The emergence of synth-pop has been described as "perhaps the single most significant event in melodic music since Mersey-beat". By the 1980s synthesizers had become much cheaper and easier to use. After the definition of MIDI in 1982 and the development of digital audio, the creation of purely electronic sounds and their manipulation became much simpler. Synthesizers came to dominate the pop music of the early 1980s, particularly through their adoption by bands of the New Romantic movement.
The New Romantic scene had developed in the London nightclubs Billy's and the Blitz and was associated with bands such as Duran Duran, Visage, and Spandau Ballet. They adopted an elaborate visual style that combined elements of glam rock, science fiction and romanticism. Duran Duran have been credited with incorporating dance beats into synth-pop to produce a catchier and warmer sound, which provided them with a series of hit singles. They would soon be followed into the British charts by a large number of bands utilising synthesizers to create catchy three-minute pop songs. A new line-up for the Human League along with a new producer and a more commercial sound led to the album Dare (1981), which produced a series of hit singles. These included "Don't You Want Me", which reached number one in the UK at the end of 1981.
Synth-pop reached its commercial peak in the UK in the winter of 1981-2, with bands such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Japan, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and even Kraftwerk, enjoying top ten hits. In early 1982 synthesizers were so dominant that the Musicians' Union attempted to limit their use. By the end of 1982, these acts had been joined in the charts by synth-based singles from Thomas Dolby, Blancmange, and Tears for Fears. Dutch entertainer Taco, who has a background in musical theatre, released his own synth-driven re-imagining of Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On the Ritz"; resulting in a subsequent long-play, After Eight, a concept album that takes music of 1930s sensibilities as informed by the soundscape of 1980s technology. The proliferation of acts led to an anti-synth backlash, with groups including Spandau Ballet, Human League, Soft Cell and ABC incorporating more conventional influences and instruments into their sounds.
In the US, where synth-pop is considered a subgenre of new wave and was described as "technopop" or "electropop" by the press at the time, the genre became popular due to the cable music channel MTV, which reached the media capitals of New York City and Los Angeles in 1982. It made heavy use of style-conscious New Romantic synth-pop acts, with "I Ran (So Far Away)" (1982) by A Flock of Seagulls generally considered the first hit by a British act to enter the Billboard Top Ten as a result of exposure through video. The switch to a "new music" format in US radio stations was also significant in the success of British bands. The success of synth-pop and other British acts would be seen as a Second British Invasion. Synth-pop was taken up across the world, with international hits for acts including Men Without Hats and Trans-X from Canada, Telex from Belgium, Peter Schilling, Sandra, Modern Talking, Propaganda and Alphaville from Germany, Yello from Switzerland and Azul y Negro from Spain.
In the mid-1980s, key artists included solo performer Howard Jones, who S.T. Erlewine has stated to have "merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave with the cheery optimism of hippies and late-'60s pop", (although with notable exceptions including the lyrics of "What Is Love?" - "Does anybody love anybody anyway?") and Nik Kershaw, whose "well-craft synth-pop" incorporated guitars and other more traditional pop influences that particularly appealed to a teen audience. Pursuing a more dance-orientated sound were Bronski Beat whose album The Age of Consent (1984), dealing with issues of homophobia and alienation, reached the top 20 in the UK and top 40 in the US. and Thompson Twins, whose popularity peaked in 1984 with the album Into The Gap, which reached No.1 in the UK and the US top ten and spawned several top ten singles.Initially dismissed in the music press as a "teeny bop sensation" were Norwegian band a-ha, whose use of guitars and real drums produced an accessible form of synth-pop, which, along with an MTV friendly video, took their 1985 single "Take On Me" to number two in the UK and number one in the
The Pet Shop Boys performing in 2006.

The best !
agreed. I'd add erasure and the cure.
Can’t wait to see Pet Shop Boys and New Order in September!
@@rmccp will they Collab?
Ich will sofort zurück in diese Zeit😮
Vince Clarke founding member in Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure. What a synth wizard what a legend!
agreed so few know he was part of founding of depeche mode and felt he was "getting lost in the mix"
Also The Assembly, a short lived collabaration project that resulted in a UK no.4 hit.
He's GOAT (in music).
Vince Clarke He’s such a singular figure and even though he was only on the first Depeche Mode album he wrote nearly all the songs, and let’s face it if he hadn’t there wouldn’t have been a Depeche Mode first album or at least that one
REALLY?! I did not know that 😳
I loved all those bands
Thanks 😊
The 80s had the best music!
this is moreso new wave, and some variations of new wave, with like four synth pop bands thrown in.
Well it had a lot of good music and a lot of choice. I was born in the 60s and therefore I might argue 70s music was better but I'd be splitting hairs.
Without a doubt.
Human League my Favorite
Depeche mode 🖤
Erasure ❤️
Yazoo 💕
New order 💙
Pet shop boys 💛
Tears for fears 💚
Human league 🧡
Amazing top 💕

RIP Depeche Modes' Andy Fletcher.
Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Alphaville, Depeche Mode, A-ha, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and The Human League are my favorites here 🥰
So glad I was a teenager in the 80s...great music unlike today’s s*&t
Many good choices, especially Alphaville, but Kim Wilde, Duran Duran, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Sandra, A-ha and China Crisis should also be here. Sparks and ABBA touch on synth too.
Золотые времена... Минули безвозвратно. Только в памяти, к сожалению со временем стирающейся, - юность, друзья, музыка..
I love Alphaville (so underrated), Pet Shop, Falco, Camouflage, Sandra, Spandau Ballet, A-ha, Thompson Twins,
I love Alphaville too.
I love A-ha 🇳🇴 & Pet Shop Boys 🇬🇧 since 1985 🎹🎸🎵👌👌❤️
Alphaville was the first group that I could say, THIS is a band I like. Some really good memories of walking home on some summer nights listening to Lassie Come Home.
Yes love Alphaville only really found them in March 2021 but Forever Young was my prom song/theme yet they never played it during my prom
In 1988 I saw Depeche Mode and OMD. Best concert ever. Saw New Order that year too.

WHY does everybody sleep when it comes to EBN OZN and their hit "AEIOU, Sometimes Y"? It hit the airways in 1983, and was a fantastic song!!
It's almost entirely unknown outside of America, and even there it's one of those one-hit-wonders that passed many people by. In Europe if you mention AEIOU, people think of I.O.U. by Freeez, which really should be in everyone's top 100 synth pop hits.
was fürn eine schöne zeit in der man jung war und die miterleben durfte beste zeit im letzten Jahrhundert die 80 er und 90 iger
80s forever
Great decade of music.
INCREDIBLE TOP 10 THERE! Singing the whole way through. Loving the Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order...
Lol, I was too!
Many 2000s teens absolutely love 80's music. Courtesy our mom-dad & Internet.
I lived and partied through the 80's . Some of these songs didn't even made it on the top 100. Others, were in the top 40. Either way, I still miss the 1980's. It was a different time and there was a lot of change and music choices.
For me Visage fade to grey, is the best synt song of the 80ies. I'm a big Depeche mode fan, so that's great. Just mis Human League Being Boiled ❤
A classic , was it 80s though ?
@@annesmith2259 it was originally released in 1978, but re released in 1981 or 82, making the top thirty
I love the 80s I actually have 60 of the top 100 songs here on 12" vinyl still in my collection. I love synth pop it's all so catchy and infectious. The 80s had real style now in 2022 we have dreadfull rap with zero style and bad music.
Depeche mode
Vienna is my number 1!!! I never got tired of that perfect song.
I still isten to some of these bands being a young teenager in the 80s they are stuck in my heart🥰
I was big fan of euro synthpop bands: Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, A-ha, Depeche Mode, New Order , Tears For Fears, Duran Duran
Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yazoo, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, New Order were the kings of the 80s.
Followed by OMD, Stranglers, Simple Minds
Depeche mode then and now,RIP FLETCH.X
"The sun always shines on TV!!!!!"
Yazoo's Dont go is a glorious masterpiece 🌞🌞
Thank you for allowing us to be young again. For bringing back my favorite kind of music. May God bless all of you.
Gary Numan's Cars released in and got to No.1 in UK in 1979... small bit pick to this great track.
It was a surprise to see Gary Numan at the 1st spot, but a welcome one
true August 1979, but stayed in the charts for a long time and was No.1 in Canada in 1980... and was still in the charts in other countries in 1980 as well... so a crossover if you will
Just can’t get enough should be #1
Шикарная подборка моей юности. Под многие хиты я гасился на дискотеках. Спасибо!
Дерьмо
I really enjoyed this video
serious blast from the past , many I've never heard and some I just plain forgot
I think OMD souvenir would be my number one
thanks
These songs of Duran Duran should be in the top 10: The Reflex, Girls on film, Hungry like the wolf, New moon on Monday, Union of the snakes...
Smalltown Boy true Number One, definitely!
Когда речь заходит о синти поп, Depeche Mode мало не бывает)))))
Wonder soundtrack.
Miss the 80s.
Ministry: With Sympathy. .. very underated.....
Hands down, one of the best video representations of new wave/synth pop music that we’ve seen on UA-cam. Thank you so much for sharing!
Electronic 80s
Andy Fletcher in memory
Geezuz that was a trip back in time! So many of those songs are so good to this day! And videos were the You Tube of the day.
There are a hell of a lot of excellent tracks on this video wow , what else can one really say, except definately excellent Music. ROB.
This is one of the greatest new wave 80's top chart compilations I have ever stumbled across!! Thanks for posting🎉
The soundtrack to my teenage years....so old now ...sigh.....:)
White Door “The Extra”, The Expression “Nothing Changes”, The Trees “Delta Sleep”, Clio “Faces”, P.Lion “Happy Children”, Savage "Don't Cry Tonight", Raf “Self Control”, Jo Lemaire & Flouze “Je Suis Venue te Dire Que je M'en Vais”, Indochine “L'aventurier”, Righeira “No Tengo Dinero”, Martin L. Gore "Compulsion".
The ranking was a little peculiar to me but it was interesting and fun to watch.
Depeche mode , Duran Duran, A ha and more the best. But where is The Cure?
A few songs that were not on the list but deserves honorable mention:
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
O.M.D. - Secrets
Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey
Propaganda - P-Machinery
Eurythmics - Love Is a Stranger
Yello - Oh Yeah
YMO - Solid State Survivor
There are a few more..
Tears for Fears ~ The Hurting
Talk Talk ~ Life's What You Make It
Book of Love ~ Book of Love
The Payolas ~ Eyes Of A Stranger
Naked Eyes ~ No Flowers Please
Trans-X - Eyes of Desire
Alphaville ~ Red Rose

What about Thompson Twins? I dont see any☹
I totally agree on Kate Bush and Propaganda songs you mention.
@@gotsteem Life's What You Make It especially!
RIP Andy Fletcher.
A-ha 🇳🇴 - Pet Shop Boys - OMD - Information Society - Alphaville - Talk Talk - New Order - Tear For Fears -Depeche Mode - Camouflage - The Human League -
Rio by Duran Duran should have been a lot higher on the list. It was such an underrated song. The band is still going strong and is a 2022 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
Yay ! Sparks included !
Ultravox/Ultravox! both lineups were great, but the Midge Ure years really had some great tunes. Nice to see them recognized in your montage.
Loved the 80S...I was a teen and the music was so exciting...going to see different gigs and new styles coming out all the time.. unfortunately the likes of S.A.W and Simon Cowell put an end to experimental music. The record companies are not willing to invest in bands anymore, they want hits straight away or drop you..Most commercial acts don't write their own songs or even play instruments anymore....thanks for putting up the 80s synth songs...I loved the punk and hair metal songs from the 80s as well. Great memories 🙂
Heart like a wheel Human league.... Best synth
Hay muchos grupos que nunca los escuché en los 80, no tuvieron difusión.
This is the music I grew up with…Jean jackets with band pins, writing on school book covers, parachute pants, etc
I love all these songs that need to be placed on Spotify or XM channel..I ❤ed the 80s!!!!! It was such an awesome time that will never be repeated..so glad I was a teen back then!!
Rapaz que tempo bom saudades
Thank you for the throw back 80's classic love it
Its my life is a New Wave + Synth-pop masterpiece
So glad I was a teenager of the 80's
Keep making lists dude! You’re awesome
FANTASTIC list! Great job!
There were so many good bands and songs in the 80's
There were at least a hundred.
Nice to see pseudo echo on the list. Such underrated band
One of the greatest bands in the world
Right bands for the most part. But there are a lot of bands left off.
Golden Memories ! Thank you !!
What a great time and what a great music 😎👍
📢📢DEPECHE MODE 💪🎸🎤
Great selection. I went to see a tribute band that performed electro pop a few weeks ago. They were amazing and so many underplayed songs ie all the debut hits of spandau ballet, duran duran, Depeche mode etc but no songs by erasure, pet shop boys, nick kershaw, new order, aha or the thompson twins. I feel kinda cheated now lol
My personal faves from the synth era were omd and spandau although I would say neil Tennant had, and still has, the best vocals from that era.
Good ol Vince in the thumbnail
So. Many. Gems.
The police,Smiths,Cure, Depeche mode,Erasure,PSB gosto de todas..mas o New order é a minha banda favorita
The Police are 80s, but not synth pop.
VERY SAD NEWS YESTERDAY REGARDING THE PASSING OF ANDY "FLETCH " FLETCHER THE LEGENDARY KEYBOARD PLAYER WITH DEPECHE MODE.
ANDY WAS JUST SHORT OF HIS 61ST BIRTHDAY.
FROM ALL REPORTS ANDY WAS A GREAT PERSON.
RIP MATE.
Great list and a few I didn't know so a bonus there
Glorioso compendio musical de una década maravillosa de mi vida.
Gracias🙂
Fantastic list. TYVM
Saw Human League, Culture Club and Howard Jones together in concert 😎
i was bless t0 be a teen in that time
Thanks a lot great list!
Cars was released in 1979, but still, great list ;)
Great research!
Love the choice of music here, a lot I hadn't heard (and I was 14 in 1981 so that's pretty amazing!)
Similar, I was 18 in 1981 and a big music fan and didn't know many of these.
@@ScottKornfeld That's cool mate, it's not your fault.
Most of the songs are from a specific region of the world.
I'm in Sydney, Australia and we didn't get a lot of these songs on the radio or even late night music shows.
There is a certain % of these songs that really aren't of a good enough quality to get airplay in Australia.
I wonder if the uploader grew up in Germany or Italy or somewhere else in Europe, or even the US, because although many of the bands were British and synth pop was very popular here, some of the inclusions are almost unknown in the UK, and rightly so because they were rubbish.
Great work! So many fantastic songs there. You unearthed some real jewels.
Yet not enough. Still too many top acts vacant.
That's one hell of a music! Bravo!
Great video!
Relax, amooo 🤩
One of the thumbs up for this video was definitely from Buffalo Bill because
Q Lazzarus👍
Ah, yes! Some I do remember, they were played often, some not often enough, some of these I don't remember at all. Thanks for the selection of songs and for the memories!
@Dave M Weren’t there a bunch of one hit wonders that year?
Erasure ;-)
I actually think if MTV brought back these videos they would be back in the game🙏💯
Love the count down. Just missing the late Pete Shelley.
Outside edge, John Parr, honeymoon suite, loverboy..............
Cannot believe that there is no Japan on this list. Their albums Gentlemen takes Polaroids and Tin Drum are full of brilliant tracks that should be included.
Some of those choices were the greatest records ever: not just of 80's synth-pop.
Im an 80s baby. But man i wished i could had been a teen or my age now back in those days. Must had been fun. I LOVE THE 80s
Ah, yeah. This is really good! Some of these I've long forgotten. I would hear these songs late at night on WHFS(Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, USA) and small university radio stations.
Gracias, agregué un par de canciones a mi playlist que no sabía el nombre
I love Vince Clark
He is genius
awesome! could you also do one for 80s italo disco?
This video allowed me to discover some songs i`d never listened before
