I may be wrong about this but I think persimmons have the greatest sugar content of any fruit. Interesting that they’re your favorite, fig boss.

Plant some extra for the squirrels. It’s a native mammal. Most state laws also state that you can only kill small (native) mammals on your property during the appropriate season (not with poison or snares) unless you have a permit to do so outside of the season.

Years ago this dude picked all the persimmons off these wild public trees - stating that if he didn't take them, no one would. Well wildlife depend on them and he took them all. Now wildlife took his persimmons and he killed them all. Humans are very destructive. They're like squirrels that walk upright.

Im currently obsessed with american persimmons.. I've bought seeds from several suppliers with different genetics.. Hoping some are hardy enough to survive here at 64dgr north in Norway.. :) nice video as always!

woe, seeds will take forever to fruit and taste of fruit won't be known, better if you buy some trees. I used to be obsessed with young women, but I'm old now and so now I like Persimmons and fruit trees.

I had a battle with squirrels myself. I used a live trap and relocated them. I was up to nine last season, a bit less this year. I definitely understand how you feel.

Why relocate a rat with a tail, cartoons have made them human to many :(. Time for me to get a couple of those WCS squirrel traps, they get all my nuts and have made their way into my attic, the 22 rifle can't keep up. Killed 10, but they keep breeding like rats.

Install some owl houses on your tallest trees, they do eat squirrels if they move into your box.

Ross, Another example of your talent/ability to get some major results with less than optimum conditions....partial shade competition form trees, etc. but with good fruit set/harvest on a wide variety of species. Looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish with more property, full sun, reduced tree competition. The best for a gr8 growing future! Randy/GA

I found a nice persimmon tree this week. It was on the edge of a parking lot where I was working. There was lots of fruit dropping and perfectly ripe. I have a Japanese Fuyo one but it didn't give me any fruit this year for some reason. It had a lot of buds and fruit but they all fell off. I haven't seen natives that big before!!

Have two of the same squirrel trap as you. One word of warning is that it instantly kills only about 80-90% of the time. So I would check it frequently, especially in the morning, and be prepared to have to take additional measures to finish the job. It really is my least favorite part of growing fruit but realistically you can't grow fruit to full ripeness in suburbia unless you also control the local squirrel overpopulation.

    • @fruitsyfarms5115

Yep. We have an acre full of fruit trees in Charlotte and don’t get a single piece of fruit without traps. We use the A18 and A24. The traps reset themselves and the dogs clean up the mess. Works great!

I love persimmons- astringent and non-astringent. Though, I like the non-astringent more because we don't need to wait for them to ripe to enjoy. I've grown 8 non-astringent varieties and 2 astringent varieties.

It seems, you plant your persimmons very close, something like 6feet or less, altough they supposed to gros 15-20feet circle.

The only thing that has stopped me from jumping head first into growing persimmons is the many varieties and how the effect each other (pollination variants/seed-setting). I can't get over this stupid feeling that I still don't know enough to choose an optimal collection and not choose one that might 'ruin' others (for example I saw a vid from a seattle grower comparing pollinated vs unpollinated coffeecake persimmon - the unpollinated one was basically a seedless hachiya whereas the pollinated one, while slightly better tasting, had annoyingly large seeds that I would consider not worth it). It's a bit confusing.

Sounds like you have a lot of humidity where you're at. More than me. There's no fungus on the leaves here. Air flow and maximum sunlight is critical if that's your issue.
