- Did Berggren ever dread an interview? Find out his answer and why it’s a name you may recognize.
In a conversation surrounding racing’s legendary voices, Berggren brings Dale Jr. to broadcasting school as Dick shares his approach to the craft and makes suggestions to help Dale grow.
Listen to The Dale Jr. Download for the full interview. Available on dirtymomedia.com or any podcasting platform.
The best response for an engine failure was by Kenny Schrader. When asked what happened, Kenny said the oil pan couldn’t hold all the parts.
They asked Schrader one time what the in car
fire extinguishers felt like going off and he replied it was like opening a 12 pack of beer cans at the same time....good stuff
😀
absolutely LOVE Kenny, always has something hilarious to say
A close second is Dale Jr saying he “Broke a damn....something.” Clearly didn’t know what broke but wasn’t happy about it.
I would think it would be Sterling Marlin. They ask him what happened when the engine blew. His response "car done blown up".
I never thought Dick was too serious. It isn't a circus, despite the way the sport has been increasingly presented to fans. He could laugh, he was great during rain delays, people trusted and respected him. Dr. Dick, you are an icon of NASCAR.
Probably means like behind the scenes.
I know this probably won't be seen. PLEASE bring on Bob Jenkins next!!!!! I'd hope to see him at least once. He was the voice of 80's and 90's ESPN/ABC NASCAR. The man is an icon in broadcasting.
Unfortunately he's battling cancer. If he could though, it would be excellent.
@@BigSkyModelWorkshop Thanks. I'm aware and the timing is awful. Hopefully Bob wins the battle and is healthy enough to come on the podcast one day. It would be a shame to not have him interviewed.
We're all fans of racing but we're also fan's of our broadcasters and for me that was ESPN and ABC. Bob, Benny and Ned. IMO they were the best booth in NASCAR and all of racing.
Chris Economaki and Ken Squier were so fun to listen to with some great anecdotes, they were perfect at improv.
And they called the race great. My favorite duo growing up, rioting for Cake Yarborough 28 Hardee's car Darrell Waltrip in the 88 Gatorade car and of course Dale in the Wrangler 3 car
Junior, you are the future of racing journalism/broadcasting. Your knowledge, presentation and humility are the best. Keep it up young man.
He has talent for it, have a level of access to people that is a dream to other media guys and is a great storyteller overall.
We already lost many great ones that are mentioned in his interviews, and others will eventually go. And the stories of the ones among us have to be told. No one more suited to the job than Jr, no matter the angle you look at things.
Jrrrr.. Love listening to dr. Dick. BIG THANK YOU from the fans
Dick Berggren was 80 years old in this interview. So sharp. Could have told me he was 65 and i would have believed it.
What a great interview w Dick Berggren ... I thoroughly enjoyed it !
Ur an awesome sportscaster Dale ...
U shouldn't be uncomfortable to rewatch urself ...
Ur totally knowledgeable, informative, humble, honest, no BS, great storyteller, have great stories & FUNNY ... Yes Funny ! ❤ listening to talk ❤Ya
I was always amazed that Benny Parsons, from the booth, could accurately analyze any incident on the track. I don't think the crew chiefs knew what had happened at that point but later it would be confirmed that Benny was right.
Dale jr u need let some them boys give u a few lesson then fox have u in the real boot fox
You are so spot-on with your comment!
For my money, BP was the absolute best race booth analyst not named Bobby Unser that ever spoke syllables into a Hot Mic in the history of Motorsports 🤔...or as my old silver-headed Daddy would have said "He knows of what he speaks" 🙏✝️
I love that Dale Earnhardt Jr. has such respect for these subtle but important nuances of the sport, like the broadcaster vocabulary. Those Squireisms were classic -- my favorite squireism was when NASCAR ran at Talladega in the draft -- He would say, 'Earnhardt is saying come dance with me, and Irvan obliges...'
Yep. Classic
They RUMBLE off of Turn 2 & THUNDER down the backstretch here at Talladega!!
He, & of course Barney Hall on the radio, are The GOAT's IMO 💪
This is literally one of my favorite channels on UA-cam.
As far as memorable announcing goes, I always loved Benny Parsons. His passion really showed in the booth. Iconic lines like "man oh man" and "look out!" and if you search Benny Parsons - "This is the Doggonest Thing I've Ever Seen in my Life!" you'll thank me.
Benny would tell stories on the ABC broadcasts when he was in the booth with Paul Page and Bobby Unser.
WOW ! God love June Bug and what he is doing for the sport of auto racing ! Putting personality back in the sport .... something that has been lacking for years ! Guys like Dick were so important in the big picture and they are almost all gone .
Last time I was this early Junior drove the Gargoyles car. In all seriousness this was an excellent conversation and after listening to the whole thing I hope that more people learn about Dick Berggren the way we all did.
He was always one of my favorites
I never knew he raced himself. It was so cool to hear his story about bringing the racecar to college, and moving to hear his story about his final race.
They them boys paid way for the ones now they make as mush money as drivers do
Dick is the consummate professional, never stuck up or too above it all to help out a local track pit reporter. Being a pit reporter at Texas Motor Speedway in the early 2000's, our crew was mixed with the TV pros. We were assigned 7 to 10 boxes and on a couple of races, I had the same pit boxes as he. They are right, you had to pick your time to get in there, but when the pit reporting chief was yelling for race information in your ear, you had to go to the crew chief stand and get what you could (every pit, we had to report on tires, fuel, pit time, etc.). There were some like Everham, Knaus, and a few others who would snap or give you looks like daggers during the race, but generally, they were pretty good about giving you what you needed. During some difficult times, particularly when everyone is coming in for a green flag stop it can be overwhelming. He was pretty good about sharing information...Racing media legend and nice guy - thanks for the help, Mr. Berggren!
Your job is to paint pictures with words. I’m an old radio guy so I know TV is different but that’s the gig. You have the vocabulary of NASCAR and a driver. You’re naturally enthusiastic and you’ve already started building a library of your own phrases. Big assed spoilers. Slidejob. Things like that. The trick is to recognize those quips and make them signature phrases but not crutches you use all the time. It’s hard work and reviewing your broadcasts and actively thinking about different ways to say the same thing repeatedly becomes second nature. If you aren’t getting reviews by the bosses at NBC ask for some. Self critiquing will make you a better broadcaster, just like it made you a better driver. Oh ya, steal some of those old gems from the veterans. See if they get a reaction. No one will mind you paying tribute to those guys. Great interview with Dick, btw. I love the inside look at the broadcasters. Get Lee Diffee on. That would be awesome!!
One of THE BEST interviews yet!!!!
I met Dick alongside Michael Waltrip at All American Speedway in Roseville, CA. Both of em were a pleasure to be around.
Home of The Roseville Rocket "Scott Pruitt" Hi to his family at Home!
👋🤠
My favorite race reporter, with Despain in 2nd.... Dick youve made a lifetime of racing memories for lots and lots of people.
Happy to say that when I was growing up, perfecting my english skills I would always look forward to Cup reruns on Speed Channel, every time Dr. Berggren was on, it was time to listen.
I enjoy watching people like Jr who don’t need to be the center of attention.....when he interviews people he seems truly interested in the people and subjects being discussed....the guy is the non intimidator when it comes to these interviews and as a result his guests seem to open up.
I put Dick Berggren up there with Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett, Chris Economaki, Bob Jenkins & Mike Joy. To a lesser extent and not to take anything away from these fine people, David Hobbs, Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Eli Gold, Steve Byrnes, Dr. every Punch & Allen Bestwick. Great episode gang!! Keep them coming. Speaking of which, any possibility to get Ken Squier & Bob Jenkins on the podcast soon? Cheers
Listened to Dave Moody at Thunder Road, amazing what comes out of that man, gifted!
Dick announced in a iracing league race I was apart of this last year. Great guy. Much respect to announcers not a easy job. I announced at a local track for a handful of years. Some of the best years while I was racing and announcing
One of the greatest broadcasters in the booth was Neil Bonnett. He could catch an issue on the track before it became an issue...
U r buddy neil I never pull for neil till the last two years he race he was the man
Totally agree bud! Neil was going to be a great booth race analyst for many years to come, his was a terrible loss to us all, loved his voice 🙏✝️
JR..... you were a great driver...... BUT, you are and ICON when it comes to your interviews.... total ICON.... you are so real....don't hold back.... they just get better and better.....
Guys like Berggren, Economacki, Joy, Punch, etc. bring up so many great memories. One of my favorites (before every race was televised) was listening to Eli Gold call the race on the radio.
my dad would turn sound down on tv and up on radio
You must be an Alabama fan
Eli is as classic as it gets. Severely underrated.
I know now that he doesn't have many broadcasts left with and the health scares he had. Hopefully the can give him a chance for one final goodbye on the racetrack and on football with Alabama, in his own terms.
Nascar and the SEC have many marquee names in radio broadcasting especially. Eli is on both lists.
Junior has it. 'Slide job!' comes to mind.
Miss Dr. Berggeren at the track such a gem
This is absolutely one of the most interesting DJD episodes 🙌🏽
Dick....thank you for your honesty. Thank you for your honesty. That was pretty special!!
I think this program is one the best to present racing past and present. Always interesting.
you Invented "SLIDE JOB" Dale....you'll be Great too. Nice show.
Toughest interview ALL TIME has to go to David Hobbs 1990 Daytona 500 w/ Dale. But I always say if Dale can do THAT interview, your candy-ass can explain what happened, too, Driver X.
Seeing Dick Berggren makes me think of Open Wheel magazine. He did a good job with it.
I absolutely love what you're doing Dale! For so many, if not all long time "Core Fan's", guy's like Doctor Dick were the voice of Stockcar Racing in America & my old Petty Blue pumpin heart perks right up when I see/listen to the DJD with GREAT guests like this!
I knew your podcast was headed towards great thing's when you had Gary Balough on, cause that took guts!
Don't get me wrong, I love that guy, but alotta folks don't, like sponsors & other members of "The Moralistic Media" 🙄
Keep up the GREAT work there at Dirty Mo Media, cause I'm gonna keep on watchin/listenin/supportin 💪🤠
Btw, how bout Eli Gold, maybe even Ol' Sterlin 😃!! LOL, just wishin out loud, so many Legend's, so little time 🙏
Dave Moody & Ken Squire got that lingo from watching an annoucing races at Thunderoad in Barre ,VT ,1/4 mile high bank oval! Definitely the best track in the North east! Many cup guys come an race on loudon weekend! Dale Jr definitely needs to come check it out, maybe driver a late model for Dale Shaw racing! You would love the atmosphere!
I love watching the show. You don't have to worry about a voice or a vernacular. Your greatest strength is pressing for the answer to your question. You do such a great job of getting the most out of every interview and you press the guests well. You want the entire story. I would worry less about some silly broadcast voice deal and keep doing what you're doing. Your broadcasts do more for racing than any other racing format can do so keep pressing your guests and being good at this.
Your a wonderful personality and announcer
What a great interview!!
I just stumbled upon this video again, and I loved the whole interview on the podcast. I think Dave Moody would be a great guest on the podcast, I’ve always enjoyed listening to him whether on MRN or His radio show
Howard Cosell, Ken Squire, Chris Economaki, Harry Carey, Vin Skully, even Mike Joy, all of the great announcers of the past started broadcasting to an audience that couldn't see what they were seeing and they knew this so they described what they were seeing in vivid detail. Most if not all of them started their careers in radio. If you want to be a better broadcaster, imagine you are talking to an audience that can't see what you are seeing. This is why it was so great to hear Ken Squire broadcast a race, the people he started out talking to had to use their imaginations. The broadcasters of today don't describe in the same way because they assume the viewer can see what they are seeing. Listening to today's announcers is pretty boring. Sometimes especially during a baseball game, I will turn the volume on the TV off and Turn on the radio. Food for thought.
Hello Dale and Dr Berggren awesome interview I can listen to Dr Berggren all the time. Wishing everyone there well Take Care Guys
Love listening to Berggren
Great interview! I think part of the reason Ken Squier was so descriptive was he had to be - he came up calling races for radio broadcasts, so he had to use words to paint a picture for the listeners. Not to take anything away from Dick Berggren or any of the other TV broadcasting legends, but it's a difference.
Dick Berggren is the coolest old man out there 😎 😎
I wish Dale could interview Ken Squier in studio
Can I just say this man hasn't aged a day since I first saw him on TV in 01 Atlanta
glad this guy's still around, dude was a hoot.
Chris Economaki Started at a little 1/2 mile racetrack in Nazareth Pa. He was a great announcer!
Favorite Dick Berggren moment has to be Sonoma 2001 as the pit reporter on Gilligan’s Island, they always found a way to spice up pre-race broadcasts back then
Dale: I like it best when you talk nuts and bolts, how the car should feel and how you drive the track. Your first test broadcast from Martinsville was awesome.
Great video!
I enjoyed listening to Moody! He was the best.
Love, love, love Dick Berggren.
Hello.... NBC Sports I need this episode and Ryan Blaney's to re-air. Both had a couple of glitches and I need the full episodes to go in my Dale Jr folder on my DVR. 😁
Very interesting interview
Dale is our #1 guy in NASCAR period.Jr for President.
Dick Berggren looking good and well respected!
I loved Dick and Ken Squire doing the Motegi race....
If you really wanted us to watch the rest of this pod cast----------you should have it on here. This the only pod cast I watch.
Great interview everybody!
Can’t forget about Vin Scully!!! Hate the Dodgers, but I’d listen to Vin no matter the team he was talking about.
Dale Jr's best one came from the first race I took my boy and wife to... "SLIDEJOB! SLIDEJOB!"
I heard Buddy Baker say "he's taking the turns like he's tied to a stump"
I grew up with these announcers...Chrrriiiis EEECoooonamaki. ...great guys
Legend
I remember that Earnhardt interview. Dale asked if anyone knew why Jr. was so much faster than he was. Darrell Waltrip said "'Cause Jr's wide open; you ain't." And Sr.'s response was "...Welp;; GET IN THE CAR DARRELL!!"
"SLIDE JOB! SLIDE JOB!"
nuff said 👍
My favorite from Ken
"Way back in the weeds he came from"
Best quips in sports today... Mike Lange of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team.
When I was young, I thought Chris was a college professor who did races for fun.
Benny Parsons was a good announcer/
my personal saying when things go wrong is " that's one nickel check that will never be cashed"!
9:38 "Squire----isms" That's an excellent way to put it Dale. Ken Squire, Pat Summerall on the NFL...they don't make them like that anymore!
I like the idea of you and Rutledge calling a horse race once a year!!! Anybody???
Squierisms.
So how long before we get Daleisms? I mean. Slide job's already one, but Ken Squier had a way with words. I forgot who made it, but there's a fantastic video on YT of several dozen of Ken Squier's awesome word choices during races
Mr. Berggren was my favorite, amongst many excellent reporters. But nothing against Mike Joy, except he knows so much more than he wants to announce. Like he is too courteous and wants Larry or Jeff, or back then, DW to answer a technical or driver question, when I know he knows the answer and could sometimes say it more succinctly
Dale, Dick is right, don't be afraid to go back over your broadcasts. It's like proof reading your comment before you post it. Just don't over analyze it. By the way, I'm glad you have that #77 model and poster on the wall. It was one of my favorite paint schemes from back then.
I bought the 77 because I had The HyGain and Belden Asphalt cars which are basically the same scheme.
@@eddean6663 We saw that car in Daytona and my friend painted his Leguna stock car that design.
Barney Hall was the best of them all
Still rockin the hat.
Jr. is highly self aware and has some anxiety issues much like myself. We tend to be our own worst critics to the point that if we were to turn on a tape of us working, we'd turn white as a ghost crawl in the corner, and try to hide lol. It's a self embarrassment that isn't necessary, but it isn't voluntary either. I had to force myself a LOT to do what Dick said here during my time as a writer and a videographer. It DOES pay off in the end though. Realizing you're making progress and improving really helps you to get over that apprehension to critique yourself.
Can we PLEASE have Matt Yocum on here?!
9:00-Concerning 'Squireisms', do you really want to develop this skill? Go into Comedy Improvisation. You'll feel like an idiot the first few times, but this is a great way to get the mind to work in that way. Another way to develop this skill, look at races like you're the world's biggest smart-ass, you'll begin to see things differently.
I've been asked to explain on countless occasions as to how I come up with jokes or funny responses to things on the fly, and there really isn't any explanation, short of:
1. It's a skill that's developed over many many hours of first bombing at it
2. If I have to explain it...
3. When someone is able to explain math to me in a way that actually catches hold, I'll teach them how to do improvisation
I never liked Berggren, he was always pointed out negative things driver's did right before he interviewed them. But I guess that is what made him great in the eye's of the media.
What is on your tee shirt?
Squires used to use clapboard to clapboard ( side by side)! Could have been "79"
Junior needs to watch an old F1 broadcast with Murray Walker commentating if he wants to hear some great off the cuff vocabulary and phrases.
Murray Walker and James Hunt is the greatest booth of F1. And this will not change.
He called too many great moments for us to keep count, unfortunately some very sad ones as well.
I've been an announcer and broadcaster in auto racing and athletic events, and I purposely DO NOT listen to myself. As Jr. says, I'm scared to listen to it... I get compliments all the time, but, I worry about being my own worst critic and locking up from my own dissatisfaction. I want it to be natural, not contrived...
Dick Berggren wore a leather jacket on pit road, didn't he?
Thought he was the coolest guy at the track when I was a kid.
Who knows where to find video of Chris Economaki and AJ Foyt's interview regarding Linda Vaughn being busted? Hahaha
I would be like Dale Jr., and not want to hear my broadcast. Just roll with it & not second guess myself.
Go ahead and hit the pacecare!
What, why?
If you would left him alone never inter view him again he would have been begging you to come back
Ah come on Jr you are as well spoken as Tony Romo at explaining whats going on.
I miss Chris Economaki and National Speed Sport News. I miss Dick Berggren & Stock Car Racing Magazine. VERY few NASCAR media types today are worth their weight in Spam. Too politically correct, too afraid to ask the TOUGH questions.
a woman pit reporter will keep things more civil as being rude to a woman reporter could end up costing you dearly.
Often times you iritate the hell out of me on the broadcast, If you went back and whatched it you might see the same thing .
