  • I thrifted this Art Deco dresser from my local Habitat for Humanity store and really wanted to rescue it from the terrible white paint that was glooped all over it (you know I have NOTHING against painted furniture, I just don’t like BAD paint jobs!) After stripping it back to bare wood, I stained it with a super sophisticated BLACK wood stain that Miss Addams would die for!

Hi Katie, I am a fellow Canadian living inFrance and also restore and relook furniture for charity. I get my furniture at Emmaus. At first i was buying it and returning it for donation. At one point they noticed what i was doing and offered that i borrow the furniture and bring it back when i am done. Everyone though this is quite strange that i would not sale my furniture, but i appreciate contributing to such a great organisation. It also allows me to express my creativity without pressure. I want to say that you and Angie (transcend furniture) are my preferred furniture artists. Your pieces are classy, beautiful, perfect! Thank you for your high quality videos.

I'm so grateful that you saved this piece! When you mentioned putting a black stain on it, at first I was thinking "no", but I hung in there with an open mind. In the end, I truly think it was the best choice especially since you were donating it back to Habitat. The drawer pulls were the perfect choice, too! The work you did on the piece not only restored it back to usefulness & beauty, but it should be highly marketable. Great job, as usual, Katie!

Gorgeous result and totally in keeping with the piece's origins. Thank you so much for supporting Habitat for Humanity. I just moved into my very own Habitat house in Asheville, North Carolina. It's a new program with Aging in Place homes and I am proud to have helped build it. Another part of my "sweat equity" was working in the ReStore, which was a lot of fun. Since I have a design background, it was fun to think of all the potential projects and hear about customers' plans for their purchases. Keep up the good work!

Wowzer!!! My initial thought regarding this piece was that nothing could make it look updated. Don’t get me wrong, I like Art Deco generally speaking but it’s so style specific I didn’t think it would fit very well in many homes today. But after you worked your magic, I think it would look great any where. So pretty! That black is just the thing to bring it into 21st century. Well done Katie. 👍👍👍

It wasn’t restored. It has been reimagined. Restoration would have meant taking it back to the art deco design and finish and leaving the more valuable original bakolight hardware on it. It looks good and will have a positive effect on the Good Will.

You have such a giving heart. To bless people with such beautiful pieces that they may not be able to afford or even find. God knows your heart and the good you do to help people. Keep giving, I k ow the work is hard but satisfying at the same time. I wish I could get my self together I have 4 pieces I have started and not finished. I do alot of work outside so the weather plays a big part in my delays as well as my craziness lol. I have a big building outside I can use but of course it is full just waiting to be cleaned out. I wish I had the strength I had 10 years ago. I did it all then.

But once everything was done with the ebony stain, it totally works! Weird. Anyway, well done! And thanks for showing the stain on the finished piece with the sun on it - it made it easier to see the detail of the woodgrain! It's so gorgeous, sophisticated and definitely fits the art deco piece! ❤️
