Michael McConkey, owner of Edible Landscaping, takes us on a tour of the ripe persimmons from our orchard! Filmed and produced by the amazing Katie Garrett! katiegarrett.co...
I have Nikitas Gift and Meader. No fruit yet the trees are less than 2 years old. I did see a flower on the Meader already but fruit did not set. I am in Pennsylvania zone 6A.
I love your campus of fruits! I've visited several times and you let me graze around. You also have the most beautiful driveway in fall. May your business thrive as more people discover your high quality plants!
A big round of applause for your videos, my friend! The thoughtfulness and creativity you infuse into each one make them exceptional. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.
Great video and recap of multiple varieties! We have a very nice native persimmon on our property, took us several years to realize it and should have videoed the kids trying them unripe. We have found that on our tree they can be picked on tree if they are very soft, no need to wait on frost or to fall. (Although most fall before you need to pick any off the tree.) Hoping to graft some Asian varieties onto American rootstock this year.
Hi there! I'm from Bulgaria and have been growing Rosseyanka successfully for several years and it hasn't suffered any cold or frost damage and has born fruit already. It hasn't been colder than -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit). So I'm thinking any of the Ukrainian/Russian hybrids should be alright, but maybe first I should ask how cold it gets over there? I also had (Ichi ki Kei) Jiro, but it was killed by a late frost in April (-5 Celsius). From the Japanese varieties I did have Saijo as well, but it was a small tree that leafed out very late in it's first season, hence the wood didn't mature well and it died the following winter. Other lose young shoots and buds which hurts blooming and fruiting. So I've really focused on hybrids. I did gave a couple of American persimmons on diospyros lotus rootstock. I suspect some incompatibility. They almost all died. The ones I later grafted on diospyros Virginians rootstock are doing very well. The American persimmon is cold gsrfyy, but the fruits are smaller. Costata is a Japanese variety that is doing better. But I don't know what you have in Romania and if you could order trees or scionwood from Bulgaria or elsewhere.
Just to add that Rosseyanka should be fine to as low as -30 Celsius. Nikitskaya to -26. Most hybrids can withstand up to negative 24-25 degrees Celsius. Thanks for the beautiful and informative video!
I’m just recently starting to research the persimmon tree upon recommendation from the state forester. Since they’re for wildlife in a timber area, he recommends native species only, so the American species will be my option. Hopefully the deer don’t eat the trees before they mature.
I've always known about them but I've never tasted one. I recently found out there are now some that aren't astringent. I want to plant a bunch of those trees. I have a food forests going right now with about 100 trees and bushes.
Thanks for helping to keep me learning. Early in my life I bought 2 persimmon trees. Not knowing anything about them, they were American. They produced tiny astringent fruit that I hated. After I figured out that they needed to be so soft they were mostly seeds it wasn't worth it. I gave up. Now I own a Fuyu, Jiro , Chocolate, Hachiya and Izu.
I enjoyed the tour. I hope to get a Ruby American Persimmon from you this year. I noticed it doesn't appear you mulch around your Persimmons. Any reason why or why not? Thank you.
Great video, really nice quality! What are the hardiest, earliest cultivars you would recommend? Im currently growing american p. root stock from seed, but struggling to choose scion wood. Live in coastal Norway, cool summers.
Nice tour. I have to use diospyros lotus as rootstock and read the non astringent varietes bar a few grow weakly on it, an interstem with a hybrid should help that.
I have a Fuyu variety and this season, no fruit stayed on the tree. All the babies dropped long ago. In the past, this grafted tree gave me at least 15 fruits (it’s small and only 5 years old). Any suggestions? I don’t do anything but mulch the tree. Maybe compost if I have some to spare. TIA!
It needs regular watering. Maybe the soil got too dry so it dropped the fruits. You can put some compost & long acting balanced fertilizer pellets (not a lot!) if the tree is small & scraggly. If it becomes vigorous, stop giving fertilizer or use the low nitrogen one.
Love your persimmons presentation so lovely ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I live kinda close to edible landscaping nursery and I keep coming back over and over because I love the quality of the trees they have.

Wow you have different kinds of persimmons , do you sell ready to plant persimmons , it should be very encouraging to plant …tnx a lot …
Great job, how long ago you started? It seems like some of the trees are 25-35 years old.
Hello, These varieties of persimmons up to what temperature can they withstand in winter? I am from Romania

What persimmon variety is last to ripen
My tree produced an extra large fuyu at 18.45 ounces

I'm in mid Missouri. I have Yates and Prok. Prok is far superior to Yates here on our farm.
I love persimmon fruit even it is very expensive here in the Philippines.

American persimmons should work, but we can't ship to you. Sorry.
Great job on the harvesting
Did you ever succeed in rooting persimmons from cuttings? If yes which varieties? Thank You
Grafting is more successful.
Hi, I love that fruit and I live in zone 4 please if you can help and recommend the right variety. That can’t take cold.
American persimmons.
Nice tour. I have to use diospyros lotus as rootstock and read the non astringent varietes bar a few grow weakly on it, an interstem with a hybrid should help that.
Could I visit your farm?
Yes, we are open 7 days, 9 to t.
