Yes and no. "Auto tune" was a piece of software created in the late 1990s...pitch correction was invented 50 YEARS before that in the 1940s and it was in wide use in the 1950s with "Variable tape speed" techniques being used to change pitches via speed changes (crude and rarely used). The mid 1970s saw the onset of the Harmonizer H910 which brought direct digital pitch correcting via overdubbing different recordings of the vocalist over each other to create a better pitch and was in wide use. The early 80s brought the "Infernal Machine 90" which added sampling and THAT was the first modern version of Auto-Tune as it allowed direct pitch shifting and harmonizing without needing extra tracks being recorded by the vocalist. This was the decade that bands appeared and sounded nothing like their recorded sound when playing live.

Us older folks fell in love with Barbra when she starred as the legendary 1920-1940s comedian Fanny Brice in the film "Funny Girl". Her biggest hit in that film was "People" although everything she sings in it is gold.

The play West Side Story was first performed on Broadway in 1957 and was about the prejudice against Puerto Ricans in New York City, but the deeper theme was about all types of prejudice, bigotry, hatred and violence against anyone, anyplace and how poverty and inequality cause social problems. The masterpiece film of it came out in 1961, choreographed by the great Jerome Robbins, much of it shot in New York neighborhoods that have since been torn down, and a remake came out in 2021. The score was by two legends: music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Many musicians have done their own versions of many of the songs from West Side Story over the decades since it was written, especially this one song - from opera stars to jazz and this is one of the most powerful and moving versions available on UA-cam.
Thanks so much for the excellent insight into WSS. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet sent in 1950s NYC. "Somewhere" is a gorgeous song and Barbra certainly did it justice.
I was a 21 yr. young woman of "white" European/Native American descent who grew up attending Baptist churches in Oklahoma during the 60's/70's. "He" was a 25yr.old Canadian Jewish guy who grew up in Montreal whose grandparents had immigrated to Canada fleeing religious/ethnic persecution in Poland and Russia (Ukraine in 1920). When we fell in love and married in 1976 we agreed to respect each other's religious beliefs and to teach our children all we could about both our faiths, and our cultural heritages. We chose this song (from "West Side Story") to be sung at our wedding. It just seemed like the perfect song for our situation. It is still one of my favorite songs.

Like Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand has a lot of vocal range and styles. Most notably her show tunes in the 60s, disco in the 70s and many movie themes and great duets. You really need to check out Barbra Streisand's duet with Donna Summer, "No More Tears" or her duet with Louis Armstrong, "Hello Dolly".

Yes, America is a melting pot but we still haven't learned to accept all for their differences. This song is a kind of hoping that someday we will one day open our minds & learn to live together.

I know this song, of course, from West Side Story, but if you didn't know that, doesn't this song bring your thoughts to current times? So much deviciveness, racial inequality, some filled with hate. There are some who want everyone to be like them. Push out the rest - the rabbi, the beautiful black child, and the lovely Asian family. Yes, they fit the American Dream, but not for some. They want this place we call America to only be available for those who fit a certain profile. Yes, there is a place for us. It's right here for all of us. We just need to protect our right to pursue that American dream! 💙💙💙
Thank you for saying this. I'm a 75 year old veteran and often ashamed to admit it but still do and by wearing a gay pride peace symbol and COEXIST pin with my service ribbons I show the world that some of us still remember what we fought for.
The world's greatest singer to date! Barbra is a perfectionist, and has ticked off quite a few people during her career, but the performances stand as some of the best in the industry. she has given me so much joy listening to her voice, and watching her on the screen where she also excels!👍😎🗽✌
To expand on Barbra she is a phenomenal actress she is. Maybe not for the show I suggest you watch A Star Is Born It has Barbra and Kris Kristofferson. You have done Kris is a few videos with Willie Nelson. He has written amazing songs. As always I truly enjoy your reactions 😊
You should watch the live “Yentl medley live 1994” The final part of her medley she sings a duet with herself. Which is incredible. She has that ability to keep a note forever seemingly.
I was so lucky to see Barbra 3 times in concert. She didn't sing this song in the first concert, but she sang it in the final 2. I was there at Staples theater in Los Angeles on her CLOSING NIGHT when her tour was being filmed for her HBO concert special which won her several Emmys. The song Somewhere was the closing song. We thought the concert was over, but she came out after many ovations and said, "I know you all are probably really tired, and want to go home (crowd yells "NO"!), but we have to reshoot 5 songs and (crowd flips out) if you wouldn't mind staying around...". So I got to see her sing Somewhere LIVE 3 times, twice in ONE NIGHT!! It was magical magical magical!!!
I am glad you are featuring singers who are just plain talented.Am a big Barbra fan for decades now . Listen to her older songs from the 70s. The way she sings the songs is like story telling
Bro- Look at BS performance of "One last bell to answer/A house is not a Home-Barbara Streisand" medley. It will knock your socks off. Barbara in her prime blending two huge contemporary hits. That video convinced me that BS is the overall greatest female singer in AMerican History.
I really thought your response to Ms. Striesand was spot on. The look on your face was priceless. This was music when I was in my teens. I'm not sure there is anyone like her today. She did her own film projects, had a lot of clout and as a result critics and others loved to take swipes at her. You need to hear her duets with Donna Summer. They did an album together which was a lovely blend of their voices and musical styles.
The wild thing for me with this reaction is I have legit never liked this song. It’s from the musical West Side Story and I always kinda was bleh about it, compared to the rest of that musical. But when I got what Babs did with the message of this song for her cover of this…..It hit me at the exact same time as you and I got chills. What a Legend she is. ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm a 75 year old veteran and often ashamed to admit it but still do and by wearing a gay pride peace symbol and COEXIST pin with my service ribbons I show the world that some of us still remember what we fought for.
she makes it look so easy
No one get closer to her when it comes to singing ability n power of her voice, mystical..
Her and Celine, are the best ever❤❤❤❤❤
Babs.. Great selection of songs from her. Sweet music to my ears.. Thanks mate.
Try her collab with Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, "Guilty"
There is almost a reverance to her when she sings. A true Artist.
It’s from West Side Story. You need to watch the movie or see the broadway play.😊
@Black Pegasus... check out The Way We Were from the movie of the same name. She starred with Robert Redford.
The world's greatest singer to date! Barbra is a perfectionist, and has ticked off quite a few people during her career, but the performances stand as some of the best in the industry. she has given me so much joy listening to her voice, and watching her on the screen where she also excels!👍😎🗽✌
I knew you would love it.
One of the greatest voices of all time ❤️❤️❤️❤️👵🏼 Gmaw
You have to see her perform You'll Never Walk Alone at the 2001 Emma's. It was just after 9/11
I love Barbara, always have and always will. What a phenomenal voice & I love Celine Dion as well. The two together are awesome. Love your reactions.
Goat. In her prime no singer can match her talent. Before or after. This is Celine Dion’s idol. Aretha Franklin said Barbra was her only competition.
Barbra Streisand's magical voice was just so so amazing. She also did acting. She has many many songs, all beautiful. She sang with Barry Gibb too!!!
****This came from the Broadway Musical & Film "WESTSIDE STORY". A Romeo & Juliet style story, with Rivals Puerto Rican & white Gangs.
Check out Barbara singing Evergreen with Chris Kristofferson from A Star is born.
Evergreen, Holy Ground, Tell Him ( with Celine Deon)
When I was 16 , I wanted to look like her! I adored her!
She can bring me to tears!
Actually that "somewhere" is within the open hearts wherever they exist in the world.
You should watch the live “Yentl medley live 1994”
The final part of her medley she sings a duet with herself.
I was beyond honored to see her three times in concert.
The greatest singer ever!
She has a duet with Celine. Beautiful. Barbara Streisand is so gifted. I love her voice.
I am glad you are featuring singers who are just plain talented.Am a big Barbra fan for decades now . Listen to her older songs from the 70s. The way she sings the songs is like story telling
She also has tinnitus (ringing in the ear), so she sings in spite of that!
From West Side Story. Song of lovers looking for a place to live and love in peace.
"People" (1964) was Streisand's first big hit with the general public. In 1998 her version of the song was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Bro- Look at BS performance of "One last bell to answer/A house is not a Home-Barbara Streisand" medley. It will knock your socks off. Barbara in her prime blending two huge contemporary hits. That video convinced me that BS is the overall greatest female singer in AMerican History.
The greatest female singer of all time!!!!!!!!!
Goose bumps everytime. I just love her voice.
My favourite female singer, she isn’t a megastar for nothing ❤🎶
What can you say, it is Barbra Streisand! She is so awesome! Love your reaction!
She is also a great actress serious and comedic.
She's amazing. Always has been
I really thought your response to Ms.
Just watch the movie Hello, Dolly! Great acting, superb singing
