- 1/10 RWD drifting. This is our MST RMX2.0 kit. Great car that we have had a lot of fun with.
One question I have had is why do we use these hard plastic tires instead of foam or rubber tires? What would happen if we did use foam or rubber tires?
I asked around, and most people thought it wouldn't work. The car wouldn't have enough power to drift. Sooo, I bought some to test!
Running them in my garage, I was very surprised by the results. Watch through the video and let me know your thoughts. Which tire would you rather use?

This! This is the video I've been looking for. I wanted to do a grip/drift car without doing a AWD touring car but I wondered how it would react with grip tires. This answers all my questions. Thanks!!

It really does better than I expected. The only thing I would be concerned about over time is the transmission gears. They are all plastic and doing too many hard launches with sticky tires might strip them. Otherwise, it handles pretty well.

We took the time a few years ago to paint and add lights. Made a huge difference.
Either way it drifts no matter what you put on , the floor has helps with the drifting 👍 fantastic test video ,really enjoyed it 👍😁👍

I have all Vaterra, Kyosho cars like the 72 Camaro, 69 Mustang, Challenger, Chevelle, 72 Trans AM, 72 C10, etc, and love to only drive them in the garage and church gym floors with a lot of space to scale I do not want to scratch them. I just got today an MST RMX 2.0 AMG GT3 I wanted a real drifter like the one in this video and how you have compared them vs AWD. I have no drift tracks in my area so I was going to use rubber tires on the MST and maybe if I find a group put the drift tires back on and/or play both in the garage or gym. This example video was great for a 49yr grandfather just getting into the hobby was what I needed to see. I do need to find out how to adjust my suspension on the MST drifter all new but looks like you kept it the same for rubber tires. Again...appreciate you for this test Sir.

Nice video! I enjoyed the experimentation, usually things are pretty standard with RWD drift!! Though I have experimented with another compound which I think is maybe even more enjoyable!! You definitely need to do a shootout when my research is done🍇

Nice video I built a 4wd drift car with rubber front wheels and hard plastic on the back it was doing donuts only then I added a gyro now it drifts like a dream you can high speed drift too its awesome u should try it bro 💪💪👍👊

Interesting.. :) But I kinda expected the results.. Still runs great, but with more grip. You're looking at more of a race car as appose to a drift Car... Very cool driving though and I bet she rides smoother on rougher terrains as well .. Roads driveways etc.... Thanks for sharing

Cheap or not K-Force Racing makes great tires...One of the best $20 I ever spent was on K-Force Racing SCT wheels and tires..I didn't know they made foams though..I might need to get some for my Euro Man Truck

We do use a drift specific gyro.
In this car, the Futaba GYD450.

Do you think the foams would wear out quickly if you Drift on parking loat concrete? Assuming you have the power to do it?
Yes! Those foams will die quite quickly on anything but a smooth surface.

I have a Redcat Lightning EPX drift stock that I put an XQ Viper TA body I installed blue halo headlights lights in on it and I was thinking of trying rubber or Contact foam grip tires (wider 30 mm to the back so it is a bit more true to the wider rear on real Viper TAs) to test a speed run. Drift tires spin on the pavement too much to try this with and have a hard time getting the car uphill as there is a bit of a hill where I run. I believe I could make good use of the stock power this car has that the drift tires just can't put to the pavement. As far as drifting with this thing, it is loads of fun. However, it is 4WD. Is 2 wheel RWD harder to master drifts with like with real cars?
RWD vs AWD is a huge debate.
For me, I really prefer the driving style of a RWD, and believe once the car is setup correctly, it is actually easier to control precise lines with.
My Redcat AWD car will do massive powerslides and things of that sort- but getting it to precisely enter a corner and hold a line through it is very difficult.
If there is a drift track near you, or others who drift RWD, then I would highly suggest trying it. If not, stick with the fun of AWD.

That is basically how it works. You probably would also be driving on different surfaces. Imagine how different these results would have been on regular concrete or asphalt!

Wonder how the plastic diff gear would hold up in the mst if you drove with grippy tyres all the time. Is there a metal tooth diff for the mst rmx 2.0? I'm thinking I'd getting one but I'm put off now since I realised the diff is plastic geared, kind of leaning towards the sakura d4 since the belt set up seems less likely to strip. I'd want to be driving it outside with rubber tyres most of the time
Honestly, if you are planning to drive outside with rubber tires, I would highly suggest you save some $$$ and get the Redcat Thunder Drift or Lightning Drift.
Both are MUCH cheaper, and a blast to drive with rubber tires.
@@RoadsideRC I've had my fair share of experience with Redcat racing and similar off brands of the same like hsp and himoto, they all use the same parts with soft easily strippable gears and pot metal differentials and clutch bells that also strip and break, cheap glitchy electronics, I've gone through loads of them buggys cars and trucks. I've learned that it's better to spend the little bit extra and get a reputable brand that uses decent quality materials. I also wanted to try out a rwd drift car with the extra steering lock because any time I've ever made my 4wd rc cars rwd it's very hard to hold a drift with them because they lack that little extra bit of steering to stop them from spinning. Ideally I'd like to get one that I could put a low speed pinion on and use for drifting with plastic wheels and also put a higher tooth pinion on and rubber tyres for a bit more speed and driving around the carpark, but also have that extra steering lock for drifting it with the rubber tyres in the car park. Hence why I'm trying to find one that has a good strong differential set up, preferably steel gears

I recently tried this car again with rubber tires - a newer video on it. Had both this one and the Redcat Thunder Drift.
I'm a little worried that you might be disappointed with the RWD car with rubber tires. But maybe not!!
The more I tune the alignment and suspension of this to be good with the drift tires, the worse it has made it with rubber tires. Interesting, huh?
@@RoadsideRC I just watched your other video there, I know everywheres on lockdown at the moment but it would be interesting to see that comparison on tarmac as opposed to the slippy workshop floor, that's if you wanted to that yourself.
What I usually drive around at the moment is a 1/8 thunder tiger eb4 buggy with a .28 nitro engine in it, I have it rwd with traxxas 20 million wt silicone oil in the diff, it keeps it very tight but allows enough cushion for the drive train as opposed to an all out spool. It's easier to control the slide when it's going faster than it is at low speed because the front wheels slip more, I tried giving it more steering lock but the design of the hubs and the steering don't allow for it.
It'd be nice to have a brushless car to take out for a quick blast without all the noise and mess of nitro and still get my fix, I enjoy the challenge of trying to drive something semi-uncontrollable it makes it all the more rewarding when you get it right, 4wd just seems too tame after a while when you get used to it. I think part of the trick with rwd is anticipating what the car is going to do and reacting to it slightly in advance.
Are the diff gears in your kit built mst plastic or metal? Have you ever had to replace any parts on them?
@@RoadsideRC I think why the suspension tuning works different for plastic and rubber tyres is down to how much it moves depending on the grip.
With plastic there's not much grip so the car doesn't lean over and change the camber in a turn so it stays the way you set it when it's sitting idle.
With grippier tyres the car is more likely to hunker down and lean over when in a turn, changing the the suspension angles.
I have my buggy set up with quite a lot of positive camber on the rear wheels so the tyres make more even contact with the ground when the suspension is leaning over in a turn or squatting under acceleration. It also helps get more life out of the tyres because it doesn't wear the inside part of the tyre as quickly. When's it's sliding the inside wheel is spinning faster than the outside one and it also picks up a sort of negative camber because the car is leaning over, I try to replicate this when I'm setting up the suspension by pushing the car sideways and pressing it down to see how much of the tyres are making contact

I thought it would literally not be able to drift...but was surprised it still did!
The more scale-accurate you make one aspect, the more scale-accurate you must make other aspects. Giving it this much grip, it really needs more weight to make use of it. You can find weight via the square-cube law. So at 1/10 scale this would need to weigh between 24-42 pounds, or more typically 29-37 pounds, to equal a full-sized drift car with "rubber tires" level of grip.
At that point, you might need more power and torque, too, between 3 and 9hp will be scale accurate. And your wheelspeed will need to be scaled as well, but scale speed is not as simple of a conversion, and I recommend looking up a true scale speed calculator, but roughly 35mph is about 110mph equivalent for 1/10th scale.
You will definitely burn through tires like a real drift car trying this. And you'll need some pretty ridiculous spring and shock oil setups. Also, your weight distribution will have to be more scale-accurate, too. Anything between 60/40 and 40/60 F/R should work, as it does IRL. Adjust as desired till it feels right.

But also, I still think it would be fun to try to make one of these with all metal super beefy components, an oversized electronics setup (like a castle 2200 1/8th scale powerset on 6s with a 1/8th scale HD servo), gear it for about 40-50mph wheel speed, and load it down with as many 1 pound lead ingots as you can reasonably fit under the body, then send it all the way on rubber tires but keep it on an ultra-smooth surface like this.
I bet the weight offsets the grip enough to give it the proper inertia and it'll feel much less twitchy/sensitive. Either that, or it accentuates the grip and becomes ridiculously fast, lol.

@@RoadsideRC yes sir, it is a highly modified with mostly diy mods on my now rwd TT02D. Like I'm running a metal HPI high speed spur gear that's been grinded down to fit the TT02.

Gotcha. For a smooth surface like this, it still does work. For an outside, or rougher surface, it will not.

Just be careful - often the drivelines are not really meant for that much load. You may damage something.
In general grip drifting is not fun. This is why back in the days people use to make fun of Americans because they would use the loud pedal and do a massive power slide instead of an actual control drift using different techniques.
Agree - would certainly rather use the standard drift tires...but it was fun to figure out what would happen!
