though. Even in other interviews he has hinted he has never disclosed how he felt and that he will never share the real story. By all accounts Nirvana was about to break up and Dave was on bad terms with Kurt.
Taylor and Dave were so tight. You always saw that at every show and during interviews. It’s not easy to play drums for a guy like Dave Grohl who could very easily cut his own parts. Taylor took that role seriously and with such passion. Dave didn’t have to worry about it. Dave Grohl is more passionate about drums than guitar. But Dave only had to focus on guitar with Taylor playing drums. It’s a huge load taken off him. If the Foo Fighters disband after this I understand it. It’s not likely that Dave Grohl will get this type of camaraderie for drums again with someone else.
How do you know Dave is more passionate about drums then guitar????
@@danevertt3210 haha, personally I guess I don’t. But he has mentioned several times in interviews that he’s not really a guitar player. Somewhere if you can find a video where he explains how he wrote the song “Everlong” he mentions that he approaches playing guitar as if it were a drum set. So he plays lower strings in the place of the kick and upper strings in the place of snare and cymbals. It could be a misnomer for me to make that as a definitive statement of Grohl being more passionate about drums, but that is 100% what I get from him.
I like this video.
I just wish we had these intimate stories about these people before they pass.
R.I.P. Taylor
SO sad rn..
His son!🤔😔
I saw Foo Fighters at the Taylor Hawkins tribute act and I loved every minute of it. I’ll never get that experience again
Tragic!!🤦R.I.P Mr. Hawkins . May your soul now fine forever peace 🕊️
I live in Bogota, this was a total shock for everyone, people were waiting for the Foo to take the stage when they were told Taylor died. He also had cocaine on his blood at the time of death and was at an even better hotel than the Four Seasons, it's safe to say he had a pretty good time
Yeah, I highly doubt he died from cocaine. He was jab resistant and for the right reasons but was coerced by Dave to take the jab to tour
@@pamelapalmer239 what makes you think he wouldn't have died from cocaine (or crack cocaine-i mean if it were crack there's an even higher chance of heart trouble because of the route of administration but a toxicology report would only show up as cocaine) if he definitely did have it in his bloodstream? More likely that than benzos and heroin if we're speculating it was definitely drugs that killed him seeing as he called to say he had chest pain-benzo and opiate overdoses rarely give a person to even reach a phone when they overdose, I can attest to that unfortunately-its far more likely to cause death by your breathing slowing then stopping which takes a little while. Although I may be missing something because I don't know what you mean by "jab resistant"-ive never heard that phrase before
Well I'm not sure about "good time", I get why your saying that but getting high doesn't necessarily mean your having fun
-if he had been clean for a while there's a good chance something may have been bothering him personally before he went back to using again 😔 at least he's left a legacy though and kids through the years will pick up Foo Fighters albums and be inspired by him 👍
@@teethgrinder83 The vx can cause myocarditis especially in skinny fit people,.. i'm not gonna debate you about this, because it's futile.,.. but if you can't see that it's even a possibility that the vx caused this? You're naive.
England just released a report saying 1000 EXTRA people are dying every month from mysterious circumstances., this is 1000 above the statistical average, are not Covid deaths. What do you think is suddenly causing that?
Climate change? Duuuuuuuuh,....
@@teethgrinder83 I'm not quite certain I know what jab resistant means, either. Either way, there are some names you hear when death comes and you find yourself wishing it would be someone else... someone not doing much with life. I wish he could've lived. Too late to dwell long on it.
Excellent
Man, that shit broke my heart when I heard that news…
I can’t even begin to imagine the pain the Dave was dealing with.
This being the second time he’s lost a close friend and an important band member.
That kind of trauma leave your heart scarred .
When geddy and Alex of rush played..they miss Neil.. dave playing drums missing Taylor..dave and Taylor love rush..rush loves them ❤
Here’s the story of Foo Fighters first drummer William Goldsmith and why he left the band ua-cam.com/video/L24WI6mruHA/v-deo.html
I’d imagine he left because he didn’t get to play anything other than what Dave wrote, drummed and recorded. He’s a 1 man recording machine and only needs band members to play the music live with him. That’s no secret…
Amazing drummer saw him in 1998 2000 & 2003
Enlarged 💛
SAD AF REST IN POWER TAYLOR
Hawkins had great musical idols.
One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Nothing pretentious about him
One of the nicest guys you never met but yeah, close enough…
hard to be pretentious when you’re the drummer for Foo Fighters
@stevensherrier I'm not going to guess on what you have or haven't done in your life, because even I met Taylor Hawkins really really briefly and got a drumstick from him at end Fest in 1997 or 98 (need to look through old stuff of mine) seeing them live after they got done playing they shook hands with myself and people in the front same with Dave Grohl and the rest of the band we met
also they all seemed really nice. And really rocked!!
@@ssherrierable Taylor Hawkins was an extremely accessible person. He was always out and about, and would often stop and have actual conversations with his fans. I'm sorry that nothing like that has ever happened for you (maybe it's your negative vibe?) but many of us had the opportunity to meet Taylor, and he was very much a friendly guy who seemed to enjoy talking to people.
You know how no one wants to be "that guy?" Well @steven sherrier is "that guy!!" 🙋♂
Did you have to post this today of all days?
R.I.P. Taylor My favorite Foo Fighter
He was great on the Gong Show
Chevy Metal. Damn, that's a good band name. Can't believe I'd never heard that before.
Did he die on the Pfizer or Moderna tour? I️ know it wasn’t that long ago but I️ get confused.
He died on the South American tour
God bless
So sad, I was shocked when I heard of this .
I knew Taylor a bit and he told me he hated the Foo Fighters music and fans, but he liked the big money
Rip💖👏👍😎
i saw him with allanis morresette in 1995ish,
Hey. Did you ever talk about Tina Bell?

May he rest peacefully.
Friends don't let friends...
Rip god 🙏🙏 bless
I remember when "The Colour and the Shape" came out when I was 14 or 15, skipping school with my partner of (it ended up being) 3yrs, good times. I know Hawkins didn't really (if at all, I'm not sure) play on that album but nevertheless it's brought back good memories to think of it and those days again. If I'm honest I kinda fell out of listening to them a couple years afterwards though but RIP Mr Taylor, I get what he might have been going through, I stopped benzos and heroin a while ago and thank goodness for that because that shit doesn't discriminate 😔 But he's left a huge legacy so while it's disastrous what's happened there will be kids picking up Foo Fighters albums for years and years and being inspired by his drumming and I'm sure that would make him happier than ever
He was an awesome drummer, but I want to see a video on pat. Pat smear is so underrated. Even in the germs when he was much younger, he played on stage the same skill level as Lorna, Don and darby, but he could play all the queen and yes songs. I just love the germs.
RIP....
Miss you so much bro.❤😢🙊🙉🙈
R.I.P.🥁🤘
I really hope Taylor and Curt are up in heaven and at peace --- they seem like troubled souls here on Earth
Taylor Hawkins is one of the top 10 best drummers of all time. I feel sorry for Dave Grohl since Dave lost two iconic friends in the rock industry (one being Taylor and the other being Kurt Cobain).
Speaking of icons, I can't wait until next month when R N' R Stories covers the 2-year anniversary of Eddie Van Halen's passing.
I don't feel bad for Dave, I feel bad for Taylor, the guy who admitted of having a troubled relationship with drugs in the past and unfortunately relapsed. This didn't help either:
"Even though friends say Hawkins told Grohl and Foo Fighters’ management he wanted to scale back, they believe he agreed to continue touring with them to be a team player. '[A band like that] is a big machine [with] a lot of people on the payroll,' Cameron says. 'So you’ve got to really be cognizant of the business side of something when it’s that big and that has inherent pressure, just like any business.'
(...) Foo Fighters staged roughly 40 shows last year, and already had nearly 60 more on the books for 2022." (Rolling Stone, May 16, 2022)
It doesn't really matter who said what, the fact is Foo Fighters had one of the most brutal tour schedules in today's music/entertainment.
He was a good drummer, but definitely wasn't in "the top 10 best drummers of all time". He wasn't even the best drummer in Foo Fighters.
🤣🤣🤣
He was a decent drummer,. not even close to being in the top ten though.
Money doesn't equal talent,. Sorry.
I could name 10 drummer's/drummers that you probably have never even heard of before?
All of them drummers that Taylor would bow to himself.
His mom just died too.
Soo sad😢

It was lovely seeing Taylor’s son Shane play the drums w them
he was a cool dude. Not much of a fan of Foo but when he was the drummer for Alanis Morisette I thought he was smoking. That song "you oughta know" he's ruling those drums. He's missed. Was shocked when i heard he passed. Only the good die young, and the evil that men do lives on and on . . .RIP Taylor ain't gotta bad word to say about you.
Everything you said David is 100% the same thoughts I have on Mr Hawkins from start to finish sir. It's the perfect comment 💯🤝
That was well researched. Gave a thumbs up. As for Taylor I have to wonder what exactly happened? He was in recovery and being an active drug addict myself I could only wonder what was going thru his mind in Bogota Columbia(coke capital of the world). I don't believe the tox screen results at time of death. He had an enlarged heart(me too from years of smoking coke). Maybe relapsed but idk, nevertheless he was a great drummer and many things but most of all he was a great human being. God bless. And just for today do not do drugs, especially you children, you have no idea how bad drugs are, please don't even try. Marijuana is ok but the powders(coke, heroin, cystal meth). Beware of alcohol, get you physically addicted and that is bad!!!!!! You will suffer while kicking booze.
