Using a Free book promotion sites to get your book out to thousands of readers is one of the cheapest and easiest tactics in order to get downloads. However, actually getting sales or reviews out of that is pretty hard - unless you know how to time, schedule and reap the rewards of a well-placed free book promotion push.

Selling books of short stories is always tough if you are not an established author.
Finally, someone who understands! I've got a Steampunk short story Ebook and a brief collection of my poetry on Amazon. I'm working on a space-opera novel I plan to upload to Draft2Digital, along with subsequent books.
Selling any story or non fiction book is hard. I sell other top authors on amazon and that's hard too. So either way.. Lmfao

Hi Dave, I was going over this video again because I found it very useful. I recall asking you the meaning of a content upgrade. I did my research and I figured it out. The only thing that I didn't quite understand is how must I apply my content upgrade to the start, middle and the end of the book when I am giving it to them for free book promotion? could you please help me?

Hi Dave. First off, thank you for being so incredibly detail oriented. So many people give short answers, because they know the subject from years of experience, but you talk to us as though you are us..which is awesome. I purchased Publisher Rocket about a year ago, and it's amazing. The info on Keywords and Categories is helpful beyond measure. A year you ask? Yeah, I'm shy at pulling the trigger on my release, despite my eBook files being done, and a hardcopy (single print) on my book shelf at home. You may be able to help spur myself along, if you could answer some of these for me:
1. When I setup my promotion with all of these sites (As many as will accept my book category) is it best to set them all up to begin the same day?
2. Should I put a link to my KDP author bookshelf at the end of my book, so people outside of the KDP readers "may" go there to review it? Or does where they review it have little influence, as long as it is being reviewed?
3. Does it matter how my book release and promotion release lineup with each other? Another words, is it best to schedule the release and the promotions to begin the same day? Or does a promotion beginning a few weeks after a new release have little influence, other than the date heightened coverage of my book may begin?

One question- do I understand correctly that if someone had previously left a review on the book on Amazon (unverified); when they “buy” the book in a free promo, that old review becomes “verified” automatically?

Hi Dave! My husband and I self-published his first novel in a series of 3. It launched on Amazon 3/2/18. We bought your software KDP Rocket, and are now in contract with the ads team you recommended (not seeing much results yet) My question is: What is your opinion on having the book in libraries? We do have one in each of the 5 branches in our local parish, but have not felt led to go beyond that at this point, mainly until we start making some decent revenue. (bleeding $, ha!) What are your thoughts?
Hi Laura, awesome and congrats on the launch! As for your question, I will admit that I don't have much experience with libraries as a tactic. I know of a couple of authors who did and none of them spoke of it like it made much of a difference...if at all.

Hey Dave thanks for this awesome tip! I want to know how to implement this if your launching a novel. I want to put out my book in the next two months but I have no platform but I'm currently working on a website. Do you think I should use this strategy on my launch week or wait a few weks to look at my sales and then implement this strategy. Please let me know. Thanks!!
Without a platform or large list or following, I definitely think you should use this strategy upon launch. It will help to beef up your numbers, which will make your book look more popular in Amazon's eyes and hopefully you'll get more reviews so that when you start the normal sales push, you have some credibility and social proof to the book.

here's a question for you, can I use an animated short video to promote a book, look at it as a teaser video, and if yes, are there provisions on these sites to add a link to the teaser video?
There are some that would allow you to do that. But not too many. They are usually strick or rigid. Make sure to put that teaser video on your author central page though.

Great video! When you run FB Ads to amazon, do you send the traffic via a landing page for lead generation? How do you track the success of the campaign? (As far as I know it's not allowed anymore to run traffic through your amazon associates account for tracking.)
I setup ads that lead to a email optin. Then I work my autoresponder to track and gain other sales, not just the book to include affiliate links and other opportunities. I'm actually creating a full free course on the email system for authors later in the beginning of 2018.
Can I hyperlink within the book to affiliate offers ?
@kindlepreneur, how effective is facebook marketing, when boosting posts. Sadly, i have already published my book, and i am a bit behind the marketing aspect. I had a successful book signing at a well known bookstore, i just want to keep the momentum going. Should i do facebook boost in conjunction with promotion sites?? My kindle price is 2.99. @Kindlepreneur I've got a question which could warrant its own video... I'm a narrator and voiceover artist so am still learning the other side of the coin. My wife is an author but has found herself writing in two conflicting genres. Her first genre is children's books, while the second is Adult & post-apocalyptic which contains controversial material. Should she establish a second avatar or pen name to differentiate the two genres for the sake of marketing?
I'd recommend the two being separate. We authors need to brand ourselves. It would be hard to truly know what "Nike" is if they are kitchenware and Sports stuff, right? Imagine if somene read her children's book and actively pursued her website, only to find Adult Post apoc stuff on it...they'd think they were in the wrong spot and turn around.

Should I wait until I have the third book out in my series before I do aggressive promotion? I read on another blog its best to have at least 5 titles available before offering one for free or 99 cents? What's the optimal advice on this?
I think you'll get more bang for your buck that way. However, that doesn't mean I recommend forgoing the tactic all togther for others out there. It is a great way to procure reviews (not a lot but more than you would have had without it). The same could be said about doing AMS and other paid ad/promo.
Cool thanks. I need to get the most bang for my buck. And that seems to make sense. I watched a Book Bub webinar. Seems really hard to get approved for a feature, though I know several self-pubbers that have launched their careers, though that was earlier on.
Yeah, bookbub doesn't have AS MUCH ROI, but it is still wicked awesome for sales regardless - so definitely worth the push.

I have an ebook I created to build an email list and use email marketing. It is in the survival niche entitled -- Guide to Survival Supply Kit Preparation. I already have affiliate links and my website links in the ebook. I like the idea of adding an opt-in form as well. My question is, Would posts on these sites be beneficial for my purpose? Thank you.

Great video, Thanks for sharing... Question? Is this marketing service only for the eBooks? What about the paperback books? Does Amazon have a ppc service for authors with paperback?
The ones discussed in the above video are for ebooks. However, Amazon's PPC system called AMS can do the trick. You have to have an ebook and setup your ads for the ebook version of your book. However, the ads still show up in book searches, and peopel who click on your add still see the different formats of your book. I've sold a LOT more of my book versions through AMS. Since Kindle Unlimited restricts my distribution of eBooks across other platforms if I'm enrolled in their service, I don't think this is applicable to me right now.

We two very senior individuals, have published a Book on Pranayama (YOGIC BREATHING) and KUNDALINI YOGA, and How It Slows the Aging. It is published by KDP (Paperback and ebook). dave thanks, I'm kinda broke right now, I think I should try out some of those free sites, because when I split my budget on advertising in fiverr. they're not exactly useful in anyway. I used up 3 free days. they download but no one reviews. lol oh by the way I'm still a newbie in all of these. my book is a short read fantasy. I wonder which free site should I start first? inket?
Hi Mitch! I fully understand that and no worries. Inkitt won't help to add more reviews. Its a publishing company that will show your book to readers and if it does well, they'll offer you a deal. I have more on them and that in the Book Promotion Articles after the list of free ones. Instead, just taking the time and submitting your book to as many as you can during yoru free period is a good option.

Each one's schedule rules and timing is different, so that depends.

Hey Dave, I was waiting for the KDP-Rocket update because a team member told me that the international markets would be included. Now I saw that this has not happened in this upgrade. You mentioned it in the Video that it is a feature to come. Can you tell me when this will be included?
Hi Markus. Sorry if that was mis-communicated. Our objective was to first release Rocket 2.0 and ensure it's out fully, and then we'd be starting on the international markets one at a time starting with Germany. We're doing this, because we needed Rocket 2.0 in order to hold the international information (stronger and more stable).
Do not enroll in kdp select. It makes your book free to ppl and you don't really get the royalties from other books like they say you do
Question: Are you allowed by Amazon's terms to offer your book for free in addition to the 5 promotion days allowed every 90 days?
To make your book free, you'd need to get Amazon to allow you to be PermaFree - which is quite the process. But if your book is free, then what's the promotion? The promotion is supposed to be a lower price...but there isn't anything lower than free.
As the author-illustrator of my new children's book: A THOUSAND PURRING CATS, I feel overwhelmed with the marketing and promotional aspects of finding readers. Do you recommend using book review services such as NewGalley or IndieReader, instead of AMS? Thanks!
Hi susan.. I know exactly how that feels. Personally, I think that AMS is the best way to go. NetGalley and IndieReader are typically places where you are shopping your book to people that are looking for a deal or free. AMS is getting your book in front of people who are currently on amazon shopping for their next book. If there is one thing I'd rather do, it is to sell my book to the right buyers market ;)
