    Got my first fig tree start. Here is the story of how it happened. I've helped my old neighbor fix things for many years. The last thing was his leaf blower and had to buy new carb. Dropped off the blower and as always he is happy. I never expected anything in return and always refused money. We walked out to his green house ( fixed that last year so it could be used again) and there was some fig starts. He gave me one and now its my baby. Been watching many videos how to be sure it grows well.

    We have 15 Fig Tre varieties growing here in NE Coastal Florida. All our figs produce for 10 months.. The trees lose their leaves in February when the new leaves appear.. Beer's Red Fig and White Madeira #1 are extremely large produces, with no Rust. Italian Honey is the lowest producer, but a great taste. Olympia Fig never stops producing, almost all year.

    Hey, great vid, pro tip: change ur camera’s focusing settings from genetic or “average” focusing zones to center weighted when bouncing back and forth like that in order to minimize out of focus subjects :)

    This has been a great year in southeast Pa. I'm in Chester County. I didn't cut them down last year b/c mild winter. Both of my trees are doing great. I came up with a fantastic way to eat them. I get raspberry or blueberry goat cheese from Aldis. Slice it like a 50cent piece, then slice a fig in half and put on it. Together is so yummy.

    What has been your experience with fig sap? I live in Arizona and started 2 figs from cuttings- white madeira and negra d'agde. They are currently about 2 feet tall, one with fruits already, and they are in pots. While I was adjusting the irrigation bubblers, I noticed the leaves caused my arms to be a little red and very itchy in places I came in contact with them. I don't have any known allergies, so I was surprised by this. After some research, I found reports that figs cause phytophotodermatitis and the sap can be caustic, causing 2nd degree burns. This appears to be most prominent in areas with high UV exposure. I have young nieces and nephews that come to my house, so naturally I was concerned and am contemplating giving away my fig trees. Anyway, I was curious if you've had any experience with these types of issues.

    Hi Ross,
    I'm new to fig growing. I'm in zone 6b. I was going to plant some close to my house. Are there any potential issues with the root system compromising (invading) my sewer lines or the foundation of my house. How invasive are fig roots?
    Thanks

    • @AlenAbdula
      @AlenAbdula 3 місяці тому

      Anything planted close to foundation can seek water in cracks and sewer lines. If soil is well drained roots will grow lateral and not towards structures. Test if the soil drains by digging a planting hole twice as large as the pot, filling it up with water and see if that water is gone by tomorrow. Plant on south facing wall if you're in zone 6. Or have some kind of protection from the north winds.

    • @RossRaddi

      No to the foundation. Be careful about any lines.

    • @AlenAbdula
      @AlenAbdula 3 місяці тому +1

      You can plant fall or spring. It's about considerations for each that you have to worry. In spring, you are trying to get roots established before summer heat, in fall you're trying to establish roots before winter frost. Am in zone 6, and am planning on planting in ground soon. Lots of mulch. And pile snow on top of the tree after covering it with burlap. I usually keep my figs in fabric pots I just put in shed over winter. This year am putting some in ground.

    I have room for 3 more fig trees. I planted two English Brown Turkey & four Celeste because those two are proven to do well in my region of Louisiana and survive very hard freezes. What variety would you recommend to add here? I`m considering using one of the Brown Turkey trees for grafting since they`re such late producers so far, grow way too fast, and way too many fruits never ripen before cold weather.

      @@RossRaddi I wonder if Smith was the fig tree everyone had when I was young because the fruits look exactly like the figs I remember. It had to have been Smith or Celeste. Nobody ever mentioned names...we just rooted cuttings from the trees everyone else had. My Celeste trees were planted this year and grew slowly and didn`t fruit.
      When I left the last place where we had original family stock of the trees growing I couldn`t bring cuttings with me. The lot they were on was sold and gated. These Brown Turkey Figs don`t look familiar so I think this is the first time I`ve seen one. Maybe the late production will be a good thing. The trees we used to grow ripened in July/August. I remember some green fruit drop too. The Celeste leaves on my trees don`t look like the trees I remember either and neither do the stems.

      @RossRaddi Just ordered some from your link 👍. I installed irrigation to all my raised beds, and I also ran a lateral main to feed all my potted plants, including my little fig farm. I am using the drip style, but these spot spitters are an excellent choice as they feed in the ground. Less evaporation effect in my Ocala heat hole location. Thanks for the great tip.
