Instead of Light as a Feather...drummer 2 seemed to be playing the "Heavy as an Anvil" version...good drummer but it was too heavy handed for my ears...could have used a little more finesse...
Bert was impressive indeed! Man that kid had that song nailed and I really liked the arrangement that he did. Keep more of these coming Nathan, there are some of us who really enjoy them. :-) Kanado Sato was most impressive as well. I love to see female drummers beasting on the kit. It is a joy to me. :-)
You are an EXCEPTIONALLY talented youtube creator. No one else that I’ve seen puts so much thought into the flow of the video, content, AND balances with genuine high level humor. You are wicked cool, dude - ‘nother level that others don’t understand and haven’t reached, in my opinion. You’re also humble which is endearing and keeps your viewers coming back again and again. If I don’t happen to care about a given topic, I’ll still watch for the entertainment value alone. Yep, you’re that good. Thanks so much for the videos!
All of these "Who Played It Best" are So Appreciated but this is one of My Favorite songs and I have been studying Jazz and Latin Music for years. Samba is a stretch for Me. Hats Off to Each one in their own styles.
Wow Nate! I think you were definitely brave, as usual, to put your own very good version up against all these wonderful takes on this classic tune. You're fearless! Awesome video. 🥁❤
Cover#4 kanade sato to add. There is an old channel that Kanade's father used to uploaded as a home video, so check it out. I recommend Spain, which she played when she was 6 years old. ua-cam.com/video/ICDuYKaMGQ8/v-deo.html PlayList - spain ua-cam.com/play/PLEh-8n6WAHqlE8O327AoAAYGfSrwVamSw.html
Yes, That is a fog machine Kanado is using (probably dry ice, actually). I think you need to cover use of dry ice, sometime. Love the channel - And I'm not even a drummer (guitarist)!
I see a Samba deep dive in my near future. Thanks for teaching and motivating and inspiring and making me spit coffee at Thursday breakfast with the “Chick Corea Jazz Face”. 😂🤣🥣
I COMPLETELY agree with your winner. I had the biggest smile on my face listening to his version. Your version was dope as well. I love that you stripped it down. Not a fan of how the first 2 drummers went cymbal happy during that classic break, muddying the effect of it...but their samba parts were really good i thought
Who played it best? Airto. Criminally under recognized as a drum kit player. Your version as well as your top vote paid sufficient homage. What are your thoughts on Airto's solo records?
Loved the "winner" version. Played the melody. Interacted, sounded musical, that compensated the audio quality. Nate, i love your channel and your work. Hated your version. But still love you.
Not samba reggae, though I love samba reggae, and played it for years as part of The Whitest Samba Troupe On Earth - shout outs Dane Richeson - but the hipster samba is more like batucada.
They all did great and are very talented. Bert was my favorite and it seemed like he was in the music. Great stuff. This video has also made me realize yet again that I need to practice way more and that I stink...as well as not being a very good drummer.
Thanks for posting this and for giving us a bird’s eye view of some absolutely perfect bass drum technique (Ms Kato) , however it wasn’t “heel up” as you said, it’s hell up and down alternating . Bert’s version was unbelievable as well but IMO nothing will ever beat Airto’s original version.. Just the sound of his ride ... I liked your take on it as well.
Totally agree with your ratings this time, Nate. Bert killed it. I'll limit be significantly more terse with my constructive criticism this time. While it didn't feel as tight as the other performances (though stylistically, I do prefer yours to Sato's) it certainly wasn't bad, and you're definitely more in your element here than in past attempts. In terms of your choices, my main criticism is the overabundance of straight 8th notes on the left foot. It muddies the ride pattern, and I'm missing that interplay between the left foot and the snare that's such a huge part of the samba. You do the left foot justice earlier in the video when you're demonstrating the samba, however. In terms of execution, I still want to hear a larger range of dynamics, and I want to see (and also hear) less stiffness.
The all did good, but that Bert M'fucka Villegas is something else. So worth checking the whole cover obsessively. He does sound like he who could have been in the drum seat for a real Chick Corea gig. It shows the guy worked HARD on that arrangement. A
❤2:13, they wouldn't play it note for note the original. Yes. One thing I try to get across when teaching comping is comping works best when everyone is in sync. Not when everyone plays the same thing.
I’ve always been into nothing but metal. Later on I discovered Rush and Zappa. Now finding something like this it’s like, damn. Skills aren’t always what you think they are.
ok real talk are you actually displaying a green image on your laptop and then chroma keying the video onto the laptop screen in post? and if so, how much did you obsess over trying to get the image to line up with the screen?
I agree with your pick. However, all drummers including you did do a really good job and would have sounded great in concert with a band that matched their respective "renditions".
This was very interesting, I agree about Bert, very musical and tasteful playing. I think if you were to hear me play Spain I would get a 1.5 on a good day!☹️ I could use the three course video, maybe it can teach an old dog new tricks? I can’t seem to find the link down below.
My soapbox is puny, but regardless of nuance and finesse and variation (nice catch with the "brazilian clavé" BTW, the bilingual version of Girl from Ipanema being a good case of point), the 1 - 2-a -ride pattern still seems alien to me in a Brazilian setting. Just like the hi-hat footings on... where they're played 99% of the time. That hasn't stopped me from playing with my left foot "as before", but IMHO the right hand is better off playing other patterns in the long run. BTW I heard a funny story about the origin of Airto's pattern, told by the man himself, but I'm not gonna get into that right now. In any case, top notch content again, as was to be expected!
I wish people like this stop making music to be like a competition music never was meant to be a competition it's called arts and that's what makes it unique everybody speaks differently walks differently expresses themselves differently and that's what makes the world so unique and music's no different it's sad when certain people think that music has to be competition thing it's never been that. Funny thing is this is a song that you just don't hear in the radio or it's a popular thing so what's the big deal man.
In total agreement. Bert Villegras played so tastful and yeah he did his homework. All of them, yourself included, can play rings around me on a tune like this but I have to say #2, Shaba Segun (who has monster chops) played the entire piece at one dynamic level, he's better than that. How would Don Brewer play "Spain" ?
Airto Moreira often plays percussion so seems rare to hear him drumming. I liked the first drummer as seems a little creepy to say you preferred the host regardless of how good it was, and it was.
I've seen Spain covered by 100's of drummers.....just my 2-cents, but most of the hits in the tutti section are staccato, yet so many drummers hit crash cymbals on them (and vice-versa on non-staccato hits)....drives me bananas sometimes...but whatever works i guess...
Jay's feel was the best people don't realise how much practise it takes to obtain this level of ease in your playing especially in samba
Instead of Light as a Feather...drummer 2 seemed to be playing the "Heavy as an Anvil" version...good drummer but it was too heavy handed for my ears...could have used a little more finesse...
Dynamics are everything
Heavy as an Anvil! Haaaaa
My thoughts exactly.....obviously can play....but subtlety wasn't high on the agenda with this one.
His fills also didn't seem to be in time if my ears are correct
Yeah, he sounds like a samba street parade.
Been studying samba on the drums in brazil for about 10 years now and totally agree with what you said about it
You should check out kiko freitas!
Kiko is the man. Also suggest Edu Ribero!!
What a wonderful tribute to Chick! Thank you Nate
Bert Villegas. Remember his name peeps he’s going places
Bert was awesome.
yep. nice player.
Awesome playing!

Im giving you a 9.5 grade for this video against all your others. Thank you! Great job.
Lots of talented drummers out there. Well done all!
Nate your version was awesome because you tried the original Airto version!
Wow Nate! I think you were definitely brave, as usual, to put your own very good version up against all these wonderful takes on this classic tune. You're fearless! Awesome video. 🥁❤
Another nice video, Nate! Keep killing it!!
Agree! Bert's subtle aproach is awesome!
Cover#4 kanade sato to add.

Love the channel - And I'm not even a drummer (guitarist)!
Fully agree about the number one ! Thanks for your videos!
love you so much!!
Totally agreed with your selection of Bert. He killed it and was so musical. Great playing!
I agree! and nice job by all!
Kanade Sato roolz Spain.
Timely question and tribute - Thanks.
I see a Samba deep dive in my near future. Thanks for teaching and motivating and inspiring and making me spit coffee at Thursday breakfast with the “Chick Corea Jazz Face”. 😂🤣🥣

Great. Thank you
A M A Z I N G video. Very very nice all around!!!!
Loved it. I never heard this song before, and your video was a great introduction.
The best covers (Bert and Kanade) had the drummers "dancing" in their seats while playing. That's not a rule... but it helps a lot!
Who played it best? Airto. Criminally under recognized as a drum kit player. Your version as well as your top vote paid sufficient homage.
What are your thoughts on Airto's solo records?
Yep, if any one listened to the original u can't do it, it's like a dream floating, tastiest guy ever!!!!!!
Wow, Bert is scary good. Great video.
Yeah as soon as I saw Bert I knew that was the guy I’d hire. His touch and creativity and attention to detail is INSANE
Loved the "winner" version. Played the melody. Interacted, sounded musical, that compensated the audio quality.
Nate, i love your channel and your work. Hated your version. But still love you.
this has been my favorite "who played it best" so far!!! I dare you to do one for the classic "De Musica Ligera"
They all play great, my favorite is the akoustik version with Dave weckl where they alternate melody rhythm slightly
Hey, Teach! Can we have classes outdoors today?
Nice !!
I'm surprised you didn't include the SNIPS cover. Those kids are incredibly talented. Interested to know what you think!
The drummer that played on the original track was Airto Moreira from Brasil.
You have a transcription of the samba reggae type groove (hipster) one for Spain. Dig it👌🏽
Not samba reggae, though I love samba reggae, and played it for years as part of The Whitest Samba Troupe On Earth - shout outs Dane Richeson - but the hipster samba is more like batucada.
They all did great and are very talented. Bert was my favorite and it seemed like he was in the music. Great stuff. This video has also made me realize yet again that I need to practice way more and that I stink...as well as not being a very good drummer.
My only gripe is you failed to show Kanade’s solo, which is outstanding.
I agree, Kanade was definitely short changed.
Thanks for posting this and for giving us a bird’s eye view of some absolutely perfect bass drum technique (Ms Kato) , however it wasn’t “heel up” as you said, it’s hell up and down alternating . @12:06 She's quoting Gadd. That's his mozamique.

I wish you also explained how to keep the "paso doble" feel the song has before the samba for the hipster version.
Awesome!!
Agree 👍
Nice work, Bert.
Be Free guy was a clear high point for me.
Sarah Thawer @ The Jazz Room
great video!
6:15 Just a reminder for myself.
I liked the first guy - smooth and tasty. Also the young girl at the end - I liked her pocket despite the 16th not thingy you said.
Kanade Sato hands down!
Hi 80/20!! Wondering if you recommend heel up on hihat to??
Usually, yes
❤2:13, they wouldn't play it note for note the original. Yes. One thing I try to get across when teaching comping is comping works best when everyone is in sync. Not when everyone plays the same thing.
Wow! I want that samba transcription!
Nice one
I'm still trying to figure out why "Spain" is a samba. Lol!
I agree
I’ve always been into nothing but metal. Later on I discovered Rush and Zappa. Now finding something like this it’s like, damn. Skills aren’t always what you think they are.
There's a good rendition, search for Axtell Spain for a live quartet version of the song.
ok real talk are you actually displaying a green image on your laptop and then chroma keying the video onto the laptop screen in post? and if so, how much did you obsess over trying to get the image to line up with the screen?
I have a great video editor
I agree with your pick. However, all drummers including you did do a really good job and would have sounded great in concert with a band that matched their respective "renditions".
I am just trying to learn that song. It’s so crazy complicated…

@@adrianavillegas37 Thank You!!!
God bless Chick Corea. Good vid.
I like the power and volume of No. 2.
I met chick in 2015 at shepoerton studios. London uk.
What a classic!
Samba is cool!!!Samba school!!!......thanks bro!!!
The winners was the best to me he was just on another level with it
Steve Gadd and Al Jaerrau - Spain (Live Under The Sky 90)

Loved your version, and it looks like you're trying to bore a hole in the ride with your eyes.
Bert for a live gig but Jay for recording.
Rest in peace Mr. Corea❤️ One of the greats was lost this year :(
4:55 tutorial
That Bert Kid!!!!
"i fucks with it" actually lold
Of course it's Gadd in Montreaux in 1990!
3:05
Agreed. Bert owns it.
Did you run out of gateway drugs?
Haaaacoughcough
We can hear for urselves, bro.
You forgot the Jesus Molina version of Spain. The song has metric modulation and the drummer (female) has some hot shit polyrhythmic ideas!!
Roni Kaspi is the drummer on that

This is a BITCHIN content template, Nathan! 👏👏👏👏🤘✌️
Shaba played too hard and without dynamics.

the hypster version s so samba !

#1, that's a sexy samba.
"heel up" !!!! word
I miss Brooklyn
That’s easy to say Weckly of course
