Let's go back to those days when Lefty and the other greats sang and played music that we grew up loving. Those days were so much better than what we have allowed into our world today.
Lefty was one of the Greatest and most influential Country Singers Ever! Randy Travis, Johnny Rodriguez, Keith Whitley, John Anderson, Merle, you can hear his influence. in all their styles
bigal25938 absolutely, and Merle was known for his impressions and impersonations. He even said he learned to sing from listening to Lefty, so you can definitely see Lefty stuff in the way he sings
In his first autobiography Merle said he learned everything he knew about singing from Lefty Frizzell. As a young man he even got to sing for Lefty. After Lefty died, Merle bought his old guitar (from a fan, I think) and gave it to Lefty's family.
he was the originator of that style hag and a host of other copied him he never got the stardom he should have had due to bad management it is said if the difference between him and Elvis was Tom Parker
You're quite right of course Mr Smith - and whilst Lefty would go on to develop possibly one of the most original vocal styles in country music's long and turbulent history - he never made a secret of his debt to Jimmy Rodgers. We all get our ideas from somewhere...I don't really understand why people make such a big deal about it.
@@bigd1345 Nope. It was Lefty. Lefty got Merle a gig at the Rainbow Room when he was a teenager and even let Merle use his guitar. He never forgot that. That's why Merle bought that guitar from Frizzell's estate for $350,000.

With Whitey Shafer. Whitey said in an interview that the two would load the car up with beer and drive to Lefty’s cabin and spend a week writing songs.
Lefty was merele haggards hero according to his son Marty haggard lefty tried to get merele to record this song when he wrote it but he wouldn't do it and told lefty he should record it and after he died he recorded it to help lefty's wife if I remember correctly if you ever get the chance Marty haggard does some shows and sings and tells story's about growing up with his dad it's a neat little concert!
The song was written by Lefty Frizzell and Sanger D Shafer back in the early 70's for another country singer Johnny Rodriguez. Merle Haggard recorded the song in 1983 which garnish him a Grammy Award.
Thank you lefty. We heard and loved, just like willie. Let's get back to roots. Life seems too short. To relive lefty , just listen to old willie. We better he is not getting younger. We all will be glad we did, get to listening, with your eyes closed, just listen.........

My sister and her husband will be married 23 years in June. I am sending this song to them by way of their facebook page. It s perfact for a couple who still love each other AND married because they want to be
Listening to Alan Jackson’s cover to this song led me to Merle’s cover and now listening to the original. AJ is my favorite country artist tied with George Straight, regardless this is a fantastic song. Simple and pure. 😊👍
That's the working man's blues! This sings right to the sole when you feel that your relationship is not going well. Not like today's shit which they sing about getting some fine piece of ass in their pickup truck.
You're right, but I was referring to the genres as a whole, not just this song. Lefty left a great impact on country music and his music will live forever. I can't say the same about the BS coming out of Nashville today.
My parents listened to country music when I was a kid. I liked it until just before my teen years where I went to Rock & Heavy Metal. Like many kids at that age, I rejected country as it was my parents music. Some country came back in my life in the 90s. I got back into Johnny Cash and Hank Sr. around 2000. Then about five years ago I started listening to Merle, Willie, & Waylen much more frequently. Now I still like Pearl Jam & Smashing Pumpkins. I find it interesting that country was singing about sex, drugs, & alcohol way before Rock & Roll did.
I think Country Music is due for the next major revolution. Just like what happened to Rock & Hip Hop in the early 90's. Rock was in the same boat in the late 80's & early 90's like Country is today. Remember all the Glam/Hair/Pussy Rock bands making money off of crappy ballads? Then came the pure punk sound out of Seattle. Hopefully the next major wave is coming that will shake Nashville to its core. I'm sure there are Outlaw musicians out there just waiting for their music to take over.
Jeffrey Teeselink Country music has been a great friend to me all my life, I'm in my 50's now and it's carried me through a lot of bad stuff. The thing about the old traditional country sound, when they sang about sex, addictions and the bad things in life that make it so hard at times it was more often a warning whereas when Rock & Roll addressed those subjects it generally glorified them, Country music tells the truth about it. I agree too that what's coming out of Nashville today is a joke.
+witheforddon He did a cover on this one? Would love to hear that one. I understand he has a lot of "unofficial" recordings that haven't made it to youtube yet. I'm crazy about Whitley.
+witheforddon Wow, wish I was around in the 80's. Born in the early 90's... I'm actually from Sweden (yes, this country has gone insane) and I would love to visit sandy hook, see his statue, see the place he grew up in and see what Kentucky is like. But first I gotta make enough money ;) His sort of song you say, wow. He surely put his magic on "I never go around mirrors" for example. I remember I saved a fan page a long time ago where the Admin lay out a list of a lot of songs that you could request and he could send it to you but the page sadly looked kind of dead, so I never contacted him. I think I will have a try and contact him and maybe he has this song. It is always great joy to see comments like yours on youtube that shows how dedicated Whitley's fans are.
That's one of the demos Keith Whitley did when they were probably developing a new album that eventually got shelved for whatever reason. I assume because Don't Close Your Eyes was in the pending at that time.
Lefty sang this song first. I used to live in Nashville and become friends with his nephew Corey. They both had that same kind of red hair. Corey looked more like lefty than he did his daddy. The direction of this song is correct. Lefty made it a hit! What is so cool about Lefty is he was Merle haggard’s hero. That’s why he covered this song. I’m not gonna try to start an argument about this but Keith Whitley one of the most greatest voices that’s ever been idolized Lefty even though he started in bluegrass. He thought Lefty walked on water. We’ll they are all in Heaven now and I’m sure they have enjoyed each other’s company. I can’t wait to get there too so so I can hear that harmony! Wow! The very first LP I bought as a 15 year old was "Lefty Frizzell sings the songs of Jimmie Rodgers"! Lefty will always be my all-time favorite country singer! That tribute album to Lefty by Willie Nelson was atrocious! Especially the way he messed up my Favorite Lefty song "Look what thoughts will do". He omitted the last verse which was the "punch line" and ended by repeating the first verse. I bought the album only because it was supposed to be a tribute to Lefty, but what a big let down! Incidentally, In the 1960's Willie was one of my favorite singers. We have all of his RCA Victor albums, but after he took on the "last of the old hippies look" and changed his vocal style my wife and I dropped him from our list of favorite country singers! The only Columbia album we bought by him was the Lefty tribute and, as I said, what a big disappointment!
Aint no telling what Merle and Rodriguez or Whitley would have sounded like if it WASN'T FOR LEFTY...HE is where THEY got it and do their best with it...ALL of these guys along with ALL of Country Music would sound completely different if not for Roy Acuff and Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell and George Jones..
Lefty Frizell was the original Texas Honky Tonk Hero and everyone else came after him!
Let's go back to those days when Lefty and the other greats sang and played music that we grew up loving. Those days were so much better than what we have allowed into our world today.

I believe George Jones too.
yes sir you sure can. and a few more than merle. have you heard yokum sing this song? heck yokum had to be greatly influenced by ole lefty as well.
Lefty, Hank and Jones..the holy trinity of real country music!
I would say Hank, Bob Wills, and Lefty.
Seems to me that Lefty was the original before Merle and George. Lefty had a great style that was copied by many that would follow him.

Merle Haggard owns that guitar now.Story I heard was he had Marty Stuart go get it for him and he paid $50,000.
So classic !!!
Lefty Frizzell(March 31st,1928-July 19th,1975)
@gtrjames1 The hall of fame in Nashville returned it to the Frizzell family in 2005...Retrofret wound up with it, and Merle Haggard owns it now.

GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR, TWEETS, LORD BLESS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR UPON YA!
Very nice version. This song was cowritten by Whitey (Sanger) Shafer and it really suited Whitey’s voice better.
I enjoy Lefty and his son David music
David is he brother.
@dartanian6 I thought Merle bought it...at least that's what it says in the new book that David Frizzell wrote.
