My Thai wife didn't drive here in America for 7 years, she told me she finally wanted to learn how to drive I said great. I taught her how to drive I bought her a car and then two weeks later she left me for someone else. Hahaha...That was the best thing that ever happened to me.😆😆😆

Hey Jonny, good for you and Som! My dad never pushed my mum toward independence and once he was gone she was not able to do the things we find so normal and part of our daily life; driving, paying bills, yard work etc. So later on this is good for the both of you! Congrats!

My Thai wife was ok with not driving for awhile, but she is much happier now that she can drive and has the ability to get out on her own from time to time.

Riding a motorbike in Hua Hin is fun until the weekend and then you stay on the back roads. Som will have more freedom in her life and more responsibility also.
Fast forward 4 years and she is now looking at cars. How time flies!
It doesn't take much to get one's small family on the right track again, if you don't come up with a good idea for something yourself, it costs a lot of money

it is a show of love making her have some independence. as an American living in the Philippines i do not want my woman depending on me to much as i could get hurt or other bad crap. her being able to get from point a to point b is needed. it also makes it so she can have a bit more freedom to do things on her own if she wants. even as a couple you need your own space from time to time.
Jonny, I'm happy for her (and you) on one hand and pretty damn scared on the other. Having had my fair share of motorcycles here in the USA, I can't avoid the mental discomfort of knowing that this beautiful creature will eventually take a spill. Yes...it's going to happen, folks...even to the most experienced riders. Watching her ride without pants and shoes (just shorts and sandals) makes that eventual reality that much more cringeworthy to contemplate. TBO (although much more expensive), I would've pushed for her to learn how to drive a car instead. Just my .02...Stay safe!

Next step a proper Thai driver’s license which is not easy for some, but my wife got her’s in December at Mukdahan. Car license was harder good luck

Definitely needed to learn who to ride a bike she did,so many advantages. Also the best time to learn while there is less traffic due to the virus,she might not realize that now but you have definitely gave her independence. If you need to go back to Australia or you get sick,she will still be able to get around and take care of day to day things. Some people just need a big push to achieve the desired result,just get her riding everyday and build up her confidence. She will thank you for it later on,plus it will make her son feel happy to have his mom pick him up from school. It’s a win win.

ha ha interesting story--my wife and I moved to the Philippines to retire and built our house, bought a car...but here's the thing--she's too scared to drive it on any of the roads here at all! I have to do all the driving! Oddly--this 90% of the time doesn't even bother me in the sucking flightest...but don't worry--she still does enough things to make me crazy regardless...but not that refusal to drive. I kinda don't blame her--driving around the Philippines is...challenging.
Pushing someone towards independence is good but threatening to split up after 4 years just over transportation problems is churlish and just plain nasty to poor som.
Overall your attitude shows that you are not committed to the relationship and a lack of respect for your “ Thai “ girlfriend. Would you have dared to treat an Aussie gf the same way?

When Som gets more proficient , you could maybe upgrade her bike to a PCX,or give her your Vespa and you get yourself/treat yourself to a new bike of your choice!

This isolation is hard for us all but the stats in Thailand are fairly good compared to many other countries, Thailand 43 deceased, Hua Hin 2. Stay safe. I was staying at the dog house in Hua Hin. A young lady was sitting on the front on me on the motorbike on the way home after a big night out. I asked her if she knew she was going and she said yes so i handed over control. she ran us straight into the closest car. lesson learned.
waking kids up in the morning is great, if you can't do that then you are missing out on something very special, soon the kid will be independent, and you'll realise it too late , shame on you, get out of bed for the kid.
how is it one year later? any accidents on the bike? I hope she has been ok on it and no problems. Good for her to do this. She is definately a keeper.

As a long time SE ASia expat, I must ask...how long have you been in Thailand? Don't you know when a thai girl is scamming you for a new motorbike?? That is why she kept getting you to ride her eveywhere before. You ahould have left her and found a better GF that actually is interested in you.

WOW.... And I thought I had the only Thai woman that could not ride a scooter... In fact her story is very much like your ladys.. No conference and family to run her everywhere... So any way I told her you get a licence and I will get you a scooter for your 40th birthday.. She spent a few weeks practising on the family's scooters... Done a 3 day licence course and came out the other end with a licence.. I was so happy for her.. getting it first time was a big kick in the pants for her conference and is the only one in her family with a licence … Unfortunately I was unable to be there for her birthday and buy the scooter "dam virus"... So I sent her the money and she bought a Yamaha freego 125... she has only put 130km on it in the month she has had it... just let her learn at her own pace.. she is riding that's the main thing...

I can't agree with your thinking here Johny, you have plenty of money, well enough to spend 300k Baht on a little Toyota Vios. Pay the 6,000 baht to have a company teach her and get her drivers license, then the two of them are about 1000 times safer and when it rains etc they don't have to struggle.
I could not stand when my gf used to ride around the city with a bike, best thing I ever did was buy her a car, also she became far more independent. You are putting her and the kid out on roads that are the second most dangerous on earth.

Everyone is different, I would not want my Thai girlfriend riding a motorbike in most of Thailand. The roads are to dangerous.
Som won’t be riding a motorcycle in 12months she will have a brand new car, until then she needs to understand traffic & understandings of road rules

Here in Indonesia it comes with no plates and takes about a month for them to send them but never a hassle. Funny story I have a Yamaha nmax and always took my wallet out from under the seat. Shopping one day I locked my keys under the seat and had to get them to open the seat. The scooter was virtually disassembled including taking the speedo out. Never take my wallet out anymore. Ha ha ha
Enjoyed the video but it's a tough call to make a novice drive a motorbike in Thailand. My ex thai girlfriend never wanted me to drive one even I ride in the states. I have one now but it's not my driving, it's the nuts on the road that don't how to drive. I swear I get a pickup truck that pulls out in front of me everyday. I was told once that you need 20 eyes to drive anything in Thailand , so true. Not to mention the bad roads. Hope it all works out and stay safe

Jonny There Is Something Happening , it was a MK1 too but I had it modified. I converted the back drum brim brakes to disc brakes, upgraded the front ones. Changed my suspension. Dropped in a Toyota 4AGE 20valve black top engine with ITBs. Wide fender arches just like those from the rally models in the 70’s and added 2 fog lamps in front. 😊 I really missed her. I’m even planning to get a tattoo of the car on my arm soon. 😃🙏🏻
I don't mean to sound negative mate but motorbikes are dangerous. I can certainly understand her point of view but also understand your time and money issue. I personnelly would buy her a car and teach her how to drive it safely! It's your call mate
She will get a next year until then I think it’s best to learn the toad rules on a bike. Bikes aren’t that dangerous if you ride sensible. Most 90% bike accident are caused but drinking & speeding Som doesn’t speed nor does she drink😊👍
John Roberts Aussies have a fear of bikes because most Aussies who ride scooters in south east Asia are not following the local traffic guidelines.
basic motorcycle schools in the States teach you to assume you are not seen and be prepared to move out of someone’s way and that is why motorcycles are so dangerous! My thai gf also crashed a couple of years ago!

Unfortunately with the corona virus the land & transport office where you go get the license doesn’t reopen until the 1st of may. She will be going there to get her license straight away 😊👍

Completely understandable that she is from Bangkok and doesn't know how to drive a car or a motorbike..A lot of poor girls who live in bangers are like that..But once she gets confidence riding that motorbike, look out..Will only take her 6 months to get confidence...Then Jonny will be saying, where the F is Som?..She's been gone for hours..She was shopping for shoes at the hua hin mall..
