Very glad to see the Cummins can’t wait to see what you do with it
Thanks man! appreciate you watching 🤙
nice to see somebody bringing these trucks back to life, instead of parting them out or trashing them. New subscriber for sure 🤙
Yes bro facts!
Man u got the deal of a life time. Maybe if the Cummins was stock or had a bad Transmission. But it runs and drives and traded for a gas. Cant beat that
Yessir! Thanks for watching bro! 🤙
I second that. I have a 91 99 01 and 06. I thought I got good deals on my trucks. But dam I'd trade a gas 2nd Gen for a Cummins even if it had a bad Trans ,diff or something like that. You scored
I paid 3k for my 99 and the drivers side had been side swiped but clean title.
Good call on the lift pump. Get a fuel pressure gage or a edge monitor. The weak link on these is the vp 44 injection pump. Well I guess the auto trans, front ends and wiring don't have the best reputation Lol. Love my Cummins though.
@@whitesnake370 hell yea man thankyou
@@whitesnake370 yessir! 🫡
That shorty you had was baddass 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks my boy! 🤙
Please address your blue tooth front driveshaft, nice truck but it is pointless without 4 wheel drive haha
😂 yessir I agree thanks for watching buddy 🤙
It’s cool to see a fellow boricua be into trucks like this I’m part of the rare breed as well 😂 can’t wait to see what you do it got a subscriber outta me brotha keep it up my mans
Thanks my dude! I appreciate it 🤙
7:17 sounds like a bad injector or valve lash needs to be set. I seen this truck before in person lol
Nice man tell me more!
Outstanding Switch.. 🇺🇸💪🏿..
Thanks bro! I appreciate you watching 🤙
Oh yeah bud, good trade.
Thankyou sir! 🤙
on the driver side of the block is a casting number. Alot of people say 53 blocks crack alot weak casting points with adding power mods. So just be mind full if it is ! Good trade bud!
Thanks brother! We’ll try to be careful but if she cracks I’ll try to source a different block and possibly do a rebuild 🤷♂️ I appreciate you watching bro!
@@ReysGarage You might be lucky its not a 53 ! But Your gonna love it just like i love mine!
@@That_Nasty2g hell yea man it’s already been a lot of fun messing with it
Dont be to scared of the 53 block ya they are thinner walled then the others but if your not towing or putting a bunch of stressn on it u should be good. Also Cummins sent out a bulletin to fix/replace these so it may have been taken care of. Just let it get to temp before hot rodding it and let it cool down a little before shutting it down. I had a 99 and i regret letting it go. It was like yours but short bed, same interior, tho it was nice.
Hell yea man thanks for the support! I’ll definitely take that advice 💯🤙
Good video. Keep it up
Thanks brotha! I appreciate you watching 🤙
Nice vid my brother...keep up the good work...
Thanks dude! I appreciate you watching 🤙
Great video. Looking forward to more Dodge truck videos.
Thanks for watching bro! 🤙
Good trade.
Thanks buddy! We’re gonna have fun with it as we build it up
@@ReysGarage I am sure, those 2nd gen’s are good trucks and that motor will last forever if treated properly.👍
@@Gladiatorguy1998 hell yea!
def getting a sub from me, love seeing these trucks get saved
Nice buddy thankyou for watching 🤙
I’m new to the channel and love the content bro.
Hell yea dude thanks for watching. I appreciate it 🤙
Win!
Yessir! Thanks for watching bro 🤙
I wonder if that’s actually a suncoast transmission they’re like 7k and the billet converters are very expensive
Yessir I understand. It feels decent but I’m not the best at telling either 😂 it goes in gear right away and it doesn’t slip or smell burnt. It ran nice and low rpm on the interstate too. I do have a small drip coming out of the output shaft. Idk if it’s the seal or what. Nothing vibrates too much to think something is bent or anything. But I’m not sure.
Good looking truck can’t wait to see what you do with it! But please unsquat the truck 🙏
😂 Hey thanks man! I appreciate you watching 🤙
Surprisingly no body under all that debris😂😆…should have just went to the landfill and dumped all that crap one time…even though it’s 2wheel drive it’s still a Cummins!!👍🏽…Aloha🤙🏽
😂 that would have been crazy! Yea you’re right bro I definitely should’ve done that tho. Facts man, 2wd or not she’s still a Cummins 😂🫡🤙

get a steering box stabilizer they make your front ends last another 10k miles
Yessir you already know! Thanks for watching bro
i miss that old truck.
You could have bought it haha 🤙
If the transmission is powder coated the same color as on their website then I would believe it
Hey man, thanks for your input. It does not look like it’s powder coated. It just looks like fresh aluminum with a magtech pan. Plus I have a steady drip of oil right at the output shaft before the rear driveshaft. It shifts and feels good, but who knows how long it will last, especially after I start putting some power to it.
Neat rims.
Thankyou sir! 🤙
Please change the front bumper. Those 5th gen bumpers look fugly af. Winch bumper or get the sport grill and bumper. Looks so much better I found a sport front end for my 01. Dude was parting out his gaser I got the grill and bumper for $150 make sure you grab the hood safety release lever and hardware though. It different then standared.
I’m definitely looking for the front end but it’s hard to find down here.
Borgenson steering box would be your best bet
Dang lol I already ordered the redhead from extreme diesel products but the next diesel I get I’ll definitely consider getting that one for sure
Are you in central fl?
Yessir Clearwater area 🤙
Thought that was a 24 valve? That’s a 98.5 not 98
Yessir you’re correct about that. It’s also the dreaded 53 block 🤷♂️😂

Hey dude love the video, but i gotta say something. if youre going to chat for the first 10 minutes on a video, sit down somewhere, setup a tri-pod and record that way.
there is nothing worse then someone pacing around back and forth, twirling around while talking. just sit down and get the speech over with lol.
I definitely understand bro! I used the gimbal at the end of the video but you’re right. I’m gonna do that next time. I was super cringed out editing it 😂 thanks for the advice my man! 🤙
You’re cute or whateva 😊
😂❤️
What block number is it?! You better hope it’s not a 53 block! Google it and do some reading!
The 53 blocks are bad news!
They all crack at some point or another. Its not if it’s when! Heres a link to do some reading.
Drivers side engine block, just above where the oil pan meets the block, towards the front of the motor. It’ll be cast in 1” tall numbers. Theres different casting numbers 55,56. A ‘53’ is bad! The casting thickness was to thin and it WILL crack. And Theres nothing you can do. Some people try and tig weld it. Cast iron is hard to weld. You have to preheat it with a torch and tig it with a nickel rod. But most of the time it just cracks again at the weld. Theres block stitching, drilling the crack to keep it from walking, but all that, is just temporary and buys time to
Find another motor! Good luck! Chances are of its a 53 block the. The guy prolly knew about it. Its all over the internet. Being a 1998.5 theres a pretty
Good chance it is, it is a roll
Of the dice!
For comparison, My 2002 HO 24v 6 speed is a 56 block. 55 and 56 blocks are the best casting numbers. I forget where each particular number was cast where. 53 blocks were brizilian cast ‘tupy’ blocks. 53,54,55,56 blocks. It follows a sequential series, 53’s being earlier and flawed, 56 being a revised casting, machining etc, ie. Any issues and problems fixed in later years and versions. Its never good to buy the ‘first uear’ of something, ever, on anything, there is always bugs and links that need worked out. And yours being a 98.5 is the first half year of the 24v. The 12v’s they jad all figured out and were teets, but emissions controls got tightened snd and so it went to 24 valves, the blocks are basically the same from a 12v to a 24v btw theres no difference. Only thing diffrent from a 12v to a 24v except for the injection pumps, and the number of valves is the head design (duhh) and the pistons and rods, and injector, injector pop off pressure . Heck the 24v blocks still have the mounting hole to run a mechanical cam driven piston style fuel lift pump, i have a chrome block off plate on mine lol. (mr gasket part number: 1516 $10 at any auto parts store! Works on big block chevy motors to.)
Good luck!

It is the 53 man! I hate to say it but but it’s true. Hopefully it last long enough for me to flip it for something else 🤞 but thanks for reaching out bro! If it wasn’t the 53 block I’d prolly keep it. I also thought about pushing it until it blows then source a different block? Not quite sure yet. But I got FASS 165 and edge juice w/ adrenaline on the way from XDP. So well see how it goes 🤷♂️😂🤙
Dang!!! Bummer dude. Its not the end of the world…but like its going to inevitably crack. Its not a matter of if but when. Just plan on doing a motor swap. Find a builder block and start piecing together everything. You got time. How much? Who knows. Its all about warming up and expansion of the cast iron block. Plug in the block heater. Keep it plugged in all the time so the block stays a constant temp! Lol avoid cold starts and if you have to make sure its properly warmed up. Thermal shock, like when the coolant inside of the block has been warming up, and the thermostat opens and all of that colder coolant/water that was sitting in the RAD comes rushing in. Thats thermal shock. Proper warm ups, plugging it in and just babying it when its cold will extend it. I wouldn’t try any of the bandaid fixes, waste of time.
Id suspect the seller knew it was a 53 block. But hey you traded a gasser for a diesel! I liked the little mini bobtail bed on the reg cab gasser. Ihad a buddy that did something like that on his square body chevy and i always wanted to do something like that and ‘mini bob-tail’ it. Cut off any extra frame, Maybe even move the axle forward a little bit to cut off more frame. Its be kinda going backwards on my ‘02 tho. Mines a ext cab 4 door long bed. Itd be waaaay cooler if it was a regular cab, then shorten it to be a ‘shorty’ 3/4 1 ton 24v SRW mini bob tail flat bed! Lol.
My ‘06 mega cab is just about almost did the ‘long bed my megacab’ kit that converts it to a full 8 foot
Long bed. All said snd done tho its like $10k by the tome you cut the frame, stretch it, blah blah, find a new long bed and tailgate l, have it color matched etc. then you got school bus limousine to try and park in parking spots that are designed to fit a lawn mower. Forget even trying to go down town!
I think you got a good start for getting into a 2nd gen 24v. The weakest link is gunna be that ‘built’ auto trans.
Upgrade the steering box to a bigger PSC box.
Absolutely make sure you have a FASS fuel system. It is a must for any VP44.
Check and do the killer dowel pin if you don’t know the condition of it. Its a lot of work but it gives you a chance to reseal common oil leaks.
Defiantly clean up all the wire mess. Yuk. Sloppy wiring hurts my OCD. Pressure test your intercooler (CAC) i guaranteed you can find pin hole leaks under boost press. Ive never found one that didn’t. You can make an easy 4” rubber boot and pvc cap with a air fitting glued in it to pressurize the system for $10 at the hardware store. Run the over head end adjust the valves. Check for vacuum leaks on the cowl. Those little hard plastic vac lines like to crack and the little rubber 90 degree fittings dry out and leak vacuum. A tell tale sign is if your blower motor (heat or a/c ) isn’t switching from defrost to vents to floor. It’ll stay on defrost if theres a vacuum leak. Same with your 4wd actuator on your t case and the front axle disconnect. The vaccum harness gets cracked and leak then your 4wd wont shift and lock in. They make cable actuated kits or you can make it stay locked in all the time (theres utube vids on it)
Or find a ‘02 dana 60 axle from a 2002 like mine and it doesn’t have any of that vacuum actuated crap! 2001-2002 was the best years for secound gen. It had all the strongest of the strong best of the best parts, if your looking for parts at a junk yard or soemthing, find a ‘02, everything is just better. Linda like with the block numbers like i was saying, thwy are a sequential sequence of casting numbers, and in each different one they changed something and made something a little better, a little thicker here and there etc. thats why if your going to build a motor find a 55 or a 56 block but in reality you could use any block 12v or 24v, anything but a 53! Lol
@@Moose400ex haha this is hilarious 😂 took me a minute to read it but I love it bro! You and I would definitely get along over a few brews 🤙
@@Moose400ex damn this is gold for knowledge bro. Definitely screen shotting this comment 🫡
What an ugly pos that red Dodge was
😂
U definitely got a good trade, ur truck was nicer but gassers aren't worth much
Yessir I agree! I had to jump on the first opportunity to get out of the gassers.
