- This American Empire Dining Table dates back to somewhere in the mid 1800’s! How cool is that? I knew when I saw it in the back corner of the thrift store, covered in layers of peeling paint, that I had to try and bring it back to life.

Debbi here. I have my great grandmother’s oak claw foot table. It has witnessed 115+ years of my family’s joys and sorrows, teething marks, dings and scratches and we are still making memories as we eat our meals on it everyday. It is one of my most precious possessions. I LOVE your channel and your artistry, but I am really glad you chose not to repaint this lovely old lady.

@@salvagedbykscott I think this is the same as my grandmother’s table that I have in the back bedroom to work on soon. I’m out of town now so I can’t do a feature by feature comparison but as I remember it, it’s the same. Unfortunately mine is missing the leaf and the hardware is messed up, I’m hoping it’s just out of alignment but it was a two person job and the last time I messed with it my hubby was out of town. I’m hoping to work on it soon!
Omg girl, for me, this is the best project by far. This table is stunning! I ❤️ American Empire, Duncan Phyfe and Hepplewhite era furniture. My grandmother had a huge (seated 12) table like this. I was 20 when she passed and have no idea where it is. I often think about that table and the holidays around it. This table brought all or that back for me, with a few tears. Thank you for restoring her. Someone is going to be very lucky!❤❤❤
I also have this table ( 10 ft length) and with its original 6 leaves in their dark stain (walnut). This is a family table going back to 1800s. I grew up with it in our kitchen. My daughter wanted me to get rid of it and no one else in my family wanted it, but I liked the design, so I have been inspired to do a mineral fusion wash to get rid of the orange color after stripping and sanding. I stripped and sanded one of the leaves, what I beautiful color.
This was unbelievable how you were able to see past the white latex to the beautiful wood underneath. What a stunning family heirloom this has turned into! Bravo!

Great job! I think you might be off on the date. The original American Empire style was most popular in the 1820s, and would have been well on its way out by 1848. Almost all American Empire would have been done in dark stained (very thick) flame mahogany veneer, or less commonly, rosewood veneer, over pine. This table is most likely from the revival of the style, 1900-1915 or so and is probably made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The hardware, as well as the use of quarter sawn oak, points to this later date. Oak was not often used on high style pieces in the earlier period.
Agree . Living in the Midwest ( USA ) this table & ones w/ varying base styles are very common . Usually 48" round oak , but do to being over 100 yrs. old , often missing the leaf / leaves so folks will make replacements . I've worked in interior design & also house / pet sit for friends & we joke that every country house in Illinois & Indiana has these tables . 🙂

What a treasure! I actually have a table like this. Same hand crank, same thick base. My grandparents gave it to me in 1986. They bought it at an estate sale in the late 1950s. I do have the two extenders. My top is in need of a refresh. 32 years of family life has done a little damage.

I did a double take because I have an extremely similar table in my dining room. I rescued mine from my father in laws lake cottage in Northern Maine. The wood was pristine, but nobody would eat at it because the finish was stickier than a toddler with a jar of honey. The finish was also a very dark walnut. Your find came out beautifully!

Absolutely gorgeous. I shudder when people paint over these pieces. I know sometimes pieces are damaged and you really have a choice. But with age of a piece like this scratches and dents are to be expected. Beautiful.

My table memory is a 8 ft long table that was in my late dad's dining room at his company. They were doing a make over of the executive dining room, giving away these beautiful maple tables with picnic style legs attached. My parents had the table since the early 1960s and for whatever reason still don't know and will never know My mom kept on telling me that when she's gone she wants me to have the table. Fast forward to 2016 when she passed and I took the table. Unfortunately I have a small house and this big table was way too big for my space. I found a woodworker nearby and asked him if he could create drop leafs. Well two months later I picked it up and I love it. My mother had her medically sealed it for all those years with two tablecloths and all those memories of my family having Thanksgiving on it still emanates fun times from it.

I think you could make some leaves to fit the table.... but keep them clearly new so that the story of this table contines to grow, especially now you've given it a new chance.

It amazes me how someone can see through all that old paint to see what treasure is underneath, I know nothing about restoration, but I love seeing how it's done and the end result. You made an arduous process look easy. It turned out beautiful.

Wow Katie that is beautiful - great job. You have so much patience! My grandparents had a dining room set just like that with the chairs, sideboard and china closet. They lived in a 1769 built house and it fit perfectly in the room. One day the whole set was gone from the room and when my father questioned his elderly parents they said they sold it to a "woman" who came in, saw it and offered them $200 for the whole thing. They did not know her name or anything about her but she said she was a neighbor. We never found out who she was but she stole that from them. Really sad. It was and as your table -just beautiful.

How pretty you made that table again ! And what memories of my grandmothers farmhouse kitchen that table brought back. In the early 1950’s, I would spend summers at my grandparents dairy farm in central WISCONSIN. Three times a day, grandma would set out massive meals. Depending on the time of day they consisted of thickly sliced homemade bread, with huge chunks of fresh butter,plates of sliced cheeses, boxes of cereals, and bowl after bowl of either scrambled eggs, fresh garden vegetables, delicious meat dishes, and plates of cookies/cakes that had been dessert after dinner the night before. In season a special treat was just picked raspberries and cream from grandmas cows.
Everyone was welcome! The table was directly below the floor vent of the bedroom where my sister and I slept. So, after dishes had been done and it was time for bed, we’d quietly sneak out of bed and eavesdrop on the grownup conversations happening at that table below us. They were magical days of simple pleasures. Thanks for saving that special table.

Beautiful job! This lovely table was made between 1890 and 1930 it is American Empire Revival. Original Empire furniture was usually made of Mahogany or Rosewood. Quarter sawn oak furniture came into fashion much later. American Empire Revival furniture is my favorite furniture style especially the sideboards with the beveled mirrors. This style would be perfectly at home in a Craftsman style bungalow.
